It had been days since the female hyena, Atieno had any meat. She was too small to get the big prey and very much alone to get anything without needing the help of others, especially when other predator's bigger than Atieno could squish her.

Coming across a thick area of of bushes that produced, interestingly enough, any means of food and items such as leaves and sticks to create nesting....And possibly have smaller prey lurking about. Crouching low she sniffed the ground to catch any scent of small prey because really eating berries or roots, or....left over meat was not the way for anyone to live.

He was out and about as usual. Today he'd specially asked Lore's help. Some of his quary liked to hide in thickets and low bushes. He'd find her a treat in return for her help this day. So as not to disturb her or their quary, he was waiting a fair bit off.

Lore hopped from branch to branch. She tilted her head as she looked for bugs and things that were hard for the lion to get. She did this willingly only because she knew she'd get something nice out of it in return. Thus the bird did her best to find what he wanted. After getting several bugs in her beak she'd fly back to deposit them in his bag and fly off again.

The yellow bird wasn't paying too much attention to her surroundings as she pushed her head in toward the center of a knot of branches. There was a big in there and she was trying to coax it into reach.

Atieno sniffed that there was something close by. It was more than close by she could hear the soft movements of prey. It sounded soft so it must be small but honestly anything was better than nothing. Licking her lips she moved closer and closer until....She made a fierce growl for a small creature herself and pounced onto the prey arching through the air to pin it down. "Mine!"

Lore had just about gotten the bug when something alerted her. She pulled back. Something large growled and pinned her down. The bird gave a squawk and beat her wings uselessly. She was trapped!

"Not yours! L'ENVOI! HALP!" Lore hoped he would hear her call. She didn't think she could convince whoever had decide to make a meal out of her otherwise.

He had been minding his own business, thinking that Lore would be coming back any second to drop off another bug. So the black lion had been listening for wingbeats. Instead he heard a rustle then Lore call his name. L'envoi was on his way in a second. He ran toward the bushes with a mighty roar.

The normally calm and cheerful lion was ready to do battle when he came upon a hyena. He gave another mighty roar just in case she hadn't heard the first one. "Let her go!" L'envoi ordered as his claws dug into the ground. She had once chance to comply before he'd make her.

Atieno was about to strike but paused, looking confused at the bird calling for someone else. If it was another bird then that wasn't very smart because this one and that other bird who might try to help would end up in her stomach.

Growling low the hyena was about to once again end this prey's life before she was startled at the sound of a roar and crouched low. Looking around until a large male lion came, ready to attack commanded her to let the bird go. Was he insane? This was food, food couldn't be let go. Unless he claimed her first?

Of course it would be like the lions to claim everything for themselves, those jerks. Glowering at the large male she backed off a tiny bit but didn't let the bird go just yet. "Why? Have you claimed this bird as your meal, lion? That's very like your kind to have everything for yourself and never share. Not that hyenas are any better but I am just one. I'm hungry and this bird is mine."

Lore squirmed as she tried to free herself while L'envoi kept the hyena's attention.

L'envoi bristled and flexed his claws menacingly. He didn't want to hurt the hyena, but he would if she forced him to to save Lore. "She is not," he emphasized, "a meal! She is a friend and my companion. If you hurt her you will regret it." He gave a low growl in warning that in another moment he would attack. His muscles tensed and he crouched ready to go. Her move.

The hyena growled back and looked down at the squirming bird between her paws. If what this lion said was true, especially given how he was reacting to her threat in getting ready to attack and possibly kill of necessary, she bared her fangs at the bird. "Is what this lion says is true bird?" Atieno was willing to back off if it was true. If again this was some ploy for the lion to get the meal before her she was going to be in a big nasty fight.

The yellow bird rolled her eyes. "No, I always call something BIGGER to come eat me instead!" Lore cast a pitiful look at the lion. "L'envoi do something other than talk! Get me out of here!" She didn't think the hyena was going to wait much longer.

L'envoi sighed. "Yes she really is. Let her go hyena. I swear I am not going to eat her." He relaxed just slightly. It seemed like what they were saying was making a difference and the hyena was on the fence about it. "If you really want something to eat besides that scrawny bird I'll help you catch a real meal. Just let her go and we have a deal."

Atieno rolled her eyes at the bird for being so mouthy. If this lion wasn't here to claim this bird as his companion she would have silenced the bird with one chomp. As it were, this bird was someone's companion and this hyena wasn't heartless.

Perking her ears at the offer she thought that the lion had a better chance at getting her something to eat than she would and that would be good. Moving away from the bird she glowered at it then turned to face the lion keeping that glower. "I'm going to accept your offer but if you lie to me, I'm going to fight you to the death." Which she would rather starve a bit longer than allow anyone to lie to her and get away with it.

Lore fluttered away as soon as the hyena gave her enough room. She landed on black back that provided safety. This was why she was grateful she'd joined up with him. It didn't happen often thankfully. Lore fluffed out her feathers and started to preen. That had been much too close. She would insist he stayed closer in sight for awhile now.

L'envoi watched as Lore scuttled free and came to perch on his back. He turned his head to give her a quick reassuring lick. Knowing she was a bit shaken when she didn't complain about the lion slobber. He turned back to the hyena with a scornful look. "I don't have a reason to lie, and there's no need for that threat. I meant what I said." He was grateful that the hyena had listened to reason and let Lore go. It wasn't often his temper got away with him. L'envoi realized that if harm had come to his bird it probably would have set him off.

"C'mon then hyena. I said I'd help you catch a meal. Not do the work for you." He turned and started walking toward a good hunting spot; not looking back to see if she came along or not.

Growling low, the hyena didn't like the lion's tone and followed him with a healthy distance between them because she simply didn't trust him. What did the feline think? When you are hungry and there is prey you obviously go after it right? So then his snippy attitude was unnecessary and only made her hold further contempt on the feline species. "Then let's make this quick so I can be away from you and your pet." Scowls at them both.

Fin! Thanks krusnik. <3

While L'envoi had only done this to save her didn't mean she had to like it. Lore kept her eye on the hyena just in case.

L'envoi glanced back just once to see the hyena following him. "Stick to the tall trees while I help this....." What he wanted to say wasn't very polite, but she had let Lore go. "Hyena," he said softly to the bird. He'd keep his end of the deal then leave. The lion kept his eyes open for quick prey as he walked.
