Once they were a good distance away from the two Finns, Ian stopped, bending over with his hands on his knees and breathing a little harder than he had been before. Overhead the sky was a dull grey, still misted over with rain and fog, and everything was damp and sticky - especially with the added bonus of being covered in mud.

Ian glanced up at Shiloh, straightening.

"So...good fight," he said lightly, smiling.

"Thanks," Shiloh said, scratching the back of his head with a grin. "You win some, you lose some."

He had an inkling of how Ian was feeling, about ready to collapse back into the mud himself, so he forewent the obvious questions of concern, as they both decidedly just needed some time to heal and regroup. He still was entirely sure what was going on, or why Ian had ushered them away from the pair. Except maybe because they were kissing, and could probably use a moment to themselves. Shiloh paled. Did Ian want to do that to him? What if they saw? He couldn't help it jumping to conclusions, because although normally oblivious, he couldn't deny that thoughts of that sort of thing had been on his brain often as of late.

He took a step back, as a precaution, and nearly slipped in the muck.

"Did I miss something back there?"

"Yes, in my case, I lost twice today," Ian said, with a sideways significant look at Shiloh. He narrowed his eyes slightly, eyes flickering across the step backwards, and wondered what was going through his head, why he looked slightly concerned. It wasn't as if he was going to jump him, though admittedly (and stupidly) seeing Fini and Finn smooching had sent his brain wandering to places it probably shouldn't have, giving him ideas of his own. Rain misted across his face, which looked similar to that of a war tribesman of some sort, streaks of brown beneath his eyes and over his forehead.

"Yes," said Ian, and stooped down, idly poking a finger into the mud. "You missed something. I was betting on you winning, and now..."

He heaved a melodramatic sigh, sliding a pointed look in Shiloh's direction. "Now I get to be Finn's slave for half a day," he said, slipping his hand fully into the pile of mucky sludge now. He straightened, bringing the handful of mud with him. It felt slimy and cold against his palm.

"Besides, during your little fight, you and Fini seemed to forget who you were aiming for," he added, gesturing to the mud on his own face. A slow smirk was spreading across his lips, Ian adopting an innocent look.

"I'm just returning the favor, Shyduck."

Then he promptly dived forward and smushed the mud against Shiloh's cheek.

SHILOH PLS

No, Ian most likely wasn’t going to jump him, but the misty rain and streaks of mud on his face lent him a more intimidating profile than usual, and Shiloh had just come off a riveting loss.

Oh, and the mud thing. There was also that.

Shiloh watched Ian carefully, not particularly considering the mud thing, even as Ian crouched and poked at the sloppy ground. After all, there was no reason for him to consider it, his mud ball had been aimed at Fini, and not the spectators. Though he might have encouraged her mud slinging, just a little bit.

“Well, that’s what you get for gambling,” Shiloh replied with a smirk, one that was quickly wiped off of his face when he noticed the ball of mud in Ian’s hand. Ian lunged forward, and Shiloh grabbed onto his wrist in protest, but it was too late for him to dodge.

“HEY! Ian, no-“

The mud ball splattered against his face, and the sudden force of Ian against him had him stumbling backward, unable to keep his balance on the slick surface. He landed a**-first in the mud, and sat there, trying to wipe the mud from his face with the sleeve of his jacket. His other arm drooped at his side, his hand in the mud.

“You didn’t owe me any favors,” Shiloh said quietly, not looking up. “Fini, threw it at you.”

Slowly, he got to his feet and finally glanced up at Ian, the grin on his face spelling certain doom.

“We should probably even the score, don’t you think?” he asked innocently, before pelting him with the mud ball in his hand.

"Well, excuuuuse me for believing in you," said Ian loftily, lifting his hands in a gesture of utter innocence. "I was under the impression that you were totally awesome and could kick Fini's butt, but nooo, then you had to go and get yourself all lost and stuff."

He was gently teasing, none of his tone mocking in the slightest, since he himself had lost to the very person standing in front of him. Ian watched with a sense of terrible satisfaction as Shiloh gaped at him, staggering backwards to land in the mud.

"Yes, well, you're an accomplice," Ian said primly, hands on his hips. "I think that's enough to..."

He trailed off, eyeing the grin suspiciously.

"Don't you even think - ACK - "

The mud ball hit him square in the chest, sending him stumbling backwards. Ian whipped around, staring at Shiloh, and then slowly shook his head from side to side, advancing several steps closer with slow, catlike movements, a look of evil intent on his face.

"Uh uh. You are so not getting away with that."

And with that, Ian dropped to his knees in the mud, grabbed a handful, and promptly tackled Shiloh, attempting to rub the next handful into his head of pale pink hair because that was what mature people did.

His mud ball hit its intended target, but then that target was stalking towards him, looking very predatory. Shiloh gulped, and attempted to scoot backward, but was once again too slow, Ian having snared him in his claws, claws that were currently threatening to turn his pink hair brown.

While the Mist hunter was preoccupied with his hair, he scooped his hand through the sludge beside him, shoving what he gathered down Ian’s shirt.

Ian was very pleased that he'd managed to get all that mud into Shiloh's hair, grabbing at his wrists to keep him from doing anything further. He put a knee on top of Shiloh's legs, pinning him in place, and gave a shout of victory.

A shout that turned very quickly into a squawk of mock outrage as cold, wet, slimy mud was suddenly shoved down his shirt. Ian gave a howl, shivering in the messy wet mist, and hastily scooped up another handful.

"Oh, that was low," he said, and pushed Shiloh back into the mud, kneeling over him and attempting to wipe his hands on Shiloh's neck. He slid them lower, fingers digging into his sides now, a devilish grin on his face.

"No way, Jose, you're not gonna win this one too."

Shiloh had been pretty muddy after his fight with Fini, but after Ian’s handiwork, he looked like he had practically bathed into the stuff. He’d managed to get the mud down Ian’s shirt in a last ditch effort of retaliation, but with the other hunter’s knee on his legs he was effectively immobilized, no matter how much he squirmed in the mire.

“Low, yes, and who has me pinned in the mud again?”

But his smugness was short lived as Ian pushed him back down in the mud again, his hands slick and wet on Shiloh’s neck. Shiloh grimaced, trying to wriggle away from him, but it was no use, and Ian’s grimy hands made their way down his sides.

“How do you even win a mud fight?” he laughed, trying to pry Ian’s hands away from him. Whatever the method was, he was sure it wasn’t going to end well for him.

Ian smirked.

"That would be me," he replied airily, because he was feeling overly confident and probably pretty stupid, but that was beside the point. He was winning this fight because Shiloh had already won against him in one fight, and it was only fair that he should win against him in this particular one.

"Easy," said Ian, and he smirked again. "You're the one that comes out on top."

His fingers stopped attempting to dig themselves into Shiloh's sides to tickle him, and instead Ian slowly slid one arm around him, slathering mud everywhere there wasn't mud already, his expression shifting slightly. They were in a rather secluded area, out of view of anyone passing by, but he wasn't going to push farther than was necessary because he wasn't about to scare him.

Still, Ian lifted a hand, pressing it against Shiloh's forehead, sliding his fingers back over Shiloh's now mud-streaked hair, a smile playing on his lips before he made a face.

"You're covered in mud now. Gross."

“I suppose that’s fair,” he grumbled good-naturedly, relieved when Ian ceased tickling him, but glancing at him curiously as Ian slid his arm beneath and around him. Shiloh sat up a little, not out of Ian’s hold but enough so that he wasn’t lying entirely in the muck.

The hunter’s other hand moved to his forehead, his fingers sliding through the mud-soaked mess that was Shiloh’s hair. Shiloh blew out a sigh, and smiled, he was absolutely covered in mud, and he most certainly was gross.

“Gee, and I wonder who might be responsible for me being gross,” Shiloh teased, find a dry spot of clothing to wipe his hands off on. Finding none, he grinned, reaching up to wipe them over Ian’s cheeks.

“Now you’re gross too.”

Ian supposed that they could have been doing more productive things, like training or searching for information, or what have you. But productivity was in the eye of the beholder, after all, and this was as good a thing to do as any.

Besides, at least he wasn't sitting around doing nothing.

"I'm pretty sure that would be you," Ian deadpanned, and then made another face, feeling a cold, gross wetness against his cheeks as Shiloh wiped his hands on him. "Since you're the one that threw the first shot, after all. And don't say it was Fini, because it twas totally the both of you."

He gave a low growl of amusement and exasperation. "Fine," he said. "We can be gross together."

It was probably stupid, but he did it anyway because they were alone and no one else was around and despite the grossness, Shiloh still looked pretty damn adorable, even all covered in mud, and Ian leaned forward, giving him the lightest of kisses.

Then he pulled back, realizing what he'd done, and flushed, pushing himself a little further away from him.

"Uh. Sorry. Got, um, slightly carried away."

“But Ian, it was Fini,” he whined anyway, letting go of Ian’s face and using his now sort of clean hands to try and clean his own face. It was a good thing that he had, because in the next moment, Ian had leaned forward and kissed him, the touch of his lips fleeting, and exhilarating, no matter how quick. Shiloh nearly fell back in the mud again.

His cheeks warmed beneath the mud caked on his face, and he couldn't help but give the area a sweeping glance, as though someone might have stumbled onto them. He felt guilty doing it, and he wasn’t sure entirely why he cared, it wasn’t as if he knew enough people on Deus to even fear people recognizing him, or spreading rumors. Besides, they were both trainees, and no one seemed to really care what trainees got up to. Still, as Ian pushed himself back, Shiloh didn’t stop him, watching him retreat. He had woken up from their last meeting in a bubble of warmth and comfort, but even as they’d parted, no questions had been answered. Not that Shiloh had been brave enough to ask them, but he wasn’t sure what all this meant, or where it was leading. Ian was used to going with the flow, and Shiloh was usually the same, but he was so unknowledgeable about this sort of thing, except what he knew from everyone else’s experiences besides his own. Not to mention that all of his friends back home had been straight, and Deus was the first time he’d even dreamed of the possibility of coming out. He wanted to go with the flow, but there was a lot of old debris and baggage blocking it up.

“It’s okay,” Shiloh breathed out, once he knew they were alone and that he’d settled his nerves. After all, Ian liked him, that’s why he wanted to kiss him. Shiloh liked him too, but he wasn’t sure if he was ready to be so bold yet, at least not in public, even if there wasn’t anyone around. He tried to smile, lifting his hands from the mud and shaking them off.

“We really are gross, I think I’m soaked right through to my underwear. Thanks a lot Ian,” he said, laughing a little. "At least my feet are still dry."

He had to admit that waking up with Shiloh next to him, enveloped in his arms, had been a very pleasant thing to wake up to. He'd lain there awake for several moments, just watching him sleep before Shiloh had stirred, and then the two of them had gotten up and sleepily parted without actually conversing much about what was going on.

Not that Ian even knew what was going on, really. He knew that he liked Shiloh, knew that he liked him that way, the way that meant he wanted to kiss him a great deal most of the time, but he also knew that he was used to a certain type of people - and Shiloh did not fit into that type. It wasn't a bad thing by any means, but it also meant that he had to be different than he normally would.

Like kissing in public. Ian had known who he was for a very long time, and had never hidden that.

Shiloh was not the same.

Ian lifted his hand again, gently brushing a few dirty strands of hair away from Shiloh's muddy face. "Sorry," he said again, and gave him a small smile, brushing a thumb against the corner of Shiloh's lips as though prodding at the hesitant smile. Ian pushed back away from him and grabbed his hand, hauling the both of them to their feet. He was soaked through and through with water and mud, and he gave Shiloh an amused sort of look, definitely not thinking about the latter part of his sentence.

"Come on, you," he said, and pushed him towards the dorm building. "Let's go get showered and changed and then we're gonna find ourselves some decent food."

He waggled his eyebrows teasingly. "Unless you want me to carry you."

Shiloh shook his head, laughing softly as Ian brushed away his messy hair. As his thumb trailed to the corner of Shiloh’s mouth, the smile grew slightly.

“Stop apologizing already, it’s already done.”

He knew Ian had meant no harm by it, and it wasn’t something he couldn’t live with. Definitely not, it was, as he had admitted to Ian, it was just going to take some getting used to.

Ian pulled them both to their feet, and Shiloh straightened up, eager to not be sitting in mud anymore. He tried to brush himself off, but it was futile, like the blue goop, the dirt wasn’t going to come off so easily and he stared at the mucky mess that was his outfit; he was quickly running out of clean clothes. But a shower and at least dry clothes sounded great, and food even better.

Being carried, however, not so much.

“Like you could carry me," he laughed, waving a hand dismissively at Ian and stepping ahead of him towards the dorms.

He felt a little embarrassed, but Shiloh was telling him it was fine, and he was smiling, so Ian let some of the tension in his shoulders relax. He squeezed Shiloh's hand before letting go and reached up to run his fingers through his own hair, which felt sticky and unkempt, slimy and gross. At least, he thought, he wasn't like Finn, who he could tell from one glance was most definitely not the type to care for stains on his clothes. Ian didn't mind getting all muddy, contrary to his earlier reaction, but he definitely wanted a shower and some clean clothes right about now.

He raised an eyebrow at Shiloh.

"Now hold on just a second," Ian said slyly, jogging to catch up to him and turning around so that he was facing him, an amused expression on his dirt streaked face. "You just insulted my manliness, and I'm not sure I can allow that, Shyduck."

And with that he threw his arms around Shiloh's waist and hauled him upwards over his shoulder, fireman style, holding tightly to his legs and carting him up the path towards the dormitory building.
