Acanthite hoped that this meeting would not go too badly. She still felt guilty about how the energy gathering event had gone. It was like she just hadn't hated the people there enough, for the most part. Or they had distracted her from it.

She tried to reassure herself as she approached the location Ilmenite had specified; at least he did not seem really super serious? Maybe the senshi could get off easily this time. And just make an invested effort not to let it happen again.

If Ilmenite knew just how much people worried about him -- about his discipline -- about his being angry -- he probably would have laughed out loud. Or, maybe, he would have been a bit impressed. It was what a Negaverse Officer was supposed to be. Or so he'd been told...

Well. Acanthite would learn quickly, at least, when she approached the building. All bright lights and young men in tight clothing, a line around the block. The wafting, mixing scent of tobacco and marijuana. A mini dance party among the group of too-well-dressed, somewhat-impatient would-be patrons.

He'd sent her, it seemed, to a gay bar.

At least she wouldn't have to go inside. She'd be able to sense Ilmenite as she approached, and would spot him easily where he stood: leaning up against a wall and smoking with a dark-haired young man who looked high as a kite. As they spoke, that exciteable energy started to go out of him, the kid fading from cheerful impatience to leaning, lethargic, against the stone wall --

Curiosity and confusion replaced fear as she approached the club. Her footsteps slowed as she felt eyes on her from the guys queued to get in. Acanthite could feel the presence of the general nearby, but she got the distinct feeling that she was in the wrong place....

She craned her neck a little to try to steal a glance through the doorway as she passed it, but it was dim inside save for the occasional bright neon. The bouncer eyed her and called out something the dark senshi could not hear over the din of the music inside.

Acanthite hurried past and around the corner where she found Ilmenite. And another guy. She quickly realized that the poor civilian had been energy drained, which made her feel far less like she had walked in on something, but her cheeks flushed a bit anyway. A strange sweetish scent hit her nostrils as she walked up to the general, and the grey-eyed girl waved her hand to try to waft it away.

"Is that what pot smells like?" she asked him. Acanthite could name at least five girls from Saint Mags who she knew smoked it, but they never did it anywhere on the campus, as far as she knew. Too much oversight.

"Really cheap pot, yes." Not that he really minded. Ilmenite reached out absently to pluck the joint from the kid's fingers and offer it over to her. He just stared at them dazedly, blinking slowly, most of the way toward unconsciousness. Ilmenite didn't give him the final push. Just left him there, grinning as he stepped back.

"Have at, if you want it."

Acanthite took the joint, glancing at Ilmenite and raising an eyebrow as she did so. Totally not what she was expecting to be doing tonight, to say the least.

She was not a smoker of anything, if for no other reason than that the nuns at school made it a difficult habit to maintain. Mayumi was also one of those girls who wanted to be rebellious, but not really bad. If she came home one weekend smelling like smoke, she was fairly certain her mother would proceed to really freak out. Though there was no specific fear - the grey-eyed girl's mother had already sent her to Catholic school as punishment - it was still not a fight Mayumi wanted to have.

"Oh yeah, the smell won't get into my normal clothes while I'm dressed like this, will it?" The dark senshi's gaze strayed to the drained stoner, then to the joint she still held awkwardly between two fingers like it might bite her.

"I always smell like smoke, all the time, so I have no idea." He flashed her a grin, though, and something in that grin was daring -- live a little, take a little taste. It was a good thing the Negaverse wasn't like college. All things considered, Ilmenite would have made a terrible RA.

"You can let me know later. How long were you watching...?"

The senshi tried not to look like she was stealing a quick glance over her shoulder like she feared the cops would show up right then and there, then took a hit on the joint.

Or tried to. Unused to smoking, Acanthite coughed on the smoke, wincing at the taste.

Hurriedly, she returned the cigarette to the general, and when she could manage, replied, "I showed up to you and this guy looking obliterated, but I don't know how much was him being stoned and how much was him being energy drained." Another quick cough, and then Acanthite rubbed her cheek as her eyes watered enough to send a tear rolling down one of them.

Ilmenite looked down at her, amused, took one draw on the joint himself -- and then froze. Suddenly realizing that the girl was right, and he didn't have a damned clue if the smell would stick to him even out of uniform. He also was pretty sure that Zac wouldn't be a fan of drugs on the job. It was a miracle he tolerated the cigarettes --

Smoke still pouring thoughtlessly out of his mouth, Ilmenite dropped the joint and snuffed it out. Oops.

"It was both. Mixed." He didn't cough, but he did blink a couple times. Shaking his head. "We can find another one. Your choice: inside, or wait for someone to come out for a smoke?"

A beat.

"He might well have friends..."

Acanthite squirmed a little. "I'll kind of stick out inside, though, won't I? Let's stay out here." She leaned to one side, looking past Ilmenite up the alleyway. "I mean, it's crowded enough tonight, and I can smell that there are enough smokers around that someone should be by soon?"

Then the senshi glanced back to the young man slumped on the pavement. "Enough poor bastards like him. One should come out eventually."

It was her choice; at the moment, things were quiet. Quiet enough that Ilmenite took a look around the empty alley and quirked a smile, eyes resettling down onto Acanthite. It wasn't likely they were just going to bump into someone immediately.

"Or you could wander up to the crowd milling out front and give him some sob story to get him back here...or be creative. This is what it's about. Come up with a story. Get someone alone." He paused. "Preferably someone who's kind of a d**k."

"Okay," Acanthite replied a bit distractedly, gaze straying upwards as she considered how to accomplish this. Then a smile slowly spread across her features and she glanced quickly at the general before telling him, "Wait here," and darting out of the alleyway.

The dark senshi was gone several minutes before returning with a fit-looking boy closer to her own age than to Ilmenite's. He approached the white-haired general, clearly checking him out, before blurting his appraisal:

"Dude, I thought you said your friend was hot."

The Senshi of the Cataract chewed her lip and glanced between Ilmenite and the kid she had brought. She had gotten the d**k part correct, at the very least.

Perhaps someone else would have been offended by the comment -- would have taken it out on his hapless charge. Maybe someone else would have argued, all flashing eyes and dangerous scowl at the poor kid.

But that wasn't Ilmenite. Instead, after one startled blink, his mouth split into his usual smile, hopelessly amused. He still had a cigarette between his lips and, absently, he tapped the brim of his hat up to take the kid in better. How could he be offended? It was true. The only thing really hot about Ilmenite was the clothes, and the clothes hardly made the man, did they.

"This is already an improvement, you know. Better than the speed dating. You got him alone, right?" He looked past the kid, now, down the empty alley, and then his eyes locked onto Acanthite. "You know what to do next,.."

"Wait, what?" the guy started to protest, raising his hands and starting to back away.

Acanthite laughed lightly at Ilmenite's amusement, and nodded. "Yeah, I think so." She moved behind the kid, putting a hand against his back to keep him from escaping. And then she started to draw the energy out of him. Quickly, since no one was watching but an ally, and because she did not want the dude she had kidnapped to make too much noise.

She shivered a little at the thought of being the aggressor, but reassured herself that it was okay. This guy had been a jerk in the few minutes she had known him, and so he deserved what was coming. And Acanthite was not killing him, only taking his energy. If anything, she was helping him contribute to something higher than himself.

"He really didn't look like the 'save the planet' type," she remarked as he sank to the asphalt. "So it's like we're only helping, right?"

Ilmenite's reply was brief; a shrug, a long moment of silence. Yes, she'd successfully drained someone, and perhaps that had been the goal. Everyone would have their own methods of filling their quota. But. Somehow, he didn't think she could always force-hall people into quiet alleys and drain them before they realized.

so.

"Do it again. Another one. But this time, try to make it so he doesn't realize what you're doing." Like that, he disappeared for a moment -- only his voice alerting her to look up to where he perched on the roof of the building above her. "Subtlety. Convince him things are normal."

Acanthite's smile became uneasy. She did not want to disappoint the general, but, "What do I do if he finds out anyway though? I can't just cut loose with magic or something to escape." She paused and frowned. "Can I?"

She supposed it was certainly possible, but would feel better unleashing a torrent of water on a crowded block with her superior's advice. Or permission.
