What a strange place. She was not used to being in such an environment as a school. That was what her family had called it, right? Yes, yes. An Academy. Like her siblings had begun to attend. Well, perhaps she would find enjoyment out of such a place?
Though, she really could do without all the other students.
And crowded hallways.
Maybe this was not the right place for her.
The ghost gave a sigh, drifting to the side of the hall to avoid running into someone. Nessy kept her eyes down and tried to draw as little attention to herself as possible. Which she was doing a marvelous job at so far! At least she thought so.
Maybe she would seek out the library? Someplace quiet. And hopefully less crow-
Thunk!
Nessy suddenly found herself way too close to someone. She stumbled back and looked immediately to her feet. "I am, sorry." She whispered.

Xavier had been moping. Again.
He wandered through the corridors with a dejected look on his face, idly pulling stray feathers out of his hair every so often and dropping them on the floor, where they were quickly stampeded by passing students.
Trampled like my soul, thought Xavier morosely -
- and then promptly smacked straight into someone because when one is not paying attention to where they are going, one tends to run straight into obstacles they don't expect.
"Ow," he mumbled, rubbing his nose.

Nessy chanced a glance up at the boil in front of her, watching as he rubbed his nose. Whoops.
Was that her fault? Maybe she should apologize. Was that what one did in a situation like this?
"I don't think it's broken." She said instead in that small voice.
Hmm, this was awkward.
She shifted slightly, fingers curling around her opposite arm. "You... dropped a feather... " She noted, pointing to one of the trampled feathers on the ground.
Conversation. She was not good at them.

"No, it definitely is," said Xavier in a pathetic sort of voice, which was slightly muffled due to the fact that his hand was currently over his face as he rubbed his nose. A few stray feathers drifted downwards, pooling at his feet.
"Er," he said, and stared at the feather she was currently pointing at.
"Yes, well...I tend to drop a lot, I suppose..."

"Oh... " Oh it was broken?
Oh dear.
Nessy stood silently, staring at the boils face. Maybe she should look at it? Check it for him? Is that what one did when you were injured? But she had no skill in healing. Or telling if a nose really was broken or not.
Of its own accord, her form seemed to flicker and dim only to 'brighten' back up subtly. Then repeat every few minutes. A nervous gesture.
A few more feathers fell.
She still pointed towards the other ones.
"What is the purpose of it?" The ghost asked, crouching down to retrieve a fallen feather.

It probably looked relatively pathetic, with just the two of them standing there and looking at each other with identical despondent expressions, one of which who was looking more confused than the other.
Xavier wilted.
"They're, er, well," he said, his eyes following her as she picked up a feather. "They're... just a part of my hair I suppose they don't serve an actual purpose..."

She picked up one feather, pausing to stare as more seemed to flutter silently to the ground. Rising slowly, feather still in her hand, Nessy stared owlishly up at the boil.
Part of his hair?
This was his hair? How was that hair? The ghost twisted the feather one way and then the other.
"If... they are your hair, don't they protect your head?"
Nessy frowned. "You speak so quietly. Why?"
Like she was one to talk, really. Of course this did not cross her mind.

Xavier looked at her as though he had never before thought of this situation.
(Which he hadn't.)
"I, er, don't know," he said weakly. "I never...well," he cleared his throat, gave a little cough, and stooped, picking up a few stray feathers from the ground, though there was little point in this. Mostly it was just something to keep his hands occupied so he wouldn't have to look at the ghoul.
"I speak quietly because I speak quietly, why does anyone speak," Xavier mumbled.

Nessy just stared awkwardly back at the boil, wondering if she should have asked a different question?
This conversation thing was hard.
And awkward. How did other creatures manage this on a daily basis?!
She stepped back a fraction as he picked up some of the feathers, the held her hand out with the feather she'd grabbed. Did he want it back? Did one give back fallen feathers? Was it usual for someone to drop feathers like so in the first place?
"I have... not managed to find an adequate answer to that question." Nessy murmured, actually understanding what Xavier meant for once.

It was probably unfortunate that the pair of them were keeping all of their thoughts inside of their heads, considering that they were almost of the same thought process.
Awkward. Xavier eyed the feather warily.
"You keep it," he mumbled. "I, er, have a lot."

Her form started to fade a little again. She felt not shy or embarrassed but something close to awkward. Of course the fact she was managing to kind of carry on a conversation was a plus! Right?
Nessy stared down at the feather with a confused expression. What was she to do with a feather? He didn't want it back, so it was... a gift, yes?
"Oh." She whispered, still standing with the feather extended towards the boil.
She couldn't remember the last time she had been given a gift. Or what one did with them.
"You can... call me Vanessa." She murmured suddenly. "If you like. Or not, if you don't want to." Maybe she should have introduced herself from the start. This socializing thing was hard! kurotomato Brought to you by Remi slobber. b/c really remi |8

There was a long moment in which Xavier did a lot of shuffling of his feet, dropped a lot feathers on the ground, and waged a silent, internal battle within his head that ended with him finally lifting his head and very slowly stretching a hand out.
"Xavier," he mumbled. "Xavier Hollow."

She started to wonder if she'd done something wrong or said something one did not say in a conversation? The ghoul still stood awkwardly with the feather extended out, slowly very slowly lowering her hand as she watched the boil. And then he was stretching his own hand out and Nessy just blankly stared at it. Oh, did he want his feather back then?
He spoke, and she peered up at him.
Then slowly back down at his hand.
Oh. Oh! She knew this one! Hesitantly, Nessy stretched out her other hand, barely touching his hand with her own in a sort of hand shake.

Xavier shook Nessy's hand very quickly and then let go just as quickly, staring at the floor."It's nice to meet you...I think."

She let her hand fall to her side, finally, holding the feather still. The ghost just blinked at Xavier, form flickering back to a little more solidity.
What now? This was... awkward. Again.
"Y-Yes. Nice to meet you... too."
