The funny thing about floating; time slips away. She couldn’t see, but felt the call, hovering and floating aimlessly towards it. All of her memories, her essence, her Heart, was all gone. She could see the world below her, or so she imagined, as she floated away from it.

In the fog, half-formed, Remye imagined she could see her old body. Or what it might have looked like, she wasn’t sure. The shell was broken; she was only this, now, a floating endless entity in the ether. Remye floated over the statues slowly, lingering to eye each one in its new visage.

And so the story ends…

That was the end of this story. Of Remye's story, and of others.

She wondered if she would float forever, but something shattered through her mind. This is not the end.

A great hand captured every memory, precious and part of her, holding them tightly, pulling her in to the great hand. Salvation. A promise to fulfill. What promise? She sucked in a breath, the first deep breath as she sunk into her body. Emotions flooded through her, drawing a pained gasp from the girl. Loss, pain, confusion, chaos, excitement, anger, hate

Steady. One step at a time. There is much more to still complete.

The voice was soothing. She felt warmth settling into her, relaxing under the order. Remye surveyed her surroundings carefully, eying the red and gold carpet, the seven pillars at the end of it. She stepped forward slowly, pausing at the deep rumble of the Great King.

Do you remember why?

She shook her head, slowly, not yet finding her voice in this new throat. I did not expect so. She cringed at that, swallowing, and stepped forward, eying the box. Seven locks. Seven important memories lie within this box, he explained. She eyed the gleaming, smoking red lock, inclining her head.

He pointed at it, explaining the locks in kind. Once all seven, no eight, have become unsealed, then you will regain your memories and face the truth. You, and only you. Fight until then. Serve your promise. Even if you do not remember it, your Heart does.

Remye watched as they sunk back in, tilting her head slightly as the castle seemed to… almost decay with time around her eyes. She nodded slightly, tilting her head forward, and sucked in a breath as the warmth enveloped around her. She was no longer grey, she was colorful now, she had a figure and no wisps.

Emery. Her name was Emery.

The memory was fragmented; she could only see pieces of it, and the last seemed to degenerate into… oddness. As the memory faded from her mind, Emery surveyed herself, feeling for the parts of her that were new and less grey. She was still a muted brown, not quite herself but close. She reached up to touch the necklace, but her fingers slipped through it.

She likened it to a collar. One never touches their collar. Everything around her faded away, leaving only two monuments. She tilted her head at the throne, eying it for a long moment, and then the pillars. Considering both options, her choice was easy. She stepped forward, resting her hand and forehead against the cool pillar.

A wise choice… For those who already know they are heroes and yearn for more.

May you find what you wish for, and may it lead to greater discoveries.

Something pulled at her, tugging her forward as her surroundings grew dark around her. Something moved under her feet, the air pleasant and warm, though the wind chilled her. She wasn’t quite awake yet, five more minutes –

A heavy something clapped down onto her shoulder, jerking Emery awake and making her jerk forward, squinting against the brightness. She laughed before she could stop herself, covering her mouth, and jerked at the clap on her back, laughing. “Shut it,” she muttered, rolling her eyes a bit and rolling her shoulders forward.

The shadow rider grinned. “Fell asleep, eh?”

“I mean it, Jak. Shut it.” Emery grinned, steering her own beast around and looking forward at the request of a second man. Roman. She could remember that name, easy. She nodded a little somberly as the building made itself known. She squinted, eying it quietly, then looked around herself. Seven shadow-men, each on a beast. They were her travelers, her companions. Her friends. Her pack.

She couldn’t remember exactly how she procured the map, but that wasn’t important. What was important was getting to the end of it, getting their prize, taking care of the pack. The shout broke her out of her stupor, and she looked up sharply, baring her teeth as the arrow hissed out of the darkness, lodging itself into Roman’s throat. She snarled low at the order, and dismounted off her horse, running to take cover from the attack with her party.

There were several of them, she knew, hiding and waiting, carefully keeping her breathing shallow. She cringed slightly at the determined stomp and crash of others searching for her party, and held her bow at the ready, arrow docked and ready if need be. She could see Roman from their hiding point, shoulders slumping slightly as he faded away. No time for last rights.

“He doesn’t die for nothing.” Emery said to Roman, and he nodded in agreement, eliciting more nods from the other five in their group. “Ready?”

“Ready.”

Emery straightened up, choosing to fight. Her group was behind her, ready for the clash as a knight readied its blade before them. She raised her bow, eyes narrowed. “Come on, then.” She growled.

Emery loosed the arrow with a distinct finality in her shot, but it only glanced the knight's armor, barely knicking as he came forward, swinging his sword with a vengeance. Murder was his intent. Emery needed to make it hers, as well.

The next attack was straight forward, as Emery tried to stab through the armor with an arrow at close range. It didn't end well, and she shrunk back towards her group, snarling and baring her teeth.

She let the arrow fly, but it was glanced off of the knight's helmet, only barely dinking the armor. She grimaced, growling softly, and grabbed another arrow, moving back to keep her distance from the knight.

Determined to win, Emery loosed her last arrow, and managed to spear the Knight's eye, sending him down to fade away. Grinning triumphantly, she came forward, patting Roman and another shadow person on the back as she walked up to the knight to retrieve her arrow. "Well done, all." She praised, crouching to look for loot.

She found a few things of interest, and claimed her own prize, before handing the others out for the men to divide among themselves.

"Now stay alert." She said pointedly, returning to her mount and climbing up onto the shadowy steed, and waiting for her party before they set out again. With the enemies gone, they ventured further into the building, and there, a fountain glimmered. Smiling to herself, Emery dismounted, waving at the men to join her, and they took a brief reverie to drink and dust off from battle.

"Are we ready?" She asked to Roman, who nodded slowly after they all drank. "Alright." She smiled, leaning forward and headbutting him. "Stick together. We don't know what to expect here."

"Yeah." He agreed, following as they ventured further into the building.

Emery and the party ascended a set of stairs, and were greeted by a narrow hallway. She squinted at it, starting to step forward, but was quickly stopped by Roman. “Wait,” He chastised, picking up a pebble and throwing it down the hallway. Emery flinched as the traps were activated, saws, spears, arrows, and – was that a swinging hook?! – all sorts of traps attempted to thwart the pebble’s arched path.

“Wonderful.” She said, shoulders slumping slightly. “Right. Mind your step, light on your toes.” She ordered, stepping forward gingerly. Briefly she wondered if there was a way to deactivate the traps, but another quick glance answered that; if there was, it would likely be on the other side, and by then it would do them no good. She stepped down on a loose slat and heard the whistle of air as an arrow shot out of the wall at her. She tried to dodge, but no avail.

-5 HP for first trap.

“Augh!” Emery snarled a little, hand held up to stop her companions venturing forward. “Easy,” She snapped, baring her teeth as she grasped the arrow by the shaft and pulled it free from her arm. It would make using her bow difficult, but she wouldn’t die from it. Hopefully.

“Alright,” She said, holding the wound and nodding to the stone she’d stepped on. “That activates that one. Watch it.” She warned, moving forward. For a few steps, nothing swung out at her, but Emery was quick to make sure her companions avoided any suspicious steps as they walked down the narrow hallway together, minding each step in case it set off a flamethrower or something equally ridiculous.

No damage for second and third trap.

As they walked further down the hall, nearing the end of the hall, Emery heard the click as someone stepped down on a tile, and looked up sharply. “Down!” She snarled, stepping back and shoving the companion down sharply as an axe swung at their way. She managed to duck in time, only taking a knick in the shoulder as it swung by. She hissed in anger and pain, holding her shoulder tightly, and straightened up slowly.

“Slow. And steady.” She reminded harshly, growling a little. “I don’t know about you lot, but I’d rather not die in a hallway.” And they carried on.

-5 HP for fourth trap.

The party ventured forward, Emery leading the way carefully, and bypassed a second trap Emery spotted only after passing it; a cannon, waiting with a string tied across the hall, ready to fire at some unsuspecting bloke. Whatever was at the end of this, it was obviously worth a lot. She couldn’t wait to get her hands on it.

No damage from the fifth trap.

Having been distracted by the fifth trap that had been relatively out in the open, Emery didn’t see the line until she had already tripped over it. A miniature catapult launched forward suddenly, throwing a heavy ball straight for their heads. Unaware if it would explode or not, Emery did what instinct said not to do: She caught it.

Right in the gut.

-5 HP for sixth trap.

She grunted, dropping the heavy ball as she doubled over in pain, gasping for breath. Still, they were at the end. She was done with this Hall of Horrors. Roman helped her cross through the threshold at the end of the hallway, into the next area. So close. They were so close.

The Gauntlet pt 3 - Mystic Tiles
Starting/Current HP: 25/40
Ending HP: 10/40
The rolls:

  1. The tile you step on gives way under your feet... and nothing happens.
  2. As you step on this tile, something wet sprinkles on you from above. Whatever it was, you feel better. Recover 15 HP.
  3. A tower of flame shoots up from the tile, badly burning you. Take 10 damage.
  4. CLANG! Something hard and heavy falls from the ceiling. You forget something.
  5. You activate a trap. Take 5 damage.
  6. You activate a trap. Take 3 damage.
  7. A companion reaches out and pulls you to safety! Nothing happens.
  8. As you step onto the tile, you are filled with a feeling of... elation...? Recover all HP.
  9. A companion reaches out and pulls you to safety, taking your place! Except... they're gone. Lose a companion.
  10. CRUNCH. You can still hear your companion's screams of pain as they suffer heavy damage. Take 50% HP loss (ie if you are 30/40, take 15 damage).

The next room made Emery cringe, as she watched her companion toss yet another pebble, and watched as it was burnt to a crisp. “Awesome. Fire. What’s a castle without fire.” She looked at Roman, exasperated. He grinned crookedly, and she tried to return it, letting go of her shoulder and grimacing at the sticky pain of the scabbing process. Eugh.

“Well. Ladies first.” He ventured, gesturing. She hit him in the gut for his trouble, and went forward carefully, stepping onto the first tile. It gave under her, eliciting a sharp yelp from the girl… But nothing happened. Nothing happened. She laughed weakly, rubbing her face, and pointed back at her companions. “Shut it. I mean it.”

Grinning, the party moved onto the tile after her, as she went forward. The second tile gave slightly, and she felt the heat before the flames shot up, leaping back as the flames came up and burnt her badly.

-10 HP from Fire Tile.

A companion – not Roman, this was Rory. – reached out quickly, yanking Emery back out of the flames and covering her with something that put out the few flames still burning off of her skin. She sucked in a desperate breath, trying to shake off the pain of the fire, and sat for a long moment, panting and shaking. Finally, she nodded.

“Come on. Have to get through.” She said determinedly, getting up again and stepping out onto a tile in a different direction. This trap was quick and efficient, managing to hit her with a well-flung rock before another companion pulled her out of harm’s way. She shook off the hit from that, grimacing as moving resulted in more pain from the burns.

The final few tiles were crossed without incident, and they crossed into the last room. It was a circular room, filled with many shelves and many, many cups. She looked to the fountain, and tilted her head. “That’s it, boys.” She said slowly, staring at the fountain. “Not a prize, not gold… It’s this.”

“Drink.” Roman urged her forward, and Emery grinned wide, stepping forward into the room. She only managed a few steps before a javelin was sharply planted in front of her. She jerked back, looking up sharply, and stared as something – a Guardian – strode into the light. “Oh, bugger.” Roman said slowly, backing up. “Em, come on.”

“Ready boys?”

Roman grimaced, looked to the party… And they all nodded. “We’re with you.”

Emery nodded slightly. This would be… Fun.

Emery glanced to her left; flanking her was Roman and Rory, both ready with their swords as the Guardian loomed down over them menacingly, ready to cleave the lot of them in half with its javelin. She smiled crookedly. “All in?”

“All in.” Rory smiled slightly, hefting his sword. Emery grinned at that, and drew her bow back, gritting her teeth against the pain of pulling on her shoulder and forcing her arm back. The injuries hadn’t healed, and she felt like her arm was going to give. Still, the arrow flew forward as Rory, Roman, and the others charged, attacking the guardian head on.

They could do this.

They had to do this.
