Concept Species: Dire Wolves and Smilodons Coloration: Any and all, but there are superstitions on coloration. Territory: The face of a mountain overlooking a plentiful valley where prey animals live. The mountain's other face takes the brunt of the bad weather, leaving the side the pack occupies buffered from the worst of most storms. Basic Summary: Sayings sum up this pack best: two heads are better than one, I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Two dominant predator species in the area were tired of fighting over the prey and territory, so they joined forces.

History War. There was constant war. War over territory, war over food, war over water and shelter and who was better at hunting and raising their young. The dire wolves and smilodons were vicious towards each other, and they both suffered greatly for it. The dire wolves thought the sabers to be idiotic brutes, good for nothing but throwing their weight around, while the sabers whispered to one another how sly and backstabbing the dire wolves were, willing to sacrifice their own children to keep themselves alive. The two packs were at constant odds with one another, to the point where they were both at the end of their ropes. Cub numbers were non-existent, adults were fighting constantly and becoming severely injured for it, and the ones that were too old to do anything but act as council could do nothing to stop the senseless hatred and violence. Winter fell one year, bitter and cold, and the packs ceased their fighting as was the unspoken custom. It was a time to lick their wounds, re-group their remaining members, and gear up for when the slightly warmer days returned to resume their hateful battling. During the cold months that followed, a saber and a wolf happened across one another in their search for food. Both were children of the current leaders of the respective packs, and both were incredibly against the violence. The smilodon, Kreig, proposed the idea of hunting together while they spoke. The wolf, Spiritstep, agreed, and together they brought down a massive land sloth that had gotten lost in the weather. It was a moment of clarity for the two, and after enjoying their meal, they both went back to their respective packs to tell their stories to their parents. At first, the idea of being friends with their mortal enemies was laughed at. Kreig and Spiritstep continued to meet through the winter, talking of how they could convince their packs that hatred was not the answer. Working together was the ideal. It took many talks into the night, but finally the leaders of the two packs agreed to meet with their children. The frozen months were drawing to a close, and on the first day of the thawing season, six sets of paws met at a designated location down in the valley that was home to the animals they preyed upon. The talk was long, there was shouting and snarling and very nearly a fight, but in the end, the heirs to the pride won their argument. The change was slow, but steady. As Kreig and Spiritstep matured, so did their packs. Once both claimed the title of lead male and female in their packs, they began work on their final plan: to join the two packs into one. By this time most of the old members had died off, leaving a new generation free of most prejudice. Spiritstep and Kreig worked with their respective species into a very old age, and at the time of their deaths, the packs were no more. The hatred was gone, there was only love and respect between the canines and felines.

Ranks
Rulers
Alpha Wolf: Always female, this is the dire wolf that is in charge. She oversees the ceremonies, scholars, artisans, and is the voice of the people. She is the one to go to if there are disputes of any kind between members. Alpha Saber: Always male, this is the smilodon that is in charge. He oversees hunting, the warriors, keeping tabs on the prey in the valley below, and any enemy packs. If there is a question of safety or concern regarding food, seek him out.
Upper Caste
Daughter of Light: The chosen heir of the Alpha Wolf. She is groomed from birth to take over her mother's place as the Alpha Wolf. Treated with respect that is due, she will come to learn everything her mother has to teach her.
Son of Might The chosen heir of the Alpha Saber. He is groomed from birth to take over his father's place as the Alpha Saber. Treated with respect that is due, he will come to learn everything his father has to teach him.
Companion: The mate of the Alpha Wolf and Alpha Saber. They are allowed to take on a duty, but are not required to. They are respected for being chosen as the mates of the Alphas, for they do not take mates that are not worthy.
Progeny: The children of the Alpha Wolf and the Alpha Saber. They are treated with as much respect as the companions, as it is thought that two pure beings cannot produce ill will or evil. They can take up any duty they wish if they are not selected to succeed their father or mother.
Beta Wolf/Saber: There is only one at a time for each species, and they are the advisers to the Alphas. They are appointed directly by the Alphas after a life of wisdom and strength, proving themselves by age alone. It is common for the Betas to be much older than the Alphas. Treated as second in command, if the Alphas cannot be reached directly, they answer for them.
Middle Caste
Spiritstep: The default for dire wolves. Your dire wolf can specialize in something, or they can be a jack of all trades. Specializations include: hunter, soldier, artisan, nanny, or lore keeper.
Krieg: The default for smilodons. Your smilodon can specialize in something, or they can be a jack of all trades. Specializations include: hunter, soldier, medic, artisan, nanny, or lore keeper.
Hunter - They hunt! They work together to bring down large prey that will feed the pack. They must be skilled in stealth, relatively strong and fast, and diligent. You can't always succeed, after all! Perseverance is a key character trait. Hunters answer directly to the Alpha Saber, or the Beta Saber if the Alpha is unavailable.
Soldier - The defenders of the pack. This can range from small, lithe, fast individuals who will make good lookouts, to the big, burly, slow but powerhouse creatures who can take a hit and keep on coming. Soldiers answer directly to the Alpha Saber, or the Beta Saber if the Alpha is unavailable.
Medic - Those that are good with treating injuries might find this focus exhilarating. Taking down mammoths is a big deal, even to a skilled hunter. Injuries are not uncommon and it takes a steady paw and a strong stomach to help those in need. Medics answer directly to the Alpha Saber, or the Beta Saber if the Alpha is unavailable.
Artisan - If you can sing, dance, craft, or excel in any sort of art, this might be the focus for you. Artisans are very involved with the ceremonies and traditions of the pride and are generally the ring leaders during those times of the year, assisting the Alpha Wolf in heading up certain areas of the celebration. Artisans answer directly to the Alpha Wolf, or the Beta Wolf if the Alpha is unavailable.
Nanny - For those with a soft heart and a warm smile, who would rather play with adorable cubs than fight. They must be patient and kind, ready to deal with the wily wolves and the roughhousing sabers. Nannies answer directly to the Alpha Wolf, or the Beta Wolf if the Alpha is unavailable.
Lore Keeper - These intellectual individuals keep track of the history of the pride, as well as stories and traditions that need to be remembered. A keen eye for detail, they are also very involved in the ceremonies and help the artisans make sure everything is as it should be. When wartime comes, as it inevitably will, they are sought out for their knowledge of the past, to assure mistakes that were made are not made again. Lore Keepers answer directly to the Alpha Wolf, or the Beta Wolf if the Alpha is unavailable.
Lower Caste
Wanderer: The young adults of the pack. They are assigned to a spirit quest and, when they return from it, are considered an adult and can take on their appropriate title.
Ankle Biter: The youth of the pack. Their only job is to play and have fun!

Living
Environment A eastern mountain face is home for these predators. The western face is bare of trees save for a few strong scraggly things, and it's considered bad luck to set foot in the snow there. That side of the mountain is constantly taking the brunt of huge storms that whip through the mountain range, saving the eastern face from the worst of it. There are plenty of trees and caves on the eastern face that serve as a home and protection for the pack. Down in the valley at the foot of the mountains is a small paradise for prey animals. It's generally not very windy and tough, but plentiful grass grows without issue. Water flows nearly year round and, when it does freeze over, there are spots where it is easy to break through the ice to get to it. With food and water that is constant, the only real danger the pack faces are the things the mountain throws at them: avalanches from time to time, falling rocks, crevices that lead to certain death, and other natural things. The den area is protected by thick trees, though, and is more dirt than snow, providing a small, but safe haven from these natural disasters. Superstitions The general pack-dweller is fairly superstitious. Some of the most basic superstitions include the mountain they live on. It is considered bad luck to walk on the western face of the mountain (once the trees begin to thin, most will turn back for the safety of the eastern face), to hunt alone, to venture into the valley below without the intent of hunting, and to back track on your own footprints in the snow. Some superstitions for bad luck include being born feet first, having two different colored eyes, having a purely unnatural colored coat (such as bright purple with blue and red stripes. A coat that is mostly unnatural with some natural colors is not considered unlucky), and having a set of triplets or being part of a triplet. It is considered good luck to find feathers (many members weave feathers into their fur to show off their finds and take their good luck with them), to mark a young, unblemished tree with ones claws during their quest as a young adult, to eat ice from the streams when they freeze over, and to bump foreheads with new acquaintances. As far as appearance goes, lucky pelt colors are ones that are natural in color (greys, whites, blacks, browns, dull reds, yellows, oranges. Basically anything you see on real wolves/wild cats) that have some accent in an unnatural color. The ideal ratio for the best luck is about 80% natural to 20% unnatural. Green is a lucky eye color to have, and three paws of one color and one of another is incredibly lucky as well. Ceremonies Unity Celebration - The biggest ceremony takes place one moon cycle after the rivers in the mountains start to melt. It signifies the time the two old packs came together to form the one large one that is there today. This is the only time pack members go into the valley without the intent to hunt, and the bad luck stigma is not included for this day. There is dancing and singing, feasts and fun at the site of the original meeting. Spirit Quest - Taken on by all of the young adults, the wolves and sabers must venture off for at least a full moon. It is basically a survival test, to make sure they have what it takes to make it should the need arise. It's a time for self-discovery and decision making, and often times when the youth return, they are full-grown adults. Some even come with cubs in tow. The only requirement is to survive and to be away from the pack for one full moon cycle. MORE TO COME! Suggestions are welcome!
