Not too far from Destiny City University in a well-traveled part of town was a building which had survived since the 1870s. The building housed three storefronts. The one on the left had the benefit of being on the street corner and was currently a French bakery and cafe. The one on the right was currently empty, but still displayed a sign for the film-development studio whose owner had finally accepted the fact that the age of digital photography had won.

The sign which hung above the store in the middle read "Johnny Zeitgeist" in gold lettering on garish purple and beneath that it read "Antiques & Collectibles". It's windows certainly displayed antiques, but the collectibles in question where still a mystery.

Inside, the store was currently devoid of customers and the only soul present was the part time help, Emry Farwood. Most of the bookkeeping had been taken care of earlier that day and the book he currently working in was his sketchbook for school.

This part was so cute and quaint! It was old and rustic, in his eyes, reminding him much of the old town Laurel in his home state of Maryland. Except here didn't seem SO crumbly. Never having been one to explore the city alone, today was quite an adventure for the boy, though his driver was still on speed dial just in case he found himself lost. It was too early to go home just yet, so instead, he took a break in his exploration to stop inside of a curio shop.

Perhaps curio wasn't the quite right word. It was indeed an old shop, the merchandise in the window were antiques, and even the sign said so. Though he was young, he did have a taste for the finer things in life, and one such thing was teacups. His mother, the sweet and bizarre woman she was, enjoyed tea parties now just as much as she did when she was just a little girl. There was no hesitation at all in showing off her collection at any point she could! How happy she would be if Isha were to bring home another lovely piece for her!

It was so very empty in the shop, and rather quiet too.. Almost unsettlingly so. Atleast he wasn't alone here. This shop did seem to have everything in it though, from clocks to chairs to lamps, everything seemed to be available here, and everything was probably fall older than he was. There was a man in here, sitting at the counter. In shops like these, it always seemed best to go about and ask for what you want directly, rather than browses. Especially being a teenager in such an unusual setting. It seemed so wrong to break the silence though..

"Excuse me, do you have any tea cups..?"

Setting his sketchbook aside, the white-haired boy waved deeper into the store.

"Most of the dishware is back there, just past those two grandfather clocks, though some pieces are scattered about in the displays. Did you have anything specific in mind?"

Emry was quite aware that it was unlikely a teenager would anything more specific in mind than "teacup", but he wasn't sure how trustworthy Isha was and wanted to make sure the kid knew that he would be paying attention. Antique mirrors were strategically positioned around the store so that Emry could see everything anyway.

"I'm afraid I couldn't name a brand, or anything. I know what to look for when I see it, but other than that, not too much.." He looked towards where the boy had waved at, then back to the boy again, at the sketch book in his hands.

"I suppose it gets pretty slow in here, so it's an opportune time to draw, right?" He tried to keep his voice pretty quiet, still bothered by breaking any silence that was between them. The boy was quite something to look at, with eyes a red that he had never seen before. They were intense, in his mind, and the rather stern look he had on his face was unnerving. He looked away from him, inspecting a teacup that sat on a shelf with the rest of the dishware. There was so much to choose from!

"May I ask, what are you drawing?"

"There are busy days and there are slow days, but it's slow enough that I can typically handle my shifts alone and get some classwork done on the side."

Emry took note of the fact that Isha was not pawing at all the merchandise and relaxed slightly. Slightly. This store was his duty and he must remain vigilant!

At the request to see his drawing, Emry flipped the sketchbook around to display a roughly penciled cluster of flowers and a photo reference clipped to the top which showed that the blossoms were a light blue.

"I saw these flowers in a garden last week and took a photo. Photos aren't ideal, but I'm not going to lurk in some stranger's garden while I sketch their flowers. I'm planning to use this sketch for my next woodblock."

"Classwork? I suppose that makes sense, the university is pretty much right around the corner. I'm still in highschool myself. Azure Valley. Well, I'm SUPPOSED to be attending school, but with arriving at the city in the middle of the summer, I haven't quite been there yet." Isha decided to put off his browsing for now to approach the other a bit closer, his gaze switching between the drawn flower and the photo before resting on Emry's eyes.

"Flowers are such lovely subjects, I think. Though I have no real talent for drawing. I DO dabble in flower arrangement though! I've been hanging about a flower shop in another part of town, learning what I can for my list. I'm sure if you asked, my teacher wouldn't mind letting you sit in during one of our lessons, or just wandering in one day to draw the subjects. He's quite kind, in my opinion." Not many people, when he mentioned his list cared much about it, so he wouldn't delve into it further until asked. As excited about it as he was, there was no need to force his excitement onto other people.

"Wood Block..? As in carving? Or am I interpreting this wrong?"

The mention of any of Destiny City's high schools was lost on Emry as he was not a native either. He only came here for the university.

An eyebrow did raise, however, at an odd phrase. The phrase itself wasn't odd, really, so much as the lack of context.

"Your...list?"

He would have left it at that, but he was genuinely curious about this florist.

"I sketch in nature preserves and parks on my days off, but knowing a good flower shop would be good for a rainy day. Could I get his name and address off you?"

Emry tapped his pencil on his sketchbook a couple times as Isha expressed his confusion.

"As in printing, though there is technically some carving involved. With wood block printing, you use a block of wood and carve what you want the white space to be out of the surface. The remaining surface gets the ink. if you want a picture with multiple colors, you need multiple blocks of wood and all the carvings need to be lined up perfectly."

He gestured to the picture.

'I'd like to get two blues, two greens and a sepia in this one."

"Ah! Yes, yes, my list!" In an instant, he reached into his bag, pulling out a neatly rolled up piece of paper. With a delicate, loving touch, he unraveled it, pressing it down onto the counter before the other. A few on the list had check marks beside them, but most of it seemed to be yet completed.

"In Hinduism, there was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the supreme god, named Krishna. It was said that that he knew 64 Kalā, or 64 preforming arts that he used to entertain people. I know that I can't master them all, but I do want to know the basics of each one! So far, I only have eleven that I'm working on, but with each day, I wish to know more and more." He pointed to the number seven, tandula-kusuma-bali-vikari, theart of preparing offerings from rice and flowers.

"I'm currently working on that one with my teacher. His name is Krishna, coincidentally! Krishna Dhawan, and he's the proprietor of Padma's Boutique. It's quite the lovely place, as long as you don't have very bad allergies, and he's a great teacher." He glanced at the picture once more, studying it with an untrained eye. To him, it would just be a basic shape, but if someone really wanted to do this, he figured there would have to be alot more detail than what he was seeing right there.

"It seems like alot of work, but I bet it's pretty stunning once it's completed. I'm not exactly the most creative with my own hands, so I really appreciate anyone who can take the time to do something that's beautiful AND complex."

Glancing over the list, Emry noticed one listing that seemed, perhaps, oddly translated.

"What is 'playing on music in water'?"

He finished scanning the list.

"And are you really going to prepare shrines to yourself or is that one of the one's you're skipping? Still, sixty-four is quite a list - and you've already learned how to mount jewels and basic mechanics? Some of these skills are pretty diverse. Er.....what sort of victory did you learn how to attain?"

He glanced down at his sketch. Emry was never really good at taking compliments, so he usually ignored them.

"It will be a lot of work. I can try to save some by using the same block for some layers by cutting away what I want to remain the first color before I print the second. But that will really limit how many prints I can make. It's really easy to make mistakes in the printing process, so I'd like to try making blocks for all of the colors."

"Some of them are kinda.. Kinda out there, to be honest, so I'm taking them by my own definition. So Playing on music in water is more like.. Making music with water. Like.. Glasses with water on them, or dripping sounds.. I doubt I'll find a teacher for such a thing around here. It might be a skill I'll have to teach myself, but what fun is that?" He tinged a slight rosy colored. Though the boy gave off complements freely and without restraint, he hardly ever received them himself.

"As for victory, that, and discipline went together! That was in the form of how to handle children successfully. I think I did pretty well, and I actually enjoyed it."

"With the blocks.. How often would you use them, after you got the prints you'd like? Do they get stashed away for use later, or would they be a one-time thing, before you go about for a new project?" He looked around a bit once more, hearing a car pass by rather loudly. And in that moment, he found a vase, small, but very beautiful in it's old age.

"Maybe at some point I could bring some flowers in for you, to help your quest for flowers out some. That way you could have your own, live subject to paint, rather than a photograph."

"I haven't decided what to do with the print blocks when I'm done with them. Some printmakers break their print blocks to prevent people from printing more; sort of a way to keep the supply limited. Still, most printmakers have to make several prints of the same series just to make sure they have a good one. Sometimes many more, if they want to sell a bunch."

Emry frowned at the offer of flowers. It's not that he wasn't grateful for the offer, but the idea of a high school kid bringing him flowers at work was just...weird.

"No, that's alright. I should really check out the flower shop myself, anyway. You could help me, though, if you can identify this flower."

He indicated the photo which, to someone who knew flowers which were currently in season and popular among gardeners and landscapers in the area (and quite likely florists), was obviously a hydrangea. The fact that it was blue implied the soil it was growing in had a high amount of aluminum.

"I should probably know what it's called, if I'm going to title the print."

"They really break them? I'm sure that makes sense, copyright and such, but it still seems such a waste. I think it might be cool to make a piece of art from all the blocks that you make over time. 3D art, you know? Or maybe it would be a bit much, I bet it takes some time to get just one block, imagine getting enough to make a piece of art as tall as I!"

Though his offer of flowers was turned down, it didn't feel awful at all, nope. It was simply a suggestion, since he was around flowers so often, as of recent. The flower in the photograph was familiar, yes, but it took a few moments for him to reach a conclusion.

"It's a hydrangea, I think. They aren't frequently mentioned in my studies, no, as they aren't really flowers loved by the gods. Not because they aren't lovely, more of the fact that there aren't really any hydrangea in the Indian Subcontinent.. The next thing we are going to do, is learn to make garlands for the statues of our gods and goddesses. Each diety has their own personal favorites, and mine are shared with two. Marigolds, for the god Ganapati, and champa, err.. Magnolia champaca, for the goddess Saraswati." Isha couldn't help but be proud of the knowledge he could share about his heritage. Too often it felt like he was the only person who thought anything about his home country, having been adopted and taken away from there.

"Ah, but look at me rant, distracting you from your art. I should go back to browsing. Unless you have some recommendations for teacups for me."

"The practice of breaking the printblocks came long before copyright, but I agree that it seems like a waste. Maybe I could make abstract prints with the pieces....like a patchwork quilt."

He grabbed his pencil when Isha mentioned the flower's name.

"Hydrangea? How do you spell that?"

Did his ears deceive him? Did this kid mention magnolias? Play cool Emry, don't act desperate for this information.

"So I know what marigolds are. We grew those in kindergarten. What's a...magnolia champaca?"

Now Isha was apologizing. Stupid kid, that's not how this works. Wait, no....

"Actually, I should be the one apologizing for distracting you from browsing. I was about to put this sketchbook away anyway. My only recommendation is that if you're looking for a teacup to use, don't buy those."

Where Emry pointed was a set of six cups, each a different color painted over with an intricate golden design. They were arranged on a golden tray and were maybe a third of the size of an average teacup.

"Those aren't teacups. They're for Turkish coffee."

"So maybe it would be a bit of something to work with. If you did manage to do such a thing, I'd love to see it. And It's H-Y-D-R-A-N-G-E-A, I think. Even if it's wrong, I think it's close enough to give you a correct answer if you were to look it up later to verify that my information is right." Spelling was such a terrible thing, and he was one who relied on spell check far too much. If he were to be given a spelling test with even the most basic of words, he was certain he'd get atleast a few of them wrong.

"Yeah, marigolds are fantastic! Each petal is a little flower in itself, and they can be eaten too. They are a little spicy though, so if you couldn't handle that, I wouldn't recommend simply plopping it into your mouth. The other one is also known as an Indian Magnolia, or a Jade Yellow Orchid Tree, but the second name honestly makes little sense to me." He quickly pulled out his phone, having taken pictures of the bloom, along with the other flowers of the gods during his research, and turned it around to show the boy.

"See? It's a lovely flower, and it smells wonderful too, though very strong. Yellow magnolias are offered to Saraswati, as it represents her wisdom, and yellow is her favorite color. They grow high up on trees, and it's pretty hard to find them here in the states. It's truly a shame, but my teacher managed to get some to work with. How, I have no idea, but he did." Setting the phone down for the boy to continue on browsing through his pictures of various flowers, Isha went over to the cups he had pointed out. They were so very tiny, and vaugely reminded him of the fancy little espresso cups that he often found at his mother's fancy dinner parties.

"Yeah.. These would be a bit too small. They are nice though, but not quite suitable for a tea party." With a nod, he moved towards the back of the shop again, where the rest of the dishware was. After having such nice conversation, he wouldn't want to leave empty handed. It would be such a waste indeed..

"Thanks."

Emry jotted down the spelling of the blue flower.

The Indian magnolia was not the color he was expecting...the color he had recently become familiar with. But he wasn't so unfamiliar with flowers that he was confused. He knew not all roses were red.

"It is unfortunate that it this flower doesn't grow around here, but we have to be careful when we bring foreign plants to ecosystems where they are not native. Plants like kudzu, honeysuckle and wild roses were brought to the Americas for their beauty and aroma, but now they are choking out native species. In some places, even food plants such as blackberries and raspberries have destroyed some of the ecosystems they invaded."

He continued to browse through the photos on the phone as he lectured and as the boy wandered off to check on the teacups.
