Peyton wasn't used to the sun, not anymore. It was odd, working out, training, with the sun beating down on her. There was sweat plastering her bangs to her forehead, and dust had settled on her legs from having kicked up a storm of it while working at a training dummy. She looked a mess, but quite frankly she didn't give a damn. It wasn't as if there was anyone on the island she was trying to impress. At least not in that respect.

There was a scattering of splinters littering the floor around her, along with a few random bits of dummy. Apparently she'd already destroyed one faux opponent, and she was working on another.

She enjoyed training, but aside from that, she was looking to keep herself busy. The more she did, the less she had time to think, and the less she would dwell on the unstable state of the island, Clarice and Clerise's deaths, or the fact that they were eating MRE's morning none and night.

The sun was a welcome addition to their happy island home, a literal bright spot in the darkness of limited power, no portals, and endless MREs. Parts of it were almost painfully familiar to Evan--mostly the MREs--but the lush, tropical jungle was about as far away from the arid desert as one could get. The heat actually served to put him in a better mood, a rare and unfamiliar thing since their return from the land of memory. He practically jogged out to the training field, sans coat or scarf, to burn off some of the excess energy.

He noticed Peyton out there and for the first time in a long time, he didn't feel like tearing her apart on sight like he had when they were all sick and the memory of betrayal was still fresh. He didn't even feel like punching her until she stopped moving, like he might have every time he heard the sound of her voice. No, his enmity had turned into somewhat aggressive apathy and finally burned away completely in the heat of the sun.

That's not to say that he had forgotten why he had been angry at her in the first place. Now, at least, he knew she wasn't a direct threat. He had beaten her fairly easily once and was confident that he could do so again. So confident, in fact, that he thought nothing of summoning his weapon, coming up behind her, and smashing the head right off of the dummy she was using to train.

"Playtime's over," he growled down at her with a grin that was more a baring of teeth than an expression of friendliness. Maybe the heat that he thought was making him feel good was only making him a little more outwardly crazy.

<Peyton!>

The dainty Sun startled, jerking away from the dummy as the head exploded off it's body, and she wiped around what remained of the thing to put it between herself and whatever had cleaved through it's neck. Evan stood grinning down at her, voice little better then a feral growl as he threatened her. Challenge was too gentle a word for it.

For the first time since they'd made it back to the island after the cruise she was legitimately scared of what he might do. Even when he'd had her dangling in this very same spot she hadn't thought he'd hurt her. Not significantly.

Now she wasn't sure.

It had been so easy to imagine that maybe things were getting better. That he'd finally forgiven her, and they could move past all the strain and bitterness and animosity that had formed between them, but looking up at him now, at that half crazed smile, she felt as if nothing had changed and no time had passed. As if they'd just stepped back through the portal.

<I know you love a challenge, but you need to be careful.>

She didn't need Warrick's caution to remind her of how their last spar had gone. Slender fingers curled tightly against the metal rings that circled them, and backed away from the dummy, into open ground. "What's up, Evan?" Her voice was even, as if she were talking a man off a ledge.

"Up, half pint?" Evan bit out, no affection in the way the nickname was spat out like a curse. "Nothing's up. This is the training field; we are training." Training as evidenced by the way that he only hit Peyton a little bit as opposed to using the same kind of force he had just used on the dummy.

This wasn't good. Evan was livid and Peyton didn't have a clue as to what had sparked this sudden violent mood swing, but she got the impression that maybe she had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She was wide eyed and alarmed as he came at her, and she brought her hands up to deflect Gir's broad edge but the force behind the swing was enough to force her back, and as metal screamed along metal she knew that blade would bit into her arm when it slide free of the spikes on her knuckles.

It did, and she gave a hiss as she jerked back and away from him, swinging, but with no real aim to it. A blind swipe to keep him at bay as she tried to get her barrings. "What the ********, Evan?" He'd come out of no where, she hadn't been ready.

Evan tsked and shook his head in disappointment as Peyton backed away. He stepped towards her, very deliberately stalking her around the training field. "What?" Evan echoed back at her. "You can chip away at dummies all day, but you'll run and hide from a live opponent? Come on," he taunted, lashing out at Peyton again, "fight back."

Correction. She would back away from a crazed looking ex-marine with a giant ******** sword who seemed utterly hellbent on her destruction.

There was a very large difference.

He did have a point though, Peyton wasn't usually the sort that cowered in the face of eminent danger. His command made her stiffen, startling her out of the fear that was making her all but useless, and she fell into a lower crouch before charging at the much larger Sun hunter.

Past the wicked blade of the broadsword and right on into his personal space with one tiny fist cocked back. She swung at him, all her strength thrown into the punch, and she felt it connect with his side with a satisfying jolt.

Evan wanted her to fight. She would fight.

Evan snarled, still smiling, as Peyton's hit connected, pain lancing brightly through the point of impact. Yes, this was what he wanted: someone and something to play with. Blood given and taken, life-affirming and purposeful. This made him happy in a way he couldn't begin to describe in words, only that it hearkened back to a time when hurting together--even because of each other--formed stronger bonds.

This was--necessary, yes. A breaking of things to make them better. Evan flipped his weapon so that the spiked padlock on its hilt faced down at Peyton. He only managed a glancing blow, but it was enough to make the runes running down the length of the blade glow with deadly intent.

The lock was just another extension of Evan's weapon, and she gave a hiss as it bit into her arm, but she was already moving, sweeping back and around Gir''s dark blade. If he was looking for a serious fight, then she would give him one. ******** holding back, he'd come at her with intent to hurt, and she would repay that motive in kind.

A feint to the left brought her back around in front of him, and before she'd even planted her feet her small fist was streaking upwards.

Face hits were taboo if you were just having a friendly match, but this had moved beyond friendly. Dark spikes were aimed at his jaw. She would make him see stars.

Ultimately, it was his own damn fault for reminding her to move more against bigger and stronger opponents. The dim sense of satisfaction at having his advice heeded was literally knocked out of him as his head snapped back from the force of Peyton's punch.

She was quick, he would give her that, but she also had the misfortune of using a weapon that put her far too close to her target. It was easy enough to shove Peyton off of him, putting enough distance between the two of them for him to be able to swing upwards with the Fear-sheathed teeth of his blade.

A hand to the chest had Peyton reeling backwards and she had to work to regain her balance. Of course had she any idea what he was planning she would have let her self fall, crawled away from him as fast as she could.

But she didn't know. She couldn't see it coming.

Gir bit into her side and she screamed as the force of the blow took her off her feet and sent her crashing into the dirt. Teeth biting into her side, tearing at flesh and shield, drinking in the fear.

She didn't stay down. An agile little flip brought her back to her feet, and she dug her toe into the packed earth before streaking forward again. Lower this time, she'd use her small stature to her advantage. Swiping at his hip as she ducked under his arm.

The part of Evan that was consumed by the need for pain--to give and take--reveled in the shock of the impact as his weapon collided with her flesh, and the way she seemed to fly through the air, and, most of all, her scream before she hit the ground. He had thought that that might have been enough to put Peyton down and found himself pleasantly surprised when she picked herself back up and threw herself at him. Maybe he should have expected it; they were Suns, after all, and getting back up was what they did.

It was good to see, too, that she was learning to use her strengths against him. Her next attack brought her almost too close for retaliation, knocking him that essential step off-balance, and his blade only caught the barest edge of her shield.

A tiny nick, barely a scratch. Peyton didn't even register it as she kept moving around him. That was the key, keep movie, keep low. Make herself as hard a target to hit as humanly possible while still maintaining some manner of offensive attack.

She swiped at him again, his opposite hip this time, before bouncing back and away from him. It gave him the range he needed, but she couldn't keep up the fast paced barrage of attacks indefinitely. She needed to back up, to breath. It wasn't smart, but distance gave her the illusion of safety.

It was a lie.

Peyton's attacks were hard to keep up with, and his hips stung where she hit him, but he knew better than to lash out blindly. He couldn't match her speed. All he could do was move to try to minimize the damage and wait, patiently, for her to screw up. He had superior strength and stamina on his side, to say nothing of the combat training he had received before coming to the island.

It was almost unfair, really, but it worked to Evan's advantage. The second Peyton stepped far enough away, he was right there pressing his own attack, the teeth of his blade level with her shoulder as he tried to take out one of her arms.
