After a successful last planting, what with the making of good friends with Miss Cass and actually managing to plant some vegetables, Abbi decided that perhaps she could take another chance with getting her hands dirty. Once she had decided to actually take a whack at planting more things to harvest later on, the girl had to first do all her research. It not only gave her something to do before the sun sank other than try to keep up with everything going on at Deus, but it was also something she hadn't realized she'd missed. The passage of time was odd, for she knew a handful of months had passed between leaving home and now, but no matter how hard she tried she just couldn't wrap her head around the feeling that she hadn't missed anything at all. That gave way to some rather upset feelings over all the wasted time asleep in that pod which Abbi was happy to curb with actual things to do. Namely, getting ready to plant things.
After a good pestering of one of her superiors for more seeds pleeeeasseeeeeee, she was finally rewarded a packet only to return it with the citation that it wasn't the fastest growing vegetable and therefore she needed something else. A good bit of needling was done before she was given more seeds, but with a happy hum the teen skipped out to her previous plot of land, the area situated a good piece away from the other plots of land as well as any other buildings. "Gooooood afternoon my little sunshine beauties!" She sing songed to the little radish sprouts that were so small you really had to squint to see them. A week and a half wasn't all that long to expect anything from freshly planted seeds, but Abbi had been dogged in her attempts to get the radishes to grow. Watering them at a steady rate and talking to them often seemed to have paid off.
{ Y'don't talk to me like that. } "Of course not! You're a nasty creature of darkness that would be happy to ensnare innocent souls." This was said matter of factly, with no malice or ill intent. The girl swung her bucket down next to her little row, a small shovel and one of her black journals resting alongside a few packets of seeds inside its metal canister. { Oooohhh~ But innocent souls are the yummiest! Just the way they squelch an-- } "TMI Viveca. Way, way TMI."

Grudgingly, he was starting to like plant duty. It was the most low key job after paper work and not quite so tedious, and he could breathe fresh air while he bent and knelt and stood. In the hot air. God damn it.
Shedding his coat and scarf in the greenhouse, he was debating going shirtless as well when he spotted a bright patch of fiery hair amongst brown dirt. Was that . . . Jack snatched a shovel from the shed and ambled over, peering at the girl as he passed. Yup: ginger. And a new one too, assuming full fledged hunters didn't feel the need to talk to their weapons aloud. She sounded remarkably young, though, and he had to wonder if this particular military employed fifteen year olds too.
"Sounds has theoretically improved plant growth," he commented, shovel slung over his shoulder. "Is that what you are doing?"

A bit of arranging of supplies was needed before Abbi could begin her new planting, so with a small, excited wiggle she stooped next to her bucket to think. Ok first, the coat had to come off because it was really warm outside and as much as she wanted to keep her skin from freckling any more than it already had, it couldn't really be helped. Hopefully the bit of sunscreen she had applied before coming out would keep her from burning, but it was going to be a gamble given she would probably take her time not only making sure she had all her supplies, but also going over the plans she had made for planting the perfect seeds. "So yesterday I read this really awesome book about the Island. Did you know we're located near the Bermuda Triangle? I find that particularly interesting cause, yanno, the mysterious triangle and all its oooohhh phenomenon!" The teen was happy to talk to her budding plants as she pulled out the shovel and carefully laid the seed packets next to them. "But that would also explain why its so hot here without this suddenly missing cloud cover I keep hearing about."Without a care as to who could hear her, Abbi happily chatted on and on about the fun things she had learned to her plants while she busied herself with opening the little black journal to find her notes. It wasn't until someone startled her by asking a question, someone who wasn't Viveca, that she paused. Her back was turned to the newcomer, thankfully, so the girl was able to arrange herself into looking not at all surprised (when she totally had been, eek!) before she turned around. The first thing she saw were... Legs. With a furrow of her brows her gaze traveled up... And up... And up a little bit more until Hellloooooo handsom-- Oh he's got green hair. Why didn't you warn me about someone sneaking up on me?!{ Ach, cause I love to hear yeh squeak. Itso cute! }That was probably meant to be a compliment, but Abbi only shrugged as nonchalantly as possible at the man towering over her, her journal casually set down in her lap. "A little bit. Its just a theory, but there's also evidence to prove that the increased amount of carbon dioxide projected in their direction from talking has had a positive increase in plant growth!" Whew, she'd said it right! Hopefully that was all right too, she was a little caught off guard. "So are you like... A botanist in a past life or something?" That would totally explain the green hair wow. Abbi Killian, genius at people.

"Correct," he said to the first part, a little surprised someone else knew that. "But no: bio-engineer. I enjoy reading a variety of magazines is all." Maybe she was one of those "looks fifteen but is actually twenty" chicks. Might have been hotter if she didn't look so pasty.
Finding a smooth patch of dirt next to her, he started to bury the head of the shovel in to make a few holes. "And what were you in this 'past life'?" Jack asked, amused by the terminology. Frankly he could blink and be back in Illinois without so much as a smudge on his memory now, unlike his first few days outside of the pod. "You hardly look a day outside of highschool."

If the green haired dude showed any sort of outward surprise at Abbi's random knowledge, she hadn't caught it and smiled up at him with a dopey grin. "Soooooo magazines? That's cool. YouTube videos are quicker though. And funnier." Therefore better, even if she would only imply such a thing. But she would keep that mostly to herself simply because Mr. Tall Dude had started conversation and she was not going to squander this opportunity.
Whatever good first impression she wanted to make, however, is ruined at the mention of high school. A pout formed on the girl's face and she wiggled the shovel she snatched up from the ground at him. "I am at least three months outside of high school!" Which was a very clear and important distinction! ...Wait... Just as quickly as the pout had formed it disappeared, replaced with a look of mild terror at telling her secret so quickly. "So maybe ok sure I was a high school student, but that's what past lives are for! They're the past and I am not in high school anymore!" One more wiggle of the shovel was given before she dropped it, the pout coming back.
If he had been so forward to say that she looked young, maybe... "I don't look that young... Do I?" Why was everyone saying that anyways?!

"Eh." He made a see sawing motion with his hand. "Would've pegged you in the sixteen-seventeen range." Good to know she was legal though; she seemed very emphatic about this, so clearly age was important to her.
Or maybe the chick was as eager to let go of the old life as some were here. He knew he was.
Jack began to nudge some of the excess dirt off to the side in a meticulous manner, flattening out the top until it formed a small plateau by the hole. "Got a name, Three Months Out?" he asked. "I didn't know Deus recruited fresh out of high school . . . Hell, maybe this isn't the high end operation I thought it was going to be when the recruiter found me. More like those Japanese cartoon things."

The see-saw motion was like a scale to determine her fate, too low or just right? Even though she had just been sixteen, to hear that she looked so young was pretty terrible. And since he had been so exact in his guess (she wasn't even a whole month into being seventeen aaauugghhh), Abbi decided it was probably in her best interests to just keep mum on the whole thing. Even if she had been the one to ask. Wanting a moment to collect her thoughts, she pretended to be busy with putting aside her notebook in favor of her shovel. Thinking better of it, she pulled up her knees to roll down her socks a little, scrunching them so they wouldn't get too terribly caked with dirt. After another fretful moment of shuffling her things around she shifted onto her knees only to sit back on her haunches and crane back to look at Mr. Green Hair. "Abbi Killian. And yours?"A moment later she noticed his handiwork in the dirt. "I have some seeds, want me to drop them in?" A hand pointed to the bucket with the packets inside before it went up and out for a shake. "Ehhhhh I dunno. This doesn't really fit any anime archetypes." Her hands came back together, both pointer fingers out and touching. "Its too fantastical to be a slice of life, there's no political intrigue or princesses. No elves or fairies to be fantasy, we're not in space so sci-fi is out... If its otome, its the weirdest otome game I've ever played..." One finger flipped up for each category, the pointer finger of her other hands touching the pad lightly in turn. "I guess if we're really stretching it'd be academy fantasy, but you look a bit old for an academy anime."But he sure had the hair for it!

Jack watched her list off genres without batting an eye. Alright: weird ginger kid know it all it was. The hell was an otome anyway? Actually, no, nevermind, he probably didn't want to know.
"Old?" Jack repeated, scoffing with a smirk. "Twenty is just right, more like. I've had more hands run through my hair than combs~" He demonstrated, half for show, half to actually push his bangs out of his eyes, rather than shake her hand. "Jack Hawthorn. Go ahead and start planting--the faster I can get back into the labs the better."
Grabbing the shovel, he dug into another flat patch of ground with a bit too much enthusiasm--more like stabbing the earth than anything. "So! Eighteen and fresh from high school. What made you decide throwing yourself at monsters was a better career path?"

If the man's sincere belief in his own self was not so genuine, Abbi might have laughed at the over the top display of self love. Even though she did giggle lightly, there is still a twinge of jealousy. It doesn't much matter that his persona reeks of douchebaggery, he is still confident enough in himself that he doesn't care. That seems nice, especially when her hand shake is denied. "I don't think hairstylist hands count." Trying to look unphased by the lack of social nicety, Abbi instead busies herself with the seed packet, doing her best to pretend it doesn't matter. Unfortunately she isn't very good at acting and instead comes across as nervous. "It would take at least two bleaching's, if not more, to get your hair light enough to go green and you don't really look like the kinda guy to do all that yourself." Lilac eyes looked up to him for a moment before she dropped her gaze with a shrug. "So why are you here Jack? If you don't want to plant, just leave the shovel and go play. I'll uh... I mean I was going to do it on my own, so I might as well carry on as planned." Another simple shrug as she looked over his holes. They looked far too deep for these plants, but she didn't really want to tell him in case he didn't like being questioned. It would probably be a really bad time to inform him that all work and no play made Jack a dull boy too, though the teen was a little of the opinion that he was a bit dull already. Unable to really let it go, Abbi mumbled a soft "Well actually I'm seventeen" before she hurried onto the next question. "Being a hero and getting to save the world sounds way better than studying and joining the corporate rat race, don'tcha think?" She laughed a little, still turning the seed packet in her hands. "I mean, knowing there are people here like me is way nicer too... All I knew before were liars online.. This is for real." And definitely nicer.

He snickered. "And if my hair was light enough naturally?" he argued, although he was out of his depth on this topic. He just asked for something and it happened mostly. "I am here because, distasteful work or not, it needs to be done. Four hands can accomplish more than two, I figure."
Jack did hear that mutter, though, and it made him raise a brow. "Late birthday or skipped a grade?" he prompted.
He shrugged at her answer, neutral for the most part. "A race is there to compel competition. Without it, the world would be so much duller and innovation would cease." Her last comment, however, had him slightly more interested.
Clearly giving her an intent look was enough to make the girl elaborate.

"Impossible. Even if it was light enough to dye green, it wouldn't have turned out green. You still would have had to strip all the color out of it and basically get it white. It wouldn't turn fully green with any hint of blonde still in it." It was easy to rattle all this off like she'd actually been familiar with the process, when in fact she'd only spent a month obsessed with YouTube hair dye tutorials. That had been a fun few weeks hoping that maybe she too could have hair that was any color other than orange, but it had died the day Dad gave her a flat 'no' and threatened to take away her laptop if she didn't "stop that nonsense". Spoil sport. "Alrighty then!" She chirped, ripping open a packet of seeds finally and carefully shaking out one seed. Back to smiling lightly she shuffled over to the first hole Jack had dug, quietly pushing some dirt back in before she dropped the seed in, smushed it down with her thumb and began to pull more dirt over it.
For whatever reason she felt it necessary to look up, finding that she had to keep her gaze going skyward longer just to find Jack's face. When she did finally seem to pick it out from the sky there was an eyebrow raised down at her. "B-both." Darn, he'd heard! Viveca offered a sassy reminder that the teen had spoken aloud but Abbi only shrugged it off with a bashful look. "My birthday is in September and I uh... I skipped third grade." But now she really didn't want to talk about that so she shurgged once more.
Thankfully there was some nice distraction in the form of a rebuttal and Abbi latched onto that. "Yeah but not everyone wants to compete or innovate. Some people just want to live their lives. And look, they start the whole race and competition thing really early." A hand cut through the air before she dropped another seed into one of the holes. It was far too deep, but it was too late to take it out now so all the teen could do was move the dirt back on. "I didn't even know what I wanted to do for college, so this was just better... Why are you here?"
While she waited for his response she looked back up to find another look given to her. This guy was kind of intense in that he expected her to just respond to all his unspoken prompts. Unfortunately for Abbi, she totally would. "Th-there was this uh... This website I used to go on a little... I wasn't uh, very active... But it was about people who um... They said they saw ghosts and shadows and stuff. Which is why I joined cause I saw shadows and junk... But I think most of them were makin' it up." Why was he just staring at her like that?! Oh gosh he was totally going to judge her for being on a site like that ugh maybe she could just run away now...
