There was only so much Alaska could do on an island with minimal power. She couldn’t use what little electronics she had because there was no way to charge them. Little conveniences that she often took for granted were not always there, causing the raven-haired woman to huff before heading out of her dorm with a bright orange basketball in her arms. Having failed to find a hoop or basketball court to play in, she opted to make a temporary hoop out of branches from a nearby tree.

She tentatively bounced the ball against the ground. Her nose crinkled when tiny clouds of dust scattered, but oh well. It was an island, not a city. The raven-haired woman weaved the ball between her legs a couple times before throwing it into the makeshift basket and amazingly the branches didn’t clatter to the ground. Alaska let the ball bounce a couple times before finally walking to pick it up.

Owain was nattering on about plants today. He wanted Jack to get samples of this and that and my word, what were those, and perhaps he could procure these seeds, and oh dear careful with that specimen! Eventually Jack got fed up midway into digging in the ground to uproot some "interesting weeds" and made the executive decision of <******** this noise.

Sweaty, strained, and with a light smear of dirt on his arms and nose, he was carrying his tools back when he heard it. Bum bum bum. Turning his head, he noticed a woman with a bright colored...oh. Basketball. And here he thought the Hunters were all work and no play.

"Room for another?" Jack called, twirling the little hand shovel idly.

A voice broke her train of thought, causing her to look up at a new face. Bright green eyes took in the shovel in his grasp. “Are you sure you shouldn’t be doing something else right now?” Alaska asked in a flat tone, brows raised as she balanced the ball against her hip. “Well, if you really want to play I don’t mind. Whatever else you have going on isn’t any of my business.” The sun hunter shrugged and passed the ball to Jack.

“First to fifteen points wins. How does that sound?”

If only Alaska could properly gauge how goddamn tall this man was compared to her. She might’ve actually reconsidered this game, but alas.

A woman with attitude. Brilliant, like the island didn't have enough.

Jack shrugged in return, plopping his tools down (Owain made a whining noise) before approaching. "All work and no play, you know," he replied airily, smiling at his own joke. He disliked the small layer of grime he felt on him (even when for the most part the dirt had clung to his clothes) as that was hardly the right first impression he wanted to give--but then, Jack was, at heart, a little dirty himself.

He stretched and popped his joints, rolling his shoulders as he turned to her. "Sounds fair. Might even go easy on you since I feel a little lazy~"

Oh contraire, Jack. Alaska had not only attitude but the violent anger to back it up, so it was better to watch it (too bad he would probably learn this the hard way.)

“As long as you don’t end up regretting this later.” She shrugged, only briefly glancing him from head to toe before reaching up to undo the braids in her hair. As much as Alaska enjoyed braiding it every morning, it felt a bit too much for when she was playing sports. A simple ponytail was enough to keep the shoulder-length hair out of her eyes. It was only when the life hunter stepped closer that she realized the full extent of his stature. Damn.

His words made sense, but as if she could ignore the annoyance already bubbling inside. She reached for the ball and bounced it back and forth. Tight lipped, she mumbled, “Fine” and rushed forward before sharply to the left.

"Pray tell, why would I regret playing my favorite game?" Amusement twinkled in his eyes--or maybe that was the sun. He eyed her odd choice for hair colors for a moment (this Island seemed to have its own populace for people with dyes) before bending his knees and shifting his weight forward. It had been a while since he had really been in a game--the closest he had been after dropping college was the occasional meet up with a few friends--but ingrained instincts after years of work didn't go away that easily.

He could tell off the bat, though, that this one had some experience too. It took time and effort to veer like that and keep control of the ball. Nevertheless, his long reach was an asset he was happy to use, and Jack swung himself after her, a hand darting out to steal the ball.

“I mean regret not finishing your work,” she answered simply before jumping back into the game.

Of course he would reach out for the ball, and of course his long arms would be useful, but Alaska knew something like this would happen. She could at least predict this much. She hadn’t been the point guard of her team for nothing. Lips pressed into a thin line as she came to a sudden halt and veered to the right and ducked beneath his arms.

how 2 write basketball scenes i can't

Long arms often meant long legs, a parallel that made itself very evident; Jack was at her heels in seconds, ducked lower as he remembered once again: height was great except when people evaded you.

"My work is finished for the day," he said amicably, as if they weren't in the middle of a game at all. "I have time to spare if you do~"

This didn't at all sound vaguely sinister or flirtatious at all; no sir, not even when the giant was practically moving right in front of her, arms coming around to once again try and steal the ball more aggressively than before; he almost looked ready to shove her even. no referee after all.

“Well, does it look like I have time to spare?” She had predicted this much too. Maneuvering around tall people had always been a pain, but usually it had been doable. Then again, her body hadn’t been playing basketball for at least a few months. Swerving around Jack would be more difficult than Alaska anticipated. She clicked her tongue and swung the ball slightly backwards while she twisted around to try and head back the other way. Her gaze strayed toward the gap between his legs and for a moment she considered it before his arms came around, more aggressive than before.

“s**t.” He was going to take it at any moment now. Instinct forced her to tightly hold the ball to herself until a teammate could come, but wait—

If something could not be stolen, it could at least be forced. Newton's First Law: An object that is in motion will not change its velocity unless an external force acts upon it.

Jack happily became that external force as he shoved the chick backward, less to get her on the ground than it was to try and unbalance her. Two instincts would happen then: a need to flail an arm to catch herself, or a tighter hold on the ball. Either way, he unabashedly reached for her chest to once again try and steal the damn basketball, ignoring Owain's distraught noises in his head.

It might be a game, but Jack always played to win.

I tried to keep it vague because I don't wanna gm, so you can determine how hard she got shoved and stuff ;v;

Years of playing basketball had ingrained the need to keep the ball at all times. It didn’t matter what happened. Keep holding onto that damn ball. So she did, all the way down to the ground. Alaska curled even tighter around the ball, preventing the other hunter from pulling it out of her grasp.

Unfortunately, that also meant she didn’t have a way to regain her balance and she landed into the dirt with a wonderful thud. She gritted her teeth, but said nothing as she kept her grip on the ball while trying to stand back up. At this point the referee would’ve gladly tooted his whistle, but alas it was just the two of them. Hey isn’t there a rule about how long you can hold the ball…? Alaska groaned loudly before tossing the ball in a random direction and chasing after it. “******** giants.”

There was rarely a more satisfying view of a world than that of a woman on the ground before him. It gave him a primal glee he couldn't put to words.

"Buy me dinner first, dear~" Jack purred, waiting for her to choose an action--that being to force them both to chase after the ball. Oh, was she still playing with rules involved? Precious. He ran after the basketball of course, but he also drew close again, because the first violation of personal space proved to be fruitful enough. Let's try a second time!

Namely, Jack was trying to trip her up by means of the placement of his feet into her stride: a natural enough accident in the game.

How fortunate that Alaska couldn’t read his mind, or she would’ve immediately gotten up and tackled-punched Jack to the ground.

He was testing her patience, but Alaska wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of blowing her fuse. Not yet, though she was heading down that road fairly quick. “Not exactly what I meant,” she mumbled as she ran after the ball.

Words failed to leave her mouth when she stumbled over her feet. “For the love of—“ Oh, is that how he wanted to play it? Fine, she knew how to do that too. Palms brushed against the ground to push herself back onto her feet. Oh so casually she roughly elbowed nudged him in the side as she reached for the ball.

That's okay, Alaska. That sort of reaction was very normal around Jack anyway.

Shoved back, he lost precious time to reach the ball; nevertheless, he barked a laugh as the chick started to finally figure out how to really play the game. While she would reach the ball before him, well . . . now she had a giant barreling after her.

"I don't think I caught your name," he said casually, like he was just chasing skirts instead of a ball.

Her hand reached for the ball and she grabbed it, but unfortunately now the other hunter was chasing after her. Rather than stand like a scared deer, Alaska jumped out of the way and tried to head for the makeshift basket, the ball bouncing against the dusty ground. She clicked her tongue as she tried to quickly conjure up an escape route, but to no avail. Size really was an important factor in basketball. Sigh.

“Alaska.” She answered curtly. “You?” ******** it. She decided to charge right by him, and maybe she would be able to squeeze out of his long reach.
