Permission granted, it was time to start. Gathering all the materials he thought he'd need, (and rather, allow), Marcus smiled to his wife, admiring her willingness to put up with him and his rather insane whims. Looking at the list of who he was getting for the first attempt at 'survivalist 101', the moon hunter was rather feeling good.

Moon, mist- what could go wrong? Nothing, that's what. Defensive and versatility skilled individuals. He had the basics for what he considered common hunter gear- standard things one would have on hand pre-mission- things that would get taken on a mission. Runics however were missing, but swiss army knives, pocket rations, small bandages, a tiny sewing kit, flint- he thought he was being generous as well.

But the hunters had been given hand written notices for a day, a time, and location. Edge of the jungle, noon, friday.

Marcus was waiting at the jungle's edge as promised at the date was now at hand, a small duffle bag slung over his shoulder, and a grim look of determination on his normally mellow, if not, expressionless face.

At least you will have Cass.
Dis-
Get some caveman style cuddling goi-
No.
You're right. Not until all clothing have become leaves should cuddling really start.

Marcus just sighed and waited.

"Don't look like you're leading everybody into doomsday, hun." Cass said as she patted her husband on the cheek, her own bag (as packed by her loving husband) also resting over (his) shoulder.

While Marcus was being generous with the supplies he'd allowed the kit he'd brought with him to have, Cass had brought her own kit that came with her on every mission - something she'd explain to the trainees once they arrived to see what actually came with the 'extra prepared'.

Aria had instilled the fear in her well.

Are you sharing a tent with your husband?

Maybe.

Bad idea.

Probably. Very Friday the Thirteenth.

What?

THEY WERE MAKING LOVE WHILE THAT BOY DROWNED, NIC.

Nick wasn't sure if she was pleased to get away from the incessant chores on base… or if she was irritated at this new hassle. Pack stuff. Get supplies. Enjoy nature. Enjoy the company of other people. She would have said no thanks if she had the option, the Moon trainee had experienced enough family camping trips as a child to last her a lifetime. Sure some of the skills had been good to know, but the forced interaction had been too much for her. And the dark had been awfully noisy…

Anticipating a long and very torturous trip ahead, Nick appeared rather slouchy and disgruntled as she met the pair of hunters at the edge of the jungle. Some rummaging for supplies beforehand had scored her a small, portable water jug, a small first aid kit with basic bandages and ointment, one pathetically tiny pocket knife, and some fiercely coveted matches. These were shoved into the small bag on her back, which also held spare clothes, a crisp, silvery blanket she had jacked from some cupboard, and a plastic mug from the kitchen. There were other things she could have brought, but why slow herself down? Might as well get out there and get back as fast as possible.

"H'lo," She said by way of greeting to the pair of full hunters, sounding about as unenthusiastic as one could get. That Marcus one, they had met before. Had he been the reason she had to suffer through this trip?

For once Cujo was blessedly quiet in her head. Waiting.

The best part about being raised in rural Quebec was Dorian had spent a few summers of his life going to bare bones Canada and getting his hands dirty in 'real camping' - which was basically a tent, some clothes and a lot of luck. Electricity was for chumps.

So hearing that he was being taken to some kind of camping excursion with Marcus (and others) had him pretty excited - and really suspicious - but hey, he wouldn't complain about a few days away from the most boring bedroom ever and just back to the basics.

Lugging his bag over his shoulder, he checked off his little list of things that he had brought, which consisted of;

    ♦ Justice.
♦ A few rations, and a bit of jerky.
♦ Cigarettes and his trusty lighter.
♦ A small boot-knife that he rummaged around for.
♦ Two or three regular runestones from his delightful swim a few days ago.
♦ One of his journals, a few pens.
♦ And his blanket, (suck it Chel, you'll have to use your own), so he could wrap them all up safely, so they wouldn't get damaged while they were travelling.

It seemed like a very good list when he checked it off, and it was more or less 'how much can I carry' than anything. Turning towards the two full hunters, he gave Marcus a soft nod of his head in hellos, before turning to the woman with the short hair, giving her a little wave of his hand and an even softer "Allo", before going to take his place next to Nick, which also gave him just enough time to administer a (rather soft) punch to her shoulder.

It was their way of saying hellos.

Finn very specifically remembered not signing up for this, so he had to wonder how he had gotten put on the list anyways. He was going to guess that it hadn't been optional, however, or it was very well possible that somebody else might have signed him up, if that was indeed how this thing worked.

Needless to say, he was very much not on board with the entire situation.

Finn had, of course, being one to have grown up in the countryside on a large farm in Southern Alberta, been on many campy trips in his lifetime. And his dad, a man who believed in really roughing it, had always taken them out in a large canvas tent, with rolled up foam mats to sleep on that didn't provide any comfort or padding at all, and with non perishable food items that came out of boxes and cans.

He had liked it back then, but only because he had been a kid and hadn't known any better. Now, however?

Finn had packed his things slowly. Like Dory, he didn't really have anything to carry his supplies in so he just used a blanket to carefully wrap it all up, tying it firmly. Inside were some very basic supplies, because Finn didn't have much that he thought would be worth taking on a trip such as this. A lighter, some boxes of matches, his phone (It had a decent amount of life left, considering he almost never turned it on), a few MRE packages that he had swiped from the cafeteria, a grand total of 3 cigarettes, a bar of soap, and a 3/4's full bottle of peroxide leftover from when he had gotten Fini's help in bleaching his hair. He would have packed his Adventure Time Finn hat for whatever warmth it might provide, but he wasn't too keen on it getting wrecked by nature in some way.

Finally, the bamboo mat he had acquired during a scavenging hunt through some junk on the beach. It would at least provide some comfort, he figured, as long as he was allowed to bring it along. He rolled it up and shoved it under the tie in the top of his makeshift bag, and moved on out.

In the meeting place, he arrived promptly at the designated time, cold gaze taking in the others that were to be going with him. He recognized two, one being the fellow Canadian (though from Quebec, if that even counted) Dory, and the other being the man who had brought up camping trips at the moon meeting.

Survivalist training. Awesome.

The two women he didn't know, but he offered them both a smile that did nothing to warm his eyes as he sauntered up to join them all, jostling Dory with a small shove of his elbow once he came to a stop beside him and awaited further instructions.

Cass had a way that made him soften without meaning to soften. A small look, just that hint of a smile under the surface as he ran his thumb over her hand briefly before letting go. "I need to be, if just to drive home the whole theme of this 'adventure'."

But, his expression fell back to grim as the trainees began to show up. With gear.

It was cute.

So do we crush all hopes and dreams right now or later?
Now.
Oh I love it when you get forceful. All in control and dominating and-
Dis, if you have nothing to contribute please shut up.
Let them keep the condoms. One thing that they'll need.
....... if they brought any I swear to god....

A heavy sigh towards his weapon, Marcus began what had to be a recited speech. "Welcome to basic survival training." It started polite. "To start us out, as you may know I'm Marcus Hasan, a moon hunter. And while this lovely woman next to me is my wife, she is also a full mist hunter in her own right and is co-leading this mission with me. Safe to say neither of us will tolerate disobedience or your petty arguments or complaints. Being a hunter isn't about being friends, or getting along, but it about working as a team, and working towards a common goal. The eradication of FEAR. However there will be times when we find ourselves trapped, cut off from support and left to our own devices.

It's times like those when we need to adapt and to work towards a more pressing matter- survival. FEAR dense areas mean enemies have the upper hand but what of low FEAR locations? What happens if we're cut off, to the point where our weapons themselves have nothing to run on and our runics are rendered nothing but hunks of metal? You all came with some basics set for camping- Well I'm very sorry but that's not the scenario you'll be given in all likelihood."

One by one he went to each of them, taking their bags and setting them into a pile. "The scenario is that you just got word of a horseman sighting in the temperate jungles of North America. You have no time to grab anything and upon arrival you're ambushed. The team has survived but the portal home is rendered unusable and now you have no choice but to wait for recon. In otherwords all this gear? You don't have any of it."

"You have your weapon, but for the sake of this exercise we'll keep their use to a minimum- only for when absolutely necessary. Everything in your coat pockets right now? That's all you'll have for the next three days."

Marcus finally smiled.

He looked like Dis for a very brief moment. Sadistic.

"Welcome to survivalist training."

"Well if you're going to be serious, I'm going to have to work on wiping that look off your face." she cooed back at him, but like her husband she made a point to wipe the overly affectionate look off of her own face by the time the trainees had gathered.

As Marcus made a point to gather up everything brought with them to toss onto the ground, Cass undid one of her belts - only one of them - and tossed it onto the pile as well. Just so they were all losing a little something here and there.

"It seems Marcus has given me opportunity to introduce myself - I am Cassandra - and while it sucks to lose all your self, I'm going to give you the first most important piece of advice that I learned as a trainee." She pushed back her coat to show the assembled trio the pack she had on her person underneath it and into the small of her back. After that, it was the knife she had secured to her person in it's holster.

"Keep anything essential to survival on your immediate person always - otherwise assume you will lose it in ambush or if someone grabs it. I highly suggest you assemble a kit that you take on every mission, even if it seems to be a safe one. Flint, steel wool, a knife, emergency rations, rope. Those are your bare minimums to bring with you. I suggest you add bug spray to that......" she looked to Marcus with a rather sad expression. He knew why she'd suggest bug spray.

"Also be prepared to ruin your coat and scarf on a moment's notice, they are fantastic makeshift defenses for the elements." She folded her arms before looking to Marcus.

"Fortunately, my husband has made due to supply you with the basics for this trip in his own preparations, so we won't be babysitting you too badly.." she tilted her head from side to side thoughtfully.

"Too badly." She lightly punched Marcus in the arm.

He huffed at his wife. "Yes, I did bring the goodie bag. But this goodie bag has it's own part in our little survival hypothetical. I can't just pass out tools like candy." He gave her a look at the mention of tools.

'Some people shouldn't be allowed hammers' was an ongoing issue.

"You'll find out about them soon enough. Until then, you're down to what you got in your pockets."

First things first, when Dory arrived and punched her arm, Nick replied in kind. Except harder. Maybe next time they met he wouldn't be suck a ******** wuss and treat her like a girl. Waiting on the last member of their group didn't take too long, and Nick was unenthusiastic at best when he arrived. She could tell a fake smile when she saw one.

But she didn't have a chance to muse on how much she was likely to hate this guy and his fake smile, because surprise surprise, they were gonna make this weekend even worse by taking away their stuff. Nick muttered curses under her breath as she handed over her bag, although she could understand why this exercise was being done, that whole bit about pockets and s**t would have been good to know ahead of time.

Instead of complaining to the higher ups, she turned to the one trainee she did know. "If you pull any ******** smokes out of your ******** pocket, I will destroy them. I will pull out ******** Cujo here if I have to."

A long wearied sigh echoed in her mind. (Child, I am not for destroying cigarettes...)

Nick took clean air very seriously.

She punched him back, and he was ribbed lightly by the third hunter of their "merry" little group of trainees. He only allowed the softest of grunts escape when he took the beating, showing them a very toothy grin. You should never show your weaknesses. b***h punched pretty hard though - he'd get her back somehow.

He was, admittedly, battling a mental image of what a Horseman was - he was secretly imagining something half horse, and half man - having yet to have seen them. To him, the word in french was cavalier, so he immediately thought of a stupid little dog or a man on a horse, so he was curious as to what they really looked like.

Clearing his throat, he came to again to hear that whatever was in his pockets, was all he was going to get (with the exception of a goodie bag, which kind of went over his head a little again, but he was trying), before checking over what was on his body.

"Hmm." He murmured, going to check his pockets and pulling the contents out lightly, grinning a little wickedly as he went to wiggle at cigarette at Nick. "Oh, Quel est ce, looks like it's a cigarette. I will 'ave to 'old on to it to enjoy later, oui?" He teased a bit, knowing she'd retaliate, but who the ******** cared. Tapping his leg lightly, he made sure the small blade was still there, before pocketing the cigarettes, his lighter (because, well, Justice was directly around it), and a few of the smaller rune stones, just in case.

Looking the other two trainees over, he gave a little look before leaning back a bit on one leg, raising an eyebrow. "Finn, this b***h is Nick, she's okay." He introduced Nick, giving her a soft thumb-point, before looking to Nick. "'S Finn. 'e's pretty okay too."

Good enough.

"Where the ******** are you NOT keeping those things?" Nick asked, her tone expressing a strong desire to just put her face in her palm and give up. "I suppose next you'll start pulling those out of your ******** a**," She muttered next. This was a line of thought she figured was best not to follow though, so she let the cigarette thing drop. For now.

However, it appeared the other jerkass still had some things to say. "******** you," she told Dory in a cordial, almost cheery manner, and then offered that fake-smile Finn guy a hand to shake. She would have to see about 'pretty okay'. Although chances are after a weekend with these two guys, nobody would be even close to 'pretty okay'.

Finn had watched survivor a few times in his life. He wasn't really big into reality t.v. but a few of his past girlfriends had been into it and he had, on occasion, been kind enough to humor them once in a while. One of the things he hated about it? That everyone watched it and then reacted as though what those castaways did on the show was even remotely difficult. They were given food, supplies to build a shelter, earned comforts and luxuries. They were surrounded by camera men. There were medics on hand. They were given fire if they could not obtain it themselves within the first three days.

Now, apparently, Finn was on his way to a true version of Survivor. No comforts or luxuries save for what he had stashed away in his pockets, which wasn't very much. His face was impassive as he handed over his bundle of supplies, glad that he had put his lighter and cigarettes in his pocket, as well as his phone, but not about the rest of it.

Oh wait, goody bags. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

The woman that Dory had been standing with was the first to break silence among the three trainees, and what she said had Finn's eyebrows raising, his lips quirking up again in an amused smirk, though that chilly gaze remained. She wasn't speaking to him, but still, a threat to cigarettes? She was going to be sorely disappointed if she thought that her little presage held any baring at all.

He watched the exchange between the two, eyes dropping to Nick's hand when she offered it, his own hands still in his pocket.

"How charming." The words didn't match the flat tone of voice, or the expression in his eyes, though he continued to smile. He lifted one hand out of his pocket to grip hers, squeezing perhaps a bit tighter then necessary, before letting it drop.

This was going to be so much fun. Could they seriously just get a move on, now?

They were not ready for this.

He was going to get them all killed.

Trainees.

Groaning to Cass and slapping his hand to forehead, Marcus shook his head, watching them squabble like children. If they wanted to ac like children-
"Oh look-" Reaching out, Marcus grabbed the cigarette and crushed it, tobacco scattering to the wind.

"Guess what crushes and gets ruined really easily in battle?" His voice was laced with sarcasm.

"Anything not protected. You have frivolous items in your pockets? That is a waste of space. That is a waste of what could be, something in place which could save your life. On missions don't pack what you don't need."

He eyed them all. "And guess what exercise your little pettiness and infighting has earned?" Another sadistic grin.

"How to use each other's body heat for warmth- aka- pick who's going to be the little, big, and middle spoon kids because thats how it's going to be until you can get along and take this seriously."

He began the march to the jungle clearly expecting them to follow.

"I swear to god Cass, I swear to god. Where do they even pick up these trainees anyway?"

Cass smiled, patting her husband on the arm. "Marcus. Remember that when I was a trainee, I broke my nose attempting to do push ups with Leon. In fact, I couldn't even run for more than 30 seconds. They're new. Give them time." Really, it was strange to think she now ran 20 miles every morning and push ups were something she'd upgraded herself beyond just to survive.

Her shoulders were enough evidence of that.

"For the record, for each one of you that doesn't have a knife in your pocket right now, that is one person that is already dead." She folded her arms and gave the trio a serious look. "Tell me the first reason that comes to mind why having a knife will save your a** even if it can't kill a monster."

"It can kill a rabbit."

Nick had been trying her hardest not to smirk at Dorian and his cigarette dilemma, the only thing keeping her from busting a gut was the knowledge that she had nothing at all in her pockets. It was still funny, but... she wasn't going to bring that sort of attention down on her head. The training portion of this trip was a welcome distraction.

Having to trust the two guys come bedtime would be hard enough without chancing more of the Moon hunter's ire, and to be honest, using a knife as a tool to get food was the second thought in her mind. She still wasn't sure about that Finn guy, and the last thing she wanted was to be made an example of so early in the trip. One firm handshake was evidence enough she had a challenge ahead of her.
