No matter how Kamala tried, it just wouldn't work. Kamala snarled and slammed a fist into the nearest tree, sending the boukens living in its branches scattering for cover, chittering angrily. They stopped the noise when they saw Kamala in all her fearsome Drakein glory, opting instead to run away. Kamala lunged for one, but missed by an inch, and it was instead snatched by a lurking vine. It carried the struggling bouken over to a Ysali dragon watching Kamala from atop a log and, with a deft flick, broke the bouken's neck. The vine dropped the bouken in front of the dragon and disappeared back into the earth whence it came.
"See Scar, why can't I just do it like that?" As always, Scar huffed at the nickname but made no other signs of protest. Kamala took the judgment in his gaze to be directed more at her impatience. Kamala sighed. She'd watched Scar move many vines in the past day, but no matter how hard she tried, she'd so far only been able to make a vine twitch, and even that might have just been the wind. Learning was somewhat hampered by the fact that her teacher wasn't even teaching her -- Kamala had mostly been following Scar around all day and watching what he did.
"This isn't working," Kamala said. Evidently, Scar took offense at her frustration, because one second he was there and the next he had disappeared. Kamala had not been on her guard so she was unable to even make a stab at following him; she didn't even know which direction he'd gone. Kamala groaned. "And now I've lost my teacher..."
There was a roar in the distance, and Kamala crouched to the forest floor, all senses instantly alert. A moment later, Scar came running toward her. "Where've you been?" Kamala began to ask, but her words trailed away. A Peisio dragon was following Scar, and from the sounds of it there were more coming.

Dread collected in Kamala's heart like cold lead. She realized her mouth was open, and she closed it with a snap that almost bit off her tongue. "Scar..?" she said, the uncertainty evident in her voice as she started to back away. Then the crippling fear came over her once more, and she turned to run. But Scar had somehow maneuvered himself into her way, and was insistently herding her in the direction of the charging dragons. "Scar!" Kamala said again, more urgently. "I -- I can't -- what are you doing?" Was this his revenge? Was he trying to kill her?
The Peisio dragons were almost upon her, and she had to act one way or another. Running was no longer an option, so Kamala gritted her teeth and widened her stance. She would have to fight, with magic or no.
Suddenly, Kamala felt better, and the fear receded even if it did not go away entirely. She'd been in worse scenarios before! What were three paltry dragons against the hordes of four or six that she had gone up against before? Not only gone up against, but slaughtered. And that giant Kiandri dragon had been no picnic either. These Peisio dragons were no longer preying on her from their oceanic home. They were in the forest, in her world now.
Kamala charged head on. For a second, she thought she saw the lead Peisio dragon falter slightly, but then he resumed his bullish pace. Kamala let out a wordless battle cry, and just she and the dragons met, she threw herself to the side. The dragons ran forward a few more feet then stopped, turning from side to side in their confusion. Without warning, Kamala attacked from the other side, hitting the unfortunate dragon in the neck. She scooped up the resulting Peisio dragon orb with satisfaction, but she could not gloat for long. In her moment of distraction, the lead Peisio dragon charged again, catching her full on in the chest and pinning her down. The other dragon leaned fully on her wing, and there was a snap as bone cracked. Kamala screamed in pain, struggling feebly against the dragon-weight on her chest.

Kamala could feel herself getting dizzy, the once brilliant pain in her wing dimming ever so slightly, and she recognized the sensation of shock. Frantically, she scrabbled for mental clarity, trying to find the energy for more than her feeble attempts to push the dragon off. All she could think was how much she wanted the weight to lift off of her chest... it was a need that burned desperate and bright like a coal fueling her flickering mind.
And then, the weight was gone. Kamala shook her head, blinking, trying to understand where the vine around the dragon's neck had come from. She looked over at Scar, perched safely in a branch above; it wasn't him. No time to think. Kamala clawed the dragon on her wing with her recently freed arm, hooking through the dragon's eyes and pulling up. There was a scream of pain and another Peisio dragon orb thumped to the ground. Kamala sprang to her feet, adrenaline pushing thoughts of her ruined wing to the back of her mind, and willed the vine around the last dragon's neck to tighten. It did so immediately, and the dragon tried in vain to pull it off before going limp and falling with a thud. He exploded in a vision of dust, bones, and a third gleaming blue orb.
Kamala weakly lowered herself to the ground, stunned by what she had done. Her heartbeat slowed, and the pain returned full force to her wing. She groaned, biting down to keep from screaming. Then she felt a light touch, and the pain vanished.
Kamala looked up to see Scar, nosing her wing, a beautiful green light connecting the two. Awed, Kamala stretched her wing full-length to confirm what she already suspected: it was good as new.
"Thank you," Kamala said, and Scar harrumphed before ducking under a bush and out of sight.
