Ian Rahal-Nazari did not make friends.

He made acquaintances.

Truth be told, he wasn't particularly good at making long-lasting, impressionable friends, the sort of friends that you told everything to, the sort of friend you could call late at night and just talk to for hours on end.

He made acquaintances, co-workers, casual friends that you meetup for coffee for but don't actually know anything about. It had something to do, perhaps, with the fact that he was mostly a very private person, but Ian also knew that he was not the sort of type to stay in one place very long.

And that included friends.

Which was why he didn't go out searching for anyone, though he supposed he could have asked someone to help out with some of his training. Ian stood on the practice fields, the sun beating down on his bare arms (he'd swapped his coat for a teeshirt instead; it was too hot for long sleeves), dagger held in one hand as he attempted to throw it at the nearest target.

The knife bounced off the target's side and flopped uselessly to the ground.

"Damn it."

Shiloh, on the other hand, made plenty of friends.

They weren’t necessarily the deepest of relationships, and those he actually counted as close or intimate had unfortunately dwindled to zero with his arrival at Deus, but Shiloh was a friendly guy and he was working hard to rebuild the cozy support group of friends he’d left behind.

He picked up on things quickly, subtle nuances about people that made them easy to read and understand, and he genuinely enjoyed getting to know people, and learning their quirks. It was nice to make people happy, and to make them laugh. Those sorts of things were bright and wonderful, and they kept the darkness at bay. More than ever, Shiloh needed that here. The darkness at home at been scary, but here it was terrifying. Cowering under the bed sheets wasn’t going to cut it here.

So he needed friends, and he needed training. And when he stumbled onto the practice fields, and found the potential for both, the man was enthused.

Perfect.

Haruka had been summoned into his fingers, and he looped her chains through them as he approached Ian carefully, waiting for him to throw the dagger so as to not accidentally become the new target. It was strange to see the other hunter outside of his jacket; in fact it had been strange to meet all of the hunters in the casual wear that the heat brought out. Shiloh himself was looking particularly stunning (see: not at all stunning) in a t-shirt and shorts, and a pair of white runners with, incidentally, bright blue and duck patterned laces. He really, really wasn’t that into ducks, but the shoelaces had caught his eye back home, and they’d been far too hilarious to pass up.

“I’m not sure it’s supposed to do that,” Shiloh chuckled, eyeing the knife on the ground as he settled in next to Ian.

Ian, who wasn't' paying much attention to his surroundings, did not notice the figure standing at the edge of the training field until after he spoke, and Ian jumped a little, twisting around when he heard the voice.

A smile spread across his face. "Shyduck," he said lightly, and his gaze flickered from the teeshirt to the shorts to the shoes, his brows lifting at the latter. "Cute," he said, tilting his head, and Ian grinned, moving towards the target to pick his knife up from the ground, curling it around his fingers. He walked back over to Shiloh, his gait loping and careless.

"And I'm relatively sure it's not supposed to either," he said, and sat down on the grass, idly swinging the dagger. "I'm not sure if it's my aim, or if it's just Naomi being stubborn, but I can't seem to throw straight today."

{ Your inability to perform admirably has nothing to do with me. } came the irritated sounding voice, Naomi positively swelling with annoyance inside of his mind. { Kindly don't associate your lack of abilities with myself. }

Ian ignored this, returning his attentions to much more interesting matters.

"So," he said to Shiloh. "What brings you out here?"

His gaze moved to the shoelaces again, almost contemplatively.

“Shyduck,” Shiloh repeated, shaking his head gently. “That’s really gonna stick, huh?”

But he was grinning back at Ian, and struck a little pose when the other hunter called him cute. He’d never said he had any knack for fashion; he just wore what he liked, and what was comfortable. At least he’d left the boots at home today, because shorts and boots were definitely an ensemble he had worn before and would wear again. He watched Ian retrieve his weapon, Haruka still coiled in his hands, her jaws swinging gently at his side. She was surprisingly silent at the moment but he could feel her waiting at the edge of his mind, as though she had something to say, and was just waiting to say it. As he surveyed the training field, he had an idea of what the competitive weapon would suggest.

When Ian sat down, Shiloh followed and then it came, a disappointed sigh in his head. There would be time for games later, he mentally assured her, before turning to Ian.

“This is definitely gonna sound crazy but… I came here to practice.” He smirked cheekily at the Mist hunter. “But it’s so hot…”

He let the chains roll from his hands and onto the grass as he flopped onto his backside. “So hooooot,” he whined.

Ian turned his head, giving Shiloh an amused sort of smile. "It could be worse," he said lightly. "I could be calling you a much less pleasant nickname like hey you or that one guy. Besides," he added loftily. "Shyduck seems just about right for someone like you."

His eyes flickered towards the other hunter's weapon, eyeing it with curiosity. He hadn't seen one like that before, not yet at least, and the weapon's gaping, toothy maw was open in a snarl.

A low laugh escaped Ian's throat. "Oh, did you now," he said, nudging his shoulder against Shiloh's, a note of clear amusement evident in his voice. "You came to the practice field to actually practice? I'm stunned."

Reaching out, Ian let his fingers run briefly over the links of the weapon, not exactly touching it, but hovering an inch or so above. His gaze moved to Shiloh again, and the reply of "yes you are" almost left his throat, but Ian swallowed it back just in time because he was not going to frighten off someone who was actually willing to spend time with him.

Not yet, at least. Ian cleared his throat a little.

"What exactly is this?" he asked, gesturing to Shiloh's weapon.

ian what are you doing why are you such a weirdo oh my gosh I am so sorry

“I guess it’s better than ‘hey you’,” Shiloh conceded, “And yeah, ‘s what it’s for, isn’t it? Practice? Though I gotta admit, now that I’m here, all that moving around doesn’t sound super exciting.”

He stifled a yawn, and propped himself up onto his elbows, glancing from Ian to his weapon lying in the grass beside him.

“That, is Haruka. As for what exactly Haruka is, well, she’s a bit complex.”

[ Shiloh! I am not, you are just too simple sometimes! Not my fault! ]

He laughed before continuing. “She says she isn’t. But I liken her to like, uh, a bear trap on a chain. See here? Her jaws are hinged and they snap closed when fully extended. I haven’t exactly mastered the technique yet.”

[ Shiloooh, you’ll get there! But we should actually practice, on things that aren’t the clothes you are too lazy to pick up! I wasn’t made for that! Shiloh, let’s play! ]

Running his hand over the smooth metal, he patted the top of the weapon’s ‘head’. In a bit, he thought, now was sitting time. Or lying time rather, as he lounged on his side and grinned up at Ian. He picked up Haruka’s head, and held it up to him, making snapping motions with her jaws like a puppet.

“See?”

"Yes, well," said Ian, a little dryly. "I started practicing, but it's too hot and Naomi was being...insolent."

{ I beg your pardon. }

A smile quirked at the corners of Ian's lips. Haruka was most definitely complex, but at the same time the weapon was so unusual that Ian was relatively certain that Haruka, at least, wasn't as stubborn as his own weapon was, if he was judging by the affectionate tone of Shiloh's voice.

"A...bear trap," said Ian musingly, glancing down at the chains again. "So basically you throw her around and try to latch onto whoever is unfortunate enough to be your opponent?"

Laughing, Ian leaned back, putting a hand out in mock fear. "She's pretty intense, I've gotta admit," he said, sweeping back his slightly damp hair, which had fallen across his forehead in annoying strands. "I just have this," he added, plucking up Naomi where he'd dropped her in the grass and dangling her in front of Shiloh's nose.

"Unfortunately, she's not very impressive at the moment."

{ Neither are you. }

Ian stifled a smile.

ian is just stupid let's go with that
PostPosted: Tue Sep 03, 2013 9:23 pm

“Something like that,” Shiloh grinned, setting the weapon down. “Though I wouldn’t say she’s insolent… It’s just not as easy as you’d think to throw a chain. It’s hard, sort of like a lasso but it’s not smooth at all. I’ll get it though.”

He watched as Ian lifted Naomi, examining the dagger suddenly in front of his face and reaching out tentatively to touch Naomi with his fingers. He looked past her to Ian, staring as the man brushed back his hair. Shiloh’s own hair was a messily pulled back into a ponytail, the lengths that escaped it sticking to his face in the heat. Following Ian’s lead, he blew at his bangs, hoping to dislodge them from his face.

“She’s not half-bad at all, man. I sure as hell wouldn’t want her stuck in me. Do you guys not get along?”

Ian’s tone had made him curious, he didn’t seem particularly proud of the weapon. Shiloh thought Naomi was pretty cool, though he didn’t envy the task of learning to throw a knife. Not that his was particularly easier, but at least should throwing fail, he could just bash a monster’s head in.

"I don't know if I'd be able to do it," said Ian, eyeing Haruka's chain again and wondering how much effort it would take to throw something as heavy and unbalanced as that particular weapon was. Still, it was a fascinating weapon nonetheless, and Ian felt the tiniest p***k of jealousy before he shoved it away quickly.

Ian's eyes followed the line of Shiloh's arm and then his fingers as he reached out, smiling a little. "She won't bite...unlike yours, I think," he added, with a teasing grin. "Not in the physical sense, at least, though I'm not sure I can guarantee she won't bite in the mental sense..."

{ That is a terrible analogy. I do not bite. }

A half sort of smile tugged at Ian's lips. "Let's just say Naomi and I are, ah...different thinkers," he said lightly, and inside of his head, he heard her make a sound of disapproval. "We're getting there, slowly, but it'll be a long road, I think."

{ Only because you make it as such. }

He didn't want to think about Naomi. Ian gestured instead towards Shiloh's pale hair. "So what's with that?" he asked, the grin back in place. "Just for fun, or some other reason?" He blew out a long breath. "Interesting weapon, interesting hair color...you're all sorts of curious, I've gotta say."

“I bet you could,” Shiloh said, though he instantly looked a bit crestfallen. It seemed Haruka drew the line at being shared, and while she assured him mentally that Ian seemed very nice, he wasn’t allowed to throw her. “Haruka says no, but I’d let you try.”

“But, I’m glad my fingers are safe! Haruka is very good, she only bites when told… Though sometimes she can get a little over-playful. I’ve gotten myself bitten once or twice already that way.”

[ You’re too clumsy. ]

“That too,” he answered aloud, before he remembered that he was with someone. Despite the fact that everyone had weapons, Shiloh was still too new to know what was commonplace or not on the island, talking to one’s weapon included. “I’m sure you guys will get there! It’s like you were doing, you just gotta practice until your brainwaves sync up or something. I figure the only reason why Haruka and I got on so well is that there isn’t a whole lot going on up here… Plenty of space for her!”

He knocked against his head with his hand gently, before laughing again. “That’s kind of you to say, but hah, me, interesting, you must have lead a pretty boring life up until now, huh?”

Shiloh teased him back, playing idly with the strands of hair that had fallen loose around his face. He blew out a sigh again, it was hot, and as much as he loved his hair, it only made things hotter.

“It’s just for fun,” he said, getting to his feet. “Though it’s not very fun right now, ugh, so hot.”

Then he pulled his shirt off, wiping his face with it before tossing it on the ground. He kicked his shoes off as well, before flopping back on the grass next to Ian.

“Much better.”

Ian laughed. "I'm sure she said no for a very good reason. I'm not sure hunter weapons are meant to be shared, after all, but it was a nice thought. And you're too nice," he added, grinning slightly. "I'm sure I'd make a fool of myself if I even tried, so it's better that I don't."

He gave Shiloh a playful wink and shook his head. "I haven't cut myself on Naomi just yet, but even so there are the...whatever they're called, our shield things, that protect us from mortal peril, at least for a certain amount of time. I have, however, dropped her on my foot, which was both painful and stupid, and mildly embarrassing."

Glancing back up at Shiloh, Ian gave a snort. "There's plenty in your head," he said loftily. "And all of it's interesting, at least to me."

He reached out a hand and tugged playfully at a strand of the pale pink hair, Ian's smile growing wider. "I like it," he said, and let go. "It's cute, and it fits you."

Ian had been going to say something else, but Shiloh was proving to be a very unhelpful distraction. Ian's gaze flickered first to the discarded shirt and then back to Shiloh and his now very bare chest, arching a brow and feeling this was entirely unfair of him.

Well, I was definitely right about the interesting' part. Ian gave another laugh, shaking his head, shifting positions so that he was sitting sideways beside the other, leaning back on his hands. "How do you like it here on the island so far?"

“Ow, I can't imagine that being very fun,” Shiloh agreed, thinking that dropping any sort of weapon on one’s foot would be painful, let alone a hefty dagger like Naomi.

“You know, really, you’re the one that’s too nice,” he said, smiling as Ian pulled playfully at his hair, and complimented him yet again. He brushed the man’s hand away with a laugh, and pushed the hair back from his face, tousling it haphazardly with his fingers.

“I like it well enough, even better now that the sun’s out, even if it is way too hot. It’s like beach weather, except with that thing in the water, I think swimming is out of the question.”

He made a sour face, as though he couldn’t believe he was on an island and he couldn’t swim, and shifted so he was lying on his stomach, fishing around for his shirt to use as a headrest. Finding it, he tucked it under his chin, and tilted his head to glance curiously at Ian.

“Although I guess being here isn’t exactly supposed to be a vacation. What about you? Do you like it here?”

There was something terribly cute and interesting about Shiloh, and Ian was trying very hard not to let it get to his head. He watched the other for a short moment, a smile playing at the corners of his lips before he realized that he was, in fact, letting it go to his head and cleared his throat a little.

"Nah," he said. "I'm not really all that nice at all."

His tone was deliberately casual, but there was a strange edge to it, an odd tinge, but Ian seemed not to notice, idly tugging at a strand of grass beside him. He glanced down at Shiloh, who was now on his stomach, and smiled a little.

"What, don't want to swim with something vaguely terrifying, tentacled, and enormous?" he asked teasingly. "Next time we'll find you somewhere else to swim, somewhere that isn't something to land us in mortal peril."

Deciding he was just going to roll with the flow, Ian shifted positions so that he was lying on his back beside Shiloh, though stretched out in the opposite direction, his head a short distance away from the other's. He slid his hands beneath his head and linked his fingers together, staring up at the sky.

"...haven't decided yet," he said finally, after a long moment. "It's definitely an improvement over my previous...er, situation, and there have been some definitely interesting things to happen - as well as interesting people," he added, a smirk touching Ian's lips.

"But, well..." his fingers felt warm against the grass beneath him. "I don't particularly fit in anywhere, I suppose, so we'll see if this place is any different."

He'd said more than he'd intended, Ian snapping his jaw abruptly shut and feeling mildly stupid.

“Nice enough.”

Shiloh wasn’t really picky about what people were, any sort of company was preferable to none and he’d fallen into nice and not-so-nice crowds before. But people were just people, and far be it from him to judge anyone negatively, if he wasn’t willing to consider himself with the same standards. He wondered vaguely what made Ian consider himself not nice, but he wasn’t about to press. It was probably something that only Ian could see, after all it didn’t seem like the guy was particularly confident. No, that wasn’t right, Shiloh thought. The guy was confident, he’d just been honest about his shortcomings thus far. Now he was a little curious, but the subject had changed and Shiloh let it go, laughing at Ian’s teasing tone.

“Naw, I’d rather not take my chances. I do quite enjoy living, you know. But somewhere else would be nice… You know there’s a pool in the cafeteria?”

He watched the man stretch out beside him, his own thoughts a bit oblivious to the circumstances, and their closeness. They were just two dudes enjoying a beautiful day, and he mimicked Ian’s pose, rolling back onto his back beside the other hunter.

“Home would have to be pretty bad for fighting monsters to be an improvement, but I hear you, it definitely has its improvements.” No one yelling at him was one of them, but it was still early yet. But Ian’s next admission caught him off-guard, and Shiloh sat up a bit, staring at him. “What do you mean, you seem to fit in just fine here, everyone liked you at the star party! But… I guess this is like the island of misfit toys, so it’s probably best to take that with a grain of salt.”

He grinned widely at him.

He wasn't entirely certain about the whole nice enough thing, mostly because Ian was relatively sure that nice enough did not necessarily mean good enough - and while he appreciated Shiloh's cheerful positivity on this particular subject, he had to wonder how he would react when he learned he was not as nice as he pretended to be.

Ian swallowed the bitter negativity as he rose, pushing it back down again. He turned his head to look sideways at the other, brows raised in amusement, their heads only a short distance away.

"A pool in the cafeteria?" he repeated with a laugh. "What on earth is a pool doing in the cafeteria?"

There was a small pause.

"Well, I'm sure that's an improvement on the food, actually..."

Still laughing, he felt, rather than saw, Shiloh shift positions, the two of them now lying side by side on their backs. He smiled a little to himself, deliberately ignoring Naomi's disdainful commentary in his head, and decided to just enjoy the fact that it was a nice day outside and he was with someone who didn't mind being with him and who he didn't mind being with.

"Home was...well, it wasn't home, let's put it that way," said Ian dryly, closing his eyes briefly against the sun and exhaling slowly. "It was...well..."

He was talking too much again. Ian opened his eyes, only to find that Shiloh was half sitting up and looking at him.

"What?" said Ian, slightly taken aback as he propped himself up on his elbows. "Oh...well, I'm not...entirely certain people did...well, at any rate..."

He was unusually flustered. This sort of cheerful, untainted positivity was not something he was used to, and it was catching him slightly off guard. Ian lay back down on the grass and tried to keep himself looking as normal as possible.

"Misfits, that's certainly right," he said, reaching up a hand to curl his fingers around the end of Shiloh's ponytail and give it a small, playful tug. "You with your pink hair, me with my distinct sense of direction (except not)..."
