The wraiths had been acting up for too long. At first they had been a minor nuisance.

Such had quickly escalated.

Their temperament had worsened over the months. They had attacked civilians. They attacked Knights and Senshi and Negas—and worst of all, Dark Mirror Senshi.

Remarque had tried to save the wraiths before—tried to protect them, even in their wayward state. Tried to shove them back through mirrors and into Mirrorspace.

It had grown tedious all too quickly. He had shattered more wraiths than he cared to admit.

But at the price of his energy? Of other members of the Court?

He felt no guilt. All he wanted now was resolution, and given her position he figured Leto was likeminded.

Given the recent turn of events, he expected it.

The deterioration of the alliance Ares and the Negaverse had set in place did not surprise him, though he was not pleased by it. He might never have really gotten along with them or the agents, but that didn't mean he had overlooked the brute strength and experience they possessed. Even if they were expected to remain on friendly terms, he trusted them less now than ever.

With Ares gone and the Negaverse stepping away from them, they were floundering.

Standing in Mirrorspace, Remarque looked at a set of giant, intricately designed doors. The place confounded him on many levels, and the constant shifting was deceptive and unpredictable. He'd spent hours here and never felt any closer to knowing a damned thing about it. Ares' throne room seemed to be the only constant, and even then he rarely found himself there.

Tonight, he was set to meet Leto. Tonight, they were going to try and solve a problem that never should have existed in the first place.

Hands on his hips, he ignored the many mirrors. As much as he might ordinarily love to preen, he hadn't been sleeping and he'd worn himself thin. He knew he looked tired because he felt tired.

Which meant he had the pleasure of staring blankly at the unfamiliar, ornate doors. While Mirrorspace was constantly shifting, rearranging itself, the doors had been there since he arrived. Which, admittedly, hadn't really been all that long ago. Time just felt like it was passing differently, either because it was this place or because he was too tired to care.

He didn't know where the doors would lead or even if it would still be there by the time they started searching. All he did know was but he was sure they were about to find out.

It had been over 4 months. 21 weeks, if you wanted to be more exact. And quite honestly, Leto had had enough. After her rather unpleasant meeting with Laurelite and the alliance falling apart... The Dark Mirror Court was put in a position of helplessness. They had no leader, they had no true allies, and their Wraiths were attacking everyone and anyone in sight, including Dark Mirror Senshi.

It was time for something to be done.

The second her mirrored communicator went off, Leto snapped it open in her hands to receive Remarque's message. For once, it seemed the pair were on the same page. With a grin, she moved towards the closest mirror and like it was second nature, she stepped through it to stop in Mirror Space.

"We need to ******** fix this," was all she said as she stepped up behind Remarque and joined him in staring at the giant doors in front of them.

"Do you think something's in there?" She added, her arms crossing over her chest. The expression on her face was a mixture of worry, anger and betrayal and there was nothing better than those three things to fuel the Senshi of Camouflage.

Remarque's gaze didn't slip from the door as he replied, "No idea. I can't ever tell in this place."

He wasn't about to ask for help, either.

"But we're out of options. Nothing in Destiny City is helping us. No senshi, no knights, no agent of the Negaverse—none of them know anything. Ares is a possibility, of course. She might know something. Maybe she's known for a while. She certainly picked a convenient time to haul herself out of here, don't you think?"

The thought had long since wormed its way into his mind, but there wasn't much accusation in his voice. He was angry, but it wasn't directed at anyone in particular. "But I figure this problem isn't going to find itself."

Unfolding his arms from across his chest, he reached for the cold handle of one of the doors and pulled it open. The effort was rewarded with little more than a hollow creak and a long hallway.

It was disappointing, that there wasn't some answer right there.

But, if it had been that easy, they wouldn't still be having an issue.

"Was it always like this?" he asked of the smoky walls around them. There was no telling how long this was going to take, but he wasn't going to do it in silence. He nodded for Leto to step ahead while he held the door, grimacing when he realized how far the hallway seemed to stretch before them. "Mirrorspace, I mean. Seems like it would be pretty easy to lose yourself in here. Why is it always changing, do you know?"
PostPosted: Fri Aug 30, 2013 8:14 pm

"I think this happened because Ares is gone. Without someone to control them..." Her voice trailed off, followed by a heavy sigh.

It wasn't like Leto to be so quiet.

"I know you guys don't know Ares like I do. But I promise you, she didn't do this on purpose. She didn't know." There was a sadness to her voice. Her Queen and her Court were everything to her and without Ares, things were falling apart. Including Leto- she needed the guidance and direction and without the Negaverse Alliance - well, s**t was hitting the proverbial fan.

When Remarque pulled the doors open, Leto wasn't entirely sure what she was expecting them to find. She also hadn't realized she was holding her breath. She exhaled, long and slow, and took a few steps into the expansive hallway, taking a look around.

"From the day Ares baptized us, it's been like this," she murmured as her fingers dragged along the smokey walls. "Maybe to make sure that if there was a breach, we could contain it. Or to hide things. Secrets?" To be honest, Leto didn't have the slightest clue- she never asked.

Apparently she should've asked more questions when Ares enlightened her.

Leto had a point Remarque didn't often consider; she did know Ares. She had known her for longer than almost all of the other Dark Mirror Senshi. She had spent time with her—before any of this. Before the Dark Mirror Court ever existed. There had never really been any intimacy between him and the queen; it was rare, if ever that he had spoken to her without it being some important, official Court business.

He followed after her. "Wouldn't surprise me. I have no idea what's back here," he admitted. 'Here' being wherever Mirrorspace decided to deposit him. "I assumed Ares would know. I don't know if I thought Ares made this place or just found it. It's strange, that it never occurred to me to ask."

As they walked, the hallway maintained much of its original image; shards of mirrors ranging in size had begun to speckle the walls, and every now and then a strange, distant crunching noise echoed down the corridor. Remarque had paused to listen when a large mirror shard flashed from next to him; there was the briefest glimpse of a shadow, though it was gone almost as soon as it had appeared. In the time it took for Remarque to register movement, there was nothing but his own reflection.

And another, louder crunch.

His head tilted, as if to acknowledge the sound. There were doors that he could see, only the walls and mirrors. He reached out a hand to the one in front of him, tapping on the cool surface. There was no reaction, and he was quick to dismiss the sight as some side effect of sleep deprivation.

He forced himself to turn away and move once more to Leto's side. He said nothing of the noise either; the most he could do was ask if she had heard it or if it had just been in his head. Realistically he should have utilized the silence to try and pinpoint a direction of the supposed noise, but the silence was almost more unnerving than the oddities. "I lost a wraith earlier. It turned on me. I know Lesath's attacked her, twice. I don't know what condition her shards are in. Do you still have all of yours or were yours fussing too much, too?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 01, 2013 8:31 am

"She was a Parallel Senshi before she was ever a Dark Mirror Senshi. She could always mirror walk. Makes me wonder if MirrorSpace was always like this, or if it was different before she changed."

Leto's movement stopped when she too heard the first crunch. Then another, louder. Her eyebrows furrowed and she waited for Remarque to catch up to her. When he moved to her side, she turned to face him. "We have no idea what we're up against in here, if we find anything at all. I hope you're prepared to die for your cause if it comes to it, blondie." She offered him a smile before continuing to move through the hallway.

This was probably the most that the two of them had ever gotten along.

"God damnit, I didn't realize we were getting that low... I've lost one of mine, it went rogue up against Wolframite and Bismuthite. You can imagine they weren't very impressed," she rolled her eyes.

Her eyes lowered as they walked, her expression one to show she was deep in thought. "Remarque..." Her voice was soft, unsure. "What if we do figure out what's going on? What if we even manage to fix it? Then what? We've lost so many Wraiths and shards, and without Ares..." Leto's fingers came up to twist through the ends of her long ponytail nervously. "I know I'm supposed to lead this Court with you, but I just... I don't really know what to do."

For the first time in years, Leto was admitting to someone that she was afraid and unsure and she was showing weakness.

Death wasn't really an option for Remarque. It never had been. In all of his time as a senshi, he had never thought that he might die. It was quick to brush off such a concern, though not so quick to dismiss Leto. Her tone struck Remarque as odd, and he turned to look at the her. He had never heard that tone from Leto, so it took too long for him to process. "There's a lot of 'what's' there. You're thinking too much about it."

Scheming, planning ahead—that was fine. When you had an inkling of an idea as to what you could expect. This? There was nothing. There was no textbook, no manual to assist them. Just one foot in front of the other.

He continued, "When we find out what's causing this and when we fix it, then we'll figure out what comes next. There are too man options to make a solid plan. So let's just focus on not dying, mmkay? We'll be fine." He offered a smile, though his gaze soon drifted back to the hallway. There had been things in the distance, though it wasn't until they had taken a few more steps that it became apparent that, joining the mirrors on the walls were doors. He slowed when they reached the first; it almost entirely blended in with the wall. It had no handle, just a small, nearly flat bar. Hinges and texture were visible, though the smoke did a fine job of concealing it.

Across the hall from that one, another door—taller, thinner, and with a cracked handle. A few yards from that, a sharply angled door greeted them.

Remarque whistled, a bit exasperated at all that Mirrorspace was offering them. It echoed down the hallway, then—silence. The crunching had stopped again. "I guess we should get started," he said, eyeing the door. "You want to pick a side and just keep looking through 'til we find something, or…?"

"Okay," was all she said in response to him with a half-hearted smile before her gaze quickly followed his. Leto groaned when she realized what exactly it was that he was looking at-- door after door after door along the walls of the hallway. Suddenly this seemed like a never-ending abyss of smoke, mirror and doors that would very quickly frustrate the everliving s**t out of her.

The groan was loud and exaggerated and echoed after Remarque's whistle. "I suppose we don't have many other options left," she said with a laugh, rubbing at the back of her neck. "You take left, I take right?" She proposed before stepping away from his side and moving towards the door on her left, trying to feel for a handle of some sort.

Hopefully their search would give them some sort of answer... Anything would be better than the nothingness they had found over the last few months.

Hopefully their search would give them some sort of answer... Anything would be better than the nothingness they had found over the last few months.

"Sounds good to me," he said, though there was nothing good about the proposition. It sounded monotonous and boring…but ultimately, necessary, and therefore not worth complaining about.

They were both prepared to be out late, both prepared to tread in unexplored corners of Mirrorspsace. Both prepared to do whatever it took to find even a shred of evidence to clear this whole thing up.

If that meant spending all night opening doors, so be it. It was better than pacing around in the park looking for anything out of the ordinary.

His hand wrapped around the gritty knob and he twisted, half expecting it to be locked. It wasn't; the knob turned easily enough, though the hinges were stuck. A little shove was all it took, though the reward certainly wasn't worth the effort. He was greeted with the sight of a blank room, not unlike the many others he had seen since joining the Dark Mirror Senshi.

He should not have expected anything else, but he should have known it wasn't going to be so easy. He poked his head in to make sure the room was clear, but nothing changed. Just four white walls. No mirrors, even. He lingered, as if expecting something to change. "One down," he muttered, though there was no satisfaction in his voice. He had time enough to pull out of the room and close the door before smoke hazed over it. In only a second, Remarque was staring at a blank wall. Knocking on it revealed no secrets and he glanced to Leto to make sure she was still there.

She was.

Along with too many ******** doors.

The sheer number was discouraging, but Remarque had no intention of letting that slow him down. He simply moved to the next door. And then the one after that. To pass the time they had simple conversation—how's life, dating, work, the best burger joint in DC…

Nothing Remarque would really remember the next morning; mostly mindless banter to keep from the overwhelming silence. The hallway was no longer so simple; there were twists and turns, smaller hallways branching out. Remarque wasn't even sure they could backtrack if they wanted to. It was twenty doors down on either side of the hall before something happened again—Mirrorspace rattled. The chinking of glass resounded through the hall, followed shortly by a deep, guttural groan. The mirrors on the wall shook—the doors cracked. Fine, hairline fractures had begun to split in the foundations, splintering from the corners across the walls and floor.

Battered doors and mirrors were not the only thing down the hall, now—something moved. At first the smoke concealed its form, but in a jerky, frantic movement, a wraith pulled itself from one mirror. Its path was unclear, though it froze in the middle of the hall and craned its long neck to stare with empty eyes at the two eternal senshi. Remarque had only to take one step towards it before it hissed and leapt through the mirror across the hall.

There was nothing comforting, either about the change in scenery or the unexpected guest, though despite the strangeness it was almost a relief. After all their searching, there was at least something. It just didn't seem like a good something.

Remarque cleared his throat in the seconds after the wraith's abrupt appearance and disappearance. "…Cute. You sure this is still such a good idea?" he asked, cracking his knuckles and looking at Leto. There was no fear in his voice, but there was certainly doubt. His gaze didn't remain on her for long; he was far too interested in the path ahead of them. He was trying to gauge if the ground was even going to support them—if the walls were going to support whatever expanse of Mirrorspace lied beyond them. His eyes were fixated on a particularly menacing crack in the wall, silently observing the smoke as it skirted across the walls only to be sucked into the cavern.

He wondered where it disappeared to—and then, wondered if he really wanted to know after all.

After the third or fourth door Leto was already fed up with this entire ordeal, and the fact that the hallways seemed to go on forever just made it all that much more painful. The empty rooms, blank everything, smoke, small talk... All of it sucked and Leto could think of 600 other things that she could be doing besides this in that very moment.

But she kept going, in and out of the empty rooms and when she had hit nearly two dozen of them something stopped her in her tracks. The floor shook under her, her right hand shooting out to grip the handle of the door next to her to steady herself as her eyes moved quickly to take in the cracks forming all around her. The groan made her cringe and she sucked in a breath when she saw something move at the end of the ********," she muttered under her breath, releasing her grip from the door handle. "That is one big ******** Wraith," she added with a laugh that had just a hint of panic to it.

"Nothing I ever do is a good idea, darlin. But I've made it this far!" There was a broad grin on her face now, which was very much more like the Leto that Remarque knew. Before he could get another word in, she was moving forward- and carelessly at that. She could feel the ground cracking with every step that she took, the smoke swirling around her and seemingly flitting in and of mirrors.

Leto cooed into the darkness, "Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere MirrorWraith.... Come out and play, won't you?"

Remarque blinked, staring at where Leto had been and then to where she was going. He wasn't one to be left behind, so it took only a second before he was moving after Leto. He was not necessarily one to throw caution into the wind, but he wasn't going to let her go traversing into the darkness all alone.

Even if the ground did look incredibly unstable.

It was like playing hopscotch—except that stepping on a crack might very easily be the end of you. Picking and choosing what was safe was more difficult than Remarque would have liked to admit, but he followed after Leto with a little more care for his own life. Abnormal wraith or not, it wasn't enough to justify recklessness.

"Take it slow," he insisted of the other Dark Mirror Senshi. It didn't matter if this was unexplored territory, or if it felt like now more than ever they might be finding something—not if they died before they even got to the root of the problem.

One careful step after another and then suddenly it became clear that maybe that hadn't been the best idea. Another cracking echoed throughout the hallway; Remarque barely had time to look down before he saw the ground crumble beneath them. He had no time to grope for the wall or anything to cling to before he was falling through whatever expanse laid beyond the hallway he and Leto had been passing through.

He wasn't sure what he imagined—smoke, darkness—nothingness, maybe. It was hard to tell what was around him—them; he caught a glimpse of Leto falling near to him. All sight of her was obscured by one of the large shards of whatever strange, marble-like structure Mirrorspace was constructed out of passed between the two of them. Trying to gain his bearings was a useless endeavor; he couldn't tell up from down until he had smashed into what he assumed to be the ground—but in Mirrorspace, what was what?

Chunks of the now shattered hallway and fallen mirror panels joined him on the ground, splintering and sending debris flying through the air. His only protection was his arm, raised to cover his face, and flesh was hardly a suitable shield. He was immediately aware of sharp stinging across the underside of his right arm and a strange, piercing pain from his side—glass, but not deep enough to be anything more than a nuisance.

The real pain came from not being able to breathe.

His breath had been knocked from him on impact and he was struggling for air. The numb tingling down his spine made it difficult to sit up, though he pushed through it. Lowering his arm to see, it wasn't until he'd taken a few deep breaths that the blackness creeping into his vision faded and he could manage to look around.

Leto was his first priority—to find her and make sure she was all right.

Concern for her quickly slipped from his mind when his eyes landed on something far worse than unstable foundation.

The room they had fallen into was lit with a strange, unearthly light, and despite the rubble and smoke that had followed with their landing, he could see clear enough to realize he did not want to be there.

Mirrorwraiths of varying size were peering at the scene of destruction. There were at least a dozen, all of which seemed strangely more deformed than the usual wraith. Some were glistening—solid, bloated with energy. One in particular had caught Remarque's eye—the one they'd seen in the hallway.

It did not care for either of the Dark Mirror Senshi; it was focused on only one thing. The creature darted away from them—and into what Remarque initially mistook as a large, mutated mirror, embedded in some rubbish heap. The wraith then leapt back out, wispy and devoid of energy.

Remarque had never actually seen a wraith deposit energy, and in his current state it was strangely entrancing. He couldn’t tear his eyes away, and yet couldn’t figure out what was so damned interesting about that mirror.

Until it moved.

The ground beneath them rattled, and the chinking of glass echoed loudly through the room as the heap shifted positions. As it uncoiled it seemed to take shape—some sort of beast, larger than almost anything Remarque could have imagined. It had beady eyes, easily the size of dinner plates, that were searching the room, looking for movement.

Apparently it spotted the senshi; it stiffened and drew its head back. Its mouth was not unlike a crocodile's, filled with rows of sharp, splintered mirrors and it roared with such ferocity that mirrors fell from off the wall and the majority of the wraiths scattered.

The ringing throbbed in Remarque's ears—and knocked his breath right out of him. Again.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 01, 2013 11:53 am

Leto being... Well, Leto, she rolled her eyes in a very over-exaggerated manner when Remarque told her to take it slow. "Okay, dad," she chirped at him and waved a dismissive hand in the air. She snickered as she moved forward, watching her feet to make sure she didn't step on the cracks that were quickly forming beneath her- reminding her of the old adage 'Don't step on the crack or you'll break your mother's back.'

Or in this case, your own.

When the ground dropped out from under her feet, there was only one word that Leto managed to get out- "<******** the ground hard had her gasping for air and curling in on herself in an attempt to shield as much of her body as she could from the falling glass and crumbling ground from above. Her eyes clamped shut, and she had to do everything in her power not to cry out when glass debris shattered at her head, a fresh slice across one cheek. The impact of the fall and the loud crashing noises around her were worse than the actual cuts themselves. However when a larger chunk of the ground that they had fallen through dropped down onto one of her legs, that was when Leto screamed.

With long, deep, heavy breaths, Leto pushed herself into a sitting position and scrambled to get the heavy piece of marble off of her leg- both because it hurt like hell, and so she could find her Vice Captain to make sure he was okay.

"Remarque!?" She called out to try and locate him, looking around as she used her free leg to kick at the marble and finally setting herself free. Instead of her eyes settling on her blonde teammate, they widened at the sight of the MirrorWraiths congregating. She watched one of them, the largest, the one from the hallway above... And she cringed when it leaped back out in it's ethereal state. "That can't be good," she whispered.

As the 'mirror' that the Wraith slipped in and out of moved, Leto sucked in a breath and held it, her eyes staring into the Wraith's beady ones. A string of vulgarity spewed out of Leto's mouth as she tucked her head under her arms, mirrors shattering around her as they fell from the walls.

There was a godawful throbbing in both her head and her leg as she tried to crawl to her partner.

At worst, Remarque was dazed. He heard Leto's voice, but he couldn’t look away from the behemoth before them. Physically, he was in one piece; beyond the cuts and what would soon be bruises, his ears were ringing and he had a strange pressure deep in his chest. Breathing was becoming a bit easier, though it might have just been the adrenaline.

Time felt like it was passing differently; he tried to move a hand to brush his hair from his face but in the time it took to get his fingers to his forehead, he had taken in every last detail of the monster. It was on four legs, thin and taloned and cracked, as though its legs were buckling under its own weight. Its tail raised on the other side of the room, twitching like that of an irritated cat's.

Remarque could not look away from it until he saw movement from the corner of his eye—close to him—and even then he assumed it was another unruly wraith. He blindly searched for some sort of weapon, moving his free hand across the ground. He was hardly aware of the pain from the shards still embedded in his skin—especially when he found a good, sturdy chunk of rock to grip. He turned, prepared to hurl it at his would-be-attacker, though before he even lifted his hand from the ground he recognized Leto.

The past moment was still a bit of a haze, and while he could identify her as an ally he was reluctant to release the only weapon he had. "Leto," he called, slowly shifting positions. He wasn't sure if he was too loud or too quiet; the ringing in his ears had hardly died down.

He could worry about that later, though. Say, when there wasn't a mouth full of teeth half his size gaping at him from across the room. The monster—wraith? The giant wraith? —was croaking, now. A low, hollow sound that made Remarque's bones ache.

Forcing himself to stand was easier in concept than practice; his usual grace was gone and he stumbled over a few of the larger debris as he made his way over to Leto. He managed to make it to her—to hold out a hand to help her up—before the wraith snapped its jaws and slammed its tail against the wall nearest to it.

The movement was not enough to cause massive damage, but it was enough to remind Remarque that it was foolish to take his eyes off of the creature. "—Is this Ares'?" he asked. "Or does this look like the problem to you?" He clamped his hand around her wrist to hasten pulling her to her feet, though as a sharp sting ran down his side he was reminded that they were human and that she might be hurt. He added a hasty, "Are you all right?"

Leto stopped dead in her tracks when Remarque turned with a chunk of rock in his hand that seemed awfully like he was ready to throw it at her. She held both hands up as a precaution and grinned at him, her own way of assuring him that things were okay-- for now.

Her attention moved from Remarque back to the giant wraith that looked like it was incredibly pissed off and hungry. The sound that came out of it made Leto's skin crawl. Her wide-eyed stare was only broken by the Remarque's outstretched hand that she had to blink at to really register what was going on. Apparently she was still thrown off by the fall.

Did she hit her head?

Shaking her head to try and clear her thoughts, she gripped his wrist tightly as he hauled her to her feet. Immediately she winced as pain shot through her leg when she put weight on it, but she bit her lip and tried her best to ignore it. "I don't know, I've never seen anything like it before," she peered at the Wraith, watching it over Remarque's shoulder to ensure that it didn't catch them off-guard. "I'll be fine," she said quickly, pushing through the pain as she side-stepped him and took a few steps closer to the Wraith, talking over her shoulder at him.

"Did you see that? Did that Wraith from upstairs give it it's collected energy? Do you think that's what's been going on?"

"I don't know," Remarque replied honestly. He had really never considered it; he didn't know what was normal for wraiths. All he knew was that they gathered energy and went back to Mirrorspace. He'd almost never even seen them there. Just white walls and smoke.

Was it even possible? That one wraith could gather energy and give it to another?

…Was that enough to explain the sheer size of this thing? How long would it have had to gather energy to grow like this? —Could all wraiths get that big?

The idea alone was enough to send goosebumps along Remarque's skin; he was grateful he had the sleeves to hide them. "I guess we found our problem, though."

A small part of him was relieved that they hadn't invited the other senshi to join them; Remarque was full of confidence on all levels, but against a foe that big, how much of a chance could they stand? He had already selected its legs to be his first target; they already looked like they were ready to give out.

…The problem was just going to be getting to them. One wrong step and that wraith could crush either one of them.

But.

It was just a wraith—right?

Wraiths were fragile.

One good blow was all it would take—right?

They just needed to get close enough. Then they could worry about how the hell they were getting out of here.

He clutched the rock in his hand, rolled his shoulders, and then glanced to Leto. "Legs look weak. I'm going after them."

He didn't wait for approval; Leto had said she was fine, she was standing on her own. The longer they waited to attack, the more time this creature had to assess them—or make the first move.

Pulling his arm back, he hurled the rock with as much strength as he could. He had been aiming for the wraiths' eye, but the rock never made it that far. With speed unexpected from a creature that large, it craned its neck and snapped its mouth around the rock, crunching viciously. The rock was not the only thing that broke; a few of its teeth shattered from the action, though it didn't seem to be in any pain.

It was as much of a distraction as Remarque could provide; he hadn't stood around to watch how the wraith reacted to the rock. The second its attention was off of them, he charged forward in an attempt to cross as much distance in as little time as possible.
