The day before, he had acquiesced to Owain's insistence upon helping those hunters that had been doing the farmwork that had, apparently, only recently begun on this island. After a long day of that, Jack felt it was time to do his own thing, and thankfully his partner had agreed with little fuss.

(( A schedule should never be the same twice, after all! Always find a new way to keep your brain at work, )) the giant chirped.

Right. Like listening to him wasn't a daily chore.

Having taken a jog around the island, Jack decided it was about time to make his way to the labs on the pretense of . . . something to let him stay where it was cool. He'd figure something out along the way. It was in passing that he saw the dilapidated basketball court he had been to several times previously. Nobody was there yet . . . And the orange ball looked inviting. Hmm.

Chugging some water from a near empty bottle, he approached and dipped down to snatch the ball, setting the bottle down as he spun it between his hands. Contemplating the rusty hoop, he bounced the ball a few times and tossed, watching it hit the rim with a loud creak. Sigh.

She was restless. And getting tired of having no power in the dorms. Or really, no power anywhere. And the MRE's... she wasn't even going to go there! So, to pass the time and not allow herself to go crazy, Fini had been volunteering for various jobs around the island in cleaning up. Or patrolling. But it was starting to wear on her.

:: I'd say you should just relax, precious. But... ::

:: Exactly. :: Fini sighed. There just wasn't anywhere to enjoy such a pastime.

Earlier in the morning, she'd done some patrolling again, having needed a break from the heavy lifting from assisting in re-building. Of course, nothing had happened it she'd had one long, boring morning. Now she was ready to go seek out someplace cool to rest, if she could.

A... sound she'd not heard for some time caught her attention as she passed by what she'd learned was a basketball court. Not that it looked like one at the moment. The net was still swaying from impact and the hoop looked as if someone had been shaking it to death. Clearly, it was in need of a remodel as well. However it was the hunter standing in the center of the court that had her attention.

:: What is it with all the boils on this island having charming looks? :: Vashi muttered.

Fini's lips twitched a little as she moved curiously towards the individual. "Hey there, how's it going?" She called, giving a small wave as she walked onto the court.

He was retrieving the ball when someone hailed him. (( You have a natural charm! )) boasted the giant happily. (( Now, if you might, I've noticed your social interactions have tended to lean towards the not so sightly, so perhaps if you would-- ))

Jack mentally cut him off (he at least learned how to do that part quickly) as he bent down and snatched the basketball up. "Very sadly," he replied with a puff of air as he turned to the other hunter. "I feel like this place could sap the happiness out of a Care Bear." He meant specifically the rusty court, though it could be applicable to the island as a whole really. As he let the ball spin between his hands, he offered a polite smile. "I'm not supposing there's an overgrown soccer field I could take advantage of instead?"

Oh god did she know that feeling. Fini sighed, nodding her head in complete agreement. Whether he meant the rust or the island itself, at some point, every hunter could understand that statement. "I'd recommend keeping the Care Bear's back in the Kingdom of Caring." She said dryly, a smile playing at her lips. "I mean, you have seen some of our division leaders, right? Try picturing them with a Care Bear." She would just die (probably literally) to see Caelius or Allan as one! Though, she had a funny feeling that Allan actually would do something like that.

:: Precious... what the hell is a... Care Bear? ::

:: ... I'll explain later and show you, if I can. ::

Fini tried not to outwardly face-palm. "If there is one out here somewhere, you might have to do some gardening or a little more demolishing to find it." She said apologetically. "I honestly can't remember if I've seen one." Not that she'd paid attention or looked. "I'm Fini, by the way." She added, twisting her hair up into a messy bun so it was out of her face and off her neck.

He scoffed. "I could never wear gardening gloves again and it would still be too soon," Jack drawled, to Owain's dismay. "Farming isn't my primary concern, whatever my partner or task master says."

(( Crops will be your food source very soon by the looks of it! Do not discount that value as others' food supplies dwindle. ))

He made a mental note of it for later.

"Jack. Jack Hawthorn," he greeted, his smile growing to appear more receptive. "And no, I haven't actually, though I'm glad you can't smell the 'fresh from the pod' scent on me any longer. Bit bored out of my mind if you couldn't tell." One had to be to voluntarily stay in this sad state of a play area. "I'm not supposing you're up for a game, Miss Fini?"

She couldn't help but laugh at that. And completely agree. "Can't say that anyone ever claimed I had a 'green thumb'." Fini said with a smile. "S'why I've been trying to do patrols or some other useful task. Pretty sure that there are a few people that would have my head if I killed off the crops."

:: That might be amusing to watching~ ::

Of course he'd find it amusing.

"Pleasure to meet you, Jack!" Fini replied before laughing a bit again. "Oh I know that feeling. Both feelings, actually. Have to admit I'm just as bored." And patrolling or helping to rebuild s**t only went so far. His question surprised her, and Fini had to consider it. She hadn't played in... a long time. But there really wasn't much else to do. And Jack seemed nice enough.

"I think I can be talked into one." She said with a sheepish grin. "Though you'll have to forgive me if I'm not the best. Been a while since I last played."

:: Making a fool of yourself is equally entertaining. :: Vashi added, clearly going to enjoy this.

He surveyed her for a moment: decent height, at least a little toned, nice long hair, good eyes--though he could have done without the scars. Nasty marring things, scars. But this body he would not mind watching in action, even if it constituted only one afternoon.

The right corner of his mouth tugged higher into a lop-sided smirk. "Haven't played in a while myself technically. I'll go easy on you," Jack teased as he spun the basketball again and dribbled between his hands several times. "First to six shots wins? I'll even let you go first~" He bounced the ball in Fini's direction and stepped back, gesturing for her to go on.

Five was an ugly number as well. Six was nice and even and, hopefully, short enough to keep them entertained.

"I like to multitask, so you might find yourself answering a few questions as we go. There's still quite a bit I don't know about being a hunter."

Kyrieko
idk uhhhh we could roll 1d8 for each shot, evens it gets in and odds is out? Since Jack really was into basketball I'm letting him get it in if he rolls 3-8, but if Fini played a lot too she can do that as well~

She just rolled her eyes at him. Or up at him. He really was kind of tall. But nice to look at. Annnd okay enough of that! Fini grinned watching the ball. "Oh come now! If you go easy on me, I can't really claim I defeated you, now can I?" She teased, pretty sure Jack was going to whoop her a** in this game. Where she knew how to play, he knew how to win. But no one ever said she wasn't a competitive person!

The ball came her way and she bounced it from one hand to the other, testing the response and giving it a little dribble. "Sounds like we both found something interesting to do!"

Fini eyed Jack, checking if he was ready. "How sweet of you~" She teased and side-stepped around him (in theory), the sound of the ball bouncing against the ground echoing around them.

"Ask your questions, dear Jack! I'll try to answer them seriously." With a laugh, she gave the ball a good heft towards the hoop...

And watched it bounce off the backboard.

:: Oh this should be amusing. :: Vashi rumbled with amusement. Fini just sighed.

"Anything would be more interesting than work," he pointed out, following the arc of the basketball closely so that he took the minimum amount of steps to get to it; truly an engineer in more than one fashion. "As the saying goes: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy~" he added with a wink, dribbling the ball back to the line.

Dear was a bit much, though. He found the term irksome and too familiar at this stage.

But Jack continued to smile anyway, eyeballing the hoop for several seconds before, almost unblinkingly, he lifted onto his toes and tossed the ball. It hit the faded red square on the headboard and rolled right into the hoop. "A level above taking it easy on you, then," he said as he retrieved it (like a gentleman) and then tossed it her way with more strength behind it than the last time (maybe so not like a gentleman). Ah well.

He stepped off to the side. "So! Sun hunter, is it? I'm told you have the shortest life expectancy at Deus. Must be an exciting life, no?"

She watched as he easily retrieved the ball and then made it painfully obvious he knew exactly what he was doing while she was playing catch-up. Or trying to remember the last time she'd even played a friendly game of basketball.

"We are in complete agreement there!" Fini laughed, rolling her shoulders and giving him a sly look. "Oh does it, now? So tell me, Jack. Are you still a dull boy?" She teased, a little startled by the force of his throw when the ball came her way. She raised an eyebrow, cheshire smile curling her lips. That a boy! He wasn't going to hold back on her!

"I think we may have an understanding then." She added, twisting around and away from him to get a clearer shot. Since shooting over him wasn't gonna happen. It hadn't escaped her notice that he was tall.

To her gleeful surprise, the ball bounced off the backboard, skimmed the rim and dropped through the net. Haha! She'd actually made it in! This excitement was short lived as he asked his first question. And then she just snorted. "Is that what you heard? I guess I can't deny that's true." Fini paused, considering her reply. "Yeah, I guess it is exciting. We get tossed into the front lines, most of the time with Death hunters. Basically, we get to beat the s**t out of something while everyone else does the easy stuff." She winked.

Don't call me boy. He smiled wider to hide his irritation, making sure it timed well after that sly look of hers. "Not at all," he replied. "Basketball is one of three things I would never be bored of in this world."

Jack watched her next shot get in and once more lumbered over to retrieve it, dusting off the smudges it had been accumulating. "Front lines, yes. Personally I would consider 'attack the enemy' easier than what I find myself doing," he drawled as he found the line again and lazily let the ball fly soon afterwards, rolling around the rim before finally dipping into the net. "So! Tell me of your exploits. Any grisly mission your proudest moment yet?"

"One of three things?" She asked, not quite catching that she'd managed to irritate him a little. Or else she'd probably have done it again. "Okay, I gotta ask." Fini eyed Jack curiously, letting the unspoken question linger in the air before she finally asked it. "Just how tall are you?" Okay, so it was a ridiculous question but she wanted to know! And since he loved basketball, he had to be at least six foot, right?

:: Why would that matter? :: That dark but soft voice murmured, behaving himself for the time being.

:: Usually, basketball players in my world are always tall. ::

:: So the point of this... basketball is to toss a ball into the goal thing? :: Seemed kind of boring to him.

She just silently rolled her eyes at Vashi, watching as Jack scored yet again. She trudged over to collect the bouncing ball, dribbling it a little as she quietly thought over his question and comment. Perhaps what she did on the front lines was considered easier to a degree. The most dangerous job, yes. But difficult? Not... really. She eyed the hoop, lining up a shot and tossed the ball towards it, watching it smack against the backboard and bounce away from the hoop, before finally responding.

"Can't really say that any of them can qualify." She admitted. "They've all had things about them that makes each mission... unique. And some have just been downright impossible to believe actually happened." One in particular stood out. And made her hands ball into fists. God damned horseman! She offered Jack a small smile. "You'll soon find that most of our exploits blend together. And it becomes a daily habit to wonder what new and twisted mission the higher-ups will send you on."

Fini crossed her arms lightly, giving Jack a more friendly look. "So tell me something about you."

He chose not to elaborate since she chose not to pursue. "Six feet, seven inches," Jack stated as a matter of factly as he retrieved the ball. "I believe I've heard every exclamation and variation thereof about it. 'Freaky' is a common one. So is 'hot'." Grinning to himself, he dribbled the ball a few times and once again tossed it forward, though with a little too much strength behind it--the basketball smacked the board and sharply rebounded back to the ground, forcing him to jump and grab it before it ran away from them.

"I've read a few summaries: yetis and a siege. Not a lot of love for the Sahara either," he noted on his way back, bouncing the ball lazily. "I haven't exactly been on one yet, so go ahead: enlighten me on what sort of uniqueness I'll be dealing with here. As for something about me--"

Jack suddenly thrust the ball at her chest with a cheeky grin.

"I am decent at basketball."

Wow. He was tall, holy s**t! Then she giggled at him, thinking of a few other ones that had probably been used as well. "Really? Someone actually called you 'hot'?" She gave him a skeptical look, covering up another giggle with a cough as the ball rebounded back off the board. "I mean, 'hot' is just not good enough for you~" Fini added smoothly.

Yetis. She remembered them. And thank god she'd missed most of the Sahara. The stories from that were good enough for her, thanks! And then the ball was thust at her and she tried not to wince when catching it.

The snake.

"Clearly~" She said dryly, bouncing the ball with a single hand while contemplating a good example of the missions they were sent on. "As for the uniqueness- " She suddenly took a shot, watching the ball arch gracefully through the air to swish through the hoop. Fini shot that cheeky grin right back at him.

"That is hard to explain." She said, retriving the ball for him and tossing it his way. "For example, one mission that stands out too clearly in my mind at times was one where... " Fini frowned a little. "Honestly, I'm not sure how we wound up in the strange, almost alternate reality, sort of world. Our memories were lost. We thought we were different people. And we worked side by side with halloween creatures and horsemen." Okay, that time she couldn't mask the fury and shame that warred with one another thinking of... her. "Strange trials we have to go through. Memory loss. You're lucky to keep sane."

He raised one brow, first at that comment about "hot" not being enough (well hello there~), and then the other joined as she spoke. So there were alternate realities? Jack knew eh probably shouldn't be surprised, given that he was on a secret island training with a weapon that could talk while things were powered by carving runes into stones--but somehow the theory of multiple universes being proven right was just mindboggling.

How much of the realm of science would explode if they knew string theory had an actual application? The fact that it could affect memory was even more intriguing . . . He could hear the giant's quiet murmuring as he thought it over. They would discuss this later.

He gave a light grin. "Alternate dimensions and memory loss? Sounds like my kind of party." He took the basketball and didn't bother trying to aim this time, though somehow it managed to get into the hoop anyway. Passing Fini a sidelong glance, Jack then asked, "I can safely assume you developed some sort of relationship with one of them?" He had yet to see a horseman, so all he could assume was that they were . . . centaurs or something. Or ghastly shades riding equine figures. Either way, the chick looked like something disagreed with her.
