The park certainly looked a lot different in the daytime than it did on her usual patrols, and it was surprising that anyone would find Nyasa Freeman out and about at this time of the day. Once upon a time, she enjoyed being outside, getting a bit of Vitamin D and seeing what normal people did during the day. She had a few shifts during the day, which left her nights free to party, to roam around, to do her ‘job’. No, Nyasa was never much of a day person.

And that was fine. No one said she had to be. But today, she was planning a special date, and she was merely waiting for him to take his lunch break. She was waiting for quite a long time to drop this little bit of news to her roommate, soon to be former roommate, and this time, she was determined to get the chance to tell him. This time, there was no meeting, no pressing matters to attend to.

She simply had to wait. She promised she’d meet him in the park, and there she would wait, sitting on the bench and simply watching the activities in the park. School was just about to rear its ugly head and thus the children were out in droves, enjoying one last week of freedom before they were chained to their desks with their noses in books. She hardly pitied them. She survived school no worse for wear, and so would they. But still, it was nice to see them running around, chasing down the ice cream truck as it pulled into a spot.

‘Maybe I’ll break it to him and he’ll treat me to some ice cream. That would be nice.’

ARE YA READY, KIDS?

“Wait, Mr. Ice Cream Man! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT! I have money, I just want some ice creeeeeam, you poopbrain!”

Alejandro was not amused as he chased down the ice cream truck. In a few weeks, there would be no more ice cream trucks until the next summer. THE NEXT SUMMER! That was just completely unacceptable. He had been close to catching it the first time it passed by, but the stupid driver hadn’t seen him! So he had chased, and run, and he was sweaty and gross now.

But delicious ice cream goodness was almost in his grasp. He placed his money on the counter and gasped, “I.. want...”

“Lemme guess... you want a Hello Kitty pop, right little girl?”

Alejandro’s pink eyes had never been wider, and he snatched the money off of the small table connected to the truck. Little girl. LITTLE GIRL?! Oh, now this guy had just graduated up from the rank of poopbrain. “DO I LOOK LIKE A LITTLE GIRL TO YOU, FART FACE? What, because my hair is pink, I must want the little pinkie ice cream? I must fluff around with ponies and high-heels and makeup like your wrinklybutted Mama?”

Okay, the makeup crack wasn’t quite fair since he did wear makeup for modeling and didn’t mind, but THIS guy didn’t know that! Judging by the ashen color of the ice cream man, he wanted nothing more than for Alejandro to storm off, but that wasn’t the kid’s style. Instead, he leapt up and snatched the warped cat with a distinctive, if mushy, pink bow and brought it to his mouth as he falsettoed, “Dios mio, I just love Senorita Kitty, oh yes, I will eat her up!”

He took a monster size bite out of the frozen feline and then flung the rest to the ground. “No, I don’t think so. I want a ChocoTaco, and I’m not paying for that pink mess!”

And yet, of all of the children that flooded the park, why was it that a single one could catch her attention above all else? Was it his pink hair? His caramel-colored skin? No, it was that little mouth of his, and the words that poured out of them. She remained where she was seated, glancing in that direction and her display of complete uninterest was a farce. The moment he screamed the first insult, her attention was completely and utterly on him, whether he wanted it or not.

’You kiss your mother with that mouth?’ Nyasa mused to herself, knowing better than to say anything and merely carrying on in her voyeuristic ways, trying to decide if it was worth it to venture out while the crowd of children, and him, were still there. Maybe it’d be best to wait. Less likely chance of getting involved, or one of them stepping on her toes or dropping their ice cream and blaming it on her. She gave a groan. ’His hatred of the little things is spreading to me now... lovely.’

Even so, the pink-haired child at the front was giving her a great show, at least. He had spunk, and she couldn’t help but find some kind of amusement in his little act. She especially like the part when he leapt up and snatched the disgustingly pink cat from the poor man’s hands. He was making a scene and had he been her child, he wouldn’t have gotten away with this kind of behavior. No, she approved of him taking a bite and smashing the ice cream to the ground in retaliation, but it was the absence of tact and just how over the top his emotions were. Oddly enough, this act reminded her of Richard, and she couldn’t help but feel the need to intervene. She had a few dollars in cash in her pocket, and in truth, part of her bleeding heart beat for the man that had just lost a few dollars. In this economy, no one really could afford to lose money...

“I’ll pay for the pink monstrosity on the ground,” Nyasa said, pulling a five from her wallet and shifting her way past the other children without giving them a second look, though careful not to step on them, or the discarded ice cream. “And bottled water, please. If you have any.”

She cast a glance at drama king, making sure he and only he had seen her small smile.

Now that the problem of his gender had been resolved, Alejandro was feeling a little bad about throwing the ice cream on the ground. Not because the ice cream man didn’t deserve the drama (he totally did), but the boy truly was kind at heart. The utter fear on the worker’s face as he had retrieved the ChocoTaco and quiet way he took the boy’s money and prepared change made him think maybe he had gone too far. Well, all he could do now was beam a bright smile as he said, “Thank you very much--”

Then the lady appeared waving around a five dollar bill like he might mention pocket change. She was tall and classy and the little smile she sent to him made him puff up his chest with pride. Clearly someone felt he was in the right to feel wronged, and that helped alleviate his guilt somewhat. His competitive nature, however, would not allow her to fully take the spotlight.

With a bow so quick that it made him a little dizzy, he cleared his throat and gallantly offered, “No, no, I have change for your wa--gack!”

His throat constricted in the middle of his sentence. His eyes bulged, and his small hands went immediately to his throat. Why... why was it suddenly so hot? Why... why couldn’t be breathe?

She had it all figured out. She was going to pay for the damaged good, treat herself to some water, and then take the aspiring actor aside and teach him a thing or two about his little act. He felt wrong and she definitely understood the desire to get revenge, but there was always a proper way to go about it. It was going to be one of those life lesson ordeals, where he’d come out of this experience getting a little wiser, and her finding a way to pay him to take his improved act to Sugar Shanty, just as a parting present to Richard. If anyone could appreciate a child’s rise to stardom, it’d be him.

That was the plan. But it would figure that fate had another plan entirely in store. She had a feeling that something was right, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. The little actor was saying something, but the sound that came out of his mouth was frightening. The sound of silence. When a child was quiet, that meant one of two things: they were up to something, or they were in trouble.

It had been, what, a year, two years since she had put away her medical kit for the final time, and yet how easily it all seemed to come reeling back, and all because of the distress she saw in the young boy’s face. The way his hands went to his throat and his eyes bulged was a clear sign that something did not agree with him, and she just barely refrained from cursing out loud before dropping to her knees and getting at his level, speaking softly to him even when another child nearby started crying. “Calm down, kid. I know you’re probably scared, but you need to stay calm. Can you do that for me?”

“Is he choking?” The employee peered over the edge but didn’t move, and he failed to hide the face from his voice, which caused Nyasa to glare back at him, allowing him to see the seriousness of her gaze. “Should-should I call 911?”

Sarcasm would have been one way to have fun, but there was no time for that. She answered immediately, before turning back to the kid. “Yes, tell them to hurry. Now, nod your head for yes and shake it for now. Is it hard to breathe? Do you feel hot?”

Alejandro was hearing everything going on around him, but he could not respond. His throat was constricted to the point that it was hard to breath, much less speak. When the tall lady bent down to talk to him, his watery eyes were focused solely on her. He nodded when she asked him to stay calm, and he definitely tried to keep his promise.

911?! Oh, oh that was bad... very bad. He had never called 911 but he knew it was for emergencies only. Apparently he was having an emergency. Thankfully his Mama wasn’t there, or she would be freaking out. His abuela would be worse. His brothers would just make fun of him, so he was definitely glad they weren’t here!

His tongue swelled up in his mouth. Alejandro could not hope to talk at all at this point. Thankfully, the lady had a good idea! One nod. Yes, it was hard to breathe! Then a second, frantic nod. Yes, he was hot! Wasn’t the sweat rolling down his face indicative of that?

“You seem to be having an allergic reaction,” Nyasa said, racking her memory for the details and remembering all of this a little too well. It wasn’t just her medical training that prepared her for this. Nowadays, more and more children were having severe allergic reactions, and the problem wasn’t just finding the smoking gun, but getting this reaction cleared up. And fast. This was no mild reaction. This was the real deal.

A little bit of edge was heard in her voice, looking to the children that circled around them and barking orders, caring little for their feelings or calming their fears. They’d be fine. It was this one that she was worried about. “If one of you has an epipen or if your parents have an epipen, go get it please. Otherwise, clear the way.”

They obeyed without question and already people were beginning to gather, and she took comfort in that she could hear the ice cream man on the cell phone behind her. She didn’t hear the full conversation but he had heard her diagnosis, and if that didn’t get the paramedics to hurry, she wasn’t sure what would. Had there been no one there and she could transform, she’d simply teleport him away, but unfortunately for him, she was only Nyasa Freeman right now. But... Nyasa was better than no one.

“Alright, we’re going to lay you down until the ambulance gets here. I’m trying to help you feel better, but you’re going to have to trust me and stay calm. You’re doing a great job, and I know you’re a great actor. So, act calm for me, and lay down.”

’Lay him down, get his feet elevated. Make sure the airway is clear... what else, what else...’ She kept her troubled thoughts to herself, not wanting to scream at the crowd in front of the boy. One of them had to have an epipen, surely! One of them!

The employee ran out of his truck and stood at her side, barely able to keep it together but at least offering some kind of help. “They’re on their way, they’ll be here in five minutes... what else can I do?”

“Not panic, for starters. And move your truck, you’re blocking their point of entry.” She spat, only now allowing some of her distress show, but toning it down when she addressed her patient. “Ever rode on an ambulance before? It’s fun, I promise.”

It was weird what the mind concentrated on in when one was in distress. The one thing on Alejandro's mind was that he would never forgive Hello Kitty for as long as he lived. Once he got out of the hospital, he would take it upon himself to purge his house of anything associated with the feline. He felt pretty sure one of his cousins had a Hello Kitty kite... but she loved that kite. Maybe he could use his prize money to buy an identical kite and then destroy it. Then she could keep her kite. Yes, this seemed like a good plan.

The little boy tried very hard to listen to what the lady had to say. Normally, he had trouble listening to authority figures. He didn't like people to boss him around when they didn't even know him. They weren't his Mama; they weren't his abuela. But now? Now he was scared, and it was easy to obey when his life was on the line. He lay as still as he could, but his chest still heaved and he struggled to breath. His hand dug into his leg and hit something hard. His cell phone!

The ambulance ride might be fun on a normal day, but all Alejandro wanted right now was to be home. To get home, he would need to call his Mama--or have this lady call her. It was difficult, but the boy slid the cellphone out of his jean pocket. It landed with a small, but audible, clack. His fingers reached around for it, but he could not find it. Wide, tear-brimmed pink eyes looked over to the lady who was taking care of him. He hated to cry like a little baby; he was not a baby. But... but he really did want his Mama right now.

The ice cream truck was moved in no time at all, and Nyasa had spotted the phone that fell out of the young boy's pocket, subconsciously reaching for it and looking to her impromptu patient. He looked so scared, and she chided him lightly for it, in hopes of appealing to that silly notion that 'big boys didn't cry'. Something she knew to be a lie, but whatever would keep him from crying and making matters worse. "Now, now, I saw you acting before. You're a natural, a real pro! Don't tell me you can't keep acting brave for me..."

As she held the boy's legs up with one hand, she reached for the cell phone that fell out and somehow knew what he wanted her to do with it. As brave as anyone could be, the first person they'd want in an emergency is their mother, and she managed to get it flipped open, taking a moment to try and figure out the device as she could hear the blaring sirens from down the street. Help was on the way, but it was still best to get a hold of this kid's mother.

"Hear that? The ambulance is on it's way, and they're going to do absolutely everything they can for you," Nyasa said in a soft and comforting manner, scrolling through his contacts and finding the number listed as 'Mama'. If that wasn't her, then someone was in for a surprise and it wouldn't just be her. "Stay calm and brave for me, okay? I'm going to call your mom now. Is that okay?"

Not that she needed to ask permission. The man in the ice cream truck waved down the hefty white and red vehicle, the siren's threatening to block out any noise on the other end but Nyasa refused to give up her grip on Alejandro, merely pressing the phone against her shoulder and hoping that the woman on the other end would answer, and spoke English.

Going to let you puppet Nyasa as they heft him into the ambulance, if that's okay? As well as play his Mama.

Sure, no worries! Gonna call this my ending post, too, since it seems like the actual hospitalization I should do as a solo?

Alejandro was doing his best to act brave. It was hard, but crying was even harder. The desire made his throat clench tighter, made his nose run slightly, but he still did his very, absolute best. He was not a baby, and he was going to prove it one way or the other. Even if he couldn't keep the hot, fat tears from rolling down his face. At least her moving of his legs did not hurt him further, perhaps in large part due to his own flexibility.

The sirens were the only thing to enter the boy's hearing now. He kept his gaze straight ahead. He was beginning to feel a little light-headed but tried his best to not complain or move, even when some strangers came and lited him up. The stretcher was cold, colder than the ground had been, and his savior's touch was really what the boy focused on. It was warm... strong, concerned, and warm. It kept

After a few moments of ringing, a feminine voice immediatly answered, "Hola, gordito. I'm cooking your favorite for--you say Alejandro is hurt? Allergic... he's allergic to strawberries, yes. On the way to the hospital? Dios Mio, yes, I will meet it there. Thank you, bless you for helping Alejandro..."

In a screech of tires and with a scream of a siren, the ambulance was off, leaving only a crowd of confused onlookers and a melting Hello Kitty icecream that had been the source of all the trouble.

The sound of sirens was relieving and nostalgic to the former EMT, but there was no time for her to get all the warm, fuzzy feelings that came with it. Her main focus was the little boy's health, and keeping her promise to him and his mother. Well, to the best of her ability.

After all, even with the proper training, there was only so much she could do for him. When the paramedics piled out of the ambulance, she did her best to relay as much information to them as possible, keeping a calm and collective tone despite the panic going on around her and the blaring sirens. Alejandro needed a straight point, a pillar, and she could provide that, even when she couldn't provide anything else.

Even when they lifted him onto the gurney and carted him into the ambulance, Nyasa kept her cool, and she flashed him a soft smile as she followed after him. Whatever her original intention in the park was, it would have to wait for another day...

"Do you know what triggered his allergy attack?" asked one of the paramedics.

Nyasa answered without thinking, before catching herself and giving a soft laugh, a bit of her humanity showing through, much to her own dismay. "Hello Kitty. I mean... strawberry flavored ice cream. He's allergic to strawberries."

The bright side of this was that the Hello Kitty ice cream bar would never hurt anyone again...
