It wasn't that he was scared of the water, it was that he was fully aware of the monsters lurking beneath the surface. It wasn't a metaphor for death; it was a very literal possibility.
But the establishment needed to be restored, and he was a dutiful son to his adopted home if nothing else.
So he dove beneath the surface.

His fears were realised as a creature made of eyes and teeth and fins rustled from where it rested, kicking up sand in an underwater cloud.
Gritting his teeth, Kostya swam towards a narrow crevasse.

The opening was just large enough fit him and his borrowed tank of air, and he exhaled into the mouthpiece, weary already.
He had never been scuba diving before, but the Sun swimmer had been kind enough to explain and show him the ropes, letting him test it in the pool.
The downside was that the Sun followed the Allan logic of thinking: touching and feeling and generally making his kind act uncomfortable.
The things he did for this place.

He turned his head, and felt the hairs raising up on the back of his neck. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, it seemed.
The tentacles wrapped around his ankle, curling lasciviously.
