Medals. The very name made Mariposite have some sort of inner satisfaction. He liked the idea of them. He liked the looks of them. And now…well. Now he just wanted one. It had taken him a little while to figure out just which one he wanted, and he had decided on the ripping out a senshi starseed. That seemed like the very best choice to take, besides. It matched his colors the best, and that’s what really counted, now wasn’t it?

He was out looking, searching for a senshi, for that first senshi would be the one that he took it from. And it would be wonderful, and then he would have a shiny new medal to pin to his uniform and nobody would take him for granted again.

Grinning, Mariposite continued his trek through the city, pausing when he felt the aura of a senshi nearby. He moved towards it and saw a very pink poofy skirt, and the familiar hair of Sailor Medea. “Oh. It’s you, is it?” So this was it. This was his fate chosen victim. Well. It could have been worse, couldn’t it have. It could have been someone prettier, or someone nicer.

At least this was someone he didn’t like. Sure. Didn’t like her one bit.

Even if his first desire was to go to her and pull her close again…nope. He had to shove his hand in and rip. Shove and rip. That was the way of things. And that’s what he would do.

The voice!

Mariposite! Sweet, hurt, attractive Maripsoite. She smiled and laughed. Oh! She missed him--his flowing golden hair! His sparkling eyes! She wanted his forgiveness desperately--to know they were alright. She turned.

"Captain!" She drew near. The trees rustled. The birds stopped chirping. "It's a pleasure to see you." Her smile faded. "I'm sorry about last time we met. It was wrong of me to push you--especially when you were so open and kind to me. Maybe we could start again? Promise I won't pressure you..."

She grinned.

Maybe they would be alright.

He watched her, felt a slight pang of pity for her, then pushed it aside, summoning his whip into his hand. “Fine. You want to start again, we will. Hello Senshi. Meet Mr. Negaverse. How do you do?”

He leapt at her then, holding the whip tightly and swinging it at her, wanting to do some damage before he did the one final deed.

There was no way that he could just go in guns blazing and shove a hand in her chest. That was just too much. No, he had to work his way up…and well. Violence seemed to be the answer here. So well. That’s what he did. He was a very violent guy.

Medea's smile dropped. She felt heavy with disappointment. I guess he won't like me anymore... She leapt out of the way. Maybe if she could pin him down, she could reason with him? Captive audiences made for the best listeners! He would definitely accept her apology! Smiling with hope, she dashed for Mariposite, aiming to tackle him by the stomach.

"PEAAACE."

Yep. She would win this for sure. Then they could be happy and warm and soft again.

What the hell was this girl doing? This wasn’t part of the plan. One moment he was on his feet, brandishing his whip at her, the next he was being pinned down by her. A very grumpy expression crossed his features and he used his strength to roll her over, pinning her down instead. “Peace? You really want peace, senshi?”

Damn those pretty eyes and that beautiful hair of hers. He couldn’t help running a hand through it at least once. “What kind of peace are you hoping for? Lasting peace? Peace like the end of this war? Or your own peace? Inner peace?”

Maybe eternal peace. He could provide that for her, he was sure.

His hand slid down her cheek, moving downwards just slightly. He didn’t want to alarm her, not yet anyway. She would know what was going on soon enough, he was sure.

Finding his pin more playful than dangerous, she laughed and nuzzled her head against his palm. She desired this from him. The physicality reminded her that everything would be alright, and they could smile and joke about their dangerous lives and pretend this war didn't exist. Yes, this would be her happy moment. She said, "Ah Mariposite. You make me glad. I don't know! Peace between us I guess. I really like you."

She lifted her head upward to stare deeper into his eyes.

"I know I shouldn't because we've just met and everything, but I just think you're so kind and sweet and awesome, and I want to hang out and talk about stupid things with you. Is that okay?"

She hoped it was okay. She rested her head against the concrete.

"I don't think you're bad or anything. It's just that sometimes I get too wrapped up in this war, and it's not fair to you, I guess. Especially if you're not doing anything wrong." She smiled. "I really am sorry about last time, you know."

He was wavering. The more he listened to her talking, the less he wanted to actually do what he came here to do. “You’re wrong, Medea…” Mariposite said softly, closing his eyes for a moment. “Chaos corrupts us. It swells within us and tarnishes every good part of our hearts and minds…until there’s nothing left but the chaos. The evil. Nothing can stop that. Not the senshi, the knights…nothing. I am evil, and I don’t think it can change.”

The captain drew in a breath and finally plunged his hand into her chest, letting his fingers wrap lightly around her starseed.

So this is what it felt like. Well. It was both disgusting and oddly satisfying. But…something inside of him was enjoying it, something inside of him was proud that he was doing this.

Something inside of him wanted to do more. Wanted to rip it from her chest, wanted to watch the light leave her eyes. Maybe even wanted to shatter the delicate little gem to see what it would do to her.

Something inside of Mariposite was breaking.

Well, it was a good life.

A good life. With movies and canoes and cats and roses and sunshine. So much sunshine filtering through windows and curtains and onto her bed. How she loved that beautiful, pink bed, covered in pillows and blankets and plushies yes she loved everyone and everything so much Mariposite why would he ever she couldn't understand this pain it wrapped around her and squeezed her too tight the tears ran down her cheeks and she cried out stop but why would he

her little light in his hands it didn't feel warm anymore he didn't feel warm anymore but at least she could die in the hands of someone she liked

"plea--"

He looked at her, drawing in a slightly ragged breath. She wasn’t fighting. She wasn’t struggling she wasn’t doing anything that girls did in the movies. This was almost no fun. This was.

This was murder. He was going to end up killing her.
Mariposite’s blood ran cold at the very thought, and without realizing it, he had taken his hand out of her chest, and brought the starseed with it.
Oh god.

For a long moment he just stared at it. It was beautiful, a perfect little thing and all at once, he just couldn’t. He couldn’t do this. He couldn’t just take it. He couldn’t kill her. He wasn’t…he wouldn’t…

With trembling fingers the captain placed the starseed back into Medea’s chest and finally just sat there, staring at the girl, hoping that she wasn’t dead.

Hoping that those few seconds hadn’t been too many seconds. He swallowed, then leaned down, giving her a gentle kiss on the lips.

What had he done…?

“I’m sorry…”

Medea's eyes flashed open. She brought her hand to her lips, and shaking, she scooted away from him. She tried to stand. Her pupils shrank and then they grew. The lights seemed so bright.

"Go away..." She whispered. "Go away."

Her arm gave out from under her and she landed on her knees, coughing. She leaned forward and studied the cracks in the pavement.

The ground seemed so much rougher.

She glared at Mariposite.

"GO AWAY!"

Mariposite visibly winced, though said nothing, finally he just stood up, nodding. “Okay. I’m going.” He hesitated for a moment before taking hold of her, picking her up into his arms. “I’m going. I promise I’m going. But first.” He closed his eyes and concentrated hard, teleporting to a little ways away from the hospital, placing the senshi down again.

He was completely exhausted now. Teleporting was difficult enough without bringing someone along for the ride, but hey. He couldn’t just leave her. With one last glance at Medea, Mariposite was off, teleporting away again, then just collapsing in his bed at home.

Well. That had been a complete and utter failure. Now he had no medal…and Medea hated him…

And it seemed like Camelot was right. Maybe the chaos inside of him was destroying him. He really…didn’t think he liked the sound of that at all. Not one little bit.

Luckily he set her behind a wall. She powered down, leaned against the brick and cried.

How could he do this to her?

He hurt so badly, and she liked him so much.

Balancing against the wall, she stood, wiped her tears and stumbled to the hospital.

I mustn't give up hope-- Her eyes shined like fire. --that everything will be okay.
