Cool air. Muddled skies. Gretchen couldn't see the moon, and the streetlight gleamed off her glasses and she sighed and leaned against the post and stared at the rooftops. She felt so confused. She felt happy to befriend Raven, but deeply sad that she couldn't befriend others. She adjusted her messenger bag. Maybe socializing wasn't so terrible. She hated these walks home though. Normally she took the bus to her apartment, but she missed the last.
It wasn't sooo far anyway. Not at this point. Just a block or two away. Certainly nothing would happen now. That would just be cruel.
Trash cans rattled in the closest alley, but wrapped up in wondering if Raven really liked her, she barely noticed.

Squelch squelch. Glub blub. Yub nub. These were not friendly sounds. These were bad sounds. Very bad sounds and they belonged to a very yucky looking creature. It was like a slimy cross between a hippo and a gorilla, and it was coming right for Gretchen.
“Blarghughrughhh!” Oh Gretchen. It would be your friend. And your end, you need only ask. And this…this thing would be more than happy to deliver.
Raven had left the café shortly after Gretchen did, still wearing a small grin from the whole encounter. She was most likely going to start texting the girl tonight, or maybe tomorrow, it all depended on how the walk home was, and how tired she was after she wrote at least a page of her stinking essay. Maybe half a page.

"Nonono!"
What was that? She clutched her messenger. She didn't want to fight it because fighting would hurt. It would tire her arms and bruise the...strange...creature. No. She couldn't land a blow. Instead she darted down the road. Her bag flouncing against her back. She panted. She couldn't run fast for long. If she could just make it to the apartment--
But then, a soda can in the road.
She secretly cursed the students who littered, but then revoked her curse because that would be mean and Gretchen didn't like to hurt people, even if their actions caused her to fly forward and land on her side. She clutched her scraped and bleeding knee. She cried out and studied the creature.
Maybe it wouldn't attack? Perhaps it wanted a hug?
A girl could only hope!

A hug would be nice! A hug that ended with a Gretchen who didn’t move anymore! The very best kinds of hugs. The youma moved closer, letting out another ghastly noise as it did so. Boy, did it ever carry a stench with it as well, an odor somewhere between rotting flesh and smelly cheese. Delicious. It was now only a few feet from Gretchen and gaining a little more every second. Perhaps the only good thing about this youma was how slow it seemed to be moving!
The sound hit Raven’s ears only a moment before the smell hit her nose and the girl almost threw up the four shots of espresso that were in her stomach. Almost. She was just around the corner from where this monster was and scoffed. It wouldn’t be too difficult to just turn around and go the other way. She didn’t really like youma, but she didn’t really care if it was attacking someone either. The Negaverse did what the Negaverse did, and who was she to judge? Though.
Raven paused looking around the corner at who the youma was attacking and finally just gave a groan. It was Gretchen. Poor, sweet, innocent Gretchen.
She couldn’t just sit there and do nothing, and she sure as hell couldn’t just turn and walk away. After a moment’s deliberation, she took hold of the pen in her pocket and powered up, walking out. “Hey, smelly a*****e. Come over here and pick on someone your own size.”
Well. Lesath was out and as big and bad as ever. Might as well make this a good show.

Oh no! Someone called Gretchen smelly! She frowned. Did that negate the wonderfulness of the compliment she received earlier that evening? Did smelly outweigh adorable? She supposed she could wear orchid perfume instead of violet and sweet pea, but then, she realized the smell the described emitted from the youma. It smelled of rotting cheese! Terrible. Horrible! A creature that stunk of cheese's decay seemed a monster, or maybe not an awful monster, but a misunderstood one.
Like her.
And then! And then! A beautiful golden-haired lady in green and black. Was this...one of those terrorists? She wondered who to fear more: The terrorist or the monster? Though, the terrorist seemed antagonist toward the monster? Gretchen hoped so. "Please don't hurt me!" She stood, panting. "Please! I try to be good!"
She dashed further down the road, slower now, her chest aching.

The youma turned back towards Gretchen and didn’t seem to like it’s prey running like that. So of course the only way to stop the running…was to stop the running. It opened its mouth and let out a torrent of slime and sludge, covering the back of Gretchen with it. There. Now she wouldn’t run and it could take care of the stronger one. The one that felt almost good. Almost.
Lesath made a completely disgusted face. “Why you little disgusting trollop. Do you really think I’m going to just stand by and let you do that?” She pointed a hand at the youma, calling out her attack and smirking as it began to writhe slightly in agony. The high pitched noises driving it just a little mad. Well. No bothering with any formalities. She didn’t want the Negaverse mad at her…but this youma was too gross to leave alive. She moved over to it, giving a few well placed kicks and punches, then one of her other attacks, giving a satisfied nod when it turned to dust.
Finally she turned to Gretchen. “Are you okay over there…?” Maybe she would be okay, but she sure wouldn’t smell okay.

When the youma faced her, Gretchen furrowed her brow and frowned. What was it...? And then. The rotten-cheese-smelling sludge spewed all over her. She felt pretty sure she died. Yep. She was stiff, heart-unbeating dead. How could she even think within that odor? The slime clung to her sweater and hair and dripped down her glasses. "Uhh--" She hugged herself. "UGH." She looked at Raven with sparkling eyes. "DID I DO SOMETHING BAD?"
What did she do to deserve this stench? Did she hurt the youma's feelings? Did she say something mean? Was this karma?
Maybe asking these things would bring her more badness. She wasn't sure.
She couldn't neglect the woman who saved her though. Under ordinary circumstances, she would have thanked her and shied away, but still feeling light and happy from that earlier compliment (though she wasn't sure it would apply if she smelled like this), she felt safe lingering just a bit.
"Thank you for saving me," she whispered. She wiped off her glasses and slipped them back on. Wringing her hair, she smiled. "What's your name?"
The woman saved her from death, and well, Gretchen wanted to know who to thank. Maybe they could hang out, and Gretchen could repay her somehow. The bookworm wanted her to know that saving her wasn't a waste.

Oh that poor girl. Poor, poor Gretchen. Lesath moved over to her, then picked up her overlay and began wiping as much of the sludge off of the girls face as she could, a worried expression on her face. “Did it hurt you? Are you all right?”
Ugh, her poor glasses, and her hair…ugh. Why couldn’t she have been the senshi of showers right now, she would have been so much more useful. “My name is Sailor Lesath, it’s nice to meet you…you aren’t hurt right? I don’t want to think that that thing hurt you.”
She paused, then hugged Gretchen, giving a tight squeeze. “You didn’t do anything wrong, he was just a stupid monster, and now he’s gone so you don’t have to worry about anything anymore, I’ll protect you. I promise.” And she would. She would protect Gretchen. Her friend. “Do you want me to walk you home? You know, just to make sure nothing else bad happens to you? You really shouldn’t be out alone at night, it can be dangerous.”
And now look at her. She was one of the dangers, and here she was preaching. What a stupid world this was. A stupid world indeed.

Gretchen couldn't tell if this was a great or terrible night. She made a friend! Wonderful! Then a giant monster covered her in slime. Terrible. Then Lesath cleaned her up and rescued her. Awesome! She leaned against Lesath as she hugged her and nodded fervently. She could have collapsed right there, but she figured Lesath wouldn't like that.
"Th-thank you~" She whimpered. It just felt so scary. She never saw a creature like that before. Granted, she heard of them, as many citizens did, but actually seeing one felt...horrific. "I feel safe now, but it was so scary, Lesath." She brought her arms around the Sailor and buried her face into her shoulder, trying not to cry. "I was so scared."
She nodded into Lesath's shoulder when she asked if she wanted to walk home and pulled away. "You are so nice for sticking with me even though I smell. Thank you, Lesath." She smiled, but her eyes screamed "DESPAIR PLEASE LIKE ME".

Lesath truly felt her heart crumple a little as Gretchen clung to her and she took the girl’s hand when she pulled away from the hug. “I’ll always walk with you. Stinky or not. Now…I’ve given my name, won’t you give me yours? I want to know who I’m going to be walking with all the time.” The senshi of moths gave a little wink, trying to show in her own smile that she did indeed like the girl. She liked her very much.
“I promise that I won’t let anything like that hurt you ever again. Not ever, ever again. I’ll be your guardian angel, if you’d like.”
Not that Dark Mirror Senshi should ever really guard anyone really. She sighed heavily, reaching one hand back, tugging half heartedly at her black butt bow. “…Do you think I’d look good in white? Like a real angel?” It was a dumb question, but it was one that just sprung into her head. And sure. Maybe Gretchen would be honest about it. Maybe honesty was what she needed and wanted to hear.
Then again, maybe she was afraid of the answer.

Lesath's hand felt soft and warm, and the wink made her heart flutter. She snickered. "Thank you for not judging me!" She leaned against Lesath as they walked, hoping she didn't stink as badly as she thought, though she felt certain she did. Oh, Lesath, you wouldn't wink and hold her hand just to mess with her right? She didn't want your hurt. She just wanted your adoration, or at least, kindness--to feel safe and happy and warm. Wouldn't you give that, Lesath? Erase her fear of shadows and the night or better yet, spirit her away from it all?
She hoped so.
"And thank you for protecting me forever," she whispered as if afraid the confession would scare off Lesath--seem to compassionate, yearning. It felt right, though. She offered, and Gretchen wanted, but what if wanting was too soon?
She nodded. "Lesath, you are my guardian angel!" She poked at her butt wings. "You even have wings!" She laughed and bowed her head into the Senshi's shoulder. "But yes, you'd look awesome in white, just as you would in any shade, in any outfit."
Her cheeks turned just a bit pink. She hoped this was okay. What if these compliments pushed her away? Gretchen feared pushing her away.

Lesath smiled at Gretchen, giving a little laugh. Well then. If this was how real senshi felt, it really wasn’t bad. Almost as good as a slight buzz. Almost. When the girl mentioned that she would look good in any color, Lesath just laughed again. “I really appreciate that. You’re a very sweet girl, and I really don’t think I could regret helping you for a moment.”
She reached down, stroking Gretchen’s hair gently. “Are you going to be okay? Like, seriously, that was a really close call, and I don’t want you to have any nightmares or anything…Just know I’ll be watching out for you, I promise. I’ll always watch out for you. No matter what happens. I will be your guardian angel…white wings or black. You’re safe with me.”
And she felt safe. This was the most comfortable Lesath had been with her own powering up in quite a long while…and she wasn’t quite sure how to handle the feeling.

Pshhh. Lesath flattered Gretchen far too much. She could cause Gretchen to overheat or break her face from blushing or explode her heart from racing. Surely she would spare the poor girl pain and suffering, or at least, acknowledge her terror. Gretchen laughed soft like a whisper or dandelion seeds drifting through the air. "Thank you." Her eyes gleamed with delight. She could lose herself in Lesath's smile and touch and laughter. She wanted to curl up and hide far away from the horrifying universe--the Senshi shielding her from horrors like garbage and bologna.
"Uhh." She smiled and coughed. Gretchen felt so gross. How could beautiful Lesath stand to touch her? Granted, Lesath's touch calmed her, particularly after that disgusting, atrocious creature--a poor thing that possibly couldn't control its stomach, toward which she felt quite sympathetic--vomited all over her and threatened her livelihood. "You're extremely pretty and nice and it makes me shyer than usual I guess. I don't know. I'm just--" She sighed. "--nervous."
Then gently, quietly:
"My name is Gretchen."
She hoped it would be alright.

Lesath shook her head. “There’s no reason to be nervous. I’m not going to hurt you or anything.” She wasn’t going to lie, she liked being told that she was pretty…that was very nice indeed. “You know, Gretchen.” Oh it was good to be able to use her name again.
“You’re very pretty too. Very pretty indeed…a shy sort of pretty, but someone that shouldn’t feel intimidated by other pretty people.” The senshi hesitated. The girl still did smell quite bad…but still.
She leaned over, kissing her nose, then laughed. “Come on, let’s get you home so you can clean yourself up. It’ll make you feel a lot better to get the last of the slime off of you, I think. That and the fact you’ll be safe at home. That’s always a good thing. I should be getting home too, to be honest.”
Because bed sounded like the best thing ever right now. Nights were gross.

Gretchen rarely received compliments like that, or at least, not from anyone other than her mother and father, who doted on her like they would a newborn kitten or a baby seal or some other feeble, defenseless creature. Her face felt on fire and she laughed and stammered: "Well--I--Pfft--Thank?" Words seemed very difficult for Gretchen, and for a moment, as Lesath stood against the glow of streetlamps and windows, Gretchen thought she was truly an angel.
Lesath kissed her nose, and Gretchen forgot about the stench of rotting cheese and an opera sprung within her mind, deep from her memories of being a little girl at the opera house, when she sat up so straight to catch a glimpse of Marguerite. Faust sung to her with such love and compassion and he even gave away his soul. Bye soul! Goodbye!
"I--uh." She blushed. "HMMNG. Grr. Uhh." Sputter sputter. Words. Words. She smiled. Brain, were you still there? "I want to see you again." She approached the door of her apartment building. "Maybe under easier circumstances but--" She laughed. "Soon. Thank you Lesath. For everything."
She slipped into the lobby and climbed the stairs, thinking of her angel all the way.
