"A sunburnt panduhr!" Victoria exclaimed without giving Lou an opportunity to answer. She had ran into him while wandering around the school, and had decided to approach him. After greeting him, she assaulted him with a joke from the book "List of 100 Funniest Jokes", a book she had recently found it abandoned in the fireplace of the common room in the Reaper Dorms. How careless of the person who left it there! It could have been burnt by an unknowing person, being hidden under all those logs... She thought that it might come in handy for impressing potential adopters in the future, and had rescued it.

Looking up from the book, she studied the vampire's face, wondering if the joke worked; it was joke #32, and while she had tried out jokes #1 to #31 on various random students on campus, most of them hadn't laughed at any of them, and those who laughed did it out of pity. She could feel it.

Hopefully Lou would be able to give her some honest, constructive criticism on her inability to tell jokes. And the resource she was using.

And as the punch line was delivered...

Lou somehow looked less amused than he had been when she found him, and that was quite a feat considering the vampire didn't even think he had an unhappy face. "Pipsqueak." The boil started, his hands clasping each other behind him. "Wherever did you procure that book from?" He inquired, his spiral eyes practically glaring at the cover. Lou liked jokes, and he liked clever observations, but disguising one as the other was just plain evil.

"I found it," Victoria answered, more than just a little disappointed that her joke did not get a laugh out of Lou, "Someone left it under a pile of wood in the reaper dorm's common room. It would have been reduced to ashes if I hadn't rescued it!" Finders keepers!

"Oh, oh! Another joke from the collection," She seemed determined to show Lou that she was fully capable of making him laugh. Especially with such a great list of jokes, "What is black, white, red, black, white, red, black, white, red?"

"... What were you doing sifting through wood in the reaper's dorm?" He could've said something about how the reason it had ended up in such a state was obvious, but that could wait for now.

Lou's shoulders sagged as he tried to mentally prepare himself for another 'winner'. "A panduhr after you beat the s**t out of it?"

"Oh, I was... Hanging out in one of the mirrors," Victoria smiled in a totally not creeper way, "And happened to see a student abandon the poor book in the fireplace... I felt sorry for the book." So she adopted it.

"That's actually really close, Sir Lou!" She beamed, impressed that he managed to make such a clever guess, "It's an injured Panduhr rolling down a hill!"

... Hanging out?

Oh well. Lou shrugged. He was not the person to be judging creepy behavior and the like,

That still didn't solve this... Dilemma, however.

"Pipsqueak... Sometimes people do these things for a reason." Lou tapped his finger on the book. "This book is garbage." The vampire said simply. "You shouldn't feel sorry for it."

He paused. "Why the sudden interest in jokes anyways?"

"Even if it's no good, he shouldn't have abandoned it there!" Victoria hugged the book to her chest, and turned away from Lou to protect it from him, "They should have at least donated it to the library... Or somewhere else not a fireplace."

Calming down quickly, her voice lowered, "I thought it might help me find a home."

Lou seemed... Genuinely disturbed by Victoria's words and actions. It was an awful feeling, and he really didn't like it. So why was he experiencing such strong emotions? He didn't really care about this orphaned runt, did he? It was a question that danced through his head during his momentary silence before becoming overwritten by the more important question in this situation.

Was... Victoria comparing that shitty joke book to herself?

He tried to keep a straight face. He really did, but Lou had never really pondered how not having a family could affect other people. He'd never cared because, well... He didn't really know why he didn't care but it was safe to say that he didn't.

"I don't think that's going to help you, pipsqueak. It's just a badly written book of jokes." Lou grimaced and patted her head. "Why's a home so important anyways?"

Victoria remained quiet as she continued to hold the book close, refusing to let go of it. She was frowning and pouting all at the same time, her eyes drilling holes into the ground. She was too stubborn to see things from Lou's point of view; she wanted to prove that the book could be useful too, that one person's junk can be another person's treasure. Things that are thrown away... If you polish them up, they'll look good as new. Maybe even better.

"I'm still going to keep it," She replied firmly, her gaze still lingering on the ground as she went silent again. A few seconds later, she shrugged, "It... Feels important to have a family. As important as mirrors are. You can't be alone when you have family."

... Can't feel alone when you have family?

What was loneliness anyways? Lou had never really been alone before. Whenever he was out in public, he was surrounded by people and could talk to them as he pleased until they were either offended by his presence or had to leave. Whenever he was home, he had animal companions to care for. Being 'alone' had never really been an issue.

"Well... Why is being alone such a bad thing?" The boil finally asked, his brow furrowing as he watched her stare at the floor. Why was she so miserable? Had he caused this in some form? Because he hated the jokes?

"Being alone is lonely," Victoria seemed to shrink as her frown deepened, and she continued to focus on the ground, "Nobody knows that you're there in the mirror. They look in, through you but never at you. Then I was found, only to be put back in lost and found... Family won't put you in lost and found."

Lou couldn't say he'd ever considered that.

Being as outspoken and overzealous as he was, the vampire rarely worried about being ignored or looked through. People noticed him, and... Maybe that's exactly what he wanted out of all of it. What if no matter what he did, the people around him failed to notice or acknowledge his very existence? How would it affect him?

Maybe he'd feel the same way that Victoria did.

So, how did he fix this? And why did he care if it was fixed or remained broken?

It wasn't a matter of if he cared anymore, it was a matter of why.

"Hey." The boil tapped her shoulder to try and get her attention. Maybe pull her out of the lonely abyss she'd fallen into. "You wanna come bake some spookies with me today? You can keep telling me awful jokes if you want." Though he wouldn't deny they were quite awful.

Very, very slowly, Victoria started to look up until she was looking directly at the vampire.

"You know how to bake spookies?" She asked with a slight tilt of her head, interest perked. She seemed to relax slightly, her hold on the book no longer as tight.

Lou smiled and nodded. "Yep, and I'm pretty good at it if I do say so myself." The vampire offered out his hand to her. "We can make any kind you like."

"... Okay," Victoria relented, grabbing hold of Lou's hand, "I want to make little mirror sugar cookies... With blue icing."
