The sun was just beginning to break over the mountain peaks of Zena, allowing just the smallest slivers of light in. The beams hit the side of Ruelash’s parents’ home and filtered in through the windows, casting light across the once dark shapes. Now that the morning had lifted over the mountains, it wouldn’t take long before it was full day in the village and people could already be heard stirring from their homes. The hustle and bustle of Secer was just beginning and the raptrix training sounds that typically filled the air would start soon.

Ruelash was in bed, but would no doubt be waking before long. And beside his bed, lying on the floor was a surprise that would not be welcomed. The middle of the floor to his room held a small puddle of something. Something dark red and typically warm, but now cold to the touch. And in the midst of this small puddle was a blunt object, not unlike a club.

Ruelash didn't particularly hate mornings. On the contrary, he usually loved them. There was something wonderfully desolate about the morning in the tundra that turned even the hell of the village into something beautiful. Perhaps it was the frost, or maybe just the lack of people.
Either way, he really liked the early morning. Today, though, he had slept in a little bit and missed that magical time of morning. He rose from the pillow and rubbed his eyes, shaking out his untidy hair and reaching for his hairtie before noticing that something was amiss in his spartan room. He frowned, squinting at the pool of cooling fluid on the floor.

Why was there an apparently bloody club in the middle of his floor?

He got out of bed and touched the puddle bringing some of the fluid to his face to inspect it, his hair, for the moment, forgotten. Was it blood? Was it fresh? What was it doing in his room? He looked out the door to see if he could find any more clues.

Ruelash had only been inspecting the object for mere moments before a curling scream pierced the air outside. The sounds of commotion began to stir and cries of outrage, anguish, and anger could be heard from Ruelash's room hanging in the air and crushing the atmosphere of the previously peaceful morning.

Outside in the village, not too far from Ruelash's home, a group of people had gathered around the scene of the crime. A woman's body lay in the middle of their circle, bled out from head trauma that seemed to come from a blunt object. She was cold already, having been dead for quite some time, and those in the village were waking up to the atrocity outside of their homes. Their voices were growing from hurried murmurs to angered cries for action, become a chaotic mix of men and women. Mothers covered their childrens' eyes and hurried them back into their homes, while the rest of the village looked on with disgust at what had happened in the course of the night.

He looked up as the scream split the air and, consequently, his head. He liked mornings, but not loud mornings, and apparently someone had decided to be loud. A lot of someones.

He got up, still disheveled, grabbed a coat, and went out to see what the ******** these idiots were on about now, and possibly vent his increasingnly pounding head at them by being a generally ornery a**.

As he stalked towards them, he noticed that they were gathered around something.

Oh. Hey. It was a dead body. Well that hadn't been there last time he had looked! Why was everybody making a fuss about it? It wasn't like people didn't die all the ******** time. She probably was an idiot and froze to death.
Then he saw the blood in the snow and the crushed look to her head and face. Well, maybe not froze, though he supposed she was cold now. Well, that sucked... for her. He didn't honestly care. Dead bodies were boring. Mostly. He had cared about a few dead bodies- his mother's and Veshki's- but those were really special cases. As in, he wanted them back and alive. But for them, no matter of clinging and carrying and hoping was gonna bring them back from the dead, because they were dead and that was the ******** end.
In all other cases, dead, cold, bodies were boring. They werent doing anything but rotting or being eaten, and he didn't eat people (ewwww) so this woman was nothing more to him than something that had been and was no longer and it wasn't as if these people's annoying shouts and whispers (always with the ******** whispers) would do anything for her.
He rolled his eyes with disgust at the mothers pushing their children away. Oh look- more wimps in the making...

Anyway, mental rant over, he decided to stalk up to the group and try to get them to go away from outside his and Jawaad's house. He didn't want to yell- just thinking about it made his head twinge a bit- but he would be an a**.
"Th' ******** is going on?" he asked. Well, he knew what was going on, but it was as good a way as any to barge in and be unfriendly.

All of the villagers turned to look at Ruelash, most abashed by his uncaring remark. Was he blind? Could he not see what had just happened here? Most of the villagers didn't know how Ruelash could be so uncaring about the situation. She had been someone's sister, daughter, wife, and mother even. And worse still, someone could be next. Who knew what the murderer was expected to do? A large bearded man turned to Ruelash and said the words everyone was thinking with venom, "You see what's going on." He pointed to the scene. "Show some respect for the dead."

A woman in the back of the crowd came forward. "You!" Everyone had turned to look at her at this point. A very small woman and one that couldn't have been more than 20. "It was you! I saw you!" She screeched at Ruelash. The others took up a rowdy murmur. Could what she said be true? She looked angry and grief stricken and the village knew her as one of the dead woman's neighbors. "Last night! You were out here. Look he still has the blood on his hands to prove it!" She pointed to the hand Ruelash used to touch the blood earlier.

The crowd burst into an uproar before the bearded man quieted them. "Calm down!" His face clearly showed the whole disdain for the situation and his disdain for Ruelash. His face screamed accusation, though he wouldn't come outright and say it. "Why do you have blood on your hands, boy?"

Ruelash rolled his eyes, every inch a surly teenager. People. He offered no excuses, but gave the woman an odd look, somewhere between general disgust and confusion. "I was what? No I wasn't, wasn't out here last night..." he said, puzzled, He'd been home last night, resting. Inside, or out back feeding the raptrix. He hadn't been out here.

Blood on his hands, huh? Oh! Right! He looked down. But was it blood?
It was probably blood. Huh.

"Because I found a puddle of it in my room when I woke up?" he said, puzzled. Who the ******** cared about blood on his...

It suddenly began to start clicking in his head. Well ********. This was getting awfully familiar, wasn't it.

"Chi's breath." he muttered in annoyance, "You think I...?" he trailed off. "Well I didn't. So ******** y'all." he said, and turned around to go right back into his house, fuming annoyance.

The crowd burst into an uproar at Ruelash's response. Shouts of 'He did it!', 'Get him', and outbursts about the blood on his hands rang through the air. The crowd was angry and Ruelash was giving them no reason to settle down. He was only fueling their hatred; mostly for the situation, but starting to turn towards him and his flippant remarks. To most of them he was just a no good kid that had murder in his heart, an effect of mob mentality that soured even the best of people.

The large bearded man who had spoken up earlier put a hand on Ruelash's shoulder, forcibly stopping him from reentering his home. "Where do you think you're going, boy?" The crowd jeered and agreed with the large man's actions. Shouts of 'Blood in his room!' and 'Don't let him go back in there!' rang out along with other nasty remarks. The woman who had spoken up against Ruelash opened her mouth again. "There was a puddle of blood in his room! That proves it! He probably still has the weapon in there!" she shrieked out. The crowd rushed into the house, storming through the place and searching for the murder weapon, only to find it on his bedroom floor where it had been left earlier. "Murderer!" someone shouted from inside.

The large man's grip on Ruelash's shoulder tightened, waiting for some sort of explanation from him.

Why yes, he was a no good kid that had murder in his heart. But he hadn't killed that woman and this was getting more and more familiar and aggravating by the second. He hated these people about as much as they hated him, and it was growing at about the same rate too.
He prickled and glared back as the man grabbed his shoulder, and his temper began to flare when they barged into his home. He snarled in anger. He hoped his sister's raptrix would claw them up good for being obnoxious and probably breaking her things.
"Look, ya putrid worm bastards, I didn't kill her!" he snapped back at the man and the angry crowd, "I didn't kill Veshki either! Only person I've killed is a bandit and I didn't see any of you complaining or whining about that!" he tensed and muttered something unintelligably hostile under his breath as the cries came from the house. People could be such idiots.
"Get yer hands offa me" he said, trying to shake off the old man's hand...

The shouts from inside confirmed Ruelash's findings this morning. The crowd only grew louder and a voice from inside rang out, "He's got the murder weapon!"

The large man holding Ruelash down lost attention for a moment, letting his grip loosen as he listened to the tumult happening inside. He leaned in closer trying to get a better earful of the shouting, when, combined with Ruelash's twisting and tugging, he let go.

It was a split second, but it was long enough for Ruelash to get away.

Ruelash had a bad feeling about this crowd. This was worse than the thing with Veshki. He could sense the growing bloodthirst in the air, and he knew it well.

He was trapped between two instincts. On the one hand, he hated these whiny shits and if they wanted a fight, he wanted to give them one. The idea was tempting.

But his more sane instincts were telling him that he couldn't take on a whole bloodthirsty crowd. Please run away his survival instincts whimpered, Run away, into the tundra before they kill you!

He wanted to fight, though! He was getting all angry and riled up and it needed release some how!

So run! Run away and live in the harsh lands! That always works. Fights don't always work.

But... but... fighting.

They aren't worth your time

And they would probably kill him. As interesting as the thought was, self-preservation-instincts had a point. It just wouldn't be worth the effort and he was sick of them anyway. Beating them up would be a chore.

And besides, he was a bit confused about the whole murder-weapon-in-his-room-if-he-didn't-do-it thing. Maybe the tundra would clear his head. It would certainly be quieter than this.

Taking his opportunity, he bolted for the wild, towards the paths and shelters he knew well, throwing an annoyed glare behind him at the crowd.

Idiots.

The bearded man reached for Ruelash, chasing after him as far as he could, but Ruelash was just too fast. The man was winded before he had gotten very far and his cursing and yelling could be heard thrown into the wind.

The other villagers rushed out of the house and watched as Ruelash took off, shouting and cursing and mumbling with the rest of them, before one by one turning back to the scene at hand. There was nothing much to be done when Ruelash was that far off already. No doubt the icy tundra would soon finish him off.

The scenery changed from village to wild Zena before too long, with rocky outcroppings hugging the pathways, snow littering the ground, and sparse trees gathering in clusters as if to keep themselves warm. The mountains in the distance loomed over Ruelash, as if they were trying to oppress him and stopping him from leaving the basin that was Secer.

Soon the winds picked up and a new dumping of snow started up, a flurry of white that blinded and slowed movement. It seemed to be only getting worse as Ruelash traveled further from the town.

When he was sure he wasn't pursued, Ruelash stopped to tie his coat on nice and tight and properly. He set up his hood against the wind.
The wind was cold, and it stung where it hit skin, but Ruelash preferred it's growling and pain to the villagers. The cold did not judge or make stupid assumptions. It just was. He liked that.
He raised an arm to shield his eyes from the flurry and kept moving. He knew he should take shelter soon, and he knew he must have some shelter prepared around here. He looked around for a landmark, but it was hard to see through the driving snow. He kept to the rock face so as not to lose it- if he had a shelter around here, then it would be in the rock or a cave, or something. He hadn't been this way in a while. He wondered if he shouldn't try to seek out a place he knew, like the cave on the ridge (where the bandit was killed) or the little alcove in the pass (where he had weathered a long blizzard). He knew both were livable and both had some supplies there already.
He knew what he needed- a sharp thing to cut with, wood to burn, flint and tinder to make fire. He had had to leave in a hurry, so he didn't have them, but that just meant he would have to find them.
Or... he could find a place near the town and sneak back to pick up his gear.
Surviving was his immediate concern. The villagers and their stupid accusations and why a bloody club ended up in his room when he clearly hadn't put it there - these all came later.
He continued to look for a suitable place to hunker down...

The flurry of snow seemed to only pick up and it was soon clear that Ruelash would have to find someplace and soon. It was getting harder to see even three feet in front of where he was going, the wind kicking up snow from below and from the surrounding landscape as well as from above.

At this point it was hard to even tell which way the snow was falling from.

Fuuuuck. It was getting worse. Normally, he would be delighted, but normally he didn't have to wonder about anything like stupid villagers and being framed. Normally he only had disdain and grumpiness on his mind, if survival didn't push it out.
But he couldn't see any of his landmarks through the thick, amorphous snowfall. Normally he liked being lost, but right now he needed shelter, damn it!
Suddenly, he tripped over a stone hidden in the whirling white and his arm went through the snowdrift into... someplace dry!
He powered towards it and found himself in an alcove- a small cavern blocked by a rockfall. He blinked at the sudden stillness of the air as compared to the whirling outside.

Huh. He didn't know this place. It wasn't one of his stashes, but it had some supplies, and he was going to use them. It had Firestarting materials and some logs to keep it going, and over in the corner was what looked like a little stash of jerky and medicinal healing stuff. He had no idea what any of that medicinal healing stuff was called, but he could use it. Sorta. Not much, but he'd just deal with it and not b***h and moan like everybody else in that ******** village.

Either way, he set about with the fire because it was cold and that was a pretty good first thing to do, setting out wood and tinder and lighting it with the stone and piece of flint that he had found with it.

As he nursed the fire, he took stock of the situation. He could keep the fire going for a while, but foodwise he was not in good shape. He would need to hunt soon, assuming the flurry let up enough to see more than ten feet ahead, and assuming he could figure out how to get prey without his knife.

He supposed he could use the flint or steal from other people's traps.

eh. He would figure it out. These things made sense to him.

Either way he would probably be here for a while with just the fire and old jerky to occupy him. He had a feeling he was going to be doing a lot of thinking about the events of the day, and he wasn't looking forward to it.
