He almost flailed in the man's face as he was slapped awake, even though it was only an encouraging pat on the back. Despite all of the battles he had been engaging in recently, Brenley was not used to physical contact or boisterous camaraderie between friends, and he shrank back when he realized that some part of his foggy brain considered this person one.
"What's wrong, son? You scared?" The man chuckled. Buck. The man's name was Buck.
"No," he answered immediately. He had wanted to do this... wanted to go on this... adventure. At least he thought he had.
Buck, Casey, Dave, Arlene, Matty, Louise, and Squirrel. Eight travelers...
The arrow shot out of nowhere, too quickly to stop it or get out of the way. Well, he supposed that was the end of Matty.
"Take cover!" Buck shouted, slapping Brenley's mount on the rump. The boy yelped as he was almost instantly flung from its back. Hopping to his feet as quickly as he could, Bren ran and crouched behind a rock as another arrow flew past.

PART ONE
When he finally caught his breath, Brenley realized that Arlene was hiding behind the same rock.
"What do we do?" he whispered to the woman.
"Whatever you want, sugar. You're our leader."
Bren only spent a moment in thought. "We try to sneak past. Make sure everyone knows."
Arlene nodded, darting off to inform the others. Half a minute later, he saw Louise moving between the rocks, then Casey, then Dave. It was time for him to go too, if he didn't want to get left behind.
They were as silent as the fog, creeping past the small gathering of wispy creatures on their way into the building. Matty lay unmoving at the center of the group of... were they knights? As Brenley and his companions passed, their fallen companion's body disappeared in a whirl of mist.
Squirrel gasped.
As one, the knights' attention refocused on the rocks. Bren readied his heavy sword, but before he could attack, another of their party sprinted out from cover, immobilizing all but one of their enemies.

Brenley's heart raced, but he knew what he had to do. With a grunt of effort, he stepped forward and swung his weapon, cleaving the remaining knight in two.
"Whoa! Way to go, kid!" Buck bellowed, clapping Bren on the back again as their foe fell.
"Th...thanks. We should get inside." Brenley hurried off, entering the building at a brisk walk.
"Better take one o' these for 'im," Buck said, tossing a shiny trinket at Squirrel. The second man bit it, nodded, and shoved it into his pack.
"Here here, boys!" Casey chirped, more loudly than Bren might have liked. "A lucky fountain!"
"I wouldn't..." Bren began, but it was too late. Several of the others had already dipped their hands in and were scooping water into their mouths.
"Ooo! I feel kinda... tingly!"
"Is that good or bad?"
Louise held up her arm. A long, thin cut along its length began to heal before Bren's eyes. "Good. I think."
"Yeah, son. Go on an' drink some."
Brenley nodded to himself, trying to work up enough positivity to convince himself this was a good idea. He took a deep breath and stuck his hand in as well, bringing a handful to his lips. The minor scrapes he had obtained while scrabbling around in the dirt outside began to close immediately and he felt more invigorated.
"All right, then." He smiled faintly. "Let's go."

The seven continued on in silence, stopping only when they reached a suspiciously narrow hallway. Well, most of them stopped.
"Hey, Boss," Arlene said, raising her hand to block Brenley's forward movement. "Traps."
She picked up a small rock that lay at her feet and tossed it farther down the hall. It landed on a discolored section of the floor that Brenley could now see was a pressure plate of some sort. A large scythe swung out of a vent in the ceiling in response. The boy swallowed.
"Hm. Traps."
He slid his foot forward and paused.
"I'll go first."

It took some time for them to make it through, but eventually the seven navigated the hall with only minor injuries. Brenley was pleased to find that he was decent at spotting and disabling traps, though he had no idea what he could use that ability for outside these halls.
The next room was quite beautiful. It was too bad no one was going to be able to enjoy it. Growing savvy to the tricks this place had up its sleeves, Brenley was the first to pick up a rock and toss it into the next room, nodding as a pillar of fire erupted from the floor.
"You guys ready?"
They nodded as one.
This room was not as easy to traverse as the first had been, and when Brenley emerged on the other side, smoking and scorched, he actually hoped there would be another fountain.
Instead there was an angry guardian.
