Jack was still whistling merrily when they reached the field.

If he was honest with himself he was a touch nervous at the prospect of fighting. More excited and intrigued than that, though. Owain was certainly eager, popping joints in his head to the point that it was almost disgusting and happily going on about crushing things at long last (how marvelous!).

(( I am getting hungry just mentioning it, )) he added.

For what, Fear? He remembered from the lecture that it was Halloween's equivalent to atom particles, though it was thoroughly more versatile than he realized--but he would learn soon enough.

"This seems like a good spot." Jack stopped and stretched his arms behind his back, rolling his shoudlers as he smiled (almost patronizingly) at Minerva. "Have you sparred before?"

let's pretend I remembered to do this a while ago okay yay

Minerva's teeth left their marks on her lower lip as the trainee slowed to a stop and began shaking out her arms. The entire walk had been a nerve wracking, gut wrenching experience-- even if through it all Minerva was extremely aggravated and more ready than ever to let Blythe work her magic on a fellow hunter. The last time she sparred, she lost. She took only positivity from it, but all the same it was a loss. And whats more, the fact that it was a probability in all cases, including a training session with the green haired wise cracker before her, did not relieve the mounting pressure. While the stats were none of his business, she couldn't help but feel on some level a bit nervous herself. It made her hands quiver even as she finished loosening them up.

Slinking away from other trainee, Minnie stretched forward, reaching for her toes, while she gradually began to speak up. "Yes, I have." Righting herself, the woman pressed one arm across her chest, and then the other, before stepping toward Jack once more. The tilt of her head and the focus in her eyes read confidence, but beneath it all, particularly in the way her lips turned down and, of course, her hands shook... there was far more uncertainty than the latter. "Have you?"

"No. Just woke up, remember?" There was little point in lying about that when his lack of skills showed up, though Owain was so gung-ho about the prospect of fighting that if he could convert eagerness to energy, the battle would be a snap. Even if she had prior experience. In spite of it, more like.

It was nice to see her shake, even minutely.

Knuckles popped, Jack summoned the large sword to his hands, his legs immediately having to bend to compensate for the weight; it was hard to hide how surprised he looked, still unused to the weapon's presence. He inclined his head and cleared his throat, trying to maintain a cool air. "At your leisure, then," he said, hoping that size threw her off even a little as well.

Ask silly questions, get silly answers. Of course.

She cursed him and her own mental slip up silently. She cursed the heat and tension, and of all the stress inducing components for which she found herself struggling to keep composure within. But now, it seemed, the woman found... peace of mind, in a way. Vulgarity was kept mostly to the privacy of her own mind, the slightest hint of a grin rising an end of her lip.

Size certainly impressed her... or, rather, left an impression upon her. Less of a joke then anything else, the woman muttered 'Compensating for something?' before straightening up and summoning Blythe into the palms of each hand. The weapons tingled, a fit of laughter reverberating within the trainee's thoughts, provoking a short, unexpected giggle to come from her throat.

Minerva rotated the sickles independently, nearly in a rhythm of their own, before she let her smile fall and hiked a single brow. The green mist which trailed from the skull pair gathered heavily around her hands, so very pleased to be at the whim of their owner once more.

She had no idea what to say, so awkwardly Minerva muttered again, "Don't be shy with that thing." hoping it wouldn't be construed.

But she was probably better off staring at him all hard and determined-like.

He predicted the joke--it was an obvious one after all--and rolled his eyes. Those scythes were interesting, however, and Jack couldn't help but wonder what creature had been its raw material. Those actually looked like legitimate weapons from Halloween, while he was stuck with an oversized nerd.

Unfortunately, giving him room to misconstrue often meant having to deal with it. "I'm not shy once it's in my hands," he stated with a lopsided grin. "It's all a matter of how much you can take before you start to scream. Ladies first~" He tucked his elbows in to better bring the zweihander closer, unsure if that was correct defensive protocol but finding, as always, it was best to experiment.

Regrets. So many regrets.

Minerva let the awkwardness of his words sit for a moment, dismissing it in a sharp snort of breath before charging. Unfortunately in all of her haste, and what with Blythe's coaxing, the strength she meant to put behind her swing instead stayed behind her hard, narrowed gaze.

Rushing past him once the (rather gentle) hit was made, the woman peered over her shoulder, through tendrils of fallen curls. Maybe he'd think it was a warning shot.

No… probably not.

Many regrets indeed, as he started to scoff. "Lovetaps, babe? It might be one of my first times, but I like getting a little rough," Jack said with a grin, turning--and swinging his sword along with the motion to strike at her as she passed.

Flustered by his arrogance, Minerva was slow to react and the contact made between her shield and his sword was staggering. "Ahhh haha." The motion she offered with the sickle in hand was nearly comical in her effort to make it threatening. "Are you sure you haven't done this before?" While the talk seemed friendly in manner, the rush of her feet against the ground and the lunge she made toward Jack would be anything but.

… It was unfortunate for the death trainee, however, who so desperately wanted to knock the others confidence down ten-fold, that all of the building aggravation, heat, and anxiety would muddle her motions further and make the hard swing cut nothing more than the air between the two of them.

He laughed like this was just part of the game, which in a way it was. A sick sort of game where he derived pleasure from hitting things. "A woman with a sense of humor, excellent," he noted, hopping back from her swipe and leaping forward with another strike to keep her on her toes. His arm felt out of whack after the first one, though; he could feel it wasn't as strong on the downswing.

"Nope, one of the first! I can't help it if this thing's a bit on the big side, sweetheart~ You'll get used to it, I'm sure."

Was it terrible to want Jack's shield to fall, if just for a moment, while she went in for another blow? Yes. It was awful. And yet Minerva felt as if she wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of it…

His chuckle grated her nerves, mostly because she felt it was at her and not the entire ordeal itself, which only made her teeth sink more firmly into her lip.

"If you're trying to be charming, I don't see it. You might as well stop. " The trainee grunted, letting a rather limp rake of her weapon hit the target. It wasn't laying the hammer down on him, but it was a hit nonetheless. And it kind of made her smile.

She then dared to be the woman of her hometown, and not the proper trainee she had come to be here at Deus. "Are you compensating for something? Is that what this is? How old are you, anyway?" The words flowed like vomit that it was, and while it pleased a part of her to let them slip; Minerva couldn't shake the immediate regret.

"Who says I'm trying anything?" he asked with a lazy shrug. "If you don't like me, you can come out and say it like a big girl. Or a little one in this case." Oh he cracked himself up.

But hey, this was bar talk almost: just sizing each other up, having a little fun, getting a bit loose~ "Twenty," he replied, readjusting the grip on his weapon. "Twenty-one on Halloween. Save the date, babe~ However, you forget that the weapon chooses you, not the other way around. I didn't ask for a hunk of metal."

(( A zweihander, dear one! Not just any hunk of me--HEY! ))

"But it gets the job done." Smirking, he moved in for another strike.

Her own irritation toward Jack, or the irritation toward herself-- either one of those could have been the reasoning behind her feeble swings and bumbling motions. The other trainee held nothing back, and as it stood he remained in full control of the spar at hand. It was frustrating. And as much as she'd like to dispute herself on it; Minerva was growing tired. So he wasn't trying anything… or was he? Was that facetiousness? "You're… not?" She sputtered, not entirely disappointed if he wasn't, however certainly at odds with her own ability to interpret things.

Perhaps a bit of this had something to do with her own slack around the facility lately. How she had been put into a pod again shortly after being removed from one. How things were happening all around her, and for some reason she couldn't seem to move with them. The trainee couldn't say she was moving backwards, but there was no forward momentum either. Stuck. She felt a bit stuck. And Jack just would happen to be the one she'd run into, the one to take the brunt of her frustrations.

With this in mind the girl tried to smile. She tried to loosen up, take the words he spewed in stride; as difficult as it was to do so. With a humph, Minerva rolled her shoulders back again and continued. "Huh, That's how old I was when they came to me." Not enough to say they had much in common, but a start.

Staggering at his strike, the woman distanced herself from Jack and his sword, before readying one of her own.

"And all I'm saying is maybe it chose you for a reason."

"Yeah?" He grinned as he heard Owain's confirmation about charge status. Bracing himself for the hit, he grunted as their weapons collided. "Nice. Well, maybe he chose me because I can do this--"

He shoved her and stepped back for some room. When the runes lit up green, Jack felt his weapon grow substantially lighter and leapt forward, swinging with far more force than before.

"--and make it look cool~"

The bitter end.

Minerva wasn't often the sort to let passion get in the way of logic. She did her best to keep the two very much separate, if not one permanently disabled. However, the trainee had found it rather liberating to, if only for a short time, let her emotions get the better of her. While it didn't exactly make the woman feel any better, it certainly offered an outlet for every pent-up thought had since the start of the whole 'hunter' endeavor.

And she would have considered battling until the bitter end, if her energy meter weren't shot to hell.

Jack's swing was enough to practically knock her shield clear off the grid. Blythe gave out a painfully loud, and awfully belligerent wail, both in anger as well as frustration, while Minerva reeled from the hit in silence. She would admit to only the fact that someone from Deus had certainly chose Jack for some reason. He was cocky as hell, but tough.

"Not bad… " Her breath was audible through every word, as the trainee righted herself in place, and let out a heavy sigh. The bitter end… her impulses weren't strong enough to keep her going, not after that strike. De-summoning Blythe into two golden armbands, and securing them in their proper places, Minerva grimaced at the other trainee for a long, hard moment before shaking her head of curls.

Surprisingly enough, she didn't feel all that bad about losing. Or forfeiting, really. Not even to Jack. Still, she felt a bit at odds with him. With his cockiness. With his win. "Just goes to show, you can't always fight with blind fury…" Minerva attempted a joke, chuckled, before shaking her head again. This time she gave the other trainee a long, thoughtful look before pressing her lips together. "Maybe we can… do this again sometime. But as for now I really should get back to work. Too much time… wasted."
