Even Old Wounds was not with them all the time, but she was there enough for them to take care of her. This was one of those days where Rush of Wind had drawn Omen away from their resting place, leaving Old Wounds to rest in the comfortable area they had found with Gale, just to spend some time together and to talk. He had no destination in mind, he was just wandering.

He did not feel the urge to hunt that often drove him to run, he still felt it sometimes, but with the impending birth of his and Omen's children, and Old Wound's, he hunted more to provide food and nutrients than to satisfy his desire to fulfill his naming dream. He knew the feeling would return, it always did, but for now he was content to live without it, to live chasing the next smile on Omen or Old Wound's face that he felt rather than saw rather than chasing that perfect arc of blood flying across his vision.

It had been his suggestion. He had first uttered the words, watching keenly for Howl’s reaction and to his surprise he had received no opposition. Not long after Old Wounds had arrived. She had fit naturally into their lives and now carried their future in her belly. Omen was, to be quite frank, terrified. But he hid it well, holding his emotions in check beneath a gentlemanly veneer.

Omen was only a step behind his mate and was ready for more that this casual gait through the forest. The buck took off at a dead run, knowing the Acha would follow. In the beginning, when their travels had just begun, Omen had barely been able to keep up. He had been paunchy and definitely unfit. Too much idling, he would grumble.

But now it was different and he could feel the freedom in his lean body and the wind in his hair. Like this, he wasn’t afraid. He would be a good father and he would have something of Howl’s to love even when the Acha was far away, splattered in blood.

When Omen took off running, it took less than a heartbeat for Howl to follow. After hunting, running was the most natural thing in the Swamp for him to be doing. He had been born to run over dunes and when he came to the Swamp, he learned to run amongst the tangled undergrowth using what little sight he had and his ability to balance and right himself even if he did get caught. Now, running with Omen, he knew he only had to mirror the other buck, the match hoofsteps to avoid the pitfalls of the nearly blind.

Sometimes, running felt like running away, but at this moment, it was anything but. He ran knowing that Omen could match his speed, content in this very moment when his blood sang with more than the need to hunt.

Ahhhh, I'm just imagining Tempting Fate and Superstition finding Omen with the new babbins. "I'm going to tell mom!" and "Woah, you're fit now." xD

(Sorry this took forever!)

She heard them before she saw them; her keen ears picking up on their hoofsteps even as they were muffled by the soft ground beneath their hooves. She stood up, knowing suddenly that approaching was a soon to be parent by that low familiar feeling in her belly. She stood, poised on soft paws, until they were racing past her.

She dropped down then and loped easily by their side. She was capable of even greater speeds, a strange, magical gift from the MotherFather when she had been blessed, but she simply ran by their side, feeling the exhilarating freedom of the ground flying beneath her paws.

With Howl with him, Omen felt as though there was nothing he couldn’t do. He could almost imagine running straight up into the sky, to race across the clouds and let thunder pound out to the rhythm of his hooves.

The arrival of the cheetah knocked him from his thoughts and his gait faltered slightly. He took turns watching the path and watching the swift beast at his side.

But there was no sense of malice coming off the big cat, so he simply kept running, enjoying the companionship until finally he could run no further.

He slowed, chest heaving with each breath and his hair a tangled mess.

Omen might have started to hunt the cheetah at another time. It was his nature to hunt, especially those that had the speed to run. But this was not the time, so he too just enjoyed the companionship of the cat running at their side until Omen slowed to a stop.

His breath was shorter than usually, but his life spent running meant that he was still not as winded as Omen. Huffing softly, he pressed his nose briefly to Omen's hair before regarding the cheetah curiously. It had stopped right as they had and was now looking at them with its strange, glowing eyes. They seemed to have an intelligence beyond even that of the cleverest familiars.

Suddenly, a voice rang out in his mind, "Well met and congratulations."

Howl looked over at Omen, alarmed. Was he hearing things?

Omen returned the touch, pressing his nose gently into Howl’s cheek. He wasn't afraid of the cheetah and how close it was. Ever since his mate had saved him from the wolf, he feared no creature while with his beloved Acha.

Besides, there was something different about this one…

Ah. There it was.

Omen nodded politely and smiled. "A legendary," he explained softly at Howl before adding for the cheetah’s sake, "thank you."

Omen smiled into the touch, his gold eyes crinkling with the expression. He nodded at Omen's explanation, before dipping his head into a short bow. Having heard of legendaries, but never encountering one before; the voice in his head was unexpected. He responded politely anyways, his voice less stilted than it was after he went away for his solitary hunting trips, "Thank you."

He paused, before tilting his head, wondering if they were meant to say anything, if there was some custom that they were meant to follow. He knew that legendaries were capable of blessing clutches, but he wasn't sure if he should simply ask and even if he did know what to do, he wouldn't know what to ask for. He, like any parent he supposed, wanted his children to have fulfilling lives, but what that meant, he did not know.

The cheetah smiled at them, her sharp teeth flashing, but the expression was harmless when set in her soft face with her soft eyes. There was something patient there as if she did not want to push them to speak if they were not ready.

When the silence had lengthened almost uncomfortably, Omen cleared his throat. It rather fortuitous the Legendary had turned up and he didn't intend on letting it get away.

"So..." he bsaid in his most polite voice, “since you’re here... Howl is going to be a father soon. Would it be remiss of me to inquire about a blessing?”

Starburst smiled wider then, her front paws kneading the soft ground beneath them in what could only be described as a cheerful manner. She had been right about the break the silence because patient she may be, but silence was a little unsettling. "No, not at all."

"Though I do ask that those I bless answer a question before I bless them," she said, voice bright. "Either of you can answer the question, or both if you'd like. Would that be okay with you?"

Omen shared a glance with Howl, seeking silent permission. It might have been Howl’s bloodline that Old Wound’s was carrying, but they were his children too and he would do his best to make sure they had every chance at a wonderful life.

"Certainly. I will answer any question to the best of my ability."

Amorpheous
also, forget to mention that yes, the twins finding out about Omen's new kids would be great xD

Starburst nodded her head congenially, considering what her question might be. She regarded both the bucks evenly with her bright eyes, and though her expression was still kind and gentle, there was a touch of serious contemplation to her face. Finally, after a pause, though not as long as the last, she asked, "Why is it that you have chosen to have children and what do you hope to offer them?"

Once again Omen glanced at Howl as he gathered his thoughts. This was his to answer. He was the one who had begun this part of their journey.

"Because I am selfish," he smiled, "and I want even more of Rush of Wind. Every morning I want to wake up and have part of him there with me, even when he himself is not. I was never a wonderful father to my own children, but this time I will do better. They will receive every part of my heart."

Amorpheous
Yep!

Oh, wanna bless Peep's next clutch? xD

Howl smiled at Omen, letting him answer first. He watched, as a much as he could when he could never quite make out the features of any kin's face, the way the words shaped the expression on Omen's face. When Omen finished, Howl felt a rush of affection for the other buck and let out a soft sigh before answering.

"I too am selfish. I chase impossible things because I cannot accept that they are impossible, and in this way, I may be able to offer Omen a part of a me to be with him always when my selfishness, my nature, takes me elsewhere, when my heart," and there he pauses because while Omen's affections are absolute, his, while wholehearted, are also infinite with others that could lay equal claim to his heart, "draws me away, for the hunt, for loves beyond even my control."

"In exchange for my selfishness, I hope that I may offer my children freedom, an understanding of reason and motivation so that they can run simply for the sake of running, or to rest just to rest." It was rare the Howl spoke so self-aware of the limitations of his obsession, of the way he seemed to live so freely yet so confined. Even so, even with this acknowledgement of the way his life was limited, he could not give up his way of living, so engrained it was like sand that has wound its way under his skin.

Ruriska
I think maybe they might have talked about their feelings?

Yes. Peep is so cute!
Asking here since it's convenient, would you be interesting in entering the Black Swan poetry contest with me?

(Going to get in a quick response with Starburst and the blessing)

Starburst listened to both bucks without interruption. She blinked slowly, giving a single nod in acceptance of their answers. She pondered what she could bless their children for. Both bucks, and she assumed the mother as well, seemed aware of their limitations and also willing to try to offer their children more than what they were able to achieve on their own. Passing observation might say that Rush of Wind's situation was similar to her own, but the way he phrased it, it was clear that it was not so simple and it was not her place to impose her personal conception of love on others. All chose to do so differently.

She did not bless clutches lightly though her cheerful demeanor might suggest otherwise at times. While she thought harder about some than others, she meant all of them with equal good will and a desire to see the best outcome for the parents' children. So when she spoke, there was a gravity to her voice, "Very well. May your children take after their parent's in their ability to understand themselves and let learn from what their parents have to offer, to gain great wisdom and to enjoy love, life, and everything that entails."
