NAME: Catherine Wiitala

COLOUR: ■■■■■■ Death's Marrow #FAF2E7

AGE: 17

NATIONALITY: Finnish

HOME: Anna District

SCHOOL: Broussard's

APPEARANCE:
At just under six feet tall, and lanky, Catherine was often told that she would never make a proper ballet dancer. This didn't bother her much at all, Cedric the only real reason she attended, until she didn't. She did hold a good amount of lean muscles from all the years dancing, however, and found a strange pride in the idea when it came to comparing herself to many of the other girls, the fact that many of the girls around her were artists with little time for exercise a moot point.

Tired of the head of hair her mummo had once called "Her darling Annika's golden silk," Catherine took up dying her hair creme, to match her lovely eyes, one of the few things about herself she enjoyed. Not to say she finds herself unattractive. She simply sees little in enjoying herself, and therefore doesn't bother.

She does, however, enjoy the silhouette clean lined clothes leave on her. Whether it's a suit, or a well fitting cardigan with a skirt and boots, she prefers her clothes to be fuss-free, relying on colours and textures instead of accessories. The appeal of frills never made sense to her, save for the secret elation she would feel when dressed up for a recital. Cedric always seemed to make a point to compliment her dress on recital nights, and Catherine never felt the need to complain.

PERSONALITY:
Largely withdrawn, Catherine has developed the amazing ability to lie, able to convince others of who she wants them to see, all the while keeping her real thoughts and ambitions to herself. It made it easier to live with her mummo who, while loving Catherine dearly, was of the mind that there were certain ways Catherine should have been acting. As a result, the person Catherine has decided to present to people is as such:

Catherine Wiitala is an outgoing girl with a sunny disposition, surprising people with a quick wit that comes across as a hint of orneriness. GOOD SENTENCE Not an extrovert by definition, Catherine still enjoys socializing, making sure everyone feels included at social gatherings. Her peers find her easy to talk to, often coming to her when they need someone who will listen. Once at Broussard's, Catherine soon found herself filling the role of the campus "Big Sister," and gladly accepted it. She's quick to listen, and happy to offer any advice she feels comfortable giving. If she's unsure, she makes sure to say so. It wouldn't do to give someone bad advice.

While her family died when she was much, much younger, Catherine would make sure to answer that it is alive and well, existing instead in the form of her choir sisters and brothers. She loves them dearly. Despite being so open and easy-going, this small group is made up of the only people Catherine would consider her true friends. Her closest and most trusted friend is Marion Lemaire, a boy she has known since Kindergarten. Despite this, she is happy to let others confide in her, and more than willing to prove her trustworthiness, never one to spread rumours or lies. She sees no irony in this fact.

Or, there is this:

Catherine Wiitala is an emotionally absent girl who finds life tedious. Disinterested in day to day occurances, Catherine feels she could care less about the idea of socializing, and friendship. It does not bother her to be alone, doing nothing. She sometimes finds herself holding her breath, seeing how far she can get with the idea of accomplishing absolutely nothing. She used to cry with great regularity when she was younger, coming home from school and lying on the window seat as she stared at the sky. She does not care enough to cry any longer. She does not care about much anything, if she were allowed to be honest, with the exception of her mummo's wellbeing, and the delight she takes in watching decay consume. Catherine is fascinated by the fact that, while in the act of dying, no amount of consuming could correct the problem or stop one's fate. In the end, you are consumed, whether by wounds, fire, water. You give up your place as a consumer and continue the cycle.

This girl remains home, never going out to see the world, or bother with school. She remains where Catherine leaves her, every morning, until she returns at the end of the day, exhausted, and ready to no longer feel the burden of caring once more.

HISTORY
STICKS TO YOUR FEET

According to her mummo, Catherine was born in Turku, Finland, in the height of October, to Niko and Annika Wiitala. She remembers almost none of it, save for a bright and vivid memory of pale bodies lying in the grass, unmoving and unusually placed, hands clasped in one another's while smears painted halos around each. She moved to Tuefel at the age of 4 to live with her mummo, her last living relative, after both her parents were found dead in their backyard with Catherine lying between them, saying nothing, only watching the clouds pass overheard. It had been several days, the local wildlife already making work of both figures. The coworker that had found them said Catherine was strangely calm about it all, only looking with interest where they'd begun to be eaten.

Mummo did everything she could to cheer Catherine up in those first few years together. She surrounded Catherine with bright colours, took her to plays, enrolled her in ballet (something that Mummo had greatly enjoyed as a young lady). The one place Catherine seemed to react best, however, was the Utopian Opera House, despite the misgivings of Mummo's friends. Outside of this, however, Catherine spent most of her childhood in a quiet, brooding depression.

After time, Mummo gave up, believing things like Catherine's depression were now nothing more than an act put on for attention, constantly telling Catherine that she should simply "feel better," and that her life was too good for her to feel sad.

It was around the age of 11 that she finally decided she was tired of the snide remarks from her mummo, and the pitiful glances from her teachers, who recently tried to seek help for her from the school counselor. Under the guise of successful counseling sessions, Catherine mapped out what a functioning, healthy person was, and carefully worked on her lies until she was able to convince everyone that she was fine. Her mummo smiled again, after that, and Catherine believed that her own well being was a fair price to pay for that.

It was also around this time that she took note of consumption's place in every day life. She also remembered her parents' role in this cycle, albeit not in any detail. In her current life, it drifted from things as simple as breathing the air around her to continue living, to the act of eating, and essentially ending, something's life to continue her own. She devoured the words her teachers spoke to her, taking that knowledge being given to better her own. Realizing she wanted to know consumption more intimately, she began to push at it, watching with great interest when something was consumed. Fungus growing in a rotting stump. Vultures tugging at small things in the fields. However, a classmate once caught her intent study of a mostly clean skull being run through with worms, viewing Catherine with the most disgusted look. Catherine's damage control was swift and complete, but she realized she was going to have to account for this growing interest if she was going to maintain her cheery disposition. After all, eccentricity was always acceptable among the wealthy, and it wasn't as if Mummo's financial affairs were anything to sneeze at.

Deciding the Arts would be an acceptable place to be a little "eccentric," Catherine focused herself on singing, one of Broussard's few Contraltos. She also enjoyed ballet, having taken it since she was a child. However, she is not as rigorous in her dance studies, and secretly only goes now to see Cedric, her preferred dance partner, and crush since 8th grade.

She watched him die, later. CONGRATS An accident resulted in him being run through with a pipe. She wondered, idly, if she could have saved him. It had taken him some time to finally pass. Instead she stayed just out of his sight, the other aware she was there, but not able to see her. He talked to her, scared, angry, sobbing, and then, finally resigned, before he was silent. It was then that she called for help, perfectly explaining that she'd only just found him like this, and that he'd already been dead. Part of her wondered what it was that had consumed him. Perhaps his wounds. She convinced herself that she was not sad about his death, nor was she hurt. The lie worked, but she never returned to her dance class, and found she now fights in ballet slippers.

In her first year attending Broussard's, Mummo fell sick to vascular dementia. It became apparent when Catherine came home to find Mummo sitting on the kitchen floor, still in her nightgown. She explained that Bernard wouldn't turn off his terrible music, and she'd simply given up trying to reason with him. The kitchen was the farthest she could get, the entire upstairs consumed by the noise. After convincing her mummo that she had talked to her vaari, and that he had agreed to turn off his music, Catherine got her mummo back upstairs. A later doctor visit revealed the dementia. Coupled with the anxiety and forgetfulness, Catherine felt somewhat responsible, berating herself for not realizing something was wrong sooner. Mummo would join the cycle of consumption in the summer before Catherine's final year of Broussard's.

In home care was arranged, their nurse a young man that Catherine later consumed after convincing him to disappear in a way no one would ever even think to look. She took care to wait until after Mummo had passed, wanting her to have the best care possible up until the end. Devouring him filled her with a sense of elation she hadn't felt for some time now, now certain she was that much closer to becoming a part of the cycle. So very close.

HOME
IS NOWHERE

Neighbourhood: Anna District
Household: 1

Tuuli Keranen was the widow of Bernard Keranen, an engineer and amateur art collecter. Responsible for a new type of alloy that withstood the wear and tear of salt water better than the current standard, Bernard was smart to patent his work, after which he sold the patent for a large sum, and continued to live off the royalties of his work. Continuing in his field, he and Tuuli lived wealthily, but not overly so. Their house was modest, but decorated well, Tuuli in love with the the clean feel of white decor and natural light. As such, Catherine wants for little, surrounded by art and now the sole benefactor of her grandfather's trust fund. She prefers not to spend it, however, largely letting it sit there outside of groceries and other consumables. This is due largely to the fact that she sees little reason in spending it, outside of when she needs to present herself as sociable.

FAMILY
Father: Niko Wiitala - Deceased
Mother: Annika Wiitala - Deceased
Grandmother: Tuuli Keranen - Recently Deceased
Grandfather: Bernard Keranen - Deceased

Niko and Annika Wiitala were part of a long list of suicides that Spring, each taking place within a three mile radius of their suburb. All suicides involved couples stretched out in places of nature, in varying states of being consumed. Authorities have to date been unable to find any true connection among the suicides.

Tuuli Keranen died from a stroke after struggling with vascular dementia for over three years. It slowly ate away at her brain, Catherine a stranger to her mummo by the end.

FRIENDS
Cedric Gardyner - Recently Deceased
Marion Lemaire

Cedric Gardyner was Catherine's ballet partner for several years, eventually becoming a good friend that she rarely saw. He moved on to attend Teufel Town High, and due to their schedules, were only able to see each other at ballet, a few odd occasions aside. In the spring of her Junior year he died from an accident involving a leak and faulty pipework that authorities still do not fully understand.

Marion Lemaire is the only person still in Catherine's life that knows much of anything about her history. They met in a pre-Kindergarten group that met twice a week, where they bonded over watching the ants in the playground pick apart a piece of apple and carry the bits away. Marion is also one of the only people that doesn't fully buy into her lie, but chooses not to say anything. She does seem happier, but he's aware she's hiding something. Despite this, Catherine still enjoys his company. There's a certain amount of honesty she's allowed around him, and she appreciates that.
