Ami didn't trust this place at all. It was creepily happy- it reminded her of the forgetful bliss the goddesses had given her so long ago. She didn't like the lull of this place, the way she felt pulled in. She was going to stay on her guard, she promised herself that much.
Finally, Ami came across the biggest tree of all. It seemed to be the only one that still thrummed with life, ringing with a voice.
"At last. At last, someone has arrived to hear my tale. It has been so long, I have been silence too long, taken and hidden, my power feared but not respected, cultivated until I am barren and empty. This is all that remains of my Legacy, but I am not finished, not yet. As long as my powers remain, my children will prosper after me. They will take up my mantle, to protect, to serve, to remember, and to grieve. Men like the Great King will rise again, and fall just as easily, but I only wish to serve. Come now. Help me fulfill my last desire."
Ami rolled her eyes. "Whatever. I don't really care about your legacy. Let's get this over with."

Ami departed from the tree, offput by its soothing aura. She eventually happened upon a lake.
It was beautiful, even Ami could admit that. The white wisps spooked her, but it was no matter. She would brave this stupid task. It was just taking care of a tree- how hard could it be? Water it a little, throw some soil on it and she was done.
Ami didn't bother with the voice in the water, instead she scooped some water out herself, carrying it over to a small tree. This one looked dead- that was criteria enough for her. An acorn formed and dropped onto the lush soil.
"What, that's it?" Ami asked, altogether unimpressed. What a disappointing little tree this was. It shuddered unhappily, withering as she plucked the acorn. "Well I guess this will have to do..."

[ Memory 1 ] Ami had always been a poms, for as long as she could remember. She spent most of her time hissing at others, laying under trees and reading the minipedia, checking for errors which she would then report to the bugs forum. She might even PM zoobey, just to make sure she saw the post in the bugs forum.
But today was a much darker day. It was a reminder to all minipets of the woes that lie outside the closet. A giant hand was reaching through, pulling her into a new land. A foreign land. Into Halloween.
She was shivering in a cage, cooped up in a cage inside some pet shop. Where was the big tree? Where were the vocalepus'? Where was the cat ring leader with his funny hat?
This was not her home. Ami didn't know where home was now.

[ Memory 2 ]
The battlefield was dusty. It was rust colored, stained with the blood of those she'd eliminated. Her expression was tight, no emotions were allowed to display.
They'd promised her. Ninety-nine victories and they'd promised her. One more and she'd be free. Free of the cages, the arena, the battles.
She'd get to see him.
That was the only reason she'd entered this competition. She needed the money. This was the only way she knew how. Fighting ran in her blood, and her glaive was merely an extraction tool for her glory. One more victory.
All for him.
She dusted off her shoes lightly, careful not to show the crowd the underside of her skirt. They were hooting and hollering now- she'd become something of an icon. They didn't matter to her. They were cicadas in the background. No matter. None of it mattered. She needed the money, and then- then she'd see ... Ami looked up.
Him.

[ Memory 3 ]
"I don't get it."
"Of course you wouldn't," the voice chided.
"Otto, why does this matter-"
"Just watch. It's good, I mean it."
She grumpily watched him, arms crossed. He was playing some "MMO" that was all the rage at the moment. Even adults and elders were playing it- it was that big of a deal. Otto was trying to get her into it, but it just wasn't sticking. "I have work to do. You know, like a responsible citizen. Enjoy your game."

Her tiny little tree had reached fruition. Her memories poured into it, and Ami could feel the tree sparking with life. "Is this good enough for you?" Ami asked the air, hands on her hips.
"Not quite."
Ami groaned. More cryptic messages from the queen of cryptic herself. What, did the white queen want her to tell the trees some bed time stories? Tuck them in and feed them their baby food?
"Take some of this water, and my blessing. This is my last request. Show my children your world so they will grow each unique and different."
The voice was growing sour, and Ami was growing tired. Instead of admiring the scenery (which she would have on any other day- it was a lovely spot for reading after all) she headed straight to the pools. There were so many to choose from- how was she to know which was the correct one?
She plunged her hands into the first one- it was much too warm. If she was going to water her tree she couldn't boil it to death. There was a cold pool, one that was chilled to the touch. It would do. She carefully poured it onto the tree, waiting for results.
A great wyrm curled around the branches, feet snapping a few of the twigs. It pushed through the wood, peering straight at her with slitted eyes. "Are you satisfied with what I have become?"
Ami squinted. "Are you?" The dragon shifted, curling downwards to sit under her stroking hand. "Ah, you are a pretty one." Her hand itched to kill it, but the grove hinted it wouldn't be a good idea. It would have to wait. The wyrm opened its mouth, breathing on her lightly. The feeling filled her entire body and she realized it was a blessing. A blessing from the goddesses.
