Amarus was on the prowl. She was, in fact, hunting for one specific boil: Jove, who had been Prom Prince when she had been the Princess. She had a very specific request for the young foxfire ghost, and she was hoping she'd be able to find him to ask him. In confidence, of course; it was something she didn't particularly want anyone else to know. In truth, she could hardly remember why it was that this was so important to her.

"Where might I find him?" she wondered, pressing one finger to her lips. She shrugged deeper into her scarf, and pulled the long, white fingerless gloves she was wearing tighter and lower so that they were not loose on the hands. It bothered her when they were. She was slinking around the grounds, searching for him, her telltale bells ringing across the area.

She thought she spotted him, in whatever form he currently had, and headed towards him slowly, same way she always walked: her purple-pink glow cast around her, a halo of light, and her feet walked an inch or two above the ground as though she simply had an extra layer to walk on that was invisible to the naked eye. As close to being alive as she could be.

"Jove? Is that you? I had, ah, a request I wished to make. Do you have a moment to hear me out?"

Bells. Bells.

Jove had heard the familiar ring of little bells a long way off, the sound being carried gently in the breeze. It was not uncommon to hear soft, echoing sounds around campus, as many students had a fondness for one eerie noise or another, but this one sounded... broken. Stuttered. Like a little bird flitting here and there in the search of nuts and seeds.

And Jove had never seen a little bird with bells before.

He poked his little head out from the bushes, all fluff and curiosity, only to realize he knew who those bells belonged to. That's why they were familiar, he had run into their owner on several occasions! The little ghost's tail wagged, and then suddenly instead of a tiny fluffy foxfire there was an elegantly dressed boil of about fifteen or sixteen. That was how he had greeted her last, right?

When his ears perked forward it gave him a younger appearance, but he couldn't help it. Had all that noise been her looking? Finally he nodded, there was no way he could say no to a ghoul's request!

Smiling sincerely, she took a step towards the ghost pup and held out her arms, as if asking for a hug.

All of her memories of Jove were good ones, and as such, Amarus was very happy to see him now-- even if getting used to his teenage form was a little strange, she thought he was cute this way, anyhow. Besides, it might be a little easier to fulfill her request if he was in this form. "It feels like there's some reason for it, but... Remember how we danced that one time? I don't know why, but I, ah, miss dancing... and I do not know who else I can ask."

"I was wondering if, sometime, you might dance with me again? I don't need others around for it, there's just something familiar about it, and it's making me sad not to dance. You are the only one who I feel I can ask this of," she tried to explain, making her words slow and calm and even, even if she felt extremely exposed asking.

"If you'd, ah, rather not, that is okay," she said. She was being oddly polite, given how she used to behave.

It looked like... a hug? Did she want a hug?

The pup's ears flicked back briefly, in a slightly conflicted gesture. Ghouls did like hugs, and kisses and petting his hair, and although it was at great odds with his desire to be tough and scary... He just couldn't say no. Because... ghouls. He was a proper gentleman!

But then she continued with her real request. And Jove perked up visibly. Only a dance? That was a task he could do, a task he had been trained to do! He nodded with a tail wag, the sort of short, enthusiastic wag known to little dogs with curly tails. And then he tilted his head, did she want to dance here? There wasn't any music, but he would go with her if she had a better place in mind.

Amarus watched Jove's ears flick back. She wasn't very familiar with him, it was true, so she didn't know how to read that. Displeasure at the hug? Amarus slowly wrapped her arms around herself, instead, as if she was cold. She kept them there, eyes cast down at the ground, her aura pressed low to her skin.

"I am glad that you do not mind the dance, then... There is a classroom that I go to when it is after hours, but perhaps the Ghost commons would suit us better? The former? Or the latter?" she asked, pausing in between each to allow him time to nod or shake his head.

"As for music... ah, I still need to figure that one out. Perhaps I can, ah, borrow, someone's eyePhone and use it to broadcast something. I am out of practice. I wish I remembered why I feel like it is so necessary to dance," she said, a little frown tugging at the edge of her mouth.

Someone she had forgotten. Someone she'd felt strongly about.

There was something... unusual about Amarus and her current behaviour, and the longer her hesitance persisted the more disquieted Jove felt over it. It definitely wouldn't do to have one of his friends in such a state.

He ignored all her questions, and instead he reached out and put one hand on her arm, reassuring, and wagged his tail. It was okay, no need to look at the ground. They would dance, and it would be better than a hug! And if forgetting still bothered her, maybe she would remember.

For once Jove didn't offer his arm like usual, he took the initiative to take her by the hand and pull her towards the ghost dorms. There was definitely enough place in the common room! And... if he had it... on him... After a moment of rooting around in one lace-lined pocket he triumphantly pulled out his own eyePhone. It was not used often due to his uncommunicative nature, but today he was thankful to have it, and have an over-excitable older brother to put music on it for him! They had everything they needed!

Amarus' eyes flicked up immediately as she felt Jove put one hand on her arm. She smiled, suddenly, and felt as if he'd pulled her out of whatever dark place she'd been for that moment-- somewhere deep inside her mind, pressing against locked memories, places inside herself she was no longer welcome.

"You are always so kind to me, Jove," she said, quietly, as he pulled her by the hand. She really wasn't, apparently, in the best of states; something about the vulnerability of asking for this made her feel very weak, and she did not like feeling that. Still, it was with Jove, so she wasn't inclined to exaggerate her strength suddenly as if to prove to him that she didn't need him. Instead, she was just grateful.

She squeezed his hand, as if saying thank you, and followed him happily, her bells ringing. Seldom was anyone brave enough to lead her anywhere at all, and this made her happy. Not to mention the eyePhone, which he pulled out. Amarus smiled, slowly at first and then it caught up her entire expression.

The lock wrapped tightly against her chest grew hot again: That phone, left in a bowl of punch. It said something, didn't it? Something terrible. The end of the end. She couldn't remember at all what had been on her phone: a missed call? a received call? a photo, a text, Critter-- it could have been anything at all, and she'd have no idea. All that she'd ever recover of those memories was back. She pressed the back of one hand lightly to her forehead and tried not to let Jove see it.

"You are more prepared for this than I am, and you did not even know what I was going to ask you," she mused, with a half-smile.

Face your demons

One ear turned backwards to hear what Amarus was saying, and then Jove glanced back with a reassuring expression. It wasn't quite a smile, since he rarely showed such an obvious indicator of positive emotion, but it was gentle. Sometimes that's what they really needed, someone to be kind to them, with all the craziness that happened at this school. He had so many thoughts in his head sometimes, pieces of himself occasionally floating to the surface of his mind that were like looking at someone else entirely. Sometimes even he needed a little bit of kindness to realize it was okay to be a little fractured inside.

He didn't see her motion of dismay, but he felt it, that slight change in emotion he was so easily able to pick up on. He squeezed her hand again, tugging her quickly past the tombstones outside the ghost dorms, and through the doors and down the stairs into the crypt. Not fast enough to run, or risk a misstep on those long, dark stairs, but fast enough to keep things moving. It was important they spend as little travel time as they could for some reason.
