Ruthie glanced at the clock in the bottom right of her computer screen as students shuffled through the rows of bookshelves, picking up anthologies and journals in preparation for the academic year. She picked up a flyer to teach a young man. She wondered how much knowledge he could glean from her. After all, she was a student too, but perhaps she mastered something he required more knowledge about?

Like selecting perfume?

Like arranging roses?

She doubted it, but she couldn't be sure. After all, people needed help with all kinds of miscellaneous or obscure things. Perhaps he just wanted someone to talk with?

As she waited, she searched for pictures of black, fluffy cats. She missed her little pastry-baking friend.

Hey there! So sorry about the delay! <3

Isha hated libraries. It was as simple as that. Having to be quiet, having to RETURN books. Why couldn't he just keep them all? He'd pay for them! Naw, of course they had to share with the 'public'. That's why he had his own PRIVATE library, in the confines of his home!

In fact, why didn't they just meet there? Oh, there was the fact that the girl was a college student. They never had much money during that time, so she probably didn't have a car either.. Though he had been walking the whole time, thinking as he moved about to the library, he stopped short just of entering. No. There was no reason for him to go into this acting this way. He was a high-clash teen. And he was sweet, or so he wanted to convince himself of anyway. He had no intention of being a stuck up spoiled brat like his eldest sister!

With a smile, he entered the shop, looking around for the girl who was to teach him. She was rather hard to miss, with her bright lovely hair. Isha nodded, confirming to himself that she was, infact, the girl he was searching for. Sneaking up behind her, he glanced over her shoulder, smiling a bit wider. So, she had a thing for cats! It seemed like every girl he met had a thing for the furry little things! Why not dogs? Puppies were cute too!

"Hello Miss! I'm here for my lessons!" He came off far more childish than he wanted to. He was 16! Technically a man! His baby face, rather high voice, and over all shortness would say otherwise.

"Eee!"Ruthie jumped a little. She didn't expect anyone to stare over her shoulder. Oh! It was a young man! Probably the same young man she was expected to teach. "Why hello to you too!" Smiling, she stood and extended her hand. "My name is Ruthie. Are you...Isha?"

She gestured to the empty seat before her. "Please." She returned to her seat and brushed back a strand of hair. "So tell me: What would you like to learn exactly?"

She closed out of the adorable cat photos. She would have to reminisce about Thetis another time. Her student demanded her attention!

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Ruthie. Indeed I am!" He took the young woman's hand, giving it a bit of a squeeze in greeting. Taking the seat she had offered him, he reached into this bag, pulling out a neatly folded sheet of paper, pointing down a neatly written list labeled "64 Kala".

"I'm here today for a lesson on this. Number 54 on my list! Manasi kavya kriya, or in English, the art of composing verse mentally. Which, in my mind, is doing poetry in your mind.. like at an instant.. But English, it is not my first language, so sometimes, words that sound like they rhyme to me does not. If you could think of the way that you could help me with that, that would be very useful!"

"Very well." Glancing over the list, Ruthie mentally marked which of the Kala she accomplished. She wore makeup regularly, and she could splash in puddles, but medicine and mechanics? Not so much. Maybe after this lesson she would hop onto Wikipedia and study physics or herbs...But back to her young student! She smiled. "Would you mind providing an example of two words you think rhyme but aren't completely sure about?"

She opened her laptop and closed out of the cat browsing tab. She searched "pantoum" and pulled up an instructional tab.

"In the meantime, we can study this form, which doesn't require rhyming, but is a well-respected and common Western form. It's called the pantoum, and practicing it mentally may require a bit of thought since it requires a predetermined vocabulary and the pattern can seem tricky, but after a while, it should grow simpler, right?"

"Um.. Yes.. But first.. there is something that bothers me.. One i have in my mind is Echo and meadow.. They are to rhyme, yes? But I cannot hear it.. " His words came out from his lips, heavily accented. Echo became etcho, and meadow came out as me-ad-ow. He looked confused, unsure of how it sounded as it was to rhyme.

"I am not sure if I understand what you are saying, but sure, why not? I am no poet, but yes, over time it comes. I remember a form of poetry called a haiku, I believe.. Perhaps that's the only one I can think of right away as simple... But I want to know more than that. I want to know as much as you can teach me."

"OH DUH." Ruthie face-palmed. How could she forget the haiku? They only required they write one every year since second grade. "Great choice! We can totally learn the haiku, but let's improve rhyming first, I guess."

She typed the words "echo" and "meadow" on a word document.

"Try saying them slowly and notice how the consonants line up." She underlined the "cho" and the "dow". "Eh-KO and Meh-DOH. A rhyme for echo would use 'KO' at the end, right? A rhyme for meadow would use 'DOH' at the end.

It can be tricky! Does this make any sense? Would you like to try with a different word?

Isha narrowed his eyebrows in confusion, trying understand what she was trying to say, but it truly sounded the same to him..

"But.. They both make the long 'oh' sound at the end to me.. if you go by that, couldn't they rhyme..? Or maybe, is it always more than just the last sound you hear... Are there any real rules for rhyming? Is it, perhaps, like 'tao' and 'cow'? They sound the same to me as well.. "

"To be honest, no.. It doesn't make sense to me at all!" He smiled, trying to make sure he came over as pleasant, rather than frustrated. "English is definitely a bizarre language.."

"Aw, sweetie, it's okay. Have you played with syllables? Basically you want the last syllable of a word to match for it to count as rhyme." She smiled. "So even though 'tao' and 'cow' don't have matching consonants, they're one syllable long have the same 'OW' sound. Is this still confusing?"

She turned back to her computer and typed. "SWAGGU" and "RAGU".

"Let's look at these." She brought her hands together and clapped the syllables. "SWAG-GU. RA-GU. Do you see how they both end with 'GU'? That last syllable makes them a rhyme."

She hoped this would make things clearer. Maybe he needed another example?

"Yes, it's still confusing.. And what is Swaggu..? And if that is the case.. Why doesn't "meadow'" and "echo" rhyme..? Eck- o.. Med-o.. They both sound so much alike.." He honestly looked confused, almost hurt. Not that it was his teacher first, he just wanted to understand.

"Either way.. Perhaps I'm thinking too hard about it. My ears are still not the most in-tuned with English. Thank you for your patience.. If you would like to move on with this, I understand... It must be quite annoying to have a student who does not understand.."

"Oh it's my pleasure to teach you." She smiled. "I just want to make this easier for you. Maybe look up a list of rhymes later and cycle through them until they seem clearer?" The poor guy looked confused. "It's okay not to get it right away, you're still tuning into the language, and there's plenty of time to learn." She nodded. "Let's move on to the haiku then."

She wondered how familiar with syllables he exactly was, and said, "Haikus are three-line poems. The first and last lines have five syllables. The second has seven. You follow?"

Isha couldn't help but smile back at the woman before him. Her look of happiness was simply contagious, even with how frustrated he was with himself. He nodded, agreeing with what she said, and just kept silent for the moment until she switched subjects. Haikus were just cute little things, in his mind, but they had a history far longer than he could even consider!

"I do.. five seven, five. Can I have an example, please?"

"Of course." She chuckled She counted the syllables on her fingers:

I"Isha learns from me."

Five.

"Frost creeps onto our windows."

Seven.

"By winter, he'll learn."

Five.

"Need any clarification?"

What? Did she really think it would take him that long to figure something as simple as that out? He was a foreign language speaker, not an idiot!

"That does not makes sense.
It is eighty-three degrees
Miss Ruthie, how's that?"

"I'm learning quite fast
I quite enjoy our time here
This is not that hard."

He couldn't help but feel a little smug at this. He didn't even need to use his fingers!

Ruthie smiled. He knew syllables! Awesome!

"Excellent!" she laughed. "You can use this talent to hit on people! I MEAN impress others with your intellectualism." She nodded. "Yeah." Another laugh. "Sound good?"

Papers rustled and books shelved and Ruthie hoped she taught Isha or at least introduced him to poetry. Maybe rhyming seemed difficult, but at least he mastered haikus.
