 He woke. At first he laid quietly, eyes partly open and studying the scenery. Something felt wrong, different. The buck pondered this for a time… ah of course, Rebellion was missing. The comforting presence of the Sand Dog had disappeared from his side. He relaxed, eyes floating shut once more. The pup would return eventually. Then the wind changed and his nostrils flared, taking in the metallic scent of blood. The Killing Moon was on his hooves in a second and found the corpse among the spindly trees that made of the thicket. For a second he wondered how he could have ever missed it, but then his dog was there, barking and yipping for him to follow. He followed, after throwing one glance back at the mangled remains of the doe. He would do his best to discover the truth, he promised. He bit down... ... and quickly released his grip with a pained shout. Thorns. They had pierced his gums and tiny rivulets of blood now ran down his cheek. He scrambled at the ground, hoping tearing the vines up from the roots would be the way to go. But the effort almost exhausted him and he stood chest heaving... until he noticed an odd glint. A piece of blood-soaked shell. A once treasured item, perhaps? The buck stared at it grimly and then got back to work. Finally! With a last heave of effort, Killing Moon broke through he vines. Rebellion followed him through the hole, stopping only to give the tangling plants a piece of him mind with a lift of his leg. The buck chuckled and carefully slid down the sloping bank and into murky water. Then there came a tickle at his ankles, following by the flash of shining teeth. A pike! The fish took a solid blow and it floundered about in the shallows. Killing Moon moved in for the final blow, but he knew it would take another chunk about of him before its time was done. The pike was dead. Killing Moon stood bleeding, catching his breath before he turned to face his next challenge. That slope did not look fun. But he gave a determined snort and got to work. He found a tough section and did not progress an inch, but beneath his hooves turned up another shell, this one bright blue and with only one small drop of blood. Killing Moon allowed himself a small smile. He was nearly there. Just a little bit further and he would be able to push himself up the solid group. He didn’t notice he’d stepped all over the rat nest until they were swarming him. But rather than give way, he attacked back, driving them away. The buck pushed on, using a snagged branch as leverage. Then there, tangled amongst the twigs, was a bloody feather. It shone glossy and colourful, like you would see on a duck or other waterbird. Killing Moon continued on, finally reaching the top. There he stood, catching his breath. It was with a grateful heart that he moved towards the welcoming trees. Here at least the going would be easier. The thunderous arrival of the boar sent those happy feelings plummeting and Killing Moon turned to face it. A tusk gored his side and all he came back with was a small chunk of the boar’s ear. This did nothing but seem to enrage the best further.
