Charlotte was beaming when she boarded her ship. Though she appeared to be returning empty-handed, she felt anything but. The slender metal wand strapped against her wrist was one of the most comforting things she'd had in a long time. Kayden had promptly questioned her about her endeavors when she returned to him. Grinning, Char gleefully undid the clasps of her little wrist band and pulled the wand out to show it to him. His change in expression was instantaneous. No matter how hard he tried to hide it, the disappointment to see such a frail looking "weapon" was clear on his face. He's been certain Char would choose a blade... He'd always thought she would... Daggers had seemed the perfect weapon for her. She could even wield them pretty successfully! Her Dovva companion's shift in attitude normally would've upset the blond girl, but instead she felt only smug. Smug and eager to show him what a wonderful choice she'd made.

No, she wouldn't look as cool as Kayden did with his bow, but she had no doubt her magic would do her work just fine! And she wouldn't have to worry about being in the midst of the fray! She never felt more certain about a choice in all her life. She tried to convince her best friend of this as they sailed toward their next destination, but he still seemed strangely skeptical.

By the time they made port in Eowyn, Char was nothing, if not ready to disprove his pessimism. Tossing her blond locks over her shoulder, she set off on her own, ready to find some trouble to get into!

Samael's stomach howled at him. After his last failed taming attempt, the brown Drakein had slunk back to his lair like a scolded puppy. And he'd refused to leave the safety and security of his clan for fear that a Vlidean would catch his scent and attack him. But by now, he was absolutely starving. And he couldn't just ask one of his clan mates to go out hunting for him... That was just wrong. Sam crept to the edge of his cave and wearily looked out. Nothing but the crags, sun, and sky (not that he'd expected to see much else). Still, it was foolish to be scared of prey! And that's just what Vlidean were! At least, they would be if Sam was feeling a little better...

But he couldn't just lie around and wait to starve. He had to get out there! Maybe he'd catch some food before the Vlidean caught him, and then be supercharged and ready for a fight! Yes, hopefully that's just what would happen. Waggling his tail, Sam leaped from his lair and into the sky, flying out of his rocky home and heading out to look for food.

Charlotte grumbled as she picked her way across the rocky shores where they'd made port. Far, far off into the distance, she could see mountains jutting up from the earth. Thinking back to all the Ayrala that hid in the rocks, she figured that was her best bet if she was looking for Dragons to slay. It seemed like such a long walk, though. And the sun was high and bright in the sky. She could only imagine what it would actually feel like to get there. Probably hot. And Eowyn was supposed to be very dry... And Char wasn't particularly used to dry weather, since she spent nearly all her life at sea. Still, she had to show Kayden what she could do. For all she knew, he was stalking her now. He was pretty good at that... Huffing in determination, Char set off, leaving the rocky coast behind her and venturing into the sandy wasteland that was the Terra Expanse.

As expected, it was hot and dry. It didn't take Char any time at all before she was ready to turn tail and head back to her ship. But she pressed on, eager and desperate to prove herself. She doubted that any amount of light magic would protect her from the sun, and her bare cheeks and arms were already turning an unhappy shade of pink. Charlotte groaned in annoyance and decided to find a shady outcrop to rest under. She was used to sand, but this constant walking in it wasn't doing her any favors! Except for maybe giving her calves that felt like rocks. Unfortunately, that wasn't anything she was concerned about at her young age.

She shuffled over to a small collection of rocks and dusted most of the sand from the one that was closest to the ground. Climbing on top of it, she tucked herself as close as she could to the highest one, pulling much of her body into the shade. Of course, even the rocks were uncomfortably warm, and Char realized she wouldn't be finding any relief here. Oh well, maybe if she just rested during the heat of the day...

Sam's hunt took him out of the mountains. Usually, he was more inclined to hunt around the disheveled rocks and crags, where delicious morsels of prey liked to hide. But today, he was too weary of being caught off-guard by anything else that could hide within those crevices. Especially if it was anything else that could put up a fight. And, quite frankly, Sam was just not up for a huge fight. At least in the vastness of the Terra Expanse, he could see anything that tried to come after him. For now, he was willing to give up an easy kill for his own safety. It was just something that needed to be done.

Unfortunately, most prey animals could see or hear him coming from a mile away. His brown and green scales were a pretty stark contrast to the soft golden sand. But Sam was content enough to lay low and execute some patience. As the day dragged on, Sam was actually able to catch a few small morsels to satiate himself. Of course, he was rather pleased when a hunting Feuereches swooped down almost right in front of him to snatch up a Bouken. Sam was quick to pounce on it and claim both little creatures for his snack.

He felt better as he strolled back the way he came, though still on the lookout for any dark shadows overhead. But instead of shadows, he saw something... shining? Sam tilted his head to the side. Of course, it wasn't uncommon to see the sun reflecting off the sand, but this was more like a golden shimmer against a patch of rocks... Sam crept closer until he recognized a human-like form. He was instantly weary. But still helplessly curious. He slunk a bit closer until he was standing next to the rocks, looking down at a little girl. A little unmoving sunburned girl. The Drakein glanced around, wondering if she was here by herself, or...? Was she even alive? He tentatively stuck her muzzle down next to her.

At some point, the heat of the boulders beneath her had gone from being uncomfortable to lulling. Without realizing it, Char had slipped into a quiet doze, oblivious to everything around her. At least until a harsh breath caught her in the back of the neck. the blond girl's eyes instantly popped open, and her body went rigid. She waited to see if maybe it had just been some sort of realistic dream... But then she heard the snuffling. She couldn't tell if she should be perfectly still, or if she was more likely to survive if she bolted upright and flailed wildly. There was no telling what was behind her... But it didn't seem to be going away. Maybe now would be a good time to kick her magic into gear! She just had to see what she was fighting... okay. She was just going to go for it. She was pretty likely to startle whatever creature was behind her. One, two... Char snapped upright, whirling on her attacker in a blue of golden locks and flashing violet eyes. She raised her wand arm with a flourish, casting a shield of light between her and the creature.

At first, she was sure it was a Dragon. Despite what she'd been thinking about being able to handle herself now, dread instantly entered her heart. But as she looked closer, she noticed that this beast was actually smaller than any Dragon she'd ever seen. And it didn't look like it was trying to attack her... Though the shimmering shield between them may have distorted her sight. She stepped closer to her protection to get a better look. "Who are you?" Charlotte demanded boldly. Just then, a shadow cast across the two of them...

Sam let out a hiss of surprise and back-peddled a few feet, gaze turning fierce as the little girl bolted up and cast some kind of light spell between them. The Drakein grunted in annoyance. He should've just left her alone, like pretty much everything else he stuck his nose into. He leaned back so that he was sitting in what he hoped was a non-violent pose, though a smidgen of distrust crept into his green eyes. "I'm Sam." He answered. What a rude girl! She didn't even try and give her name first! He'd only been checking to make sure she was ali-! His gaze turned upward as a dark shadow fell across them. And then another. And another. A gasp escaped his snout. Dragons! Quite a few of them... Flying together in search of prey. And they'd found... A scrawny Orderite girl and a Gaili Drakein. Sam spared another gaze at the girl. For all her bravado, she wouldn't stand a chance by herself... Not that the brown Drakein would fare much better... Two of the dragons made a dive for them, while the other three fluttered in a circle, eagerly awaiting what would happen next.

"Look, girl!" Sam growled, not up for dying today just because he'd stopped to check up on an Orderite. "You probably don't trust me." Sam could definitely see that. "But we're going to have to work together! You don't wanna be eaten, right?" He chortled, only half kidding. The two Dragons landed, one behind the girl, and one to Sam's side. Samael was not up for wasting time today. There were too many dragons for that. With a roar, he plucked the rock the blond girl was standing on right out from under her with his magic and hurled it toward the Dragon closest to him. The boulder hit it in the head, and it instantly went down.

Charlotte gasped as she looked up to see the small pack of dragons flying overhead, just waiting for her to drop her guard... And this, this Drakein must be on their side! Char had never heard of such a thing, but surely it wasn't impossible... The only flaw in her plan was how doubtful she was that she could feed five dragons and a drakein. She wasn't particularly round or curvy... That probably didn't matter. They could just fight over her corpse once she was dead... Charlotte shivered. Not feeling very tough and independent now. Her magical shield wavered as she doubted her power and eventually flickered out, leaving nothing between her and the brown drakein.

Her gaze was tipped downward as the dragons dove, but she snapped up to look up at the creature in front of her as he spoke. She huffed at his comment about trust. Of course she didn't trust him! Him and his ilk were terrible beasts! But... she found that she didn't want to be eaten. She drew her arms close to herself as the two dragons landed around them and watched in awe as Sam mercilessly took one of them out. He... he was willing to kill them...? She turned to stare at the dragon behind her. If this Drakein would fight with her, then surely she could take him on alone, if she had to! One against one was much better odds than one against six.

Char nodded in determination and raised her wand arm. This was what she'd come for, anyway! To fight lots of dragons and prove herself to Kayden. Now was her chance! Her gaze hardened in determination and she cast a spell to create three stakes made of light. Yowling, she waved her arm and flung them toward the Kiandri beast that was nearest to her. One of thr stakes embedded in its eye, and the other two in its chest. It went down as easily as Sam's had. "It's not 'girl!" The blond Orderite snapped, turning large, pouty eyes on the drakein. "It's Char."

Sam could only gape at the little girl- er, Char, as her attack landed and felled another of the dragons. He hated to admit that he thought she'd be pretty useless: all scrawny with no visible weapon. And her first attack against him had been a shield! It really hadn't looked good... But now, two of the beasts were down, and Sam couldn't help but let out a pleased yip. This would be even easier than he thought! Though he doubted Char was actually anymore vicious than he was, at least they could band together and attack a Dragon pack! "Alright, then, Char! Let's take 'em out!" Sam yipped in excitement, unable to control a cheerful bounce.

Overhead, the three Dragons were stunned that two of their members were already down. But they still outnumbered their targets, if only barely. If they attacked at once, maybe they could down one of them, then they other would be easy prey... The Orderite girl was small, but not to be underestimated... Then again, the Drakein had seemed pretty aggressive with his attack. They dived in lower, releasing jolting bits of electricity onto the two killers before them.

Sam felt the charge skate around his scales. It prickled near the sensitive endings in his wings and across his spine, but the attack wasn't strong enough to dissuade him from leaping into the air and sinking his teeth into a dragon the flew to close. He dragged it back to the ground, giving it a bone-jerking shake as it howled and beat its wings desperately to escape. Unfortunately for the Dragon, Sam refused to let go until it was limp, and he could taste the coppery tang of its blood in every corner of his mouth. He couldn't help but smirk as he spat it out.

Charlotte couldn't help but send the strange Drakein a curious look. he was kind of a weird fellow, all bouncy and what-have you. Certainly not like what the young Orderite expected out of a predator. She didn't have time to dwell on it as the other three shot toward them, sending shocking bolts of electrical magic their way. Char gasped and raised her shield of light again, hoping the charges wouldn't be too much for her still experimental magic. Rather than bounce off or sizzle into nothing, the bolts danced against her magic, using it as a conductor to find her. The blond girl shrieked as the electricity hit her, crumpling into a little mass on the ground. Her fall was enough to avoid what could have been a fatal talon attack from one of the overhead beasts. She expected another assault, but something had still the two remaining attackers.

Char glanced off to see that Sam had ripped into the third, dragging it down and tearing it to shreds. It was awfully disgusting looking, but at least there were only two more.

One, if Char could help it.

they were distracted by another death, now, so maybe this was her chance! Getting her determined face back on, Char waved her arms again, creating a series of light panels that led right up to one of the dragons. She hoped onto the first, and as she moved to the second, the first disappeared. Charlotte hardly noticed. She ascended the makeshift flight of stairs until she could pounce right onto the dragons back. With the trusty knife Kayden had given her she stabbed into it for all she was worth, making repeated cuts until the shrieking beast started to fall. They were quite a ways up, a distance Char was pretty sure would be hazardous to her health if she hit the ground from here. Making an executive decision, she leaped from her target's back, waving her arms to cast a spell to save her. But.

Nothing happened.

She exhausted too much of her magic already, and now, she was falling. Falling straight for the ground.

Sam shook his head to remove some of the blood from around his muzzle. He really should start taking advantage of his claws more than his teeth... It was a bit cleaner that way... But it was just so difficult to hold his position when he wasn't standing firm with his claws planted! His fangs were just more convenient that way, even if the flashy taste of Dragon would probably linger against his tongue for the rest of the day.

But he didn't have time to worry about it now. They were still in the midst of combat, with two attackers remaining. The odds were in Sam's and Char's favors now, though. They'd already proven they could take out these Kiandri's with a few well-aimed hits. Sam was grinning like a mad Drakein. Especially when Char's flight of light stairs brought her face-to-face (well, back) with one of the two remaining Dragons. The girl certainly could be vicious. Sam was pretty sure if he'd been more docile with his kills, she also would have, but he wasn't willing to take the time to be sweet and gentle with these hungry killers about! He watched her drive that tiny knife into its neck. One blow must've lodged in it's spine, and when she jerked away the dragon started to fall. Charlotte hopped from her perch, and Sam expected another barrier of light to catch her.

But she sure was taking her time to cast it... He barely caught the surprise on her face for what it was; the fact that nothing was catching her. She was surprised about it too. Well, she'd been too much help to just let her go here! Sam hurled himself into the air, wings beating quickly to catch her before she reached the ground. he dipped beneath her, tucking his wings so she'd land neatly (if not a bit roughly) on his back. She must be worn out, if her magic had failed her...

So the last was up to Sam. And it was angry. The dragon charged him, smashing into his side and sending Sam and Char through the air, but Sam's wings angled to save him before he fell too far. Still, the jarring crash had left him dazed. he definitely couldn't take another blow like that! So Samael launched an attack of his own, crashing into the Dragon's gut and tearing a gash with his talons. he slipped to the side as the beast clawed at him, using his smaller frame to avoid the attack and instead battered a hole in his wing with his back claws. He glided around to his back and pounced hard, driving both of them to the ground, where the beast disintegrated under Sam's weight.

The brown Drakein sighed tiredly and collected the orbs, giving Char's share over to her. "Why don't you let me fly you home?" He offered pleasantly.
