When Amarus woke astride a shadow beast, she felt remarkably right in this endeavour, though she could not isolate why, exactly, she felt it was so appropriate. No memories sifted to the surface to tell her what it could be.
She simply concentrated on the feel of it, and tried not to want to dismount; as much as being surrounded by shadow felt right, she didn't much like being on a beast in the first place.
"What might we find?" she wondered.
Van was fairly uncomfortable, and very unhappy; he did not like this at all, and continued to whimper as they rode through the landscape surrounded by their allies.
When they heard yelling, Amarus gracefully dismounted, while Van tried to quiet his whimper and only got louder. He managed to, with a little assistance from one of their shadowy friends, land on his feet. "I suspect we should be careful," Amarus said, and Van just nodded, muffling his mouth with both hands.
Neither of them accounted for the difficulty that a full party, including beasts, would have sneaking by. Amarus and Van were spotted, by two knights.

Van wasn't as cowardly as Amarus assumed he was; as soon as he recovered, he darted in to do his part, swinging Revenge. She put on her blinders. She couldn't worry about the rest of this; her calmness, her battle sense, she turned them on and paid attention only to combat, predicting, gauging moves.
However, as Van took out Simple Revenge, Amarus felt something struggle in her to be recalled. There wasn't anything he could do about Amarus. He did, however, yelp: "I've got you!" and race to block the Knights' way with his own body, Simple Revenge at the ready.

Van was trying to be humble, but the praise clearly helped bolster his confidence a lot: "Thanks. We should look out for each other, you know?" he said, with a big grin. He flicked his tail back and forth.

Despite recovering her colours, her eyes were still silvery, like the surface of a mirror, as they reflected the knights she was aiming at steadily. Amarus smiled to herself, trying to hide it while fighting. The kid was doing way better than she expected him to, and he seemed like such a goof.
She shot rapidly, aiming for what weaknesses she thought the knights had. One was down, and there was only one left. She was in substantial pain, at this point. The knights' armour was proving hard to pierce. She was grateful they had such a large party, for this... Van's ears were flat against his head. He knew he could do this, he just had to concentrate, just like she said. He focused, and slashed at the Knight with the blade.
It was effective; the Knight must have been fairly demoralized by his companion falling in the first place. Van grinned, and then collapsed into the ground, lying there. He was sleepy. And in pain.
But they'd done it, right?
