Latte. Americano. Hot chocolate. Green-- The coffee shop buzzed as Ruthie waited for her date with the totally hot guy. Maybe he would kiss her and bodily injury wouldn't follow. --Tea. Mango Juice. She glanced at her phone. How long had it been since someone took her on an actual date? The minute changed. Her coffee steamed. She glanced out the window. Granted his picture was of a girl, but there weren't any girls on the internet, right? He was just shy. When she chatted with him, he sounded pretty manly and tough in a chill-bro-I'm-really-normal-not-gonna-kill-you way.

She bit her lip.

Maybe this was a mistake.

No! She shook her head. Not a mistake! She drank her coffee.

Right?

Raven knew she was meeting with a girl. Or at least she was highly sure that she was. Sadly it had been a girl who had responded to her slightly rushed dating profile, and here she was, going out with said girl to a coffee shop. When the blonde entered, she looked around, hoping that the bright purple hair of the picture would stand out against the backdrop of all of the other humdrum people.

And so it did. She made her way over to the girl and held out a hand. “I’m assuming you’re uh…Bewks?” She pronounced it like Bee Wicks, so, she really hoped the other girl would know what on earth she was saying. Hopefully. “I’m Mo Ra. It’s nice to meet you.” The girl was pretty. It was kind of nice…she supposed. Worst came to worst…they could have a nice conversation. This didn’t have to be a romantic date after all. And to be honest, she wasn’t sure she wanted it to be.

Oh look. A nice-looking blonde girl. Kind of like the one from that photo, but it couldn't be her, right? Oh no. Oh look she approaches. Why are you approaching, Blonde One? Why? Why why why why--

"Oh hello." Ruthie smiled, taking the girl's hand. EVERYTHING WAS WONDERFUL. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT. When would she tell her? "Please sit!"

She meant its pronunciation to be like "yew" and "books", but she refrained from correcting Mo Ra because she would correct a much greater misunderstanding.

"Mo you're really pretty." Ruthie blushed. "Like, really, really pretty, but I--" She took a swig of coffee. "AHHH." She ran her hand through her hair. "I--"

Could she say it?

How embarrassing!

Raven raised an eyebrow, not really knowing what to make of the sudden…outburst but finally it seemed like the outburst just…allowed something to break free inside of her and she started laughing. It started out as just a giggle, but when it ended the blonde had tears in her eyes, clutching at her stomach.

Finally she looked up, shaking her head. “My name. I’m Raven. I don’t want to date a girl, I’m so sorry for wasting your time.

She shook her head, flopping back against the chair. “I just…I was hoping for a guy to be interested in my profile…not a girl, but I don’t know. I wouldn’t mind hanging out if that would be okay with you…I think I just had a bad breakup…and I’m kind of a mess still…”

"HAHA. HA." Ruthie blushed furiously, stopping herself from crying in a fit of shame by slamming the drink to her mouth. "HAHAHA." She set it down and wiped her mouth. Okay. She could make it through this. No tears. No melancholy. She took a deep breath. "Aw, I'm sorry for wasting your time. You seem really sweet!" She giggled. "Oh?"

She leaned forward, studying Raven's expression.

"Bad breakup? Do tell? I mean, I'm sorry to hear it, but..." She smiled and shrugged. "Maybe the jerk deserved it. Did you do the loser justice?"

Raven nodded, sighing and looking up at the ceiling, wondering how to tell this story. “Well. He was my fiancé first off…and. He just got…We um. We worked at the same place, I’ll start with that…and…I guess our boss was a real jerk…but then our boss left and we were really without direction for a while and it was…getting kind of ridiculous.”

She glanced over at The girl, wondering if there would be any way she would see through this…and hoping it was a believable story….it was the truth after all. Mostly.

”Well, anyway. I had heard something from someone who used to know our boss, and I started doubting the validity of where we worked and who we worked for and yadda yadda…and I don’t know. I just wanted to get married…so I left. And he…he got promoted. So now he’s the boss, and even if I were to go back, I’m uncomfortable. And he’s in charge…and I just don’t want that, you know? I don’t want to bow to him. I want him to leave and be with me and we can do something else for someone else…”

The blonde swallowed, fingers going around her ringless ring finger. “I miss him though. And I just…I want him to be with me. And I want to know that I mean more to him than work does…It’s just…I feel…stupid. I guess. Stupid.”

"Hmmm..." Ruthie narrowed her gaze. Smiling, but wondering... "I don't think you're stupid, but...are you really ready, Raven?" She took a sip of her drink. "I mean, you sound kind of upset. Maybe there are still feelings?" She studied her for a lingering doubt or hint of desire--something to prove she didn't feel entirely over her ex-fiance. That movement around her finger, yes, that did the trick. "Besides!" She smiled. The sun warmed shined. "If he really loved you, he wouldn't let you feel subservient, right? He would treat you as an equal--no matter what the job says."

She nodded to emphasize her point.

"That is, if he loves you. Call me naive, but when we love someone, we make them feel special, honored, cherished, yes?" She laughed, turning pink. "I'm sorry!" She glanced away. "Hopeless romantic." She shrugged, grinning. "They call me Ruthie."

Raven nodded slowly and sighed. “I don’t know. I guess so…I miss him. I do. But I just…” She shrugged, though gave a little smile once again. “It’s a pleasure meeting you, Ruthie. Thanks for coming out here with me today. To be honest, you’ve made me feel a lot better already. So thanks.”

She looked at Ruthie’s cup of coffee and decided she needed one of those before she left this place. It all smelled delicious. “I love him. And I think he loves me…he looked pretty devastated when I walked out on him…I…I should go and try to fix things. I think.”

Shrugging, the blonde fiddled with her ringless finger again. “And I really think if I’m going to do it, it should be sooner rather than later…but what if he hates me now…? What am I supposed to do if he says he doesn’t want me?”

"Aw, sweetie. Thank you. It was a pleasure to meet you too." She smiled. The sun cast the shop gold. "I don't know him, so I can't help with that, but you seem extremely kind and beautiful, so he'd be a fool to reject you." She brought the cup to her lips. "People have always doubts about life-long romances as well. A bit of cold feet is natural."

The cashier rang up a young man. Raven played with her finger. Ruthie sensed she ached for him. She probably went on this date to escape her feelings--to push him further away and prove she didn't need him.

"Besides, if he insists you aren't the one--" She drew her notebook from her back and ripped out a sheet of paper. "You can always call me and we can go pick up hotties sometime." She jotted her number onto the sheet and pushed it toward Raven. "My treat."

The blonde gave a little smile, then sighed, nodding. “Boys are just stupid, I think. That’s the whole moral of the story. Maybe I should just start going after girls. It might be easier.” Or much more difficult. She had to admit, if she was forced to date someone like herself…well. She’d get tired of her too.

Raven reached out and took the paper, folding it in half and scribbling her own number onto it, tearing it off and passing it to Ruthie. “Likewise, if you just…want to hang or something. I could use more friends. I’m afraid for quite some time my life has been only about him. I need to branch out a bit, I think. Maybe that would help everything.”

She allowed another grin to show on her face and stood. “I should be going…I might get some ice cream just because. If you want to come, you’re more than welcome to, if not, well, we’ll hang out some other time, okay?”

Ruthie laughed. "Okay." She stood. "Raven, you'll be okay, okay?" She leaned over and gave her new friend THE BIGGEST HUG EVER. "I'm sorry you're sad, but you're super sweet and I think that anyone would be lucky to have you." She nodded and pulled away. "I was actually just about to finish an errand, but we'll hang out soon, okay?" She pocketed the number. "Also girls are nice?" She laughed. "And soft? And friendly?"

She brushed back her hair.

"I just like facial hair, I think. That's the whole reason I go after the dudes." She snickered. "Maybe not, I don't know! Men are confusing." She tossed her bag over her shoulder. "But thanks for coming out with me." She tossed out the empty cup.

Raven blinked at the hug, but then returned it happily, laughing. “You’re really sweet, Ruthie. And um. I guess they are, they’re pretty at the very least. Though, to be perfectly honest, boys can be pretty too.” When the girl mentioned facial hair, the blonde just really lost it, shaking her head. “You are completely adorable, so just thank you. You’ve made me feel at least a hundred percent better. I hope you find a big bearded man one day to make all of your dreams come true.”

The girl gave a little wave, then paused, leaning close and giving Esme a quick peck on the lips before darting out of the coffee shop.

No need to make things awkward. But she was seriously glad to have this new friend. Maybe friends were really all she needed. People who weren’t involved with anything. People who were just friends.

A very interesting thought.

Ruthie laughed. "Aw, Raven thank y--" And then lips on her lips. Well. This was unexpected! Ruthie reddened as her...friend?...dashed out of the shop. Did anyone see? She brushed back her hair and sighed, stepping outside. Well at least someone kissed her without intending to hurt her, right? Total plus. She leaned against the shop. She could use a hug. Or cuddles. Or warm soup. Anything to comfort. Maybe things seemed...easier lately, but she feared doom behind every corner, in each shadow.

She hoped Raven would stay safe. She couldn't stand her to fall to Chaos or die in the arms of a youma.

She started home.

At least someone liked her enough to kiss her.
