The hat asks him where he wants to go, and Pickles tells him somewhere fun.The hat tells him there is no fun house, and maybe he should go to a different kind of school. This is not the response Pickles is hoping for.

It's his favorite place in the whole world.

He'd waited for this day since forever. It meant everything. Who he was, where he was going, what his purpose and place in the world was. When it turned out to be a weasel, he wasn't sure what to think.

Pickles offers up each memory to the tree, and the tree grows and grows and grows. He looks up at it in admiration. But he's not finished yet! He fetches it just a little more water, from the very dark pool, and as he does, he remembers all of his friends. They'll be okay, he thinks. They are smarter than a lot of people give them credit for.
