The idea of going anywhere near the beach after recent events wasn't exactly Shiloh's first choice in activity, but it was apparently an important task, and seeing as runes were important to his division, it was a good opportunity to learn. Plus the weather was still balmy (see: sweltering) and and he hadn't yet got to swim, a fact that baffled him when they were on an island surrounded by water. The woman who'd explained the whole thing to them had mentioned there would be some risk but he couldn't imagine that their leaders would send them to their watery graves, so Shiloh reasoned it would be okay. He had called Maebe to join him, because she was arguably the toughest person he knew. If anyone could save him from getting eaten again, it was likely her. Shiloh had managed to borrow two air tanks from them both. He wished he had been able to find a pair of wetsuits, but as it were, he stood there in board shorts that constituted his bathing suit, the blue from his skin mostly faded save for a few spots on his skin and hair that still glowed. Nio Love you can roll the first thing if you want?? Swimming Down In the water surrounding the island there's numerous edlritch horrors of the deep waiting to attack your hunter. "Ha ha, you're like a smurf." Shiloh was nothing like a smurf, but he had a few faded glowy blue spots, and that was enough for teasing. So as Maebe strapped the air tank over her yellow polka dot bikini, she made sure to make fun of him for it. Then she trudged unhappily into the water, heading without incident for the closest cave entrance she could find. The faster, the better. If she didn't like Shiloh as much as she did, she would have told him that she'd meet him here, and never shown up. Her actual appearance was a miracle.

"Remind me why I asked you to come again?" he called after her, his grin evident in his voice. He was glad she had come. He followed her into the water, and was quickly reminded without her having to tell him, as their venture to the caves was entirely uneventful and the both arrived unscathed.

Maebe would have loved to remind him of why he invited her, if she could talk while she swam. Reasons such as her winning personality, her effortless looks, and her ability to draw a crowd using her charm alone came to mind. Of course, they were all preposterous lies, but in her mind they were definitely the only reasons why Shiloh would ever invite her anywhere.
The caves looked inviting. Inviting in the sense that they did not look inviting at all, and she couldn't believe she was willingly swimming towards them. The things she did for Shiloh .. and a working phone light ..

One at a time, she gathered up little runes she found buried in the always moving dirt and lodged into crevices of the rocky walls. She picked them out and stuffed them uncomfortably in her bra - where else was she supposed to put them? She didn't have a bag, she didn't think ahead. Thinking ahead was for nerds.
But eventually, five runes later, she realized that this was about as much as she was going to be able to take back before her bra collapsed and broke free. That would be bad for only one reason - she would lose the runes.
Unacceptable.

Shiloh followed her down into the caves, and into the little nook where she'd managed to find some stones. He couldn't believe their luck, he knew that he'd brought her for a reason, her not so necessary comments aside. She seemed like the type of girl who knew how to get things done, and he wasn't disappointed.

He was tempted to ask her to hold onto the stones he gathered, but he was fairly certain that would also tempt her to punch him. Plus their being underwater meant he would have to resort to crude sign language, and he wasn't sure there was a polite way to say, 'Can you hold my stones in your bra, too?' with his hands.

Five runes. That was going to be her measly haul. She contemplated this sourly as she started to leave the caves, only to be surrounded by a small circle of very shiny, very frightening looking women fish.
The fact that mermaids had just gone from fiction to fact made her want to go home and burn her copy of The Little Mermaid once and for all.

Maebe started to flail desperately for Shiloh's attention. There were so many of them, and it was easy for her little form to be hidden by all those mermaids, but she tried her best. This only made the mermaids more frantic, as they nipped and tugged at her, toying with their food. HP: 35/40

Shiloh swam after where he had seen Maebe last, and tumbled headfirst into the fight between her and the mermaids. The mermaids were furious, clawing at them both, and there were far too many of them for Shiloh and Maebe to hope to take down by themselves.
Shiloh bumped Maebe, nudging her hard and pointing in the direction of an opening.

If they could escape, they needed to do it now, or the mermaids would close in on them. Assuming Maebe was following him, Shiloh kicked off and darted through the space, finding himself in yet another cavern. Thankfully, this one wasn't occupied by mermaids, but as he looked around, there was no Maebe either. He waited, hoping that she'd poke her face through the cave opening any minute.

Maebe felt him suddenly bump into her, but she assumed it to be a mermaid and screamed through her air-tube, flailing away. He swam for the exit that he'd pointed at, and she saw it - just as a mermaid blocked her from it.
He continued off, and she secretly hoped he'd feel responsible for her death if she didn't make it. Because he was!! He so was!!!

The mermaids were toying with her. They plucked at her hair and her feet, they scratched at her suit and her skin, and every time she thought she saw an opening for the exit, they blocked it and pushed her back in the middle.
She was mermaid chow for sure.

And since when did mermaids eat people anyway? Okay, so fine, they were mean and monstrous. She could learn to accept that. But they obviously looked hungry, and - now that she thought about it, there totally were mermaids in some stories who ate people.
Maebe started fighting back. Like hell was she about to be eaten by Ariel and her friends.
