The Ancient Egyptian year was organized by lunar cycles, with regular months and festival days. The end of the year was sometime roughly in July (usually. July and August are solar constructs), with the new year beginning in August, around the time of the beginning of the annual flood. Like most ancient peoples, the end of the year was a time for reflection on the relationship between the new and the old—the living and the dead. The beginning of the year was marked with the Wag Feast, which honored the god Osiris. Celebrations included laying garlands on statues and stela, making offerings of food and drink to loved ones, and honoring ancestors. Every few years, an extra month called Djehutet would take place. The primary feast of this new month was Djehuty, which honored the moon god for whom it was named. Greek historians such as Herodotus gave us Djehuty’s better-known name: Thoth. Both feasts, as well as the break off from work granted by the flooding of fields, gave much of Egypt an excuse to party and get drunk.

These two brothers, however, maybe not so much. They’ve arrived—separately—to honor their late father with offerings of food, drink, and funerary garlands. Your task—to be shared with a partner—is to tell me who these two brothers are. What are they like? What’s their relationship to each other? Do they get along? What’s their relationship with their father, and why did they come separately? You can tell it as a story, you can tell it in an explanatory paragraph. It’s up to you.

Response:

The brothers had had a...tense relationship, one could say, for years. The only problem was that only one of the brothers knew about it. It seemed that since they were very young Atar had been the favored son, and naturally Atar was oblivious to this. Everything for him was just dandy. He got to do almost anything and everything he wanted, his opinion was valued by their father, he was loved by his father and he loved him back. They spent lots of time together and he had many fond memories of his sire.

Manu, on the other hand, saw all of this very clearly and painfully. He was living in the shadow of his brother almost all his life. He was no better or worse at most things than Atar; for the most part they were evenly skilled and talented. Something just clicked between their father and the darker brother, something that didn't click with Manu. Sure, Atar would try to spend some quality time with Manu, but more often than not something more interesting(he supposed) would come up and he'd be ignored and apologized to later, only to find out Atar and their father had gone out together. There were attempts made at family outings, but again, he felt as if he were a third wheel. Even when Manu managed to do something impressive and worthy of praise it was a "Good job, I'm proud of you" instead of the "That's great! You've done wonderfully! You are my greatest creation, I'm so proud of you" that Atar would receive for even the smallest of accomplishments.

That wasn't to say that it was all bad times, there were a few memories of their father that Manu didn't hate and actually felt equal to his brother in the eye of their father. It was those memories that directed him to the temple. Despite always favoring his brother, their father had been a good star and done good things. He had been a hard worker and he had taken care of the two of them after their mother had passed when they were very young. It was only natural he felt sorrow at the loss of family.

It had been a while, though, since the brothers had seen each other. Once they'd reached adulthood Manu had gone his separate way, leaving his father and brother to their happy relationship. Every time he thought of Atar, Manu could feel nothing but resentment and jealousy at the love and attention he felt was stolen from him...but he never said or did anything for fear of embarrassing or bringing shame to their father and small family. That would never earn him favor. Now, though, the time was lost. Each brother came to the temple separately with their funeral offerings to honor their recently passed father, and as usual Atar seemed oblivious to the resentment in his brother's eyes. Atar's lack of awareness was a main source of agitation to Manu and what made him the most angry towards him, and it was only a matter of time before he lashed out....

Manu stared across the temple. Of course is brother would arrive at the same time he did. It was just his luck...or lack thereof. He sighed quietly as he tried to figure out the best way to avoid being seen. If there was one thing he absolutely did not want to do during this already confusing time, it was talk to his brother. He decided he would stick to the shadows and do his best to sneak up and place his offerings, then quickly depart.

He bent his head to pick up the things he'd brought, but when he lifted it, he saw Atar heading straight for him. He stomped his hoof, angry. 'It's not enough that I'm here? Not enough that I came to pay my respects to a father who never respected me? I'm not even sure if I'm happy he's gone so he can never make me feel inferior again, or if I'm sad he's gone and now I never have the chance for him to realize what he'd done all these years and apologize. Now I have to stand here and talk to him. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!' Manu's thoughts filled his head, loud and incessant, yelling at the Gods. 'I just wanted this one thing!'

Atar had come to the temple to bring gifts in honor of his dearly departed father, the star who raised him and his brother alone and never took a new wife. Everything their father had done had been for them. The algiedi could look back into his past and remember every single happy memory, and there were lots, and hardly recalled any bad or unpleasantness in his foalhood. He had truly had a blessed life, and he thank his father and the gods for it. The passing was only recently and Atar was still in mourning, feeling a deep sadness and the pain of loss deep within his soul it seemed. He'd lost more than a father, he'd lost his best friend.

He looked up from the gifts he'd brought and spied his brother, Manu, across the temple bringing his own gifts. Surely Manu would be someone that would understand and share his pain; it was his father, too. It was difficult and lonely grieving alone, and now that his old support was gone, he needed another. He was hoping his brother could be that support and they could reconnect after not speaking to each other for some unknown reason for years. Maybe his father's final gift to them would be the recovery of family? Atar headed in the direction of Manu with hope in his heart, completely unaware of the other's feelings towards him and their father. "Greetings brother, it's good to see you again."
