It wasn't shaping up like it was going to be a productive night. He didn't feel productive. He felt pensive and uncertain, ghosts of his conversation early on with Buddingtonite coming to mind and crashing Topsy-turvy with his long ago conversations with Lady Pomona and his old practices with Sailor Aegir. He hadn't seen them at all. Are we the villains?

Leaning, arms folded, against the perimeter edge of a building roof while looking out over the amber glow of the night city was not what he would have predicted for himself in the terror of facing the valravn. He uncurled a huge hand and rubbed his finger's over the faded, nearly gone scars of more than a year ago where the thing had tried to claw through his chest to get to his starseed.

Thing? That was terrible. He knew what they were now, Youma. It had been a youma, which in turn must have been someone at some point. A fallen person, whether sacrificed to the cause of their war willingly or unwittingly. Someone maybe like Bazzite, who'd been a lieutenant. Were they all going to end up that way in the end? Was that what was happening to his lord, and why he was getting more and more wild?

It was difficult to reconcile that boy of 16 with the Youth, or young Man as he liked to consider, of now 18. He'd thought he was something then...trying hard to be thoughtful and mature. It was a surprise to look back on it and see the differences. Worse, to see what hadn't changed, or what mysteries he hadn't found some source to learn from. Obsidian had challenged him long ago to keep his eyes and ears open.

Yet he still lacked so much.
How could he expect to help, really and truly, and to serve faithfully, when he was still walking blind in the dark? The amber lights were too far and few on his path.

It wasn't safe for a girl to walk through the city at night. Lydia knew that as well as anyone else. It was why she went home as Irene, to give herself some measure of protection against the forces lurking out there. Or at least, that was what she told herself. Her parents thought that she took taxis home, and even though she was trying to prove to them that she didn't need their restrictions, she hadn't been able to tell them the truth about her travel methods. Her parents' rules were one thing, the team rules were another, and breaking those was somewhat more serious.

Didn't stop her from doing it night after night, though.

She changed her route up each time, to make sure that nobody followed her home. Not that every night was a battle. Sometimes there were youma for her to take care of, and sometimes there were youma that she had to run away from. And on rare occasions there were people on her path. Irene could feel this one before she saw him, the tingling sensation of wrongness- or do I feel that way to him? she wondered, remembering her conversation with Acanthite.

This guy, she realized as she drew closer, was big. It made her nervous, but she had to find out more. Psyche's story clashed with Acanthite's, and she had no idea what the Negaverse was like anymore. Clearly not all of the people were truly evil. If this one turned out to be violent, her magic would help her escape. Not talking was not an option.

"Good evening," she called, landing on the other edge of the roof he stood on. She held her arms out, palms open, in the universal gesture of not-carrying-a-deadly-weapon. After taking a few steps, she stopped, hoping to keep some measure of distance between them, in case she needed to run. "I apologize for the disturbance, but I wonder if I might have a few moments of your time."

Introspection, it seemed took too much attention and ...well.... thought. He'd completely missed senshi's approach, and startled visibly when she spoke- hand going to plastic painted haft of his foam LARP hammer before he let it drop, seeing her palms. Her phrasing, however was horribly confusing- it sounded like a door-to-door or telemarketer.

"Good....Evening?" he furrowed his brow and shifted his weight so that one hand was on his hip instead of his weapon, and the other rested casually on the roof ledge again. Was it a good evening? Well, it wasn't a bad one.

"Are....you....selling something? " Did senshi fund raise with cookies like girl scouts did? That seemed like a terrible idea. She didn't seem right off hostile, at least, unless it was a trick.

“Selling something?” Irene repeated, puzzled. She even looked around to make sure that she was the one being addressed. It wasn’t as though she was carrying anything, aside from the dove-shaped purse that she made sure to bring with her whenever she transformed. She put one hand over it, just in case this man was getting any ideas. True, most of the agents she had met weren’t thieves, but considering they were all supposed to be criminals, there was no way to be certain.

Once she was assured that they were the only ones in the area, she shook her head. “No, I’m not selling anything.” Well, except maybe a better way of life, but that could wait. She didn’t want to scare him off. “I want to find out more about you, and the organization that you work for. I want to try to open a dialogue, to solve things without anyone getting hurt.” It was a lofty goal, something that more experienced senshi had tried and failed to do, but that was no excuse to give up on it. Quitters never won, and all that.

“I assume this isn’t totally unamenable to you, or you would have attacked me already.” Irene crossed her fingers behind her back, hoping that her hunch was correct. If not, she would need to be prepared to run, and to make better introductions next time.

Titan bit his lower lip briefly, trying to puzzle any of that out. This was a very, very strange senshi. His tone at least was honest and entirely unpatronizing, "Only telemarketers talk like that. Or girl scouts. Selling something. "

Unamenable? What does it meeeeeeaaaaaan? He lifted his hand that was on the ledge to scratch thoughtfully in his goatee, "My English is not that good...you are talking very formal. It is good, but I am not the person to talk to about such things. "

"You showed your palms; I know the sign of it between warriors. So I don't attack. Maybe I should, but I can wait and listen. I can talk. What did you want to know? "

"I'm not selling anything," Irene stubbornly insisted. "If anything, I'm buying. Not that I have any money at the moment." Her hand instinctively clutched her purse tighter. If this person was so insistent that everything be about money, would he try to rob her? She had been telling the truth about not having cash, but her medicine could probably be sold if he was truly desperate.

Then, everything became clear. For a moment Lydia Sfakianos came out in full force as she leaned forward, her eyes bright. "Oh, are you from abroad? I apolo- that is, I'm sorry if I confused you. Where are you from? How long have you been here?" Did the Negaverse outsource all of their agents, or only the ones she met?

This was probably not the time to talk foreign countries, and certainly not the person to do it with, but for Lydia, asking about far-off places was instinctual. Only after Irene blurted out her questions did she realize that it might not be the best idea, and she tried to change the subject, though her curiosity was still apparent in the way she looked at the man.

"I meant to display- to show- that I don't have any weapons. I mean you no harm, and I won't attack you." If it came to that, she would run away. Fighting someone much bigger and stronger than herself was not the way she wanted to spend her commute. "All I want is to ask about the people you work with. Do they treat you well? Are you happy with them?"

Psyche had clearly been mistreated. Acanthite, on the other hand, painted a picture of a supportive group. Would this person's experience match up with one of theirs, or would it be something else altogether?

"I...I am an American. " He protested, "I was born on this soil."
Even if he did have trouble with all three languages spoken by his family. Where exactly he was from, though, didn't need to be answered. There weren't that many Scandinavians in the community of expats in Destiny City. It was too close.

But thankfully, she kept on and it didn't need to be addressed. And a loaded question it was. "The people I work with? The Negaverse?"

"I like many of them very much. Some I do not like so much at all. It is like any organization. I have great affection for my Lord, though. And the General Kings are strict but not without reason. We are pushed to be our best, for our own sake and that of our allies. "

"What about you? Do you like your Kingdom? Do they treat you well?"

Irene waved her hand dismissively at the man's protests. "It's not where you were born," she clarified, "but where you're from." And part of that was mindset. Irene didn't believe that she was just another citizen of Destiny City. She was a citizen of the world! Which, sadly, did not show up on passports. Not that she had a passport. One of these days, though.

As tempting as it was to press the issue, she knew there were more important things to talk about. Like the Negaverse! And, as she'd feared, this story was different from both Psyche's and Acanthite's, falling somewhere in the middle. "I see... may I ask why you dislike the ones you dislike? And why you like the ones you like?" That 'Lord' he mentioned was particularly interesting. Irene's first thought was of some godlike figure, but she figured he probably meant more of a Lords and Ladies type of person. Either that or something had gotten lost in translation.

If she was going to be asking questions, it was only fair for her to answer them as well. Even if they confused her a bit. "My Kingdom?" That was a new way of phrasing it. "I wouldn't call it a kingdom per se... I mean, I do have a Princess, but she's my captain, not my ruler." How could she explain this? "I can't speak for all senshi, but my team treats me very well. They look out for me, help me when I need it. They help me to become better, but they're never harsh about it." One particular training session with Iris stuck in her head, she she shuddered at the memory. "Well, almost never. And I suppose I was asking for it, that time."

Time to move on to the next question, she decided. "I'm glad you have people who look out for you as well." Always start with a compliment before saying something potentially critical. "If they're such nice people, though, then why do they tell you to fight us? Why do we have to fight at all?" That was the crux of this whole issue. If everyone was so nice, why weren't they nice to each other?

"The one I dislike is a mad dog, careless of things outside of himself. He has no honor. "

"He has no place on a team. He would be a weakness and a threat. What use is a sword with two blades and no handle? The hand that wields it is cut off."
He motioned with one hand, drawing fingertips along the first knuckles of his other in a cutting motion.

He talk of the lack of a kingdom on the senshi side wasn't much a surprise as it was another disappointing confirmation. Why were any of them even fighting on such a side? What was the point ? "You make it sound like its bad to just be fighting. It is natural. Lion prides fight each other for more land with prey on it, better shade. They fight the tigers and hyena. It is the same with men. One kingdom wants something, like land, or taxes, or stuff and so they fight. Or others defend against it happening. You senshi are invaders of the Earth Kingdom. If you want peace, you must give up your kingdom to the leaders of the Earth Kingdom. Become vassals. "

"At least as far as I know. I am no lord, and make none of the wants or decisions. I am a hammer that enforces their laws. "

Despite the somewhat rocky start, Irene was thrilled. This was what she was looking for. Helpful information about the kind of people in the Negaverse. It stood to reason that not everyone was the same. And it was somewhat reassuring that this man was against a member of his organization who was harmful to others. It gave her hope that maybe, some sort of solution could be reached through talking things out.

Then he went on, and her hope began to fade.

"I may not be an expert on the animal kingdom," she said slowly, trying to mask her horror. "But I do know that we are not lions or hyenas. What sets us apart from the animals you named is our ability to reason. To think about our actions, rather than acting on pure instinct." Of course, sometimes instinct took over. Irene thought about her last sparring match and blushed, but kept going. "I have invaded nothing. I was born here and have lived here all my life. If I fight, it's to protect myself and those I care about from those who would hurt us."

Not that she wanted to fight, especially with this man. Despite their difference in power level, she had no doubt that he would easily overpower her if it came down to a physical contest. "I have no kingdom to give up. I mean you no harm. So tell me: am I still just another tiger in this jungle? Or does this situation lay outside the laws you've been given?"

"I know that you are born here. I have met others, and they were like friends. It doesn't change the truth of it. I don't know how it works. But the truth of it is there just the same- the King is the Land. You're kingdoms and your souls are one- you are not from here."

"And you do have a kingdom, Lady. It is called whatever your name is. And you are sovereign of it. Only by giving of that sovereign to our greater nobles and becoming vassal are you ally to Earth. "

"That is their law, and they rule here. You aren't an exception to it, you see? We have Scouts who have done so, and they are marked by it as our allies. They wield powers like our own, given by our high nobles." Technically by their Queen, but it didn't seem right to talk of her to the enemy. "It doesn't matter if you don't mean harm if you are a noble. It is very unfortunate. But that has always been true, even in old days. It was the rite of presenting, a foreign noble had to present themselves to the sovereign of the land they came to and ask passage. None of you have done so. "

"I cannot speak to the moods of those in power, but it is a little extreme to just call that much an act of war. Most of you don't realize what you are, or what it all means. We aren't taught the rituals of monarchs seriously in school. "

"But it is serious."
"I would rather escort all of you to become a formal part of this home, to stand beside you as a brother and help to protect what you want to protect. If every senshi knelt, then there wouldn't be a war. There would be one kingdom. Or if they went home to their sovereign kingdoms, and let this one alone. "

In theory, Irene knew that she drew her power from an asteroid. She knew that it was possible to travel there. But she had never really thought about it that way. Was there a kingdom there? Was there even a point in going to visit?

Well, the answer to the second part was easy. The first part was harder. She thought back to her other trips to space. The Surrounding had been busy, but that was because of the normal people who were stuck there. The buildings were otherwise abandoned and decrepit. And the Moon Palace was a ruin. Why would the Negaverse want those places? Somehow she doubted that they were interested in archaeology.

"While what you say may have been true in the old days, the times have changed. The palaces I have seen were long abandoned. The kingdoms are dead. I am not sovereign of anything, and any station I may have had once is gone. Is it truly just to hunt me based on a position I don't hold- and never did- because an antiquated law says to? Or to banish me back there, where I would face certain death?"

She carefully didn't mention Iris, who, as a Princess, probably would have proved his point somehow. But the thought of Iris did raise a new point. "I know someone who had once pledged loyalty to your side, as you suggest. She was mistreated and abused, until we offered her sanctuary with us." Technically, that was all on ********* and Iris, but the other Asteroids had tried to be welcoming. Sort of. "The door swings both ways, you know. Why would I want to swear to people who might treat me as a second-class citizen, or worse?"

That wasn't what Acanthite had claimed, but Irene could only deal with one worldview at a time. And now she truly needed to know if Psyche's situation had been as dire as everyone claimed. Only having secondhand accounts of that situation was frustrating to say the least.

"Maybe it is just the past to you, 'old days'. But it is very much the present to some of ours." The hollow 'faces' behind the walls that led to the Rift for one. Each of those, and the many more frightening shadows that lurked inthe depths beyond were Youma from that First War. They were agents, warriors, people, who had memories and old hatreds. And that even answered the rest of her question as well.

"Places may be abandoned, but the strength of them is still green. Look at you- you are very young and beautiful. Your home is that inside. You are all seeds, looking for soil. Like...plants..." What did the park advisories call them? "Invasive spees*."

"I'm not one of our lords. I'm a soldier. It could be they worry you will be like that- unchecked the scouts will blossom here and then in tens years they WILL want their kingdoms back. But your homes are empty. So either you stay here and steal the land, or you steal the people and take them there to your home. Either way it is no good. But Maybe that isn't it at all. I don't know. I'm not close to any of the Konge."

"I don't like the idea of banishing to death. It isn't my decision. It isn't guaranteed you die out there. One eternal I met said her land was very overgrown. If you banded together, you could remake your courts. You wouldn't be alone, and you could stay where there was food and water. Maybe if you made a truce, you could trade for supplies with the leaders of my people. On the promises that leaving is what you were all doing- it would prove their words. If they were happy to see you go and meant only to protect this place, they would allow you some supply and the war would end."

"Or..maybe those of us new would. As I said, the old....perhaps not."

"Old wars make bitter hearts and stiff hands- hands that don't remember how to uncurl from axe-haft or sword hilt. " He frowned when she mentioned be treated as less than a sister, "Those, and maybe ones like the officer I do not like, would treat a senshi so. It is not the norm, nor is it approved by our policies. The basic training treats those with us as allies. Training and what is put into practice...I can see how some would fail. I am sorry that you have gotten that idea. I would not see it so, and I have not done so myself."

“There may still be remnants of the armies of the past.” Though honestly, Irene doubted it. Hadn’t the last war been hundreds of years ago? How could anyone survive that long, even with magic? “Regardless, I am not one of them. I’m young because I haven’t been alive all that long, not because I’m being sustained by some ancient world. My existence isn’t choking anyone else’s.” At least, she assumed that was what he meant. It just wasn’t possible that by living, she was condemning someone else to death. The world didn’t work that way.

And the other worlds that he was talking about were dead, weren’t they? Iris hadn’t talked about hers much, though Irene knew that she had been there. Eunomia seemed to dislike the subject. All she knew was what she had seen on the moon and at the Surrounding. It was possible that they were the exception, rather than the rule. Without knowing, she didn’t feel comfortable claiming otherwise.

Instead, she focused on the rest of what he was saying. “You say your people would be open to alliance if we left. Why is that option conditional on our departure? We’re not hurting anyone just by being here. It would be much more effective for everyone if we proceeded straight to negotiations. Nobody would have to be hurt, and everyone would benefit from such a relationship. But no,” she went on bitterly. “Everyone is too concerned with what went on hundreds of years ago to make a new life, new rules. When a culture is unable to adapt, it dies. Both your side and ours are in danger of that, if we can’t come to some sort of agreement.”

Why was it so difficult to live and let live? Irene couldn’t understand it at all, though she could see that the man was doing his best to explain it to her.

"I say they might be. I do not know for certain. “ Why was it so strange to her that as a foreign noble, the local nobles would want her to leave as part of a peace agreement? Especially when the problem was that the sushi were there, trying to live, both uninvited and unrecognized. He wasn't certain how to communicate it to her. She seemed far too stuck in the United Nations ideals of first world politics, which couldn't be further from his own conception of life. Government and Economics class had made his head hurt just sitting in it- and he had tests with the d's to prove it. "I...am not so solid on to give exact 'why'. You should talk to one of the quills, not a hammer ..."

Which is who?

It was the same problem he'd had when actually talking to Zinkenite. Who was even in the Information Branch? He was so bad at names! And he'd not met many, if any, of them. Alex? Yes, Alex is a general and he's in the info branch. I haven't met him in uniform. What was his name...

"Benitoite...? You could talk to him. " If it were possible in those moments, she could have seen smoke from Titan's proverbial gears. "Maybe. I don't know how how he interacts with enemies. Not so many are willing to talk, maybe. Not so many know the symbol."

He meant her opened palms. It was a universal sign, and yet still antiquated. "It is not so patient, our world beneath of life. "

"You should be careful if you make approaches alone. But with more than one, maybe they would think it was an ambush. I probably would. Maybe ignore that. I do not have such good advice."
