To be honest, when Ryan had found out he was to fight Ami in the first round, he didn't know how to react. He personally didn't have a problem with her, but from their last encounter, she clearly had a problem with him and for reasons he didn't even know why. Much to his disappointment. The last time he remembered seeing her, they parted on good terms, he might have even have thought of them as friends. But apparently that wasn't the case. Not anymore.
Locke was oddly quiet in his mind. In fact, whenever the subject was brought up, the carbuncle quickly changed the topic, usually by distracting him with something annoying until Ryan let it go. Oh well. It was out of his hands and if Ami truly disliked him, she was welcome to deal as many hits as she wanted if it helped. Either way, he was simply here to participate in the tournament and get some competitive practice in.
The gauntlets were summoned in a flash of red. Though unlike their previous design, Locke had become a little sharper in design and even summoned a pauldron on his one arm. Almost as though he was trying to protect it more. Maybe because he had managed to break it before? It was a welcome change, however, and allowed Ryan to deal more damage in ways he hadn't been able to before. The only issue now was Ami had the advantage where reach was concerned. He would have to get in close if he wanted to stand a chance. After all, there was nothing he could do from a distance. He was a close combat fighter.
Taking in a breath, Ryan raised his fists and took on a stance. He usually didn't like acting first, but when someone had a longer ranged weapon, he couldn't risk standing around either. So before he could change his mind, the moon hunter dove in, skidding across the ground before lifting his leg off the ground and throwing a kick at Ami's midriff.

Ami summoned Junpei in the same moment that Ryan brought out his shining red gauntlets. She was glad she hadn't been sent to the mud pit- that would've been horrendous. She'd worn nice clothing for this event (but then, she always wore nice clothing. She was never NOT in nice clothing) and didn't want to see it ruined in the first battle.
A slim smile trimmed her face as she realized this would be a chance to pummel Ryan in a safe manner. She wasn't as angry at him as she used to be, but she wasn't going to say that kicking his butt wouldn't be satisfactory.
"Ah ah ah," she tutted as Ryan ran in. He was trying to get a close combat advantage, but Ami saw through it. As he kicked her, she pivoted on her back foot, using the momentum to slam her glaive into his backside, hopefully getting him further away from her. She'd had the same thought as Ryan- if she was going to win, she needed distance.

Ryan let out a hiss of pain as she smacked her glaive into him. In spite of the size of her weapon, she was quick on her feet and even quicker to swing it around with bruising force---as he had just found out the hard way. She even succeeded to push him back as she had planned. However, not before he managed to catch her with his claws.
"Saw through that, huh?" He asked, a small smile on his face as he backed up just out of range of her glaive.
On the bright side, the hate he had seen in her eyes the last time they met was gone. She even looked as though she was enjoying herself.

"You're remarkably transparent," she commented, moving out of his range after feeling the scratch of his claws on her FEAR shield.
Ami held up a single finger, signaling an impromptu "time out." "One moment." She stuck her glaive in the ground for a moment, adjusting a bobby pin that had gotten caught in her braids. "Carry on."

Ryan's lip twitched. "You wound me." Though it was true what she said and there was no point in denying it.
The moon hunter was about to advance once again. But before he could, Ami raised a finger, gesturing a time out, causing Ryan to pause. From what he could tell something had come loose or got tangled in her hair. Which, if that was the case, he would obediently take the break and give her the time to re-adjust her bobby pin. However, during that break, he decided to plan out his next attack.
The moment time was in, Ryan lunged forward. Though rather than throw a punch or another kick, Ryan ducked down, seemingly rolling towards the ground, though before he actually made contact with it, he rotated his body and spun, bringing his leg up and around in a kick. A kick which he then began to drop down on her.

Ryan was faster than he looked. Ami, still being slightly unfocused from adjusting her hair, didn't even see him swoop in, and knock her off her feet. He'd found her own weakness- her balance had always been terrible.
To wield a glaive required a certain amount of balance, which Ami had mastered, but at her short stance it was never going to be as solid as it should have.
"Touche," she commented, standing up. "You're not as bad as you look."

Ryan remained mindful of the glaive as he dropped down to the ground, only to spin back up to swing his elbow at her.
"Thanks." He replied, putting some distance between the two of them once again.

Ami gave him some suspicious eyes. She'd forgotten what it was like to face adept foes- not inept little shadows attacking her house (again).
As he came in with his elbow, Ami pressed the switch on her glave and snapped it in half. Wielding the blade end, she rushed forward, following the slice with the club end second. "We all have our surprises I suppose."

Ryan was pleased. He himself hadn't fought anyone recently aside from the usual creatures they got to deal with. So getting this experience to have a one on one with another hunter was a nice change in pace. Even better that it was made into a competition. It made things more fun and got your blood pumping.
Though... he didn't expect her weapon to separate. In fact, he didn't even know it could. He imagined it was just your ordinary glaive. Apparently he was wrong.
A grin formed on his face, as she brought the two ends of the weapon at him. It was a strong blow to his Fear shield, even with his arms brought up in a cross to block against it. For someone as short as Ami, she sure packed a lot of power in her swings. However, now that she was in closer range, Ryan broke his defensive stance to throw a few punches at the life hunter.

Ryan broke her stance again and again. His height wasn't anything extraordinary, but it was still too tall for Ami to properly combat.
"Any chance you could shrink a few inches?" Even the playing field, right?

In between the attacks, Ryan searched for openings, striking when he could by throwing punches, jabs, and the occasional kick. Though when Ami made a request, he paused briefly to let out a small laugh.
"Even if I could, I'm not sure I'd want to." He wasn't short, but he certainly wasn't the tallest either, and it pretty bad when your friends towered over you.

Ami found herself on the floor, sprawled out flat. "Ah mercy, mercy. My shield's gone."
She didn't looked too upset about it. "Truth be told, I'm glad. I can go back to work and I don't have to go in that godawful mud pit." She stood up, brushing herself off and held out a dainty hand in Ryan's direction. "Good ah- well fought or whatever."

Ryan stopped in his advance immediately. Only now catching his breath.
"Mud pit?" He hadn't gone to look at the other sparring grounds, but he should have known someone would have created a mud pit. Though before he could start trying to guess the one responsible, Ami held out her hand towards him. "Thanks. I enjoyed fighting with you." He answered, de-summoning his weapons so he could grip her hand in a firm shake.
