Sometimes, being homeschooled sucked.
For the most part, Minerva liked it. Her mother and grandmother had a way of making things fun, and never put too much pressure on her. She got to go on lots of cool trips to weird and interesting places. Her best friend Mystery was usually around, so they could play or work together or something fun. And best of all, she didn’t have to be in a building full of noisy kids for seven hours.
The downside, of course, was that she wasn’t in a building full of noisy kids for seven hours. It was just Mimi, Mama, Nana, and sometimes Mystery and her family, all day long. All people she loved, but nobody else. During the summer, she’d gotten to see more of her friends, so it was jarring when school started again and most of them were busy. Fortunately, school had to end sometime, and after that, there was time for all sorts of neat things.
“Mama, remember Anelie’s coming over today,” Minerva called as she passed her mother’s office. Her arms were full of dress-up supplies, clothes and accessories and hair doo-dads. Not that they had to play dress-up or pretend that day, but it was good to be prepared. She had already brought several books, DVDs, and arts and crafts materials to the living room. Whatever they decided to to, she had what they needed!
Now, all she needed was the friend in question.

The doorbell rang, quickly followed by another insistent ring, before Anelie realized it was probably rude to keep pressing the button. It had been a while since she had seen Minerva and with everything that had been happening in her lately, Anelie was excited for some quiet, simple girl time. Her mother was still busy with her hair, as she had been since they’d walked up the front steps, trying to get the thick locks of green back into shape. It had looked perfect this morning, but just one trip in the car with the window down had made it a complete mess. “It’s okay mummy. Minerva can fix it for me.” Today was going to be a great day. When the doorbell rang, Minerva nearly dropped her latest armload. She didn't, of course. Instead, she set the books in a neat stack on the floor. The living room couldn't rightly be called a mess; the clothes were all folded, and separated from the stacks of books and her makeup box. Still, it was definitely cluttered, and she had to hop over a couple of piles to make her way out of the room. "She's here, Mama!"
"I can hear that, dear."
It only took a few moments to walk to the door and, after checking to make sure she recognized the people outside, she opened it. "Hi Anelie! Hi, Mrs. Anelie's Mom!" Yes, she knew Anelie's last name, but this way was easier, and she was less likely to mess up the pronunciation. "Come on in!"
She led them inside, stopping at the first door. "My mom is in her office if you want to talk to her," she said, indicating the door. "We can go to the living room, Anelie! Or maybe the kitchen, if you're hungry. We have lots of fruit, and Mama made biscuits earlier."
She was practically itching to get away from the grown-ups. Not that she didn't like them; her mother was awesome, of course, and Mrs. Anelie's Mom was nice. But they couldn't really talk in front of them.

Minerva was the best. No matter how long the wait was between meetings, seeing her again always felt as if she had seen her just yesterday. "Hi Minerva." Anelie hurried inside, instantly reaching out to try taking her friend’s hand in her own. "Thank you, Minerva sweetie. You two have fun." Anelie mother granted them one last smile and then disappeared through the door. Anelie was just as ready to get away from any parental guidance and she was sure her friend had a lot of fun things planned for the day. "Biscuits first and then the living room." Who could turn down fresh-baked biscuits?
