continuation of "Debts to be Repaid".

The lake returned to its former state of peace. The only remaining signs of any sort of disturbance were the three Peisio dragon orbs, glistening bright blue in the shallows, and the faintest tinge of red to the water lapping gently against Kamala's feet.

Kamala looked over at Scar, his body a tapestry of lacerations. He was still in battle stance, tense and ready to take on any more attackers. A silent snarl curled back his lips, baring a row of sharp teeth. "Where is Junior?" Kamala asked. She did not bother asking if Scar was okay.

Scar made a sort of click and whistling noise. Nothing happened for a moment, then there was a rustling from the underbrush closest to the lake's shore. The Ysali dragon child slowly crept his way out into the open.

"They're gone now," Kamala said, the relief clear in her voice. Until the dragon child had shown himself, she hadn't been sure what to think. "You're safe now." Kamala looked up again at Scar, and thought she could see gratitude swirling in his brilliant green eyes.

The rippling of water against her legs felt more insistent than from before. Kamala looked down, frowning, and felt the feathers on the back of her neck begin to prickle. Her body understood the implications before her brain caught up; then with a snap, she looked toward the center of the lake in horror.

Three shadows loomed in the center of the lake. Two of them were evidently Peisio, but one of them looked a little strange.

"We've got company," Kamala said urgently to Scar. He nodded at her and hastened toward Junior, nudging him into movement. "We've got to go, now!" As she spoke, she attempted to follow through with her own advice, but found that she could only move the right foreleg, which was already in the air. Her feet felt suddenly cold, too cold. Kamala looked back at the figures in the lake, and noticed that lines of ice were spiraling out from the lake's center...

Kamala looked down, already knowing what she was about to see. Rings of ice held three of her four legs in place, and try as she might they would not budge. She heard an inquiring noise from the forest bordering the lake shore, and looked up to find Scar gazing back with concern. "Don't worry about me," Kamala said, coating her words with steel. She glanced back at the lake center. The shadows were closer. "Go, now. I'll take care of them." Scar still hadn't budged, and now Junior was back too, head turning from his father to Kamala and back again. "I said, GO!" Kamala roared, and the two turned tail and scuttled away.

Kamala's feet were rapidly going numb. It was difficult to decide which was more disconcerting -- the possibility of frostbitten toes or the possibility of being torn to shreds by the ominously approaching shadows. Grinding her teeth in an unpleasant sound reminiscent of ice against ice, Kamala pulled as hard as she could on her frozen restraints. Her other front leg slowly inched upward, squeezing her claws together into an even more uncomfortable position.

Kamala glanced over her shoulder. The figures had come even closer, close enough to make out colors: two blue shapes, and one as white as the icy path it was walking on. Kamala had only heard of the Aiskala dragons and had never seen one before. She'd thought that they only lived in the ocean, or as the name implied, on the continent of Aisko. Apparently, this lake was large enough for a visit from an Aiskala.

A flicker of anger flared deep inside of Kamala, and she welcomed the warmth of the feeling. She did not know why the Peisio dragons seemed to have a grudge against Scar and Junior, but she would not let the Aiskala get into this feud, too. Her front leg popped out of the lake with a crack, as if her boiling blood had somehow melted the ice.

But her hind legs were still stuck fast, and the dragons continued to approach. She needed to slow them down. Four vines shot from opposite shores of the lake, forming a net-like barrier between the Drakein and the dragons. As she pulled a second leg from the ice, wincing as sensation gradually returned in a sea of pins and needles, the dragons cut through the barrier like butter.

One last leg to free, but they were almost upon her. With one last ferocious yank, her leg ripped through the ice. Kamala wasted no time waiting for the feeling to return to her thawing limbs. The Peisio dragons reared up, roaring, carried forward by a huge wave, and with one elegant spin Kamala neatly slit both of their throats.

The Peisio dragons fell, gurgling, in a red splash, the wave carrying them immediately ebbing away into nothingness. Kamala lunged for the Aiskala dragon's throat, eager to get this over and done with. The Aiskala threw up a wall of ice, and Kamala's claws hit hard with an unpleasant scraping noise instead of sinking into flesh.

The wall retracted into the water. Frustrated, Kamala threw another swipe toward the Aiskala. She met resistance against yet another wall, thrown up in the split second between attack and hit. Again and again, Kamala darted toward the ice dragon; no matter which direction she came from, a wall of ice was there to block her. Kamala's guard slipped for a second, and the Aiskala landed a bruising blow.

This wasn't working. Two vines shot from each side, immobilizing each of the Aiskala's legs in a mirror version of the Aiskala's earlier ice trick. As spikes of ice shot skyward, severing the vines' thin but strong grip, Kamala took her chance and hit the Aiskala full on in the face. There was a simultaneous sensation of crushing and puncturing under her paw, and the ice fell away to reveal a beautiful white orb.
