Something didn't quite feel right within Captain Buddingtonite this evening, but the Negaverse officer couldn't quite put his finger on it. By all means, he should be happy, given recent circumstances. His ungrateful tenant had found a place of her own and moved out, which left the apartment and himself free from her scrutiny, though it would figure that she'd take her leave when he was starting to grow used to her company.
Oh well, no skin off his back. That meant he could have guests over more often, have all the sexy parties he wanted, and all the liquor in his cabinets would be his once more. A win-win-win situation for his boring, old civilian self.
If he ever had time for it. Now, he found himself taking to the streets, just beyond his usual hunting grounds, and he wasn't necessarily on the prowl. More like... just wandering, enjoying the feel of his uniform and the power that came with it. What he SHOULD have been doing was plotting his public draining spectacle, but he had no desire to dwell on it for the moment. He'd do it tomorrow... maybe get Serpentine's opinion or backing, and then-
He felt the ping of an approaching Order signature, and without thinking, he summoned his boomerang and looked around. His recent encounters with that Senshi of Dogs made him uneasy, and he looked up to the tall buildings first. He gave a cautionary shout, no doubt sounding much more fierce and brave than he truly felt. "Now that isn't polite of you to try to sneak up on me like that! I haven't even done anything yet! Show yourself, right now!"

"Buddy."
From a shadowed alley, Medea stepped forward. Though her skirt and bodice and ribbons shimmered bright as always, her eyelids drooped and she leaned against the brick because the purple captain stuck his hand into her chest and wrapped his fingers around that precious gem and pulled it, and even though she powered up to fulfill her duty to protect the innocent ones, she felt weak. Exhausted. Sad.
"Something bad happened."
Could she rely on her protector as much as she relied on his colleague?Mariposite made her believe he liked her, and then...She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. She didn't want to fight--didn't believe in fighting them when they could forgive each other and move on--but Mariposite made it...difficult.
She closed her eyes. She wanted to trust Buddy, but it seemed the longer she stayed in this war, the more the Negaverse sought to destroy her. He seemed like her only hope for the opposing faction--that they felt compassion, sympathy.
But how could she know?

"Medea, how is my-" The voice that called out rung many bells within his head, the first of which was recognition. Medea! His darling little enchantress! But its gentle chime was followed by a more foreboding toll, as her voice was uncharacteristically weak and heavy with sorrow, and it was that warning bell that caused him to put away his weapon and turned to face her. Gorgeous as always, but he couldn't ignore her distress, and his concern was as genuine as he could allow it to be, given his position in this war and their opposing sides. "Medea, what happened to you?"
It was a callous thing to say, probably insensitive, considering what she had just admitted, but he couldn't stop the words from spilling out of his mouth. He rushed to her side in a heart beat, instantly suspecting that she had gotten into a fight but uncertain with who. One of his own? Or the Dark Mirror Court? He hoped it was the latter- that he could easily explain away, but if it was one of his own...
He had little time to consider such a possibility, as soon he was at her side, offering not only his supportive hand but his protection as well, as he tried to usher her back into the alleyway, away from prying eyes. "Don't worry now, I'm here to protect you know. Come, over here... give me a moment and I'll find something comfortable for you to sit on."
Maybe a box, or a crate... would they even be safe there? He considered the possibility of teleporting her elsewhere, but where could he take her? And what if he needed that energy to escape for himself later? What if this was a trap? Such thoughts were quelled as he kept at her side, offering what protection and assurance he could provide. He'd cross that bridge later...

Before he left to find her a seat, she brought his hand to her cheek and pressed against it. His glove reminded her of their first meeting, when she brought it to her lips, and he felt as warm as before and seemed as kind and gentle, but she thought similarly of Mariposite, and then...But Mariposite never promised to protect her. Would Buddy follow through? She studied him with eyes warm like honey and soft and worrisome, and she gripped his hand tight before releasing. She desired so passionately for everything to be alright, but this war confused her--made her think the captain who brought her taffies and chocolates couldn't like her, think of her kindly, dream of peace. How many agents even purified? She couldn't tell.
It seemed so harsh.
"Thank you, Buddy." She felt exhausted. "It's a long story, but..." She stumbled near him. "It has to do with this."
She pressed his hand to her chest and searched his eyes for hope, adoration, kindness, understanding--anything to show he would never, ever hurt her.

It was hard to keep a poker face around Medea, as Buddingtonite was quick to find out. Her gesture did not go unnoticed and he forced his shoulders and body to relax so that he could not only provide her the comfort she obviously longed for but hide his own inner dread. Not just because he wanted to give this illusion that he was strong and prideful, but because he didn't want her to suspect him of any fowl acts this evening. He had worked so hard to gain her trust... "Calm yourself, now. I'm here, so there's nothing to worry about."
Except that was a horrible lie, but with the way he'd present himself, one would think otherwise. And if he could help it, he'd make sure that she thought the same. As he pulled up a crate for her to rest on, she stumbled towards him, and not once did he think her to be faking or trying to lure him into a false sense of security. No, she looked far too exhausted, too hurt for him to even consider the notion anymore. Especially now, when she had grabbed his hand and placed it right over her own chest, to explain what had happened. Buddingtonite fancied himself an intelligent man, and it did not take him long to realize the hidden meaning behind that gesture, even when she seemed unaware of what the action was.
Suddenly, his sense of dread was gone, but it was merely replaced with another emotion. Anger. Fury, which was barely contained in his voice as he asked a very question. "Who...?"
He kept his hand where it was and didn't pull away, despite the initial instinct to do so. Why was that even a viable response was beyond him. He should have pushed his hand through and finished the job, assuming it was a Negaverse officer that had done this. Who? Who would dare try and take his target's starseed? He hoped and prayed mentally that it was a Dark Mirror Senshi or perhaps a lower ranked officer... because all he could think about was making them PAY for this assault! He repeated himself when he thought that she did not hear him, and he pulled himself closer, his smile and warmth gone. "Who tried to take your starseed, Medea?"

"I want to believe you." A cloud passed over. She lowered her gaze. "I want to believe you would never hurt me..." She met his gaze--tears slipping down her cheeks. "But how can I believe you--" She collapsed against him. "--when Captain Mariposite betrayed my trust?"
She slumped forward and sobbed. She would stain his suit. Pity. She loved the depth of gray, the touches of red. Squeezing his hand on her chest, she wondered why he didn't kill her. Obviously his colleagues had no qualms about betraying her friendship. Why wouldn't he?
The fire in his eyes, though, reassured her that Buddy wouldn't kill her just yet. Passion lurked beneath the surface, just under his tone, his calmness. Did he feel angry? Not the Alois-angry, but the righteous fury of her colleagues? The anger that drove them to defend their court?
Would Buddy defend her too?
She looked at her protector and drifted to the crate. She sat and leaned forward--ready to pass out.
"He was my friend too," she muttered. She couldn't look at him...ashamed of her trust...but Buddy made her heart soar!
And when he rips out your soul, it'll hurt all the more...

Buddingtonite was no stranger to fear or surprise, or any emotion really, and the moment she questioned his sincerity and promise was enough to send an icy fist into his stomach. And to continue its painful and humiliating assault, Medea had confessed that it was one of his fellow officers that had done this. He had no idea who Captain Mariposite was and if he had seen him, it was only in passing, but he didn't need to have a face to that name. The fact that he was a Negaverse officer that had not only attacked and attempted to steal or corrupt his Medea, but had betrayed her trust in doing so.
It was… admirable, and among the growing rage he felt, he could not ignore a sense of jealousy and envy flaring up within him as well. This Mariposite was playing the same game that he was, except this one played a little rougher, and downright dirty, and as a Negaverse officer that wanted a few victories under his belt, he could understand that method, and even respect it.
But… this was different. This wasn't a Dark Mirror Senshi or a senior officer that he could easily explain away and regain her trust with little effort, but an officer of the same rank, and one that was playing a very similar game. Whether Mariposite's intention was forced corruption or simply stealing her starseed and ridding the Negaverse of another troublesome Senshi, he had made a mistake in targeting his target, and the sneer that was present on his face wasn't for the young Senshi barely standing before him, but for his own officer.
"He more than crossed the line," Buddingtonite said with a snarl, and despite his rage, he tried to be gentle with her, and he forced his hand away from her chest and instead cupped her shoulders, continuing to hold her up and remaining firm and steady, in hopes of regaining some of that trust. "He obliterated it! He had no right to do so, and I'm going to have a nice, long, heart-to-heart talk with him. Where did he attack you?"
Medea was his, and he was going to let him know, one way or the other. Consequences be damned!

She took a deep breath to feel calm like the ocean, like the sky, like the wind sweeping through the alley, brushing their hair to the side, like the darkness behind her eyes as she closed them to stop herself from crying. They flashed open--sparkly and wet, and she looked at him with the look of being led by the hand through nighttime woods, clutching the grasp with white knuckles, pretending not to fear, but watching for tangled roots as they drifted farther and farther into the dark, but the ferocity in his voice brought her back, and the last tear dried as she took hope in Buddy's claims.
"You would protect me?"
In that moment, Buddy became Medea's best friend and closest ally. She would never hurt him. Never dream of hurting him. Would defend him at all costs. Would do anything to repay him.
"You would really do that for me?" She had an understanding of the consequences. She shook her head. She couldn't let him go through with it. "I don't want you to get hurt, Buddy. I really care about you--"
Wait.
What?
What did she say?
She froze. She meant it. What did this mean for him? What did this mean for her? Another hand around her starseed? Never seeing him again? Did she want this? Yes. Did she like this? No. This could only hurt, right? Neither of them could survive. Neither would see each other again, and their superiors would fill his heart with darkness and hers with light until they became faction puppets, clashing, never caring or remembering or sympathizing again.
Right?

It took him so much effort not to want to snap at her when asked if he would protect her. Of course he'd protect her! Medea was his ongoing project, not anyone else's in the Negaverse, and she was his friend. He gave her a firm nod, trying to quell his own anger in hopes of soothing her, in hopes of regaining that trust that he had spent a great amount of time and effort building, and he wasn't going to allow anyone short of a general or General-King or Queen tarnish his hard work! If Medea was going to come to the Negaverse, it would be through him, and him alone…
"Of course I'll protect you," Buddingtonite said, putting on a much kinder front but still letting her hear the steel in his voice as he rubbed her shoulders in a strong, but soothing motions. "Maybe I can't protect you from everything, but another Captain? You should have been safe, and he lied to you, and I won't tolerate that! I'll have a nice heart-to-heart with this Mariposite, and if it resorts to fisticuffs, then at least I'd make my point clear."
And that point being Hands off my Medea!
His red hot anger was quelled for a moment when she made her confession, and Buddingtonite wasn't quite sure… how he felt about that. It should have been a relief to hear this, as it meant that he managed to gain back some of that trust that Mariposite had crushed, but she sounded so sincere when she said it. That she did care about him… and that this wasn't just a ruse to lure her over to his side for his own selfish desires. When she said 'I really care about you', he wanted to immediately reply with 'and I do too', but he forced those words down. For a brief moment, he felt detached, as if a part of him was trying to grab his shoulder and shake some sense into him before this little game went too far.
But… he had already promised to 'talk' to Mariposite, and for the sake of regaining that shaky trust in Media, what choice did he have now? He gave her shoulder another squeeze, his smile nothing more than a glass facade, threatening to crack with the slightest bit of pressure. "Once you're someplace safe, I'll go address this matter with him. Where can I take you? Where would you feel safe?"

He didn't say it. She studied the smile. He would follow through, but why didn't he say it? She nodded. At least he would avenge her, right? She only wanted that. Nothing more. Never anything more than revenge. Perfect. No heartaches. No schisms. Just revenge. He would even hide her away while he did it. How protective. She would feel...safe. Yes. That word. The only thing she asked of him. Safety. Safety through revenge.
"Okay." She couldn't hide the hurt. She trusted him, yes, but she couldn't shake the aching. Yearning for his care, it...She shook her head and smiled. It was just a game. No feelings. Nothing. She felt grateful, actually, that he didn't respond--that he even still desired to protect her. That was so kind! How generous! She laughed the tired, weary laugh. "WELL. I guess I could stake out in the factory. From my experience, we're the only ones who visit. Is that alright?"
Maybe she would meet her end. Maybe he would take her, return with the captains and kill her there, but she couldn't bear with suspicion. She felt too tired. Her head ached.
She just wanted to trust.

She seemed hurt by his refusal to return the words, but it was honestly for the best. Buddingtonite, nor Richard, could afford to give in to such a thing, and he refused to fancy the notion, as small or minuscule it might have been, that he might have been in lo… lo… the word simply would not be uttered, not even mentally. He was protecting his investment, and nothing more!
He never once thought that this was all a clever ploy, that the moment he took her into his arms and brought her to the factory where they're met twice before that he'd be jumped by a score of senshi and knight. He had met one of the former members of the Blood Moon Court and suspected that those days were over, and if anyone were to betray him, it wouldn't have been Medea. He pushed that notion aside, as he lifted her into his arms, a relatively easy task even without his enhanced strength granted to him by Chaos. "Alright then, if that's where you feel the safest, then that's where we'll go. Once there, find a good hiding place, and I'll return before the night's through."
He couldn't promise that another captain or general would find her, but he had hoped that if she sensed someone stronger than himself approaching that she'd flee. Medea was probably naive before, but this would have undoubtedly caused her to wise up, and he could only hope that she'd worry more about self preservation that do something incredibly stupid and get herself killed. He wasn't sure if his pride, or his heart, could handle returning to the factory to find her mangled corpse.
"Ready? This is going to take some effort… as I've never tried teleporting with a senshi in my hands."elza magic With your permission, of course, Buddy will whisk her away to safety, and then go talk to this meanie! >_<

She relaxed. This was...nice. She pressed her head to his chest. Was there a starseed in there too? Maybe. How much chaos could one take? How much did he absorb? Would it rub off on her? Turn her into someone like Adonis. She hoped not, but then, she would find out Buddy's true self. Maybe. The self that didn't come with with pressure for her to convert. Of course that's what he wanted. Right?
She smiled at him.
Right?
No. She realized--fooled by the heart. No, I don't think that's what he's planning. I think he might actually want to protect me.
A mistake.
A terrible, terrible mistake.
Despite what feelings Buddy harbored--potential or true--Medea made the error of letting her guard down. No more suspicion or worry or fear. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and said, "Thank you Buddy." She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled herself deeper into his arms. "Let's go."

It would have been so easy, he thought, as he held her close to his chest, to have whisked her away to the Rift. He would have been exhausted, drained, weakened to the point that he'd have been an easy target, but he could have dragged her before a General-King or Queen. It would have been so easy to trick her into the Negaverse, and there, he could truly protect her. So very easy.
But, the thought crossed his mind for only a second, before he decided against it. He could not rush things. He could not force her, if he truly cared about having a loyal and dependable, and human, companion in arms. And given the stress she was under and her weakened state, he could not fathom the thought of her starseed simply shattering in either a superior's or his own grip...
He pulled her close, giving her a confident nod before teleporting himself and his guest into a familiar facility. Never had the abandoned warehouse look so welcoming, but he had little time and energy to bask in the shelter it offered. A quick mental sweep of the area confirmed that they were the only powered ones there, and he set her down on the conveyer belt, refusing to let her see just how much strain he put himself through to get them both here. "Now, be a good girl and stay here. If it gets too late and I'm not back, then get yourself home. Stay out of trouble..."
He didn't wait for an answer, making it clear that it wasn't a topic he was willing to debate with her, and he turned away to storm out of the building. He wasn't going to waste his energy searching the entire city for Mariposite, not when he could just call him through their crystals. The two of them were going to have a nice little showdown in the park... to set down some very important ground rules.elza magica And going to call a wrap for Buddy. You can either let her stay hiding or she can power down and try to get home while he's gone. EITHER OR.

"Buddy!" she cried out for him. "Buddy, you're coming back right?!" He walked further away. "RIGHT?!"
But he was gone.
She felt crushed.
She laid on the conveyor belt and stared at the ceiling, her eyes slowly shuting as she placed her hands over her starseed. She hoped no one would come by, but even if they did, maybe she deserved it--the beatings. the pullings. the smirks--for endangering the one agent she adored.
What if he didn't come back?
She shook and rolled onto her side, her hands pressing deeper into her chest. Take it out. Take it out. Why couldn't she just take it out? For him? For her? It caused so much pain, but she couldn't, for if she did, it would hurt him.. He really believed in her, she thought. Really liked her, and if she took that away, he would feel hurt. She could never. Wouldn't hurt him like that. Not Buddingtonite.
