Dana- or rather, Columba- had a break. Without a working pen, she wouldn't have to deal with the secret goings-on in Destiny City. Hopefully. Probably. The world would surely leave her alone long enough to find the information she needed. In the meantime, she could take some time to process everything, to get her head in the game.

Aquarius had no break, no energy to spare for processing. With new senshi constantly being awakened, to do the job she had abandoned for so long, she had to make up for lost time. The longer she let the Negaverse run around, doing whatever they liked, the more people would end up hurt. Likewise, the longer she struggled with translating the works in her library, the longer they would all have to live without whatever information it contained. Surely the Aquarius of yore hadn't sat up in the Surrounding doing nothing for years on end. There had to be data that she could use, or experiments she could try. Anything that might bring the fighting to a speedier close.

Her nighttime jaunts became more frequent, and she was more willing to call them patrols. They didn't have any pattern to them; one night would find her in the park, the next, she was over by the DCU campus. She stopped on the roof of one of the lecture halls, dropping her messenger bag as she crouched down, her breathing labored. There had only been one youma, and it had been weak. It hadn't taken her long to dispatch it. So why was she so tired already? And why was she still shaking?

"You've been lazy," she scolded herself. "You were never a book-bound idiot before. When did you let that happen?" The old Aquarius was fit and confident and could handle anything that life threw at her. The new one was a joke, but at least there wasn't anyone around to see.

Just then, an aura flared to life on Aquarius' mental radar, and she groaned. "Now? Really?" Judging by the feel, it was a fairly new senshi or knight. Not necessarily someone who had been into space yet. But she wasn't about to write off a potential source of information so easily. She stood again, legs protesting as she stretched them, and slung her messenger bag over her shoulder as she waited. Would this presence come to her, or would she have to chase after it, huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf?

Considering how often he patrolled and how few other senshi or enemies he'd met in the greater scheme of ratios and chance, Thraen was surprised and initially alarmed when on first henshin-ing he felt a power signature on campus. His gut reaction wasn't one of trying to decipher whether it was order or chaos, just that it was there. After the initial panic faded, and his brain had engaged to be attentive, it was more puzzling than alarming.

What sort of feel WAS that? It wasn't Maia, that was certain. It didn't feel as bright a beacon, yet was stronger than his own. But different. He'd never felt anything like it. Is there a category missing, or that I've forgotten from the primer? Either is likely, I suppose

It didn't feel like it was moving, so Thraen opened his eyes and immediately darted to investigate. It was something or someone worth knowing- strange and different. He slowed when he started nearing where it felt the strongest, near one of the quads and nestled among the lecture halls there. He stood on the quad, looking around for evidence of the nexus of the signature. He hated how imprecise the 'sense' could be- maybe it got better with more experience. Maybe Maia and Athene could practically play hide and seek with it.

Well, nothing like old fashioned brute forcing it- "Marco?"

"Marco?" Aquarius repeated, mostly to herself. Was someone lost? Someone named Marco, she assumed? It took a moment for the puzzle piece to click into place, but when it did, she burst out laughing. "Brilliant! Totally brilliant!"

Most of the people she'd talked to lately had found her. She'd never questioned it too much; other senshi probably used rooftops for travel as well, or she was just really easy to spot up there. This voice sounded like it came from the ground level. Someone who didn't like heights, or didn't need them, perhaps. Or it was a normal person who was about to get scared out of their wits by the appearance of a terrorist. That was a solid possibility, but it didn't stop Aquarius from doing what she decided to do.

Jogging along the roof, she stopped right at the edge, overlooking an open space- a quad, she remembered- and put her hands around her mouth. "Polo!" she shouted, then started to giggle uncontrollably again. This was the silliest thing she'd done as a senshi in a long while, and it was really kind of fun.

Hearing the emphatic answer, Thraen shifted into a fox-like trot as he followed over the grass in the general direction of the sound. Given that much, and the fact that the source was silhouetted clearly from a height against the sky, he came to the base of the correct building. Looking up the columns and the neoclassical exterior at the stars and underlit-grotesque medallion faces, the white of the shoulders and arms on her fuku, and the aqua wrap, were a more confidence building site than the dark cowl and pantaloons would initially lead him to believe.

He called up, not willing to trust wholly to chance a stranger with so little white present- and so strange an aura. But the stranger was plainly some time in childhood a member of Earth to recognize the game. And the peal of giggles sounded reassuring and pleasant as water on river stones. "I guess building tops aren't 'fish out of water' when we can all jump so high. "

"I haven't felt or seen anyone like you around the University before. "

Well, there was someone. Someone who looked vaguely like a senshi- they had a white fuku, at least- but it was hard to tell from that distance. And they didn’t come to her, instead opting to shout from below. For a brief moment, Aquarius felt like Juliet on her terrace. It was, she decided, quite odd.

So, instead of waiting, she leaped off the edge of the roof. The lecture hall was pretty short, so she was able to stick the landing with only minor wobbles. The last time she’d tried a trick like that, she’d wrenched her ankle and had been limping for days. The fact that she was capable of even minor improvement in her performance was somewhat reassuring.

“We can also jump down,” she announced once she’d made sure she landed safely. “I take it you’re sorta new at this. Congratulations on making it this far without getting yourself killed.” Quite an icebreaker, that. Aquarius seemed to realize that she’d possibly gone too far, and shrugged as a sort of half apology. “Don’t mind me, I’m…” There was no good way to end that sentence, so she quickly changed the topic. “Hey, can I get you to look at something for me? A research project I’m working on?”

"Sort of, " Thraen inclined his head to the woman. Whether to being new or to the congratulations on not getting himself killed he didn't qualify. "Usually an introduction would be first. Admittedly, I haven't felt anyone like you ever. I'd like to know about that before anything else. You feel clean..."

"So you're not an agent or from the mirror. But you're certainly different. Radiant. " The last part slipped out, a personal musing. But he didn't stumble over it, or retract it. There wasn't really a need to- it was true enough with a cowl like the night sky over hair as dark a fall unstudded with stars but glossy. Simpler, more elegant than his own riot of flowers. The draping would make a nice study is alabaster. "I'm Thraen, of Gardens. "

"Is this research nearby? Or?" Easy enough to whip out a tablet with clod capabilities in their day and age, but it was a University, with many labs and private research quarters for grad students and professors. She could be any of the above or none as much as he was a student himself.

Aquarius blinked once. Twice. Then, very slowly, she raised her left arm, leading with the elbow, and turned her head. Sniff, sniff. She recoiled slightly at what she smelled, then shrugged. "Okay, I could probably use a shower. But what's the point of doing that before going monster hunting? I'll just get all sweaty again and-"

All at once, the real meaning of that statement hit her, and she guffawed again. "Oh, you meant- I get it." Interesting way of putting it, but she wasn't about to argue semantics. "No chaos here, don't worry. I don't think they'd be interested in converting me anyway. They prefer using lethal force." As quickly as she'd started laughing, she stopped, her expression downcast. This still wasn't something she could joke about.

"Sailor Aquarius, of Science. My story's long and not very interesting," and she was sick of retelling it, "but the short version is that the Guard uses a different scaling system, I guess. Beats the hell out of me why." What made Zodiacs different from regular senshi? Aside from the fact that they served Chronos and had effectively been banished to the Surrounding in the past. Other senshi had to serve princesses too. As for the latter reason, maybe being out in the middle of nowhere stunted their growth?

Oh, who really cared about that?

Since this Thraen guy seemed potentially interested, Aquarius reached into her bag, pulling out a notebook that looked like it had seen better days. "It's very nearby, in fact. This is- well, let's start with the basics. You been to space yet?" If not, it was unlikely that he'd be able to help, but when it came to senshi, you never knew.

Romanticized artist notions about elegance and beauty were thrown promptly out the window with the bathwater and Thraen laughed. Nothing like sniffing armpits to disabuse grace and femininity- replaced with post modernism and loosened corsets. There was no ivory tower here, and she was most probably just a young woman like him. In school or working some regular job, buying razors and ensure at the pharmacy and looking through the paper for coupons to favorite quick meals.

'The Guard' sounded impressive, but she seemed eager to gloss it over. Maybe she was often asked about it if her career as a scout was as long as she intoned. It was information to be learned through friendship and exposure over time, which wasn't something immediately available on first encounters. He let her keep her piece, and didn't question that aspect further, nor the aspect of Science. It sounded a more interesting and useful sort of thing than gardens, but also like it should be impossible- magic of science? Wasn't that an oxymoron?

"It's a pleasure, then." He walked over to conversational distance, that of a handshake, tilting his head quizzically at her notebook. "I have? I've been to my asteroid once. No others. "

"Does it matter for something?"

Aha, a possible resource! Aquarius brightened and immediately set to digging through her bag, extracting first a flashlight, then a magnifying glass, both of which she put back before continuing to rummage. “It does matter, actually,” she explained, this time pulling out a Swiss Army Knife, which she scowled at before putting it back. “It’s not exactly my field, but my search for knowledge has led me into linguistics. Specifically, space linguistics. If we can translate the things we find in space, we can know what they know, and get that much further ahead.”

It sounded so ideal. Which meant nothing if she remained stuck, but hey, that was why she had brought it up.

“I have a compilation of all the characters I’ve found so far.” Which was not the bag of Oreos she had grabbed this time. She crammed it back in, reaching deeper down, and finally pulled out a battered composition notebook. “So far, I’ve uncovered what I suspect are several distinct languages, including what one senshi identified as the common language, though I haven’t been able to confirm that yet. But there’s still a number of alphabets that I haven’t been able to isolate. And I haven’t been able to translate a thing yet.”

Patience was key, but after working on this for over a year, it would be nice to make some progress on the translation front. Aquarius sighed and offered the notebook to Thraen. “Wanna take a look? If anything looks even vaguely familiar, either from an artifact you saw there, or a vision you had, it could be a big clue.”

Ivynian

"Linguistics..." Which was fascinating to him. And it was a good idea- having a better idea of history would answer questions about what happened to all their home-worlds, what the war may have been like before and what their enemies had brought to bear on them then (and may again), and what tactics catastrophically failed the first time. It could also help, perhaps, with the rediscovery of technology that they were missing of could be helpful.

And honestly, at its most basic, he wanted to know about the people and cultures. Faced with a mystery, anyone with an empathetic bone in their body would feel it- the hesitant, wistful, sad want of knowing who those people had been that had built such wonders so far away. Infinitely further than the ruins and tragedy of Pompeii, but mirroring it in conundrum and richness.

"So really, you're kind of looking for a latchkey like the Rosetta Stone- something with enough of a sample that you can start comparisons and finding frequency of glyphs....figuring out what is phonetic or not? I'd love to have a look." He was briefly siezed by the want of an Oreo. She just carried them around? THAT WAS SUCH A GOOD IDEA. But he kept his peace and just gave a wistful sigh as they were put securely and safely away again.

"There's a ruin of ...it might be a conservatory? It's fairly central on my asteroid, among gardens that seem to wrap the rest of the small surface of the place. I haven't navigated to it yet, but there's enough stone-work around that there's a good chance maybe I'll find plaques, steles, or such things on walls or statuary or on the flagging. Gardens are commonly places people put things like that- writing on stone or metal that is likely to last. So maybe nothing huge or multilingual, but I'll keep an eye out."

"I spent most of my time there trying to find the path to the place out of the hedgemaze of arrival. So there's sculpted English-style gardens. There were bridges in the distance and what looked to have once been waterways. So there are probably other sorts of designs, too."

"Visions?"

Aquarius' eyes widened. Finally, someone who got it!

"Exactly. That's it in a nutshell. But so far, nothing. All I've been able to do is narrow down which letters belong together, by combing through the books and writing down the characters I find. It's difficult, since there are some symbols that only occur in some books with other partial alphabets, and I can't tell if they're foreign or code or just came into usage later. And many of the languages don't use spaces, so finding what constitutes a word is even more difficult. I know I should look for patterns, but there's just so much volume..." And despite her enthusiasm, this wasn't a project that she could claim to enjoy. Most of it was really really boring.

If she could get other people to split the work with, though, then maybe she could make more progress. This guy seemed keen on taking a look. Pharos had expressed an interest as well. And of course there was Zia. "Maybe I can organize a field trip," she thought aloud, tapping her bag lightly. "Set aside a day to get a chunk of recording and comparing done. Hey, d'you have a Surrounding pass? That would probably make things easier." If he'd been to space, maybe he'd been around for that ordeal. There had been so many senshi and knights there that she'd never even tried to remember them all.

Speaking of field trips, going to this guy's place sounded like fun too. "Are there still plants there? Even if they're not alive, I'd love to get some samples. There are slides up at the Outpost, and instruments too, not that I know how to use them. But judging from how they're laid out, I'm guessing that at least some of them are for studying biology. Imagine, getting to look at a space plant! What kind of cell structure it might have, what food it might need. Maybe it's even possible to make something grow again, after all these years!" That was way more interesting than looking at a bunch of dusty books!

"Visions. Ah, guess you haven't had any." Aquarius shrugged. "I haven't either, but I heard that normal senshi see snippets of their past life when they visit up there." Which sounded kind of creepy, honestly. It was almost a relief not to have to deal with the past coming back to haunt her, even if that meant she couldn't glean any clues from it.

"Making use of computer power, and not just manpower, would be a big help in something like this. You'd have to do the work, or have someone do the work, of scanning photos or pieces, cropping and formatting, or photo-enhancing, but then once everything was setup you could run diagnostics that would compare and record basic pattern recognitions and usage frequencies, keyword densities, unique character numbers, average line lengths...things like that. "

"Scriptio continua? You know, that's a bit of breakthrough as it is- if you know that some cultures used it, you know that they used reading only for recording, really. It meant that they memorized and rehearsed their decrees, and instead read from manuscript like a musician reads from music. "
"That's more of a cultural revelation, though, than anything that really helps with translations. That really does make it a step harder, without even interpuncts. Pattern recognition becomes more important then. I'd be willing to help as much as I'm able. I love languages. Actually...I just like learning."

"If you organize a group effort, and are willing to have me on, I'm willing to pack a bedroll and some s'mores. Or whatever. I don't mean to be flippant at all, its fascinating."

Simply. Fascinating.

"What is a Surrounding?" She said it like a proper noun, which meant something very different than the negative space that just happened to be surrounding them and everything else that was a Something and not a Nothing. "Oh, on Thraen? What I saw still had plants of a kind. There may be seeds or living plants somewhere, I haven't explored everything by far. So far everything I saw looked to be wholesale petrified. Which is....a strange effect. That process usually requires a dry climate, but its plane that there is water somewhere and I haven't found it or was back when they were growing and planting things. There's also the flood-type petrification- like the bog mummies. You know, " he tapped his chin, "I hadn't thought of that one before. Maybe everything was flooded and minerals replaced the regular structures. Drowning a world though...."

"But we cast magic, so anything is possible, I guess. Why rely on only Earth science to explain the fact that I'm wearing living plants and we all hang out with puss in boots."

“I had considered something like that,” Aquarius said, sounding a bit offended. She wasn’t an idiot! At least, not about everything. “But there aren’t exactly any outlets up there, and my computer’s a desktop.” She had considered “borrowing” Kent’s once or twice, but he was already way too suspicious of her. Even if she kept all her files on a flash drive, he’d probably know how to figure out what she was doing. So that wasn’t an option. “I’d have to encode my handwritten notes, and so far, it’s been more effective to spend that time doing more legwork. Because there’s a ton of legwork to do, and so far it’s pretty much been just me.”

But maybe that would change. Zia had been looking into things with her contacts. Other people had pointed her in useful directions. And this guy seemed to know way more about language than she did. Aquarius’ eyes glazed over slightly as he talked, trying to make sense out of what he was saying. Then she snapped back into the present and nodded. “Oh, I love learning too. This just really isn’t my field- but it seems to be yours, huh?”

How lucky could she get, coming across someone like this? It totally made up for wasting her time with Sir Jerk-a-Lot.

If he didn’t know what the Surrounding was, though, then he’d probably never been. Bummer. “The Surrounding is a… well, it’s basically a barrier. One that ‘surrounds’ the solar system, which I guess is why it’s called that. I’m responsible for part of it, and that’s where I’ve found all of these samples. It’s nowhere near as interesting as a petrified forest, though! It’s a shame you haven’t found anything organic, though I’d still love to see it sometime.”

At Thraen’s last comment, she leaned in close. Very close. “Is your fuku alive? Seriously? Oh man, can I take a little of it? Would if disappear when you powered down? Have you ever tried to plant it?” She spat out her questions rapidly, and was still thinking of more. This was quite possibly the coolest thing she’d seen since becoming a senshi.

Thraen lifted a hand, in submission, "Just talking, thinking out loud. I didn't intend any implications about your research habits. I'm sure they're sound. Loquacious, bad habit."

"I don't know that I'd say languages are my field- they are a field that I have a lot of interest in. I've only got two down so far. I've heard that it gets a lot easier after the seventh, but I haven't had enough time to get that far yet. Well, maybe some people consider music a language, which it is, but it isn't...quite the same. That's a debate for other times. "

He leaned when she did, making an uncertain face, "I.....yeeeeeees, they're alive alright. The flowers and vines. I haven't scraped at the bark boots to figure out if its greenwood or not. I think it is though. "

He pulled a flower out of his hair, vine still somewhat attached a bit to the small bit and offered it out, "It probably will disappear once I power down. But you're welcome to look at it. I've not tried planting any of the uniform bits, actually. But my magic has enough with planting...it hadn't really come up? I make flowers grow out of seeds that I apparently pull out of hammerspace. If I had some flying monkeys, I could steal ruby shoes for all the good the things do me. They don't last long. "

"Do you summon a decanter of water? I'm actually surprised with a name like Aquarius you aren't a guy. The old myth is based on Ganymede and Zeus, isn't it? Eramenos and Erastes, and all that business. I guess that could practically be a game all itself, guessing what magic goes with what names. Oh, but you said you were of Science. "

Science and...wine-waterer? He wasn't sure how that recombined. "Pour the waters fo science to the cups of willing."

"Enlightening." He said it perky, like he enjoyed the waterfall from idea to idea and word to word.

And just like that, Aquarius was mollified. "Nah, it's all good. I wouldn't mind getting a computer up there sometime, but resources being what they are... well, it'll happen when it happens." In the meantime, she was making good progress on her own. Sort of.

When Thraen spoke of his experience with language, her eyes widened and her jaw slowly dropped. "You want to learn seven languages? Wow, that's intense! I could barely handle high school Spanish. Never thought about music as a language, but why not? If you can write it or speak it, and it means something, doesn't it quality?" That was an interesting direction to go in. She flipped to the back of her notebook, unclipped a pen that was dangling from the strap of her bag, and jotted down a quick note so she could look into it more later.

"Hmmmm... well, that's disappointing. If they'll vanish, that limits my ability to study them." Because she definitely wanted to study magic vines. And magic seeds, and flowers, whatever she could get her hands on! She took the flower he offered her, holding it carefully as she examined its petals and stem. "Could I take a rain check on that, maybe? I'll need time to get things together- microscope, chemicals, you know- so I can make the most out of the opportunity. Oh, but can I keep this for now? Just to see if it does disappear when you go back to you, like a control specimen."

The mention of gender made her start cackling again. "Actually, I was a guy. But that's ancient history- literally, if you catch my drift." Her memories of the past were a mess, jumbled and full of holes, but it would be hard for her to forget something like that. "Not that I have any clue how the Cauldron decides these things. My magic's got nothing to do with water at all. I just get to mess around with the laws of physics. Nothing special." The hell it wasn't. Aquarius hated most things about being a senshi, but she loved using her magic.

"I do like that image, though," she added. "Makes me feel important, not like a pawn in some stupid intergalactic chess game."

Apparently, when she'd died, she had lost the ability to stay positive for longer than a few minutes at a time. Aquarius grimaced, shrugged, and offered an apologetic glance. She didn't trust herself to speak just yet, in case she said something else awkward and depressing.
