The fact Zia was unemployed seemed periphery and unimportant as she gazed over the overpriced abomination she'd ordered from the cafe.
A purist in matters of liquor and tobacco, it apparently didn't apply to lattes since Zia's usual was a syrupy, sugary, mountain of whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
There was coffee in there too, somewhere.
She needed energy for job hunting. Or just, being outside of the house pretending she was job hunting, so really her super special order was a necessary purchase and not a waste at all. This was her reasoning, at least. Especially when she ran back up to the counter, rather rudely in the case of anyone else stuck waiting there.
"Hey, can I get a donut too?"

Fiona hadn't seen Zia initially, if she had then she likely would have gone directly to the lavender haired woman and pointedly asked her where the hell she had been. The ginger haired woman would artfully avoid mentioning that she herself had disappeared into the background, socializing could be a chore at times, because it was far more important to find out where her friend had been.
She did, however, see Zia when she so rudely cut in front of her right as she was about to order. Her lips pressed together and her eyebrows pointed inward in agitation. "Excuse me," she said pointedly, snagging the woman's arm and tugging. "There's a line," she continued, surprise overtaking her features when she realized just who's arm she was tugging on. "Zia?!" Her name came out in a strangled gasp as she suddenly let go and clamped her hands over her mouth, mismatched eyes wide.
"OhmygodZiaisthatyou?" The sentence came out in a jumble, very quick and blended together.

Zia's eyes rolled up to the ceiling and she was about to turn and inform this person that yes there was a line but she only needed the clerk's attention for a second and on some level was maybe just a bit above the peons in the line, but luckily the redhead opened her mouth before she did.
And Zia promptly closed it and pursed her lips as she rapidly glanced from side to side and back to Fiona.
"Yes?" It took a second, but even with her shaky, pre-Zirconia memory Fiona's mismatched eyes were hard to forget. And when it hit her, everything came flooding back in a wave.
"FIONAAAAA!" She practically wailed, grabbing the younger girl in as big of a hug as her frame could physically muster.
"What are you doing here?" Besides getting pushed aside because of Zia's entitled donut lust.

Fiona hadn't been prepared to be pulled into the tight hug and she found herself laughing, clutching the girl tightly. "Zia!" She chirped at they pulled apart. "I just came to grab a cappuccino," she replied, suddenly remembering where she was. "Oh." She peeked at the line from the corner of her eye. The other patrons were growing considerably irritable. "I should probably do that."
She moved away from her lavender haired friend and towards the counter, placing both her palms on the table. "I need a grande nonfat vanilla cappuccino and the doughnut she wanted." She told the barista behind the counter, more curtly than intended. Once she paid, and dropped a bill in their tip jar, she pulled Zia away with her towards the counter where they'd deliver her drink.
"Where have you been?" She asked, tone overly excited. "Seriously, how long has it been. I haven seen you in aaaages."

Zia flounced to the side when Fiona seemed to notice the irritability of the patrons and made her order, graciously getting Zia's donut in the process. And she greedily took it with enthusiastic thanks.
She didn't really mind the charity, and she minded the tension even less.
"I've been around!" She said between bites. "Kind of. I dunno, I was kind of done with school after Shlip." From business major to homeless bum to mildly successful sales assistant to unemployed was kind of rough ride for only two years.
"Nooooot any of the crack addiction stories Luca tells, those are jokes," She added for emphasis, just covering any bases her idiot brother might've messed up. But Zia hadn't been up to date on any of her brothers besides Noah either. She ran to retrieve her latte so she could stand near Fiona while she waited and still talk. Zia was prone to loneliness even in the half a minute wait for a friend to get their drink.
"What have you been doing?"

"Life gets in the way of school sometimes," Fiona retorted, quietly. She herself had taken the semester off because she couldn't focus on any school-related work. Her mind had been too foggy and hazy as of late. She couldn't go spending money on school only to flunk out.
How would that reflect upon her?
"Oh you know, the same old same old," she replied, avoiding answering the question with anything that wasn't completely vague. It wasn't like her to keep from spilling the truth, no matter how ugly it was, but the ginger hadn't felt much like herself lately.
Living a dual-secret life did that to a person, especially when it lead to many near death experiences.
Her drink was called out and she turned quickly, grateful for the brief pause in conversation. She had expected to feel happier about seeing Zia, but running in to her old friend reminded her of how things use to be. She snatched the drink up and hurried back. "I moved out," she told her. It was a fairly neutral topic and definitely far away from admitting that life wasn't as she wanted it.

"Same old, same old. It's only been two years and, what, two major terrorist crises since I've seen you?" Zia snorted sarcastically with a smirk. "I'm sure it's just business as usual."
She seemed to be having trouble glue gunning snippets of memories together to get an accurate timeline going for her memories of Fiona. They were there, just a little disorganized. Probably because she had gotten mind-jacked for her last year at Sovereign Heights and hadn't really been 100% since.
And of all the not-neutral life topics to pick, she had to pick that one. It might've been neutral in Fiona's case, but Zia's various moves over the years, including her last one into a shitty apartment in a bad area of town for a boy had not been totally positive moves.
"Oh."
That was a weird way to respond, she realized after the flat and vaguely jealous sentiment escaped.
"Oh! I mean... out of your parents' place...?"

Fiona offered Zia a weak smile in response. What else was she supposed to say? That she was a secret magical sailor suited superhero who was probably suffering from some form of PTSD because in the last six months she'd nearly been killed twice, never mind the fact that she practically dropped out of school, didn't have a real job and despite living on her own still had to rely on her parents for financial support? Never had she expected her life to turn out like this, it wasn't what she wanted for herself and as much as she tried to separate herself from her secret identity her instincts wouldn't let her.
She had turned her back on those who needed her one to many times already and despite the multiple attempts on her life, she still powered up and tried to be the good guy. The worst part? Fiona hated herself for it.
"I don't know what you expected me to say Zia," she murmured quietly, looking away. It was uncharacteristic of her, she never averted her gaze but the ginger hadn't much felt like herself lately. Her fingers traced the lid of her latte and she sighed, lifting her eyes to look at the lavender haired woman. "I'm trying desperately to hold on to the thinning thread of normalcy while the city is falling apart due to some terrorist war that really doesn't have anything to do with me." Her tone was harsher than she intended and her shoulders sagged as she sighed, pushing her bangs from her face.
"Sorry," she mumbled, clearing her throat before trying to bring the topic back to something easy. "Yeah, got a flat downtown. It's small but nice."

Zia apparently hadn't expected her sarcastic quip to be taken so harshly since as she watched Fiona look away and murmur, her own hazel eyes going wide. For as often as Zia liked to posit she was an advocate of the displaced and victimized civilian population, she easily forgot she was a little out of touch with it.
"Oh, Fi, I didn't mean it that way!" She burst out, apparently having no consideration for the fact they were in a public place, and assaulted Fiona with an uninvited hug.
"I'm sorry! Oh, I'm sure it's nice," Zia was going to stay in uncomfortably close proximity until she was pushed away, unfortunately, "You should invite me over sometime to see how nice it is, clearly."

If Fi had been feeling like herself, and clearly she was not, Zia's comment wouldn't have been met with an emotional outburst but her nerves were fried and the ginger was perpetually tired. She met Zia's hug with a proper one of her own, hand sliding across the other woman's back and squeezing tightly. It'd been a while since she'd had a good hug.
She let go, a bit reluctantly, and pulled back. "You still give good hugs I see," she joked, laughing. "And definitely, I'd really like that. I haven't really," she paused, swallowing the lump in her throat while she tried to figure out a way to say what she wanted without sounding completely pathetic. "Haven't really had any one over, you know me. Just barely got the place looking the way I want. Couldn't have visitors over until then y'know?" There she sounded more normal.

"Yeah!" Zia nodded, and sounded almost encouraging. This was a nice excuse and a nicer train of thought, and one she preferred over whatever the reality was.
Destiny City was a horrible place, all things considered, and whatever semblance of normalcy was nice whether she was just convincing herself this was totally the way things were or not. What it came down to was they should spend more time together, and less time being traumatized by their surroundings separately, obviously.
She scribbled something off a business card and hastily wrote something new in a blank space and shoved it at Fiona. "This is my new number. You should call me sometime!" She said in a weird tone that sounded more like a demand before she gathered her things and started making her way out.
"Thanks for the snack!"

Normalcy was something she desperately needed and if spending more time with Zia would help her achieve that, then she was all over it. She happily accepted the business card as it was shoved her way and nodded. "Oh, definitely," she promised pocketing the card. Once she had a minute to sit and play on her phone, the number would be added immediately.
She frowned, briefly, as Zia quickly gathered her belongings and made to leave. Part of her had hoped they'd be able to chat more but she knew how busy the lavender haired woman was. Fi had plenty of things to do herself, like proper job hunting.
"Any time! I'll see you soon," she replied once she gained her composure. A bright smile was on her lips as she waved, snagging her latte and making her way to a table.
It was nice to catch up.
