His ribs were aching, more each day- the fault of not enough rest and honestly? Too much time spent in a corset. He was fairly certain that medical professionals did not intend, when wrapping and caring for broken ribs, that the patient in question should then spend 6 hours or more a night wearing a classic, high-waist cincher.

It made breathing feel like fire. Patrolling was still a touch-and-go cause, but he had to keep at least the University safe. Thankfully it seemed that tonight was relatively quiet, unlike many before. He was not taking any of the advice he'd foisted on Medea- he had at least met and scanned a handful of other senshi, but still he'd never called them, messaged them, or anything else. He needed allies, a team, a partner, something. Something or what happened with that captain was going to repeat, and the next time he wasn't going to have the dumb luck to make it out alive.

It wasn't like there was a giant pin board somewhere with vacancies, benefits and wages listed. He had no idea who were on what teams, what the names where, what differentiated them- what was the point in different teams? He imagined ideology, as was the usual wont, and maybe the fact that smaller base structures allowed from more efficient maneuvering. But again...it seemed futile. Maia had been fairly clear, as had Athene, as was the primer- there was no leader. Nothing even in a general sense of a steward or communications relay.

A pang doubled him over, hands on knees, and he made it to a wall to lean against- he needed a break for a second. Maybe the cincher could just come off? It was embarrassing to only think of it months on, but he'd never actually tried to modify or fuss with his uniform other than to make annoyed, imperious, tired faces at it. He worked at the fastenings to see if he could viably loosen the stupid petal thing, or even just take it off entirely.

Another night, another non-patrol. Irene knew that she needed to stop, or at least talk to someone about it. Still, she never did. The rebellious part of her loved slipping past the rules, even though she knew that this rule had a very good reason for existing. That wasn't the real issue here, and on some level, she knew that as well.

For the first year of her tenure as a senshi, Irene had kept to her team. They looked out for her, showed her what to do, helped her learn how to take care of herself. She loved ********* and the Asteroids, and enjoyed spending time with them. But for a while, they had been her entire world. Sure, she knew from the Surrounding, and from meetings, that there were other senshi out there. She had just never had a reason to talk to them.

Now, she wanted to expand her borders. She needed to meet others, to find out what they did and why. That wasn't something she could easily do on a formal patrol, with one or more teammates along for the ride. Irene knew that they weren't all as interested in making connections as she was. Her walks home from work gave her the time she needed to think, and plan, and if she met someone, so much the better.

Unless said someone was hurt. Then it was very very bad.

"Are you alright?" Irene rushed over to a senshi who looked somewhat winded. "Were you injured? Do you need medical attention?" She looked around, trying to take in their surroundings. Her senshiphone probably couldn't call 911, and there was no pay phone around. Of course, she had a phone in her purse, but there was no way to access that without powering down. And if this person had just escaped a battle, that probably wasn't the best idea.

"Ease...I'm alright, " he hadn't expected another senshi out of the blue, and realised he'd been fairly well distracted. "If you could help...with these fastenings on the corset, I'd be obliged. "

"Its more than a month old. But fractures take at the very least 6 weeks the doctors said, and that just for fractures. I haven't helped with carrying on all this time. Broken ribs." He gave a smile to reassure the strange new girl, "Nothing out of the ordinary, right?"

"Who are you? I didn't feel you come up. Granted, that was my fault not being attentive. It's-, " just out of the blue helping some random senshi she saw? "Very generous. "

The other senshi’s words helped put Irene at ease, and she stopped trying to fumble for a phone that wasn’t there. Perhaps she needed to add a spare cell phone to her makeshift first-aid kit. One that couldn’t be traced back to her, of course. It was worth considering, but there were other things to worry about first.

“Let me see what I can do.” She pulled off her gloves before moving in closer, stuffing them into the purse at her side. Her experience with corsets was limited; it was a very bad idea for her to wear anything that might interfere with her breathing. Still, if this person was having trouble with it, she probably needed more dexterity than her gloved hands would have allowed. Her arms felt rather naked as she leaned in to try to pick at the fastenings indicated.

Speaking while she worked helped her focus, oddly enough. “I’m glad you’re alright. Though if you need anything, don’t let me hold you up. Would a painkiller help? I have a few in my purse.” Most of the items her kit contained were specific to her, like her inhaler and her epipen, but tucking a few over-the-counter remedies in had already proven to be a good idea. She looked up sharply when he announced that his ribs were broken, with an expression very close to pity. “I certainly hope that’s not a normal state of affairs!” During her time as a senshi, Irene had only needed emergency medical attention twice, and never for broken bones. The thought that such a thing could be routine to someone was somewhat disturbing.

“My name is Irene,” she offered as an introduction, still working at the bindings with her nails. “Super Sailor Irene, of Peace. I didn’t feel you either, until I saw you, and then it sort of all hit me at once.” Primarily white costume + aura = senshi, a simple calculation. She frowned as he went on, not liking where the conversation was going. “Shouldn’t we all help each other, regardless of whether we’ve been formally introduced or not? Are you saying that other senshi would have left you here, in distress? Or taken advantage of your distracted state?” Who had this person met, to be left with such an impression?

I assumed it was okay for her to approach him and pick at the laces/hooks/whatever- if you'd rather she not, lemme know and I'll edit!

"It would if you have them to spare," he wheezed a chuckle, then gave a relieved and shuddering breath as soon as the fastening was loosed. There didn't seen to be any vines regrowing it together, so at least the cinch could come off. Live and learn. "Super? Well...it's a pleasure now that I can think, Irene. "

"A bit mundane of a 'rescue' but I'm thankful. I'm Thraen, of Gardens."
"Ideally, I would hope we all would. That would require anyone being around, though, wouldn't it? It's a big city, and no regular organization or check in system. It isn't like a palace guard. No bobby whistles to echo in the night and call for help. And those phones are only helpful if you have someone scanned in to call and they chance to be near th e ohone and near enough to where you are to make it in time. "

"Not an ideal system, at least not so far as I've experienced." He motioned to her supply 'kit', "Not like that. That's a good idea. "

Irene gave a satisfied sigh as the bindings finally loosened, and took a couple of steps back to give the other senshi some air. "I replenish my kit as needed, so yes, I can spare them." Once she had felt that she didn't need to have her meds around all the time, but after being caught without them at a particularly bad time, she was much more careful. She reached into her purse, pulling out two small bottles which she offered to Thraen. "I'm allergic to aspirin," and to about a zillion other things, she thought dismally, "but I have ibuprofen and sodium naproxen. In my experience, the latter is more helpful."

His physical distress seemed to only be half the problem, though. Irene listened with a thoughtful expression as he explained his situation. "I take it, then, that you don't have a team. I wonder why there are so few, when there are such clear advantages?" She shrugged as she continued talking. "For a long time after I was awakened, I thought that everyone had a team. Because I had one from the beginning, and it never occurred to me that it might not be the same for everyone else." If only that were the case, this whole situation might have been averted. "Who taught you about being a senshi then, if not teammates? Do you have to patrol alone?"

Not for the first time, Irene was grateful to the Asteroids. Without them, she might not have made it to Super in one piece. Apparently the team(less) situation was far more dire than she'd first thought. Something would have to be done about that. Though she wasn't sure what just yet.

"As for my kit," she went on, "that was a matter of necessity. I was caught in a smokescreen without my inhaler once." Her hand went to her chest as she remembered how terrifying that had been. "I never want to let my personal health interfere again. It seemed obvious to add a couple of basic first aid supplies as well... but only after I could have used them. Still, if they've helped you, then it wasn't for nothing!" She smiled at that. Even if the actions she took came late, they could still help some people. She needed to remember that.

He accepted the suggestion of naproxen, retrieving two pills before offering the bottle back. He didn't need water or a drink to take them.

"No." The word was emphasized with a slow shake of his head, "I don't have a team. "
"I've heard of teams existing, only insofar as that they exist and the person I met was on them. I don't know the team names, or any of the other people on them, or what they stand for. I don't know why they are teams as opposed to just a part of the so-called White Moon Court, not that it is a court." He lifted his hand to rub the bridge of his nose as though he were wearing glasses, even though he wasn't. I sound more disillusion than is likely good for trying to be friendly.

"There's a primer on the phones that explains the bare bones of some of it, and I've had the good luck to be saved by a few others that happened on me by chance. Aegir gave me some pointers and helped me figure out my magic, Athene helped me learn how to scan others into my phone, Maia gave me a one-on-one crash course on how to punch, kick and dodge. That's been about it for classroom studies. The rest has been trial by fire."

"If you have a team, why are you out alone? "

Thraen's explanation reinforced Irene's conclusion that something needed to be done. It did not give her any ideas on what to do, though.

"I have no experience with any teams other than my own. ********* told me when she awakened me that she was looking for us, but I still don't know why we're the ones she was looking for. Oh, ********* our guardian cat. Including me, there are eight of us. Er, nine, actually." Sometimes it took her a moment to remember to add Psyche, who definitely hadn't been awakened normally. "They've been a great help to me. A little too great, maybe, if it took me this long to think about what others might be going through."

The mention of a phone primer made her think. She hadn't really noticed such a thing there, but she'd also never needed it. Whenever she'd had a question, ********* or Iris or someone else had been able to help. She made a mental note of the names he mentioned, smiling at bit when Maia came up. "Maia's a good teacher from what I've seen. I know she's held sparring practices before. They're helpful- if you like that sort of thing." And if you didn't turn into a maniac when you were fighting.

"I'm not patrolling," she said quickly in response to his question. Of course, that wasn't answering what he'd asked, but it was important to get that our first. "I always patrol with a partner, because that's the rule. But it's dangerous for a young lady to walk alone at night. This is somewhat safer."

This was true. It wasn't the main reason she liked to go on her nighttime strolls, but it was true.

"*********! Juven-"

"tas.."

It had started happy, then stuttered and failed. ********* organized a team of scouts, whenever it was. However it was. Eight-no-nine members.

Thraen closed his eyes, letting his bangs shroud them. "********* gave me my pen. Maybe half a year ago now. "

"I haven't seen her since." She never mentioned you. Any of you. Didn't mention a team. I'm not invited, not privy to the names of its members, nor a part of it. Some of us just left to the outside- 'fend for yourselves.' We're worth enough to be handed a gun and sent to die as bad as the Draft. When he opened his eyes again, they were clear and hard.

I know my worth. What will be will be, and what isn't I will make.
"I guess we aren't all so lucky. "

"I don't particularly like fighting, actually. It couldn't be further from what I do outside of this. How lucky to be on a team where you always have a partner at the least. My magic has nothing to do with fighting, really. " She was just powered to get home safetly? It was prudent in a way. "With all the Youma and Wraiths, and Agents out, I can understand just using the senses and speed to get home safe. And the mundane dangers, such as they are. "

" I could walk with you until you're a few blocks from your destination. Stopping a but a ways keeps your secrets intact. No need to tell me where, but I'm still willing to help an ally feel safe. Like Darzee's wife, I make a good decoy."

It was easy to see that somehow, she had said the wrong thing. It was harder to tell which thing had been wrong. His face had lit up when she mentioned *********, and then fallen... ah. Maybe that was it.

"I asked ********* why she was looking for us, specifically. She said that she doesn't know. I mean, Eunomia's sister's not even on our team, and that doesn't make sense to me at all. But I know that we're not the only ones that she cares about. There's only so much that she can do, considering the number of senshi out there. She told me that some guardians just stick to one senshi, and don't even help any others. I think that's one reason that teams don't get started so much: without guidance, it's hard to know what to do, and there aren't that many guardians." Aside from *********, Irene had only met one. And why were there so few? Unfortunately, that was another question that she wasn't going to get an answer to anytime soon.

Uttering a mental apology to *********, Irene stood a little straighter as she made her declaration. "I think it's time to stop depending on the guardians for everything. While we may need their help in some areas, organizing should not be one of them. If more people know about teams, they may be willing to take the initiative in making them. That's what I hope, anyway. And I want to do whatever I can to help."

That was the first time she'd announced that particular goal. It felt good, to know what she was aiming for and be forceful about it. So good that she couldn't help but fidget as she listened, and she giggled a little at his explanation. "I'm not really a fighter either," she admitted. It was easier to say that when someone wasn't criticizing her. "I mean, my magic isn't suited for it- which is natural, I suppose- but I also just don't like it. I can't help but feel that there must be a better way to settle things than through violence." There, that was another one of her big goals. She was being quite talkative that evening.

"I would appreciate the escort." Irene curtsied before starting to walk. "I think it's safe to tell you where I'm going, since I'm probably not the only senshi at Crystal Academy. But you needn't accompany me the whole way if you'd rather not. It's just nice to have the backup, just in case..."

She trailed off, thinking back to the last meeting. Even before it had been attacked, it hadn't been particularly pleasant. Nobody seemed to be listening to anybody else, and there was a great deal of arguing, and even outright shouting. Where was the kindness, the camaraderie? "It isn't hard, is it?" she asked abruptly. "To truly listen, or to offer a few moments of your time? Then why do so few people do it? And it must be very few, or you would not have been so surprised that I stopped to help. There is a problem here, and it goes much deeper than busy cats, or even a lack of organization."

It was right there, ready to be figured out. She just needed a little push.

The declaration was one coming from under the protective umbrella of the guardians, which made it maybe more ironically entertaining than otherwise should have been. Thraen's expression stayed stony. At least she was trying, and declaring an intention to try. "I haven't relied on the Guardians for anything yet, not even organizing, so I can't say I can relate. I know a few other scouts, equally teamless, and thankfully had the opportunity to scan them. It takes a few meetings to build up enough rapport though- suggesting a partnership or team on first meetings apparently is some sort of instinctual faux pax- scouts all seem a little hedgepig dilemma when it comes to the wisdom of groups in my experience. "

"Maybe it is the age range. Teens aren't known for their willingness to follow hierarchy structures, despite establishing them naturally in their little cliques. Having anyone on a team out there espousing the benefits of it and suggesting it to new scouts, whether they listen at first or no, is something. It's an admirable goal, Irene." He hoped that the recognition of the positive aspects would lessen the bitter earlier words. He didn't regret his feelings, but it could be misconstrued as bitterness at her, which it wasn't. In fact, short of our own human fallibility, I doubt there's anyone 'responsible'. Its just a bad situation.

He maneuvered the taken-off cincher over his forearm and shifted himself more proper-postured to fall into step with her as they walked. "It isn't hard, no. There's a lot of ego and uncertainty, if I was going to put my finger on it. Societal upbringing maybe? If taking the sociological evaluation. Americans are brought up to value independence and standing on ones own- maybe a lot of starting out scouts feel they have to 'earn their stripes' or prove themselves somehow worthy to some vague ideal before leaning on help would be okay. As for what the more experienced scouts are doing, and why they're hard to talk to? I don't know. They do feel unapproachable. I want to find and talk to some of the royals that supposedly exist myself, but then ...what can I say to them? Culpability is also a cruel thing, and neither myself nor most of the others could know the situations of the older senshi. Accusing them of not being better leaders without having an idea and proof of what they ARE spending their time doing ....I don't think it is the way to go about it. Not yet, anyway. "

"There does need to be leadership, though. "

"Strong leadership. And stiff necks need to bend and realize that sometimes having a direction or answer of some sort, even if it isn't the 'best answer' is better than no one acting at all. There isn't time on the battlefield for democracy and voting. And no one has set up any stewardship for the 'White Moon Court' to determine 'policy' by Democratic vote if that was what was wanted anyway. "

"Do you know the existing teams? Could a council be set up with a representative of each? Or would you be in a position to find them out? "

“Maybe you’re better off for it,” Irene mused aloud. “It took me more than a year to even realize that not everyone was taken care of, the way that I was. My support network, while wonderful, is very small. And I’ve been so dependant on my team that when I have to fight alone, I struggle.” The fight at Maize Maizier still bothered her. The restaurant had suffered so much damage, partly because she hadn’t been able to chase the youma out quickly enough, partly because she wasn’t experienced at teaming up with people she didn’t know. Both of those things needed to change.

She shrugged off his praise, though she was privately pleased. “Right now, it’s just a goal. I’m not even sure how to go about it, other than speaking to people I meet when I walk home, just like this. My experience is limited, but most of the senshi I’ve met have been older than me, with a few notable exceptions.” Columba came immediately to mind, as well as the chibis on her team. “So I’m not sure it’s fair to blame this issue on age. Honestly, if we’re old enough to be trusted with the safety of ourselves and others, we should be old enough to handle ourselves in a mature way. And that means listening to others, even when we don’t agree with them.

It didn’t necessarily mean hunting down people from the opposite side to listen to them, but that wasn’t something Irene wanted to reveal just yet. One issue at a time. Besides, he was taking her seriously, and he might not if he knew she did something so risky.

“Not all senshi are American, though I’m sure that the majority are.” The fact that he was talking about this from a sociological point of view made Irene buzz with excitement, but she tried to keep it in check. “It is a good point, though. I wonder if senshi from a more community-oriented society- Japan, for example- would be better at working together for the good of all involved. Which makes me wonder, why are the senshi so concentrated here? Unless the thing that makes us senshi was an external force, it doesn’t make any sense for there not to be others around the world. I think that they make their way here, but I don’t know for sure. And if they do, why? What’s so special about Destiny City?”

Irene turned a corner, taking it slow so that she could talk without getting out of breath. “I’m afraid I don’t know much about politics, but what you’re saying makes sense. As for the rest… if you want to meet an older senshi, I could arrange for you to meet Iris. I don’t know of anyone who’s been a senshi for longer than she has, but then, I don’t know that many senshi.” The fact that Iris was a royal made it even more ideal, but Irene didn’t want to spread that around too much. Not that people didn’t know, but it was Iris’ identity, not hers. “She’s a bit, er… rough around the edges, let’s say. But if you can get past that, she’s very helpful.” Irene didn’t always agree with Iris’ methods, but couldn’t argue with the results.

How to go about it indeed...

He liked problem solving, in a way, because it involved coming up with a lot of ideas. Thraen, and Quenton, loved learning and ideas best of all. It didn't really sound like she was soliciting advice on how to go about it, just making conversation, so he'd need to be careful about how he presented his thoughts on the matter to not seem ...bossy or like he was trying to tell her what to do. All the more because he had about as much clue as anyone else what woudl even have a chance of success. He had a feeling she'd met more than he had, to get an idea of what the sailor culture as a whole was like. "There's the phones for a start? Every senshi has one, so why waste the time footwork chasing everyone down door to door when you could call them up? I mean, obviously none of us know ever single other, but pyramid system-ing organization to get a meeting or a start is an idea. You call everyone you know, they call everyone they know, and so forth, and seven-degrees from Kevin Bacon later all the scouts there are might have a clue about someone trying to arrange something."

"And what about the cats? Do they know who made the phones? If there were a way to do something like the old TV emergency broadcast system and tap every phone out there, that could be faster go after the investment of making one."

After that...? "It seems like a meeting of team leaders and those willing to come would be a good investment of setting up policy and establishing the Moon Court for real. Or whatever we all want to call it. We all are so bloody visible and make torches of ourselves with that...spidey sense. Is there any way to dampen that? Or if everyone could get to someone's planet or asteroid over the course of a few trips. Or the Moon, however one even gets there. The Primer doesn't say. "

Once they turned the corner he brightened a bit, "I'd love to meet this Iris, if you'd be willing to arrange it. I probably have nothing but dumb questions she's sick of answering, but its better to ask and be dumb for a day than not to ask and be dumb for a lifetime. I'm not worried if she's rough. We all have our quirks, so if she can put up with me, I can certainly have the graces to deal with her. "

"Could we ....trade scanning each other, so that we can get a hold of each other easier?" He wondered if it was offensive to ask. Athene had offered it when he'd taught him, and it seemed like something that was possibly gauche- like asking what prices were for things in a restaurant that didn't have them on the menu.

The ideas weren't bad, far from it. But Irene felt that they needed some work. "I've attended a meeting before. It was... less than successful. Nobody really listened to anybody else." And then Chaos came and wrecked everything, but at least it had ended the arguing. "I agree that there needs to be a dialogue, but too many people were refusing to listen to other opinions. Would it be better to start with smaller groups? It seems counter-intuitive to meet several times to discuss the same thing, but limiting the size would give each person a chance to speak- provided that everyone else promises to listen. And smaller gatherings would be easier to keep under wraps." Even if things went well, if Chaos intruded again, nobody would ever want to meet.

The cats were a good idea, but after what she had just said, she wasn't sure she wanted to go running to ********* for this. As for setting up the Moon Court... why? "I'm not sure that clinging to an ancient form of government is the way to handle this," she said slowly. "It's possible, of course, but how would that benefit us more than any other form of organization?" And why did they want to form a court swearing allegiance to someone who wasn't even there?

"Cats can dampen energy signals, but only to a certain degree, I think. I like the space idea, but that would enforce small groups as well. Unless someone has enough energy to make several trips." If anyone did, it would probably be Iris. Irene would have to have a chat with her captain about this. She was wondering how to bring the subject up when Thraen made his suggestion. "Oh, I'd be delighted! Regardless of in-person meetings, I think you're right in that they start with individual connections, just like these."

With that, she took out her phone and held it in front of her. This was fantastic! Even though their ideas differed a bit, she was thrilled to have met someone who was enthusiastic about getting people to work together. It was sort of a disappointment when the Crystal Academy campus came into view.

A meeting gone awry before. When did it happen? Who was there? We don't even have a roster of our own kind to know and send searches for our own. To know whom to hold vigil for.

Arguing the benefit of a monarchy was pointless when he himself didn't know a great deal about differing forms of governance. He was an artist, not a politician. Seeking to unify the senshi in any method or fashion may require them, and it was a good point- he would need to read a lot about a lot if he was going to have any hope of answering difficult questions.

"I'd love to meet with you again...Don't hesitate to call if you ever have want or need. Or even just casually. I have a lot to learn, and I'd appreciate being able to ask you about all the things you know- the meetings you've seen and the senshi you know. Consolidation and sharing of information. " Thraen shifted, flatting one of his hands on his ribs, "And thank you. For the help."
