She could at least say she was pretty good, but many of the other foals probably would’ve begged to differ. If there was one good academic thing she could do, it was to take useful notes.

The ending bell still buzzed in her ears as she hummed and leisurely packed her things. She bent down to pick up her bag and slide her notebooks in before a sudden yell jolted her and her things scattered to the floor. “Ah. Um.” Jolly frantically switched between her possessions and the other phony. “Can I help you with something?”

“Yeah! Can I borrow your notes for tomorrow’s quiz?”

“Wait! I want to borrow them too.”

“Before you leave can I have your notebook and copy down a few things?”

Her ears flattened against her head as she took a nervous step back. “Uuum. Well. I guess. I mean…” To be honest, she wanted to head straight home and study her notes herself, but to refuse all of these requests was a bit…

Ever since his incident at school not too long ago, Acid Beat had become increasingly aware of the value of working hard and not skimping on the edges. He was smart enough, he thought, too smart to rely on cheap fixes. Although... that never stopped him from asking somephony to be a study buddy. Usually, he hung out with Truths; he and the fiery unicorn got along surprisingly well. The bell rang, cutting through his thoughts, and he stood, flinging a cyurl back out of his eyes.

As he turned he caught sight of another phony, a pale, almost desaturated girl. She looked displeased, and Acid, being the nosy colt he was, wandered over. His own green ears flattened to match hers. Although he had only heard the end of the conversation, it was clear. They were asking for way more than just a little help.

"Hey, guys, don't you think you're using her a Little too much...? I know I'm kind of butting it, but.. shouldn't you have made your own notes?" He smiled at the pale filly. "She did all this work and you're just going to, what... take it? Rude."

It was hard to refuse, especially when so many of her classmates appeared to seek her assistance. She wanted to help them all, but wasn’t this asking for too much and so suddenly? Her tail flicked nervously as she opened her mouth to say something, but then promptly closed it when Jolly realized she couldn’t form the appropriate response. Instead she awkwardly stood there as they impatiently waited for an answer. “Well? Can we?”

Her ears perked up when someone chose to step in, saying the kind of words she wished she had the courage to say. Jolly beamed at him as the others lowered their heads.

“Yeah, I guess…”

“I’ll just ask the teacher some questions then. I wonder where she went?”

“In her office, right?”

Their steps echoed in the distance as Jolly picked up the rest of her things and walked over to Acid to briefly lower her head at him. “Thanks for the help back there! You really saved me. I’m Jolly Rancher. You?” Her face lit up. “Oh, and if you need help with studying, I’d be more than willing to give it. It’s the least I can do.”

He watched as the crowd dispersed quickly. Well, he hadn't thought it would be that easy. It was just as well, because he had no idea what he would've done if they had been persistent. One day his impulsiveness would get him in trouble... again. He flicked his gaze towards the grey little filly. His father had said to always try and be gentlemanly towards a lady... But the filly's bright smile was making Acid a little nervous and he scraped one hoof along the ground.

"I-it's no problem, really! I, um, recently learned the hard way that everyphony should do their own work. I'm Acid Beat." He chuckled depreciatively. Acid would not be forgetting the cheating bit any day soon. His green ears twitched towards Jolly at her offer of study help. She was so... nice. And, um, really cute now that he looked at her. Jolly's voice seemed to paint her greys in brighter colors, mixing them perfectly. Even silent, he admired her subtle colors, unlike his own green coat. Acid felt his face flush a little bit.

"Oh wow, that's really nice of you! And I'd l-love to take you up on your offer. I'm so bad at motivating myself to s-study you see, so having another phony to help out with be well... helpful," he ended rather lamely. How To Sound Uncool, a book by Acid Beat. He paused for breath. Was he taking advantage of her? "But, oh, I don't want to take too much advantage of you, J-jolly. Can I call you that? Oh, you were about to leave and I am standing her b-blocking you! I'm so sorry." Acid's tongue seemed to twist and trip and turn in on itself. He felt the tips of his ears flushed again and he blew an errant curl off his forehead, keeping one anxious blue eye of the little filly.

Perhaps one day his impulsiveness would indeed drag him into trouble again, but today it had helped him and Jolly out. The ghostly filly continued to smile gratefully at Acid, her head angling slightly while her pale eyes gleamed.

“It’s a very good lesson to learn! I’m happy to hear that you learned it,” she agreed. She bowed her head. “It’s nice to meet you, Acid Beat. That’s a really cool name. I like it a lot, and it really suits you! At least, appearance-wise.” Jolly nodded knowingly. “I used to fit my name too, but my colors faded a bit…” The phony’s voice drifted off and her pale eyes turned blank as she briefly found herself lost in unpleasant memories before she managed to snap herself out of it.

“Anyways! Yes, I’d be more than happy to help you with your studies. Once you get into a routine, I think it’ll be much easier for you to sit down and study. But setting a routine can always be hard. I’ve found that if you have someone else to help you, setting it can be easier, since someone is reminding you and such.” She giggled. “That’s what everyone calls me, so it’s okay. You can call me Jolly, and I’ll call you Acid. How does that sound?” Somehow, the other phony wasn’t acting quite as confident as before, but it didn’t bother her at all. Everyone had their nervous moments, though she couldn’t figure out what was making him nervous.

She picked up her bag and slung it over her back. “Are you free now? We can go to my house and start studying there if you want. Otherwise we can set something else up later.”

Acid looked the little filly up and down. He didn't anything wrong with how she looked at all! A slight frown puckered his lips. "But your name does suit you! You're p-pretty and nice and jolly! Like candy, I guess..." Ohhhh crap. He desperately hoped she wouldn't notice he called her pretty. Acid was most definitely NOT the most suave of phonies. He was saved from his blunder mainly by the fact that Jolly just seemed to talk on, switching gears back to studying.

Her ears twitched and swiveled towards her. "Hmm... It is, um, very hard to m-me to stitch to a schedule. I get distracted easily. And I'd love to call you Jolly, Jolly!" He chuckled a little at his own awkward phrasing. "I would love to g-go to your house and study! If you're sure I won't be a bother... I've always wanted a study buddy." Acid mentally high-fived himself. Not only did it seem like he got himself a studying partner, but she was a cute filly to boot! It was too bad he wasn't handsome to match her cuteness. He shrugged the thought away.

Her ears flicked with pleasure. “Thank you! I’m glad you think that way, though I can’t say I agree with your opinion…” The filly’s smile turned slightly pained as she briefly averted her eyes before laughing it off.

“Yeah, it’s hard for a lot of phonies. It was hard for me at first too! But I’ve gotten used to it.” She half-nodded toward the door. “Me too! It’s always fun to study with somephony, plus it can be really helpful too. Since it looks like you’re free, let’s head over to my house right now.” She softly exited the classroom and happily skipped down the road toward her house, but always made sure to match her pace with Acid’s. “So, what kind of stuff do you like to do in your free time? Oh, and are you hungry? I can get you some snacks once we get there.”

Acid noticed her awkward laugh... something must have happened. But she really was so very pretty! But for now, he had just met here, he couldn't ask... Maybe one day. "I am free, luckily." Though, even if Acid had had prior commitments, he woudl've found a way out of them. It wasn't everyday somephony was so helpful. After gathering his ferw books, he walked contentedly beside her, enjoying her carefree skipping. Itwas infectious and soon he was rushing right along with her.

"I'm always hungry. I can eat naything." Acid smiled cheekily at Jolly. He felt in his gut that they could be very good friends. It was a nice feeling. "Hmmm, in my free time I like... colors and light shows. Like, matching music with colors. Your voice reminds me of the prettiest pale grey. I also like talking to cute fillies." He winked awkwardly, a clear attempt to make a joke.

“Great! My house isn’t too far. We should be there in five minutes or so.”

Light laughter. “That’s good! Being a picky eater can make things difficult, but fortunately I have a lot of things at my house. We can have some sweets first. I love sweets,” Jolly answered with a smile. “Wow! I’ve never seen a light show before. What’s it like?” She paused, trying to take in his compliment. “My…voice isn’t that pretty.” She laughed it off with the flick of her tail. Unfortunately for Acid, Jolly hadn’t fully taken in the meanings behind that last bit. “Haha! I’m sure a lot of phonies like that too. It’d be nice if I was cute too…” And again, her voice drifted off.

"A light show is awesome! They do them a lot at my dad's work. But basically, you can make colors meld into each other or match the music... Everyone's tone pf voice reminds me of different colors, you see. Yours is really so nice, calming, but with flashes of color. Er, that's what it reminds me of..." He blushed a little, ducking his head in embarrassment. Oh gosh, had he been babbling? There was something about this filly that made him want to talk about anything, everything. Suddenly, he realized what she had sad.

"It’d be nice if I was cute too…”

Acid's head whipped up. "Hey.. um, you know, Jolly, you are cute, even if you don't think so. I think so..." He trailed off slowly.

She smiled. “That sounds amazing! You’ll have to take me to one someday, okay? I really want to see a light show.”

Jolly cocked her head. Different colors? It was a new concept she couldn’t wrap her head around. Maybe someday she would be able to understand, but for now she simply nodded her head. “I see! That’s very nice of you to say.” She smiled. Her ears twitched, and she nearly stopped in her tracks. “W-What?” Her pale cheeks flushed red as she looked away and nervously adjusted the strap of her bag. “Oh. You must be mist—…I mean. That’s..that’s kind of you to say that.” Her smile turned shy. “I don’t get that a lot, not recently, so thank you. Really.”

She forced a certain bounce into her step as she neared her home. “Here we are! It’s nice out, so if you want to study in the front yard or backyard instead of inside, we can do that too. My mom planted some new flowers, so the view’s nice.”

Listening to her voice blending with the sounds outside was distracting and he found his eyes glazing over slightly. His brain was intent on analyzing the sounds he heard - finding the colors best suited for them... It was definitely a pale green kind of day. Her voice turned pink on the edges and he glanced over. His blue eyes widened at the sight of her stuttering blush. This filly was too cute! Realizing he was staring, he coughed and focused on Jolly's words.

"Uhhhm. I love the outside but I might get distracted with the flowers. Why don't we do a bit inside then out?" Acid decided not to press her about being cute although, well, she really was. He felt kind of bad for making her blush, to be honest. "Ah! You're blushing, sorry." He smiled sheepishly at the filly. "But really, thank you so much for offering to help me study. And I'd love to show you a light show someday, they're beautiful."

She laughed, the last remnants of her blush finally fading away against her pale skin as she nodded. “Sure! If you can’t decide then having both is always good,” she agreed. She shook her head. “No, not at all. I love to help anyphony that needs some help. If I can be of some use then I’m glad.” Jolly threw Acid another smile before she pushed open the fenced gate and trotted down the cobblestone path to the front porch.

They entered a spacious living room, plainly decorated with framed photos and paintings. The furniture was simple yet tasteful. “Feel free to grab a seat. I’ll get some snacks and drinks from the kitchen. I’m feeling a bit parched, what about you?”

Acid sat gingerly down and watched Jolly wander into the kitchen. Ah, she was so cute! No, he told himself, you are here to study. But, she had the prettiest sounding voice... He shook his mane, sending his curly hair flying everywhere. He had stood up for somephony, had made a new friend, got invited over to study... Acid's face lit with a goofy smile. Today was a good day, he decided.
