[First post is just a lovely prompt from Zoo, second post is the response.]

The Descent

You stand at a door.

This door is not familiar. Your fingers reflectively trace the patterns of the door, your palm presses against the handle, instinctively.

But you do not remember.

The door is locked. Silent and foreboding, you can only stare back.

You do not remember.

Behind you.

You look around, and finally behind. A second door, this one however, is bright white where the other was dark.

That path is not for you. Revenge is not suited for your memories, think of instead, the Protection you can give to others.

Two doors. One black, one white. One closed, one open. It could hardly be called a choice but more of a calling.

I promised to help those who are in need, and I will keep and serve by my promise. Remember now, everything you are and have been, and remember your purpose, that to Protect. I am but one, yet with the support of those around me, will become one day, many.

Two doors one black, one white. No, just one door. You walk towards it, towards Protection-

- As you regain your sense of self, you once again regain your memories. More than your memories, you regain who you were, you regain your purpose and deep within your core you feel something moving, churning, ticking away. A drive. The need to Protect others, like how you were in turn, Protected as well. This shapes you, feeds into you, and you feel only warmth.

The door is ahead of you. Just one door. White. Blue. Protection.

There once was a king, a Great King. He left with him only memories behind, his Legacies. Destruction, Creation, Pride, Grief, Reflection, Revenge, and finally, his last legacy-

You walk towards the door.

-Protection.

The world was a peculiar place, if you could call this that. He didn't clearly remember it, nor did he recall how he'd found his way here. The door too, didn't ring any bells even as he looked up to it, reaching out to press his fingers along it, then his palms. Contact didn't make it any more clear, it didn't bring some great understanding.

But it helped to make it feel more like a reality, as if perhaps it really existed.

Though none of it made sense. None of it was something he could understand even as he toyed with the grooved along the dark depths of the door. Why had he found himself here, before such a thing? He reached out, for the handle of the door this time, giving it a tug. Locked, sealed away much like everything else. The world was a narrow, empty place. It's only inhabitant he and this door. No.. not this one. These. He slowly turned, hand still resting on the ebony grooves of the dark, almost frightening door as his gaze fell to the other.

Brilliant and light, shining with promise. Once more his gaze turned back to the first to the marred hand that rested on it. Somehow, such brilliance felt as if it didn't suite him, and yet then, as if to respond to his own personal turmoil over it, a voice silently echoed in his mind. Reassuring of something else, something far more kind to hear.

He wasn't a monster? But... it spoke of his memories. He frowned, looking back once more. He couldn't recall. Nothing came as he tried to confirm it himself, digging through the empty space that seemed to be his head. What memories did he have that suggested he could guard anyone? To protect them?

He let his hand fall from the black door, looking to it once more. Calloused, scarred, nails long and sharp. It seemed like a hand that knew of fighting. Yet the voice told him he wasn't suited for revenge? Then... had all of that come from trying to save others? He couldn't truly know. But it seemed nicer to think he had done good with his time, that the voice was right. Certainly, the notion was one he liked, because it meant never being alone.

Like he was now.

He shivered slightly as he realized it, coming back to reality long enough to hear how quiet it was. To feel the emptiness of the whole realm sinking in again. Perhaps, it wasn't just the words spoken that had been so comforting, but the presence of another among the nothingness. He wanted it to come back, just so he wouldn't be alone. If he was meant to protect, to save those around him. Did he not need to be near others to do just that?

He turned, looking once more to the brilliant source of light in the area, moving a few tentative steps to it. The black door was locked, he'd been told to protect. Didn't it only make sense to choose that, even if it wasn't much of a choice he was making. His steps were slow still, unsure of it all even as the voice spoke again. This time though, it was of itself. Of it's own purpose, seeming similar to what it claimed his was. To serve those in need and protect them, and with his help they could be something more? That seemed noble, proper enough. The concept of it pleasing, even as he still questioned his own being. If that was what the voice wanted it didn't seem so bad.

With that, revenge was left long behind, his steps more confident as he moved toward the source of light. Reaching out cautiously, then with more confidence as he felt his fingers close around the handle. It was then it felt as if something clicked inside him. No, not everything was clear, but some things. It was as if for a moment he remembered a world he'd forgotten, only to lose it again. Someone... something important. Things he'd treasured, he'd gained and lost. They were gone again before he could properly understand it all, but...

He had wanted to protect them. To save them from things. To see them smiling. To be a source of that happiness, of safety. To do what he could to ensure that. Such did sink in slowly, even as he tried to dig again, to pull up those faces that had flashed in and out of existence before he could comprehend. Nothing, it all seemed lost again in murk that was his mind, leaving only that pleasant warmth that he'd felt. Their existence had saved him, and in turn he would do what he could to save them. To protect all that was precious in the world.

Yes, it was best to think that voice was right. To believe it. A voice that matched what lay before him. Brilliant, filled with light and kindness. It too protected him in guiding him to what he wished for, so it was only fair to understand it. To follow those words. Even if he didn't fully know how he'd accomplish it, he could walk that path at least.

Even as the last words echoed in his mind, speaking of the legacies of a great king he found himself opening the door. Slowly stepping through the gleaming light as the final word faded away to the world.

Protection.
