Dana had been obsessing about her first day of high school since she started middle school classes at Knightside. The days leading up to the first day of school had been full of awkward turmoil and family drama about tuition and the school of choice her father had placed her in.
Further tensions ended up resulting in a decision to have her board at the school instead of keeping her at home, even though St. Mags was local.
So it wasn't until the first day when Dana found herself faced with the crowded halls clutching a piece of paper with her class schedule scribbled on it that the full terror finally set in.
She didn't know what she was doing or where she was and the entire place and practice was completely foreign. These hallways were not her hallways, the only ones she'd known for her entire school career at Knightside.
The way people interacted and grouped up was almost alien, for all her romanticism and preparation for high school politics, seeing it in action was almost jarring. Normally confident and bubbly, Dana was suddenly acutely aware and self conscious of how she wore her uniform, her hair, her make up, even her bra size.
But she had to take some sort of action. With a deep exhale she walked up to the nearest girl who didn't look like she was in the middle of grand scale reunions and tried to project some sort of enthusiasm. "Hi! Do you know where the north quad is? I am totally lost."

Mayumi had had a somewhat unique experience in that her own days of being lost in the halls at Saint Mags took place when she was a junior. Or, perhaps more preciesely, that she had had the freshman experience twice, at Meadowview and then here for round two. Either way, it instilled a sense of sympathy in her for those who were going through the same thing now, for the new year. There were still a few areas of campus that she had not yet had to visit and was therefore unfamiliar with, but those locales aside, Mayumi considered it a duty to help out the fresh-girls if she could.
And here was one who looked like she could really use the help, too.
"North quad?" the grey-eyed girl repeated, looking up and around quickly to orient herself. Then she pointed down one hallway. "It's stupid they still call it that, because there are two big square grassy areas at the north end of campus, and for some reason they only call one of them a 'quad'," she replied. "But you get to both of them down this way, out this hallway. And if your schedule says 'north quad', then you want the shorter of the two buildings, the one without the clock."
Mayumi looked back to the other girl and smiled cheerfully. "Actually my class is in the other building, so if you want, I can walk with you most of the way there?" She shook her wrist a few times to correct two tangled charms on the bracelet around her wrist, then extended her hand to the younger girl. "My name's Mayumi."

Dana's own blue eyes glazed over as she automatically tuned the the explanation of this alien landscape. Something in her brain had decided this was a foreign language and refused to even attempt processing it.
"O-oh, uh," She snapped out of it to look at her schedule and frown as she examined it. "I was told-- yeeeeah... Okay."
She shook it off and held out a hand to take Mayumi's, covered in bracelets and wrist bands in an overdone attempt to establish some sort of individuality over the be-plaid skirted population she was now part of. With the boyish pixie cut and bleached hair streaks combined with plenty of heavy eye make up, the little freshmeat was clearly trying to hard too hard to figure out who she was and establish something.
"Hi! I'm Dana! I just started boarding, it's my first year."

Mayumi had learned in her time at Saint Magdalena's that there were two types of girls here: girls here for reform, and girls here because they had to be. She supposed that, coming from a painfully vanilla and comfortably middle-class family, she was technically in the former category herself. The auburn-haired girl also was acutely aware that the other girls in that category with her were here for actual reform, rather than just an a**l-retentive parent who could not handle the idea of a teenager growing up.
The girl who introduced herself as Dana did not appear to Mayumi to be one of the ones present for Saint Brutus' School for Incurably Criminal Girls. It was a pleasant relief, meeting a new student who at least outwardly did not look like she owned a switchblade.
"Well, um, welcome," Mayumi told her, forcing a pleasant smile. "I'll say, 'I hope you like it here' because it's polite, but I know it's probably sort of bullshit. On the other hand, the chores and the nuns inspire us to do well in our classes just so we can freaking graduate on time."
The grey-eyed girl started to walk in the direction she had pointed out before. "I like your hair, by the way," she went on, nodding to the other girl and then to the door at the end of the hallway in hopes of indicating that they should be walking quickly while they chatted. "I hope the nuns won't make you change it, though. I get away with mine because the color is still kind of natural and less obvious, I think."
