Another article analyzing skyscrapers in New York literature, another day Ruthie spent slipping into half-sleep. She felt so exhausted lately. Between Buddy fighting for her and youma and art showings, she could barely keep her eyes open. Mostly she wanted to watch self-hypnosis videos about finding true love or open twenty fortune cookies to discover her fate, but unfortunately, she sat, the sunlight warming her to sleep, as she tried so very hard concentrate on the pretentious article probably tossed together in the last hour by some tired professor.
If only something could wake her u--
She sat up right. A scratching at her door? A smile sprawled across her face.
IT WAS HIM. Oh how she adored her precious companion! She zipped to the door and opened it wide.
"THETIIIIIIS!"

Thetis had practically crawled here. You didn't want to know how he even got into the secure building. YOU DID NOT WANT TO KNOW. Thetis wished he could have erased that memory out of his mind. Whatever he did, by the time he got to the door of Ruthie's apartment and began to scratch at it to notify her it was apparent he was sore and tired. Before she could open the door the small guardian cat collapsed there, wallowing in his own self pity.
He was filthy and he smelled like melon.

Ruthie gasped! No! Thetis was dying! No no no! She picked up the small precious gem of cat and held him tightly, shutting the door with her heel. "Thetis no! What's wrong, my dear?" He smelled faintly of watermelon. "Why do you smell like noms?"
She brought him to the sofa and gently set him down, scratching behind his ear.
"Are you okay?"
She wanted him to be okay so badly, but he seemed so sad. Her eyes grew soft with worry.

Thetis remained silence until the two of them were in the apartment with the door closed. Only then did the small guardian cat reply to her questions. It was better that way, safer that way. Who knew who lived next door or who was listening down the hall? It could be a Negaverse agent, a Dark Mirror senshi or a numerous unknown evils of the world. First and foremost he couldn't endanger Ruthie with his visit. How could she love him anymore if all he did was bring trouble?
"Terrible things happened Ruthie! Absolutely horrifying things happened! Things like you would never believe! I... I am all sticky and there is dirt stuck to my fur. It is horrible. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE. I can't believe I am still alive..." He said, his voice dwindling as his sentence finished.
His eyes couldn't help but look at the sofa that Ruthie set him on, his paws lifting up one by one with horror. He was so dirty. It wasn't just watermelon that covered him anymore but dirt and grass too. A lot of it was caught up in his matted curls, unable to simply shake out. Not only was he utterly ruined but he was going to get everything dirty! His eyes darted from the sofa to Ruthie and then back to the sofa.
"Would you give me a bath please? I don't want to tarnish everything."

Ruthie frowned. Who would attack her precious friend? Would she have to...? She gulped. The last time she attacked an agent out of vengeance it didn't end well...But she didn't have back up exactly. This time she would bring friends. What kind of terrible agent of darkness would harm Thetis? Why? He only wanted to help others! She brought Thetis into her arms and carried him to the bathtub--porcelain, clean, a still life of sunflowers hanging over the cushioned toilet.
Sometimes the seat was too cold.
It was bothersome, okay?
She turned on the water, letting it run warm for a minute.
"Who did this to you?" she mumbled. "Also do you mind smelling like strawberries? That's all the bath products I have right now."
She bit her lip.
"Should I avenge you?"
She would. It made her nervous, but she totally would.

Ruthie's arms were quite comforting, and a night like the one he had being in them brought a small purr from the guardian cat. Despite how nice it felt, the guardian cat still wished it was another girl carrying him. It felt like she would never love him the way he loved her. Sometimes he wandered over to Ellie's place just to peek through the window and look at her. Sometimes she didn't do a lot but she was getting out more often than she used to. If she was capable of change then perhaps one day her heart would change too? Hope, ridiculous amounts of hope kept the small cat going.
"Master of the Devil Fruit," he whispered softly. It certainly wasn't the first person to attack him but he didn't dare tell her about Wolframite. His expression obviously said he was hiding something else but he looked away from her out of guilt. How could he lie to her? He whined softly.
"Strawberries taste great on shortcake!" He replied with gusto, using it to hide the truth. It wasn't what he wanted to say. No, part of him wanted to get Medea to avenge him.

"Hmm." What was Thetis hiding? "Devil Fruit, you say?" She turned off the water. "What's that?" She picked him up. "I'm going to set you gently in the water now. It will feel soft as a whisper. Promise."
She gently eased him in gentle as palm trees swaying in the wind as clouds softly gently floating the in gentle sky. Gentle. She poured a bit of soap onto her palm.
"Thetis, you know you can trust me right?" She wet her hands in the bathwater and started at his crown. "If you ever wanted me to find someone for you, I could pull it off, you know. I won't get hurt."
What a terrible, terrible lie by a ridiculously horrid liar.
"I'm pretty strong, you know. I held my own against a bike youma and its captain." He let her go because she mentioned Zee. "I promise I won't let you down, okay?"

Thetis was one of those cats that actually liked water. However, don't get confused. He liked tap water. He absolutely did not like rain. Rain was horrible. It was like the sky was attacking him from above. He absolutely did not like the rain. The sky would totally attack him and that's why he hid under the bed when it rained so the sky wouldn't find him. The bath was nice though and Thetis didn't struggle at all. He sat there in it until his paw began to bat at the water playfully.
He was washing his paws yo. Scrub a dub dub yo paws in the tub.
His ears twitched as she began to scrub his head.
"It's not important. I don't want you to go looking for trouble!"
Mmm Ruthie, that was the spot. Thetis was purring like thunder.

She laughed. "But Thetis--" She moved to the shoulders. "--Trouble finds me!" She shrugged. "Might as well beat it to the chase."
Thankfully Thetis seemed to enjoy the water. He constantly surprised her with his favorite things. Baking, and now water. Interesting. She really couldn't predict his actions.
Not yet.
One day she would, and she wouldn't have any questions about what he hid from her. She smiled. At least he seemed happy.

Thetis lowered his head as she went to his shoulders, a logical movement, although he also seemed to be avoiding Ruthie's eyes.
"You should hide better. I can show you some of my spots."
It sounded like a joke but he was totally serious and totally deadpan.

Ruthie lowered herself so her gaze just barely hovered over the rim of the tub. "Liiike here?" She popped below the edge. He couldn't see her! Poof! Vanished. "Orrrr here?!" She scurried behind the bathroom door. She chuckled. "Can't see me now, can you?! Is this how you hide, my dear?" She returned to the tub. "Do you smell of strawberries now?"
She loved strawberry smell as much as roses. They seemed so fresh.
"Seriously, though. I'll be okay." She nodded. "You haven't seen me yet, but I'm a fantastic fighter! Super OP! Baddies never stand a chance!"

Baddies didn't stand a chance and neither did poor Thetis. He realy couldn't see her so when she suddenly popped out the cat jumped up into the air, landing back into the tub with a splash. He breathed heavily, calming himself down with deep, deep breaths. Everything was fine, she was just out of sight, out of mind! It wasn't like she had disappeared there for a moment.
"I smell like strawberry shortcake," he said, licking his face.
Seriously though, Thetis didn't even answer your last sentence with words. Nothing was ever okay. Nothing. Ever.

She chuckled. Ah Thetis. What would she do without him? She lifted him outside the tub and wrapped him in a bright yellow towel. Hopefully he wouldn't feel too cold. She hated how stepping onto the tile brought shivers up her back. She said, "Now. Come nom and watch silly TV shows and talk about life with me?"
She led the way to the sofa and put on Billionaire Bachelor.
They eliminated the astronaut.
Shame.

Thetis buried himself into the towel like a gopher, trying to push him and the towel closer into Ruthie's chest. He wanted to feel her and her glorious love as she held him. Motions blurred into one and before Thetis even knew it the two of them were on the sofa. Thetis wasn't used to television shows other than children shows so rather curiously he peeked out of the towel toward the television.

Ah yes, Billionaire Bachelor, she lowered the volume. Maybe she could be on there one day! Of course! She could win the heart of someone in a totally-not-contrived-100%-real showmance set in the Parisian hills, and she could drink red wine in a red dress and sit under the moonlight.
Yesss.
Thetis felt like a warm little raincloud--something she wanted to protect. Hopefully she could save him from the evil likes of Chaos! No one would hurt him ever! She leaned forward to give him an upside-down smile.
"I bought some tuna yesterday. I thought you might like it. Interested?"
