Taiki followed the warm glow through the silver trees until he stumbled upon one last one, the largest one. He stood in front of it curiously, his hands in his pockets, when the female voice spoke up. A smile. “Of course.”

The forest cleared to reveal a glowing lake. The pure white orbs dancing above the water was a pretty sight, but he hadn’t come here to admire the scenery. He plunged his head into the water (for reasons he didn’t really know) and listened to the voice. Oh, so the voice was the lake’s. Or something along those lines.

Slowly, he took his head out and pulled back the hair clinging to his face. He sighed before cupping his hands to carry the water over to the tree and let his fingers spread out. The clear liquid dribbled over it as it suddenly sprung to life and grew an acorn. But unfortunately that seemed to be all it had, as the plant soon withered with a curious thank you. Taiki bent down to pick it up.

Acorn: 11 mm

The orbs returned him back to the lake, and without much hinting he fell back into the waters. The cool temperature and clear liquid was much preferable to burning fire. Once more, Taiki listened to the voice and obeyed. A hand reached toward one of the shadowy figures, which he realized was actually a bubble with…something inside?

Cats were nice. Taiki was glad he had summoned a cat, even if it was a rather average summon to have. He didn’t mind that. A pale hand reached out to calmly yet gladly scratch the back of its white ears. Every time he took in the dark rings around its eyes and face, he couldn’t stop himself from chuckling amusedly. Their faces were nearly identical that way. Smiling contently, Taiki picked it up with both of his hands to plop it into his lap. “So, what should we do now?” he wondered as he reached for a list of unfinished cases. He hummed softly as he looked through each individual report.

“What do you think of this one?” Taiki held out a manila folder toward it and plopped it down for the feline to read. It flipped open to the first page and appeared to skim the contents before pushing the report onto the floor with its head.

“A resounding no, I see,” he laughed and continued searching. “Let us see, how about…”

A repeated pinging from his computer prompted Taiki to wake up from his sudden nap. Yawning, he cracked open an eye and pulled out the IM window.

tk_skeleton: What is it?
d0ggh0u1: tktktktk! U need 2 get online now
d0ggh0u1: battle guna start soon

He sighed, but reluctantly launched the game anyways.

tk_skeleton: On it.
d0ggh0u1: yeayeayeayea

The IM window still pinged even as he stared back at his skeleton avatar. It was an uncanny likeness in a way—it had his golden eyes and nearly identical hair. He joined the usual group chat.

d0ggh0u1: tktktktktk!
gasmaskdude: hey!
gasmaskdude: glad you could join us haha :]
tk_skeleton: Yeah, so what quest is this?
d0ggh0u1: legacy!
gasmaskdude: legacy event started. fighting lost wyvern boss now. haha. ready?

Taiki sighed, but typed in a series of commands into his keyboard.

tk_skeleton: Ready as I can be.

Taiki hummed as he entered the crime scene, his hand brushing away the caution tape and breezing past the officers already milling about. “So what would the problem be, officer?” he asked quietly, notepad in hand and pencil in the other.

“Well,” the broad-shouldered man began as he led him toward the victim. “Looks like some animal came and attacked our guy. Tore him up real good. See?” He gestured toward what remained of the man.

The detective clicked his tongue, but hastily scribbled away in his pad. “Is that so?” he murmured, more so to himself than anything else. Hat tilted upwards for a better look, Taiki stepped forward to examine the pieces. He put on a pair of rubber gloves before he delicately picked up what appeared to be an arm with torn pieces of flesh hanging all over it. “This is quite a doozy.” He narrowed his eyes and stared at the rest of the corpse. This wasn’t an animal nor was it human. It just didn’t feel right. Was something supernatural going on here? He wasn’t a believer, but keeping an open mind was key.

And then his acorn became a sapling. Taiki smiled, bending down to poke it curiously before the voice whispered again. It wasn’t done, not quite yet, but he was getting there. He walked back to the lake, but now he could see an extravagant castle in the distance while water fell from rocks at multiple heights. Interesting, but quite the sight nonetheless.

He cocked his head at the voice’s urging. More water? He wondered what the tree would do this time, but took from the light pool regardless. Taiki stepped back to watch the sapling transform into a tree with leaves. Perhaps it would even bud flowers. He smiled. “I am,” he answered.”
