xxItem: Astrolabe stolen on a smuggler's ship. Papa Teribault took the dirty and tarnished astrolabe as a trophy for his final galley sacking. He then gifted the astrolabe to his only son, Julian, upon his promotion from Line Officer to Field Grade Officer.
xxGrimm: Julian is the only son to a Baron and Baroness who live to serve the Imperial Guard's Navy. Both Grandfather, Father and Son have made a career out of the Navy and don't appear to be ending their terms. Julian obtained the Putesco as a gift from his father on promotion. A promotion he's been dreading as it takes him away from the docks and places him in war councils for talks of tactics. He will be boarded for the Operations Officer slot in Mishkan's war council.
xxPlague: Servos in Nature. Lyra is inquisitive in nature with a touch of wanderlust. She fits perfectly in Julian's journey and wishes to aid in any way she can, despite how infuriating her grimm can be. Eventually she will gain confidence of her own and branch off much like Julian did from his own family to find a career where she can make a difference. Oh yeah, and she's a pile of snark.

XXXXX|| P U T E S C O || XXThe Astrolabe xxxxxAn Astrolabe is an elaborate inclinometer, historically used by astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. Its many uses include locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, determining local time given local latitude and vice-versa, surveying, triangulation, and to cast horoscopes.
Astrolabes were further developed in the medieval era when astronomers introduced angular scales to the astrolabe, adding circles indicating azimuths on the horizon. It was widely used chiefly as an aid to navigation for religious purposes. Astrolabes were used to find the times of sunrise and the rising of fixed stars, to help schedule morning prayers.-Information gigged from Wikipedia. XXHistoryxxxxxThe worn astrolabe once belonged to the navigator of a small ship. The ship worked under the guise of a merchant's ship catering to Shyregoed and Mishkan. En route the ship would board several Ecaran refugees, seeking safety from the plague on Panymium's shore. In doing so most of the crew had already become infected with the plague.
The astrolabe rested against her navigator's chest as sores began to develop and grime built up on her tarnished body. The ship nor her crew members were fit to re-enter Panymium as they would become ground zero to an outbreak. During a routine check the ship was claimed infested, all nonessential hands fled from the rotting scene and the ship was easily sacked. The Astrolabe was found on the deck, dropped by her navigator in a final sprint to the ocean. She was claimed then by Captain August Teribault as a trophy to his final naval act of security.
Years passed and the Astrolabe sat, shuffled from office to council room. Untouched, tarnished and unclean. The plague that littered her surface was unnoticeable next to the grime and dirt. And she there she stayed.
Captain August Teribault had a single son, following in his footsteps. He climbed the ranks quickly and soon he would be taking the same step August had the day he claimed the astrolabe as his prize. The boy, Julian, had been born into his naval career as a navigator like his father before him. It seemed a fitting gesture to pass his memento to his son.
Julian took the astrolabe gratefully, the sentiment not lost on him. To this day he remains none the wiser to just what lies within.

XXXXX|| G R I M M ||
xxName: Julian Estiné CHET Teribault
xxSex: Male
xxAge: 37
xxBirth Place: Born in Afron.
xxCurrent Residence: XXXXX Julian travels often although his home and estate sit perched in the city of Afron. Over the course of a year he may travel between Eule, Ashcroft and Afron as required for his command- otherwise until recent events he is on the sea.
xxFaction: Imperial Guard – Naval detachment
xxAppointment: Fleet Commander awaiting promotion to Tactical Staff [S-3 Operations Shop].
xxAppearance: XXXXX His physique is toned and streamlined like a well-oiled machine. His muscular build prevents Julian from appearing gangly despite standing tall at six feet. Years on the sea have left his skin reddened and bronzed, cracked by salt water and assaulted by the sun. In short Julian is weathered. Despite his dark complexion, his hair is a tarnished gold- bright against the surrounding ocean and easy to see even from a distance. His eyes, a stormy grey, are a little sunken, beaten by the wind and sun. Both his hair and eyes are distinct familial traits.
xx Personality: XXXXX As the only son in his family, Julian has craved his father's attention from a young age. He lived for his father. When his father was at sea, Julian would take wooden boats and run to the shoreline; enacting tales of naval battles and pretending to rescue his sisters from monsters of the deep. And whenever he returned, Julian would thrive under the praise and care the man lavished on his boy. He would do anything to feel those weathered and calloused hands ruffled his hair when he climbed into his father's lap. As he aged, Julian devoured the ships' logs of his father's expeditions. Soon it became apparent that he would follow in his father's footsteps, combing diligently through training manual to ensure his entrance into the imperial guard. This greedy fire for success did not dwindle with age. Luckily for Julian, his mother taught him moderation even as his father stoked the fires of ambition.
To Julian, the world is a series of data points: facts, concrete needs, requirements to exist. On ship the mission, weather, his men, food, security, communication: these are all that matter in his world of logic and rational thought. Thankfully Julian possesses a startling mental agility, allowing him to process facts quickly and react with an almost gut instinct. However, because of this, he is exceedingly focused and driven, keeping eye on everything to make sure it is running systematically and according to plan. His life has become a matter of attaining these data points. With the command of his own ship comes the need to know everything that happens on his ship, not only that which he can see. This is his command philosophy: always present.
Although Julian is well aware of his command poisition, he does not see himself as above those of a lower rank. This makes Julian somewhat of an oddity among his peers: he believes that all ranking officers should know how to carry out the tasks of even the lowest ranked cabin boy. His leadership requires this knowledge to extrapolate effects any command he gives will have on his team. This need dovetails back to his inherent greed for knowledge in general. It can safely be said that as a Captain Julian is aware and knowledgeable of the history and status of every man on his ship.
This personal requirement to know all about his crew is not compassion. Julian is a harsh Captain. To him the mission is paramount and any hint of endangering that success will be dealt with in a punishment proportional to the misdemeanor. Julian sees the larger picture and insures the men below him are aware of it as well. The men on his ship embody the ability to successfully complete a mission. No jeopardization of that is permitted. He encouraged the picture of him as the harshest captain, needing that healthy balance of fear and respect from his crew in order to function. He holds this view still as a fleet commander. although, he remains the captain of a galley, Julian also now controls a force of 12 other ships. Hundreds of lives are now directly under his thumb and, instead of crippling under the pressure, he thrives.
Despite his stringent command policies, Julian easily recognizes when that harsh leadership is needed or when it is time for merriment and fun. Socially, Julian is actually well-adapted. Due to careful upbringing, mostly from his social butterfly of a mother, he is a genuinely warm soul with a clear definition of when to don and drop his cloak of command. Even a private would be invited to share a drink and a meal with him once at dock. Julian is always concerned for the greater good; he has a strong desire to be well-received and excels in bringing the best out of others. At times he can be boisterous and overly merry should the ale be particularly free-flowing that night. However, even while inebriated he will maintain polite demeanor- just a bit louder and more wobbly than normal.
Generally, Julian enjoys crowds so he can hear stories and learn about people. Reading his father’s ship logs as a boy has given him an insatiable hunger for story after story, embellished or not. However, he is not a storyteller. Julian could not bear if he were somehow to spread misinformation and believes any attempt to tell his own stories would be seen as gloating. He prides himself on being an honest man and has never been known to lie. Facts are sacred objects to him and due to this he has always been a blunt man during command and catastrophically forward in a social setting. This lends him a certain kind of charm charm. Julian is an acquired taste.
Well-rounded in intelligence and compassion, Julian seeks adventure in his life and to attain the success his father enjoyed. Despite his determination, he never lets that goal get in the way of genuinely enjoying life. His moral compass will always point true north and he truly believes in a black and white life: good or evil only, even when there should be shades of gray. Time will only tell what his new political infused position will bring.
xx History: XXXXX From a young age, Julian has been enamored with his father’s gallivant in naval affairs. He’s read his logs on training and mission sets into the ocean and since infancy has been spoon-fed tales of monsters from the deep. Heroic men taking charge of the sea and taming the ocean- an impossible feat at best but one that sounds nice in the songs of a bard. He was fast learner and his comprehensive curve has always been steep however he’s conquered it with relative ease.
As a child he has been conditioned to take command and follow in his fathers foot steps, a quest he took on happily. Julian has always held a creative imagination, often reenacting stories from his father's travels at sea with a healthy mix of folklore and legends. His main defendant would be his younger sister- dragging her chubby hand in his to the yard of his estate and fight off devils from the ocean in order to protect her. Toy boats were made to float in the water, raced to see which one would win as they were tugged down the stream. When it was time to study, his mind was often galavanting in waves of his mind and he was often punished for day dreaming.
Julian has always had a healthy relationship with his siblings. He teased his eldest sister in his youth and she would respond with equal measures torment. His relationship with his younger sister was very different. She was the infant of the family and was to be protected at all costs. As they aged, the relationship between Johanna and Julian grew unto something stronger, they maintain playful banter but do care for one another, and Giselle is still seen as the infant. Although it infuriates her, Julian and Johanna save her no expense in expressing just how little they still see her.
Julian's mother has always nurtured him but did not err on the side of soft when punishments were to be reigned. She was strong with all three of her children and proved a perfect combination to them as how a mother should act. Nurture while allowing her children to fall and injure themselves, life lessons were taught in full. She was compassionate but strong even with the Steward that sought over the estate while Julian's father was training or at sea.
His father climbed the ranks in the Mishkan Naval branch of the Imperial guard at a steady pace. By the time Julian enlisted into the Imperial Guard, his father was already a commander of the Afron fleet. For Julian, military service had leveled the playing ground from the step up his family’s estate had once lent. Officership was an exciting expedition he embraced head on. When he turned 20 years of age he was given his first executive officer position as a navigator. He aided in the Galley Captain’s tactical choices whilst at sea acting as an invaluable asset to the greater effort of Panymese Security.
Julian spent three years in service as an executive officer he was promoted to command his own Galley. Achieving Captain of his own ship at the young age of 23 was no small achievement. He spent four years serving as Captain, his tactical proficiency making him one of the strongest captains in the fleet. He was respected for his audacity and competency at sea and equally feared for the stories of his iron fisted command methods. Julian was the first to be selected to lead a raid or boarding for smugglers and hostile thieves. His proficiency lead to success and he was ushered into the position of Afron Fleet Commander at 31 years of age.
There he was awarded distinguishable military service awards and medals for his efforts on the Mishkan front. During his six-year tenure he was successful for 87 smuggling ships be piracy or efforts of global trade despite the closed ports of Panymium, and countless accounts of illegal immigration seeking sanctuary from plague torn countries off the western sea.
Now at 37 years of age he is in the process to promotion to join as one of the youngest staff tactician. With this promotion comes a hefty change in lifestyle. As a line officer much of his life was spent aboard a ship. Now he’s transitioning from a life on the ocean to journey back on land. He will serve his time in war councils and meetings on tactics; he will spend more time developing training for staff officers and supervising than actually enacting.

xx Name: Lyra
xx Gender: Female
xx Personality: XXXXX Like a compass drawn to Polaris, Lyra’s moral compass never wavers. She believes that justice and the law are always right and good and that she has a personal responsibility to uphold those ideals. To her, the world is cast only in black and white. While Julian learns to perceive shades of grey easily, Lyra will childishly cling to her absolute views. Above all else she values security and stability, giving her a rather narrow-minded view when it comes to obeying authority. Lyra finds that security in rules and regulations, falling into the comfortable roll of not questioning any laws. She is blindly accepting of the laws set by someone else. This creates a puppet and master-like relationship between her and authority. Because of her dedication to upholding those ideals, she takes her responsibilities very seriously and is very dependable. Initially. Lyra is overly sensitive to questionably 'grey' actions, assigning good or bad intentions to other's actions even when there are none. She just wants everything to fit neatly in her black and white world. If stuck between what is morally right and what is lawful, if order no longer aligned with what was right, Lyra would experienmce great distress. A first, she might claw and cling to the need of obedience, both guilt and the sense that she might be causing harm would overwhelm her. At the very core of her being she believes she is good, and believe in goodness. Lyra would attempt to rebel against such a chaotic authority to create her own structured rules.
A warm and energetic soul, Lyra seeks constant approval from others. Knowing she can be of assistance is integral to her being. She was a tool and still needs that feeling of usefulness. As a consequence, she is easily hurt by indifference and doesn't understand unkindness. Lyra is a very giving soul and gains personal satisfaction from making others happy. She wants to be appreciated for who she is and also what she can provide. As a general rule, Lyra is very vocal about expressing her emotions and opinions. She's still much like a child when it comes to emotion and her expressions; she is factual, stark, and very, very forward. Her bluntness is not out of vindictiveness; she simply speaks the truth as she sees it. Although harsh, her words are innocent in delivery. Unfortunately, Lyra never thinks of how her words are perceived until after she’s spoken. To her, it’s never a personal attack; it’s just the facts. This isn’t to say she is unsympathetic to other's feelings; Lyra is exceedingly sensitive and empathetic to the emotions of those around her. Lyra just doesn’t think of those feelings before she speaks. Although she can be quite empathetic, sometimes she has a hard time seeing or accepting a difficult truth about someone she cares for. She will ignore and hide from the darkness inside someone's motives, from those shades of gray, for as long as she can.
Lyra is very sociable and a people-person. Although kind, outgoing, and gregarious even to strangers, she is a little more reserved than her Grimm. She inherently likes all people in an ‘innocent until proven guilty’ way and deems herself an excellent judge of character: which she is. Astrolabes were often used in divination; upon knowing the day and place where someone is born their personality and future can be read. Like the astrolabe she comes from, Lyra, upon touching someone, can sense the alignment of the heavens at their birth and is able to grasp a general form of their astrological 'personality'. She loves learning about people, and is absolutely fascinated with gossip. Each word that falls from their lips is like a snack of social knowledge for her consumption. Even though she enjoys hearing gossip, Lyra isn’t one to reciprocate, being more content to gain information than to spew a new tale. An extrovert through and through, Lyra often becomes agitated when isolated, feeling useless and dull. To combat this, she might strike up conversations with complete strangers and will talk about anything and everything that comes to mind.
The art of divination has always been easy for Lyra and she enjoys using her inherent knowledge of celestial bodies to read peoples' fortunes and make basic and very vague predictions of the future. Her innate sense of a person’s celestial alignment allows her to create deductions regarding their future and formulates motives for their emotions and actions, however irrational they may be. Her astrological skills are a comfort to Lyra as she uses them to rationalize the strange world around her. However, she keeps in mind that despite what someone's astrological sign may say about them, actions are far more telling. Any judgments she may pass will first be based on what she can garner from their actions, and then if there is still something she cannot comprehend, she will turn to divination. Using astrology, Lyra can deem irrational behaviors rational by analyzing different personalities to determine how someone's actions relate to who they are destined to be. Not only does astrology help her understand human emotions, it can also provide guidance and entertainment for those around her. Unfortunately, her method of divination does work on fellow plagues. To Lyra, fellow Plagues are a mystery and somewhat discomforting as there are no birth constellations associated with them. She is all too aware of the absolute difference between human and Plague. Plagues make her uncomfortable with their unpredictability and yet she is a plague: this contradiction is one that always floats in the back of her mind. She still remains wary of other plagues, despite being one, but can largely ignore the pile of null data they represent and focus solely on their actions to determine their makeup. One of Lyra's habits is to relate the plagues she meets to a any of her human acquaintances based on their behavior. This helps her to ease the sense of alienation she feels among plagues. Even still, she prefers the company of humans.
Her turmoil in dealing with personal acceptance will be ignored and rerouted to ambition in her field. Lyra channels her need to be of service into the Guard. Initially, she is content in the structure that comes with being Julian's aid as he assumes higher command. Absorbing his knowledge and experiences, Lyra provides any tactical or clerical help she can. Their Grimm-Plague relationship will is very symbiotic. Initially, Lyra feels a deep connection to Julian, which grows into an indebted notion of respect. Julian has taken the time to teach her his work and give her purpose, and she owes him. Once Lyra grows to learn and accept herself she will eventually break off and make her own way as a Plague in the Guard, doing whatever good she can. However, her connection with Julian will remain strong, and were he ever to call, Lyra will always come. She feels an intense obligation to both Julian and his family as his family shaped Julian and he shaped her.
Ultimately, the astrolabe is used to navigate, tell time, cast horoscopes, or determine location by planets and stars. Due to her nature as an Astrolabe, Lyra has the ability to know her global location. Another nod to her Putesco self lies in her restlessness when she cannot see the skies. She feels infinitely more at ease when Polaris and the stars light her world. The northern star's presence tames her like cold water tames thirst on a summer day. Adverse weather where clouds block her view of the heavens leeches away her energy. By night she feels the tug of the open road, smatterings of wanderlust that drag at her feet and mind. Lyra is most active at night, her imagination opens up and she may dream of traveling freely under a star lit sky. However her intentions of wandering astray never last long. Due to her sense of duty and comfort in structure she’d never leave Julian’s side for long lest the guilt eat away at her. Although she yearns for adventure, Lyra is painfully duty bound. Luckily enough, ask and she will receive- As Julian builds confidence in her loyalty, Lyra will be allowed to travel on errands as his aid on her own. This is where the beginning of her independence will plant seed.

While Julian learns to perceive the shades of grey easily, Lyra will childishly cling to her absolute views. The world of divination has been one of ease to her and she enjoys using her inherent knowledge of celestial bodies positioning of the sky to make base and very vague predictions of the future. She mostly dabbles in this study as a hobby or parlor trick. It provides mild guidance and entertainment for those around her- furthering her quest to be well received.

As an astrolabe, I also feel there are more characteristics that could be derived from her item that would be more attuned to it, if you must go that route. From your description, it sounds like astrolabes were highly flexible items with a number of uses, both mystical and practical. If you want to call back to her item more, why not reflect some of those? Awesome~ Changes made are outlined in the critique post. Crit no. 2? <3

Hey you, in regards to crit no. 2! I've added to Lyra's personality- specifically outlining her use of the mystic, her regards towards humans and plagues [with a note on her feelings towards different alignments] and her relationship with Julian. I've also snuck in a piece of what she wants to do with her thug lyfe/ambitions. <3 hope all is well
