Fresh powder crunched under broad paws as the saber idly stalked through the woods of the taiga, tall pines reaching for the sky above and dark trunks casting a sharp contrast against the white snow. Bits of grass and underbrush colored the ground between snowdrifts as he scanned the tree lines, waiting for something to catch his eye, but his luck so far left much to be desired of his surroundings. It'd been quite some time since Tohngo had last seen another warm body, food or no. "Heh, this keeps up, I just might go nuts." He chuckled to himself as he came over a ridge. A wide line of deep dots in the snow told him that something had been through the small divot of a valley.

He relaxed, stalk easing into a gliding stride with his nose to the ground... well, to the snow, letting the stale scent weave the story of the deer herd that had traveled through the area, probably the better part of a day ago, enough for the new snowfall to fill the bottom of the tracks but not erase the holes completely. But they were long gone. Either way, he followed the tracks. If he kept up the steady pace, he'd catch up to them eventually, assuming they followed the typical food pattern of walk, eat a bit, walk a little more and stop to eat again.

Starwatcher was hungry.

Wandering the northernmost reaches of her territory meant wandering through snow, and if there was one thing the short and stout feline hated, it was snow. There really was no quiet way to walk across the snow, and the constant crunch crunch of the white stuff was a constant reminder of how hungry she was.

After following a small herd of deer for a few hours, another scent caught her attention. It wasn't a familiar one, but Starwatcher was hungry enough not to care. At this point anything was considered supper. She was far too cranky to be picky.

He'd been on the trail for a while. A few hours, probably. The good news was, the scent was getting stronger. The bad news was, not by that much. As a rogue, he didn't pay too much attention to territorial lines, though the fact he had crossed into a new one a while back was a promising sign. If the area was well off enough to support a permanent resident, well. He could probably snatch up a meal or two while he passed through.

He took pause, shaking a few clumps of snow free from his forepaw before rolling his shoulders, bowing to stretch his stocky frame and yawning wide, cold air filling his lungs and giving him a brisk little wake up. Stalking was always so... Tedious. Tohngo settled his rump in the snow, lazily scratching at an itch as the moment of revitalization quickly passed.

Crunch...

Crunch...

Crunch...

Crunch...

His ears swiveled towards the sounds...Slow... too heavy for deer.... too light for a mammoth... He gave a soft churrl noise as he thought, watching where the sounds came from. Had he not been on the alert, he might have missed it. Nose lifted to the wind, but he was already upwind. No dice. A few moments of thought and he was back on his paws, heading off towards the left of dinners trail. A snowdrift would make for a decent lookout spot, rounding the small mound and settling behind it, white nose peeking just over the edge as he kept his ears flattened. Might be bear, might be tiger.... He'd sit tight for now. Getting in a fight on an empty stomach could be... disastrous.

your little images make me so happy ;; <3 <3

As the strange scent grew thicker - heavier - Starwatcher forced her footfalls to become lighter. It wasn't easy. She'd always had a stocky build for a smilodon, but she was bound and determined to make a meal of... whatever or whoever she'd happened upon. Her nostrils flared as she inhaled deeply, slipping closer until she happened across a broad patch of bare ground.

Blue eyes flickered briefly along the surrounding area until - ah, there. A male, or so she thought. It was difficult to see exactly how big he was, as she'd only barely caught sight of ... his nose?

Filled with confidence now (as she wasn't dealing with something bigger, like a mammoth or a bear), Starwatcher boldly moved from her position and staggered out into the open. It was completely obvious that she did not care if she was seen.

"This is mine," she gestured broadly with a wide paw, nose wrinkled. "You're trespassing."

He had to hold in a chuckle.Someone should make that the official greeting, he thought. Oh well, the jig was up. He'd been spotted.

He came out of his crouch, standing and shaking a bit of loose snow from his fur."
Aye, 'allo to you too, miss...?" He padded around the snow drift, slowly, relaxed, but ready to dodge a swipe should his... Friendly greeting be ill met. He kept a bit of distance between himself and the sturdy female, sizing her up. He could probably take her, but what good would that do aside from inviting aches and exhaustion.

He offered a slight nod of his head, not quite a bow, though."
No harm meant, but ah've been trackin this herd since last snowfall. Hard quarry to give up." He motioned towards the tracks, keeping an eye on her.

no they're utterly fantastic and i freakin' love them!!

His greeting seemed to mollify her, and the tension in her seemed to fade just slightly. It might've been a ruse, and she'd been tricked one time too many in her life. She wasn't completely willing to give in to his greeting and kindness just yet.

"Starwatcher." Her maw parted in a toothy sort of grin, though there was that wariness that lurked in the depths of her blue eyes. The female wasn't usually one to find herself too riled up, but the gnawing hunger in her gut and the annoyance of the snow was enough to keep her standoffish.

Besides, he seemed nice enough.

"They move fast," she conceded, eyeing the tracks. Her stubby tail whipped about before coming to a stop. Starwatcher entertained the thought of sharing the hunt - and following meal - with him. It was easier to hunt in pairs, after all. She'd done it a few times herself in the past, wanderers with that same ache in their belly. "What do you call yourself?"
